Reduce installed cost and increase productivity with the Simpson Strong-Tie® DBC and SUBH bridging connectors. A single screw holds the connector to the channel, reducing the installed cost over conventional connections that require four screws. The SUBH wall-stud connector fi ts snug over 1 ½ " U-channel and is the only code-listed bridging connector. The DBC is the fi rst and only connector load rated for drywall studs and smaller ¾" U-channel.
The SUBH and DBC have been extensively lab tested as a system, ensuring that tabulated design values refl ect stud web depth and thickness. To learn more, call (800) 999-5099 or visit www.strongtie.com/cfs. To speak with a Simpson Strong-Tie representative in Hawaii, dial (808) 479-1216.

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
HSA OFFICERS & BOARD OF DIRECTORS
On behalf of the Hawaii Steel Alliance (HSA), I welcome
you to the 14th edition of our Resource Directory. This annual directory contains important information on the latest develop-ments in steel framing and metal roofing, as well as HSA’s most valuable asset, our members.
Many thanks to our advertising members and industry supporters, who are featured throughout
this directory, and make this publication possible. Please support these companies, as without their help we would not be able to make this information available to all of you.
As the HSA looks forward to positive growth in our construction industry over the next several years, we wish to remind you of steel’s superior strength, consistency and sustainability. And how many products can offer the additional benefits of termite protection, fire resistance and energy efficiency? It is no wonder that residential steel construction in Hawaii has grown significantly over the past 20 years, earning our state the reputation of being one
of the nation’s industry leaders in structural cold-formed steel framing.
With a focus on diversity, the HSA has embraced the design and use of both cold-formed and structural steel in mid-rise residential and all forms of commercial con-struction. Our metal roofing committee promotes steel’s durability and long-lasting solutions for “cool roofs” and mildew issues. As our organization matures, HSA looks toward supporting the multiple trades, design disciplines, products and innovative systems that contribute to making our mission a success.
Included in this directory is a list of our current members, officers and directors who can all offer you expertise in their respective fields, including steel framing and metal roofing. We hope you will keep this resource directory within easy reach as a valuable reference for sourcing your next project.
Mahalo for your support and interest in steel framing.

Steel is still the framing material of choice. All other materials
are measured against the standard of structural steel. There are many benefits for both the owner and the designer. A few of them are listed here:
Speed of ConstructionShop fabrication enhances pro-
ductivity on the job because tight construction tolerances can be main-tained. Steel lends itself to building information modeling (BIM) to allow the close cooperation between contrac-tors and designers in all phases of construction. The component wall and floor panels allow for rapid erection of the framing, allowing other trades to start their work sooner.
SustainabilitySteel is the most recycled material
on the planet. Today’s steel is made of
recycled product exceeding 80 percent recycled content, and is the only material that is infinitely recyclable without further processing. The carbon footprint of steel has been reduced by 47 percent since 1990. Energy used in the production of steel has been reduced by 30 percent in the past three decades, according to the American Institute of Steel Construction’s website www.AISC.org. As a recognized green building material, steel framing earns credits and points for LEED and other government green incentives. The production of steel conserves water and no water is used in fabrication or is discharged. Project demolitions pay for scrap steel because of its value. By contrast, other materials cost between $3 and $10 per square foot to scrap and landfill.
Cost-EffectivenessThe use of cold-formed steel (CFS)
framing in typical mid-rise construction projects can mean lower construction costs. Today, we see CFS being used in buildings up to nine stories tall. There are several mid-rise proj-ects that have been framed in steel in Hawaii. The Colony at the Peninsula, Plaza at Pearl City and KaMalanai in Kailua are just a few. When competing framing systems are evaluated for proj-ects using comparable materials, steel remains the cost leader for the majority of construction projects. A faster con-struction schedule is the reason.

projects like hotels an opening date is firm. Panelized steel system schedules are dependable and do not experience weather delays as with concrete, block and precast planks. When using steel floor systems, there is no concrete shoring to get in the way, and the mechanical and electrical trades gain faster access.
Aesthetic Appeal and Design Flexibility
Architects love steel. Steel framing can be bent and rolled to create curves and other architecturally pleasing effects. Steel allows a greater degree of expression and creativity in the design, while retaining structural demands. Designers are excited about exposing steel sections to emphasize grace, strength and transparency with free open spans and natural lighting.
High Strength, PredictableSteel has a yield stress up to 50,000
pounds per square inch in both com-pression and tension. Compare that to concrete with a yield stress between 3 to 5 ksi and, maybe for high strength concrete, a compressive yield stress of 12 to 15 ksi. Not only is steel stronger, it also has a much higher strength-to-weight ratio than other materials.
What is the benefit? The building will be lighter, and lighter buildings require less extensive foundations. Structural engineers love steel for its consistency, durability, and collabora-tive building modeling.
If your next steel framing project requires both top quality and speed, we can help:
• High quality G90 and G60 steel; domestic U.S. steel available
• 25 gauge to 12 gauge
• Expert, locally-machined studs and track from 1-5/8” up to 12”
• Delivery for most projects within one week
We’ve been in the building material industry for over 90 years. Call us and put our experience to work for you.

The use of 3-D BIM modeling allows the most complex framing structures to be built in harmony with all other trades for a cost-efficient structure. Steel is manufactured and fabricated under controlled conditions and the final strength is verified at the point of production.
ASTM standards closely define the properties of structural steel—you don’t have to wait 28 days after the material has already been placed in the structure to find out how strong it is.
Innovative and ModifiableThe steel industry (manufacturers
and contractors alike) continues to come up with new innovations for the material and its use. New headers and floor joists are still being developed today. New lateral load resisting systems are coming on the market, and new truss systems are being developed. It is also not unusual for steel framed buildings to be modified to satisfy changing requirements. Walls and floor systems can be moved many times with little disruption while the building is still occupied.
DurabilityCold-formed steel (CFS) is imper-
vious to termites and other wood-destroying insects, and does not contain treated chemicals to repel pests. CFS is resistant to mold and mildew. Steel does not provide a breeding ground as do organic materials used in construc-tion. Steel does not contain knots, twists or warps. It is always dimension-ally correct and manufactured to strict tolerances. Steel is protected from cor-rosion by a galvanized zinc coating.
Steel studs cannot absorb moisture substantially eliminating the expan-sion and contraction of construction materials and related cracks, pops and other deformities in finish. Steel does not burn and will not contribute to the spread or intensity of a fire. CFS projects can easily be designed to meet code fire rating requirements.

Durability and LongevitySure, you can get a cheap asphalt
roof made of oil impregnated paper or fiberglass that begins to deteriorate as soon as you install it. You can even look forward to replacing it every 10 years or so, or even wait until it starts leaking after the sun and ultraviolet rays have their way with it. Or you can consider protecting your invest-ment with a more durable metal roof that will withstand just about every-thing Mother Nature throws at it.
The initial cost of a metal roof will be more expensive—you get what you pay for. But overall it will save you money in the long run. Chances are you’ll never have to re-roof your home again. Over a 30-year period, you will have had to replace two asphalt roofs. Most metal roofs come with up to a 50-year warranty.
Styles, Patterns and DesignsMost people are surprised to discover
how many different styles metal roofs come in. Of course there are corrugated metal roofs, but there are also standing seam panels, tile, shingle, cedar shake, and ribbed panels that come in many different colors, patterns, and architec-tural designs to fit into just about any neighborhood. Metal roofs add value to your most important investment—your home. Some insurance companies even offer discounts for homeowners with metal roofs. Homes that have metal roofs are also appraised higher than their asphalt roof neighbors.
SustainabilityMetal roofs not only come in the
color green as an option, they are also environmentally green. They are made from recycled steel—the most recycled
material today. They are also excel-lent insulators. Not only will a metal roof reflect most heat from the sun, it can also lower your air conditioning costs and electric bill. Metal roofs have reflective values built right into the coatings. Even the darker color metal roofs today are very effective at reflecting heat and contributing signifi-cantly to the comfort of the home.
Rer oofingNext time you need a new roof,
consider metal roofing. You don’t always need to remove all the old layers of asphalt shingles to add a metal roof. Metal roofs are lightweight, durable and long lasting. A metal roof gives you that pride you take in home ownership.
