LEARNING DISABILITIES PROGRAM REVIEW SPRING TESTING

The Learning Disabilities Program Review (LDPR) will continue data collection involving identified Learning Disabled students within the TCDSB in May and June 2004. As with the Fall 2003 data collection, there are two components to the LDPR. In addition to the individual data that will be collected by the TCDSB assessment team, special education staff in each school will be asked to administer a variety of group assessments to all identified LD students in their schools in Grades 3-6. All necessary materials, along with detailed instructions, will be sent to the special education contact in each school. Individual and Group assessments are to take place between May 17th - June 11th. Summaries of results from the Fall data collection will be forwarded to schools in the near future.

Please contact Carol-Anne Hendry if you have any questions regarding the LDPR . 416-222-8282, ext. 5335 or by e-mail: [email protected].

Teenager hits mark at karate championships STEPHEN BROWN , North York Mirror Apr. 7, 2004 It is a sport with a kick.

In fact, North York resident Gianfranco Romanino, 17, kicks so well in his sport that he won two medals at the annual national karate championships in Edmonton. The young karate enthusiast captured the gold in the individual junior men's 70-plus kilogram category (16- to 17-year-olds) at the three-day event, while also helping his province win bronze in the team sparring competition.

Romanino, a Grade 11 student at Senator O'Connor high school, fought three matches in the individual division en route to his first national title.

He defeated competitors from Nova Scotia, Quebec and British Columbia before advancing to the gold medal bout where he won 7-3 on points against the New Brunswick athlete.

"My toughest fight was probably the first one because of the pressure," Romanino said. "But the best fighter was probably the B.C. fighter because of his skill level. He had the experience."

In karate, a match is three minutes long, but may be ended sooner if one competitor gets an eight-point lead on the other. A point is scored with a hit to the stomach, while a kick to the stomach or back scores two. A kick to the head or a takedown with a follow-up scores three. Romanino said his success in the gold medal match this year was due to his keeping the pressure on his opponent throughout the bout.

"Last year I got overexcited and wasn't thinking properly," he said. "This year I moved around more and was aggressive. My mind was there this year."

Romanino was also one of three Ontario competitors selected for the team sparring competition in Edmonton. In that category, he went on to uphold his undefeated record, winning one match and tying one in helping to earn bronze for his province.

The Edmonton tournament represented Romanino's third trip to the national karate championships. Last year in Montreal, he was disqualified, but won a bronze medal three years ago in the 14- to 15-year-old individual category in Toronto.

"I was a little more nervous at the other nationals, but I was calmer at this one," he said. "But it was still pretty tough. I had a lot of fun. It was fun with people from the club there, yelling and screaming beside the ring, supporting me."

Romanino, who trains at the Kan-Zen-Kai Karate Do Club, has been involved in the martial art for nine years. Ironically, he said he didn't want to take up the sport at first, but his father insisted and has remained his biggest supporter since.

Now, the younger Romanino said he likes everything about karate, saying it has given him discipline and a sense of responsibility and dedication.

Romanino's Edmonton victory has qualified him to represent Canada this September at the Junior Pan-American Games, from which the athlete hopes to qualify for the world junior championships next year. His long-term goal, he said, is to represent Canada at the 2008 Olympics.

"It feels great," he said of his karate success. "I worked so hard. The feeling of accomplishment makes it worth it."

Teacher goes above, beyond Jane Skubic Letters North York Mirror Apr. 7, 2004 Re: 'Running club keeps student healthy, alert,' Sports and Leisure, March 31.

I am a proud parent of two active club members who would like to express heartfelt thanks to a man who has gone above and beyond his duty as an educator. In a school system that has deteriorated over the past few years, anything positive for our children's health and well being is a godsend.

St. Bernard is one of the needy schools in the Catholic elementary system with a student body way over capacity and numerous portables occupying over half of the schoolyard. Health is definitely an issue when mold and rodents are part of our everyday life.

Our school was deemed to be repair prohibitive in 1999 by the school board and was thus selected for funding of a new facility. Architectural drawings were completed and our spirits were lifted only to be shattered by the news, months later, that the project fell through due to reasons we will never know.

With the recent passing of one of our precious Grade 4 students, our school community has grown even deeper in faith and love. We will maintain our motto as a School of Champions and will continue to rise above our shortfalls.

Nick Biagini is worth his weight in gold. Standing faithfully in the rain at 7:55 a.m. each morning encouraging the young runners to meet their goals is truly an act of charity.

May the angels lead them into paradise. May the martyrs come to welcome them into the

new and eternal Jerusalem. The holy sacrifice of the Mass will

be offered for their souls. May they rest in peace.
