£85,000 – £90,000 Fulltime, permanent London, Old Street We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that one day, no one will have to turn to us for help.

In 1966 three million families were living in slums and Shelter was born out of the belief that this appalling injustice must be put right.

Fifty years on, the country is in the grip of another housing crisis. A huge range of people are affected by our current housing shortage, from a generation of young people who can’t afford a home to those struggling with sub-standard housing.

In our 50th year, 100,000 children are homeless. So, while we will reflect on our achievements, we will only celebrate when everyone has a place to call home.

Our fundraising enables us to bring about change for the most vulnerable in society.

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing and homelessness. We do this by giving expert housing advice on the phone, online and face to face. We attend court to defend people at risk of losing their home. We provide specialist support services to help families keep their home or settle into a new one. And we campaign to tackle the root causes of the housing crisis so that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help.

We employ over 1,250 staff and have a network of more than 1,500 volunteers who all play a vital role in making sure no one fights bad housing or homelessness on their own.

In 2015/16 we dealt with over 5 million requests for help.

Our HistoryWe’ve been campaigning since 1966, and we won’t stop until there’s a safe, secure, affordable home for everyone.

We were formed in 1966 by Bruce Kenrick (founder chairman) and Des Wilson (founder-director), in response to the country’s massive housing crisis. Their vision – along with co-founders – was to establish one organisation to speak for the millions of ‘hidden homeless’ living in overcrowded slums. This organisation was Shelter. That same year the BBC screened Cathy Come Home; a Ken Loach directed film, about a young family pulled apart by worsening housing conditions. Watched by over 12 million people, its impact ensured public empathy and support for Shelter from our very beginning.

We’ve achieved a lot since 1966, including landmark changes in law, such as England’s introduction of the Tenancy Deposit Scheme and the ground-breaking commitment in Scotland that, from 2012, everyone will have the right to a home. But we don’t intend to rest on these achievements, so until there’s a home for everyone, we’ll keep fighting.

We will work together with our volunteers, our campaigners, our donors, our supporters and our staff to make our vision a reality”.

Our Strategy is formed of 4 objectives, the first 3 being externally facing and the 4th being internally facing:

1. Win the lasting public and political support to make housing more affordable, renting fairer and homelessness a thing of the past

2. Inspire and mobilise people to join forces with us in our fight to end homelessness and bad housing

3. Empower people with housing problems to keep, access and improve a home

Our Fundraising Strategy (to 2020)Main objectives

By 2020 we will have reached 60% of our long-term net income vision for Shelter of £50m, achieving £31.5m net income. 85% of this income will be unrestricted, giving Shelter an exceptional level of investment flexibility. We will be recruiting a sustainable 50,000+ donors per annum and will have an active regular giving base of 173,000.

Attitudes to welfare have significantly hardened over the lifetime of the last strategy. We will monitor this risk throughout the strategy and focus on those donor segments with greatest propensity to give regularly to Shelter.

The fundraising strategy will be delivered alongside Shelter’s campaigning strategy to influence public behaviour in supporting a more comprehensive safety net. Much work has been undertaken to ensure we work together to engage behavioural change and supporter audiences. We will monitor carefully the success of our supporter journey and behavioural change work and the impact on audience engagement as this will be critical to the success of the fundraising and overall Shelter strategy.

As market competition increases and 80% of charities plan to scale-up their investment in fundraising, there are four key drivers which will impact our fundraising success:

1. Cost-effective and scalable recruitment and retention of regular donors.

2. Our ability to use digital technology to harness support and drive action.

3. Profile of our work and impact with donor audiences to maintain and increase propensity to give.

4. Swift and accurate data analysis to inform investment decisions.

This strategy takes us through our 50th anniversary, which provides a unique opportunity to reposition Shelter and galvanise support.
