Establishment of a fitness center to provide an integrative medicine model of care for thewhole person.

The Dana-Farber Community Cancer Care at Whittier Street HealthCenter:

The Dana-Farber Community Cancer Care at Whittier Street Health Center is a partnershipbetween Whittier Street Health Center and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to address the cancerdisparities in the populations served by Whittier.

After more than a decade of partnering with Whittier on early detection and cancer survivorshipefforts, Dana-Farber opened a cancer clinic at the health center's brand-new Tremont Streetbuilding in January 2015. Featuring six exam rooms, large consult and meeting areas, and apatient resource room, it's believed to be the country's first dedicated oncology space in an inner-city health center.

Every two weeks, one member of a rotating group of five Dana-Farber oncologists spends a day inthe Whittier clinic, meeting with patients for screenings, consults, and educational sessions. Thenew clinic will address a sobering statistic: rates of cancer incidence and mortality are muchhigher for people of color. Hailing from 20 different countries, and predominantly made up ofpeople of color, 60 percent of Whittier's patient population lives below the poverty line.

The clinic's goal, says Christopher Lathan, MD, Dana-Farber's faculty director for Cancer CareEquity, is to "close the gap" so that cancer patients at Whittier can make a smooth transition totreatment at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center.

"In the past, when Whittier patients were referred to Dana-Farber, they often didn't show up forappointments," says Lathan, a thoracic cancer specialist at Dana- Farber, who is the new clinic'sdirector and one of its rotating oncologists. "Dana-Farber has been seeking to change this byreaching out to the community with educational sessions, free screenings, and other initiatives."

The Medical Fitness Center:

In keeping with its commitment to providing comprehensive, continuous care to its patients,Whittier is constructing a 6,800 square foot Medical Fitness Center on the ground floor of itsbuilding. The fitness center will be the site for wellness programming that uses an IntegrativeMedicine Model for the treatment of major medical and mental health issues found within theWhittier patient population, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and depression. Patientsreferred to the fitness center will receive a Prescription for Health that will address mind, body, and spirit.
