3 | SUMMER 2017

Thursday Night LiveBack for its 18th year, Thursday Night Live (formerly It’s Thursday, Let’s Dance) has returned this summer for a 10-concert series to downtown Evanston. From June 15 to August 24, each Thursday night will spotlight a different music genre from Jazz and Swing to Rock and Roll and Beatles covers. Bring friends and family to enjoy an evening of live music, dancing, and relaxing. There will be giant sized games (Scrabble, Jenga, Twister, and more) and other kids activities. A couple of friendly faces from First Northern had a fun time meeting new people and handing out free swag during the July 13th event!

First Northern’s branch on Sherman Avenue got a little more colorful in June as we hosted the artwork of KRISTEN NEVEU for the annual celebration of local creatives, Evanston Made. All month, Evanston’s studios, galleries, and businesses opened their doors to showcase artistic & artisanal works created by local artists.

Neveu was born in New York, raised in Indiana and Iowa, and lived in Chicago for 10+ years, before moving to Los Angeles in 2007 to work for Warner Bros. In the summer of 2013, she moved back to Chicago to live in the city she loves. Kristen graduated from The University of Iowa with majors in Communication Studies and Anthropology. A life-long artist, she creates mixed media collages, paintings, and installations. Her work has been exhibited at many locales across the Midwest and the West Coast, and is a part of many collections.

4 | SUMMER 2017

In March 2017, First Northern conducted a survey as a means to gather feedback from members who do not currently have an FNCU checking account. The goal was to help First Northern understand our members’ current knowledge of the three checking accounts offered and to help us consider possible updates or eliminations of these accounts.

Many findings came from the answers, comments, and suggestions and we would like to address some of the common themes.

FINDING: Many members said that they would like to see First Northern expand and offer more branch locations and ATMs in order to be more accessible.

SOLUTION: Although there are no immediate plans to expand our branch locations, we do offer Co-Op Shared Branching to accommodate your financial needs.

Shared Branching works as a cooperative effort between First Northern and 5,000 other credit union branches nationwide. You can bank at these locations and 2,000 self-service centers just like you’re at a First Northern branch, all you need is a government ID and your First Northern member number. Visit fncu.org/find-us/find-a-branch-atm/ to find your nearest ATM or shared branch.

FINDING: Our online banking system could be better. SOLUTION: We’re getting a new one! Hold tight, we are in the process of building a brand new, easy to

use, and aesthetically pleasing online banking site. We plan to have it up and running early next year.

FINDING: You don’t like ATM fees and extra charges. SOLUTION: Don’t pay ATM fees! We have over 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide for our

members, that’s more access to your money than most traditional bank customers have! You can find these ATMs by downloading the CO-OP ATM/Shared Branch Locator app for iPhone and Android, texting a zip code to 91989, calling (888) 748-3266, or by visiting fncu.org/find-us/find-a-branch-atm/.

Using First Northern Online Banking on a regular basis is another great way to avoid unnecessary fees. Be sure to log in to ensure that you have enough funds for a purchase, transfer money from one account to another, utilize Bill Pay in order to guarantee on time payments, and take advantage of Web Payments – an easy way to pay First Northern loans with funds from another financial institution.

Lastly, you will receive up to a $25 ATM surcharge rebate every year when you open an Advantage Checking account. All you need to do is sign up for the First Northern Bill Pay and E-statements! Click here for more information and to apply.

First Northern is pleased to provide FINANCIAL EDUCATION opportunities to five Rockford schools! We’ve worked with 440 teens to provide them with a solid foundation of banking, budgeting, and credit basics; an important initiative that students often lack when they graduate from high school.

Along with an in-depth financial presentation, students went through a real life budgeting simulation with a mock occupation, salary, and family.  They are thrown into “the real world” by going from station to station making choices and purchases needed in order to get through one month of expenses. During the project, participants make decisions that impact their monthly budget such as the type of car they’ll drive, where they’ll live, child care, and they even receive unexpected expenses. In the end, the students were very surprised at how hard it is to keep a budget!

If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about these programs, please contact our Business Development Department at (888) 328-8677.

You have more direct, surcharge-free* access to your money at First Northern than most traditional bank customers do!

With only four branches, we realize that we are not always the most accessible financial institution. We do, however, provide major accessibility to our members with a shared branching network that spans the entire U.S.

SHARED BRANCHING allows you to do your banking at other credit unions as if you were at a First Northern branch. Deposit and withdraw money, transfer money between funds, process loan payments, and ask for balance inquiries!

ComEd’s United Way Giving CampaignCOMED RAISES MONEY FOR UNITED WAY

Our Business Development team is looking forward to once again participating in ComEd’s United Way Giving Campaign at many of their facilities throughout Illinois this fall. Each facility hosts an employee party to encourage donations to the campaign. The events feature live entertainment including an Elvis impersonator, comedian, and even a cover band comprised of ComEd employees.

First Northern is proud to partake in the success of the campaign by DONATING 1% OF ALL LOANS opened by ComEd employees during the campaign period. If you are attending an event, look for our Business Development team and other First Northern representatives handing out swag and talking about the benefits of being a member of First Northern!

First Northern CaresWE’RE COMMITTED TO OUR COMMUNITY!The CHICAGO CARES SERVE-A-THON is the largest single day of community service in Chicago when more than 5,000 volunteers come together to transform neighborhoods and schools throughout the city of Chicago.

On June 24, First Northern employees teamed up with three busloads of Northwestern Medicine volunteers and were taken to Al Raby High School in Chicago’s Garfield Park. Together they made murals, put together a mosaic, organized the library, built benches, and landscaped, amongst several other projects.

Principal Dr. Femi Skanes spoke about the importance of beautifying the high school in order to give the students an uplifting and motivating space to spend part of their day, which is something that many of the teens don’t have at home. The volunteers transformed the school, in just one afternoon, into a brighter, happier place for the students to thrive.

We had OVER 1,000 EGGS AND PLENTY OF KIDS to help find them!

Kids met the Easter bunny, took pictures in the photo booth, enjoyed some arts and crafts, and indulged in delicious Easter treats while Steve Summers from 95.3, The Bull entertained with a live radio remote broadcast.

It was a beautiful spring morning spent with our members and friends. Thank you to all who came out!

First Northern hosted its most successful Prom Dress Drive in its four year history collecting over 100 dresses, 32 pairs of shoes, and numerous accessories!

Each spring, First Northern partners with BECCA’S CLOSET of Rockford and DREAMS DELIVERED in Evanston as an initiative to help lower the high cost prom for teens that may not otherwise be able to attend. Combined, these two organizations make prom possible for over 1,000 girls each year!

Every April, the Women’s Club of Evanston transforms its historic clubhouse into the Dreams Delivered Prom Boutique with the help of local businesses that serve as drop off locations to collect donations. The boutique then outfits Evanston Township High School girls with prom attire, makeup, and hair consultations, free of charge, for their big night.

The Rockford chapter of Becca’s Closet also serves as a boutique that collects and distributes formal wear free of charge to young women from Rockford and surrounding communities for proms, homecomings, and other special events like winter formals. Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries, a partnership organization of area ELCA congregations, operates the chapter.

Becca’s Closet regularly accepts clean, nearly new formal dresses, shoes, and accessories at their boutique located inside of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd at 1829 N. Rockton Ave. in Rockford, IL.
