On the eve of the first southern
hemisphere yearling sale for 2020, breeders believe that the disastrous
bushfires that have ravaged the eastern states of Australia could have an
impact, while the exit of a number of big-spending owners could also hurt
sales figures.
Arrowfield Stud bloodstock manager Jon Freyer, whose consignment
of yearlings is headed by the progeny of champion sire Snitzel, his own sire
Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and the emerging Dundeel (High Chaparral),
is far from predicting a bear market but admits that the auction could
experience a downturn.
“I think the market is good overall and it is always a good market up
here, but I think from a vendor’s point of view it would be prudent to be a
little circumspect about your expectations and we will certainly be that,”
Freyer told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“We will endeavour to meet the market wherever we can and Magic
Millions has done a great job (attracting buyers).
“You look around and there are still a lot of people here. We are
confident but we are not overplaying it.”
Shadwell’s Angus Gold, who spent $2.815 million on the Gold Coast last
January, Phoenix Thoroughbreds ($5 million in partnership) and Damion
Flower ($2.175 million) will not be active at this year’s auction, causing
somewhat of a shake-up of the buying hierarchy, particularly at the top end.
Their loss, however, could be counteracted to some degree by
Domeland’s apparent intent to buy at Magic Millions as well as a new
buying team leading the Hong Kong Jockey Club headed by Boomer
Bloodstock’s Craig Rounsefell.
“It is no secret that we are down three or four big buyers from last year
and that will make a significant dent in our market,” Magic Millions managing
director Barry Bowditch revealed yesterday.
“But we have worked hard to find buyers at all ends of the market, to have
people bidding anywhere from the small numbers to the big numbers.
“Bookings seem to be in line with last year and hopefully we can
overcome the loss of a few major players.”
Bowditch also acknowledged ‘the devastating fires’ in NSW, Victoria
and South Australia and that they could lead to some owners and trainers
no longer being able to attend Magic Millions.
But he said the early number of inspections had been encouraging
and is confident there will still be strong depth to the buying bench.
“Any vendors who are being realistic will be able to get their horses
sold and hopefully be well rewarded,” he said.
“Whether the average or the median holds, who knows, but our job is
to get as many horses sold as we possibly can.”
Yulong’s Sam Fairgray, who will be operating as both vendor and
buyer on behalf of owner Yuesheng Zhang, is optimistic that this week’s
auction will be on par with 2019 which achieved a Book 1 average of
$237,309 and a median of $170,000.

“There are a lot of nice horses here
and the horses in the middle bracket, there are going to be plenty for
buyers to get hold of.
“I still think the market will still be positive with the prize-money here
and the colt syndicates seem to be going along well and people are still
going to be wanting to invest in them.”
Darby Racing’s Scott Darby, who was on the ground inspecting
yearlings yesterday, said syndicators need to be selective when securing
horses they can more easily on-sell as the general economy slows.
“At times the money appeared to be there and at times it has been flat
out tough work. You have got to keep that success coming to stay in front
of people,” Darby told ANZ Bloodstock News recently.
“You have just got to be smart in what you buy. Every year you get a
few wrong with a horse at the sales that you really like, but on the other
side of things, deep down, you thought, ‘it is probably not going to sell that
well’ even though you love the horse.
“You have really got to get that balance right of what you like and what
you know will sell otherwise you can get stuck pretty badly.”
Fellow syndicators and trainers, many whom buy on spec, could also
rein in their spending this year but Bowditch said the significant prize-
money levels that have underpinned the industry’s dramatic upswing in
recent years would ensure there was strong competition for horses.
“To a degree I think there’s a little bit more of a conservative approach,
but plenty of the trainers and syndicators are speaking to us and wanting
to do business, as many as ever before, so that is positive,” he said.
“There is a huge reason for them to be here. They have a $10 million
race day, there is a lot of graduate success out of this sale and they have
our brand behind them to help them sell their horses which goes along
way with the two-year-olds.
“I would hope they have a fair bit of faith in what they are seeing out
on the ground and, come Wednesday, they will be ready to participate.”

Course proper gallops for Magic Millions hopefulsCo-trainer Ciaron Maher is pleased with Rathlin
(Fastnet Rock) and Away Game (Snitzel) as he
targets a first win in the Magic Millions 2YO
Classic (RL, 1200m). Maher took the two to
the Gold Coast on Saturday for a work-out and
to give them experience on the track ahead of
Saturday's $2 million race. The pair worked
together between races and will have another
hit-out tomorrow morning. Maher, who trains
in partnership with David Eustace, said: "Mine
are both fit and with luck will race well. They
can have their final work at the Gold Coast on
Tuesday.”
Blue Diamond tilt for Return With HonourHe may have run out of time to get Return With
Honour (Fastnet Rock) to the Gold Coast for the
Magic Millions but trainer Gerald Ryan has lofty
goals for the colt. The trainer has earmarked an
1100 metre race at Randwick on January 18
as the juvenile’s next port of call and all going
well he will then be set on a path to the Blue
Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield
on February 22. "Everything depends on that
race but so far so good," Ryan said. "The Blue
Diamond Stakes is only seven weeks after that.
So the plan would be to run on the 18th then
three weeks into the Blue Diamond Prelude
and two weeks to the Blue Diamond."
Waller eyeing Royal Ascot with sprint starsChris Waller will ramp up the preparations of
Everest (1200m) winner Yes Yes Yes (Rubick)
and triple Group 1-winning sprinter Yes Yes Yes
(Nicconi) in the coming weeks after mapping
out a plan which could culminate in a trip to
Royal Ascot. "Yes Yes Yes is going very well. He's
come back a stronger, more mature three-year-
old," Waller said. "He is due to trial on the 21st
and will resume either in the Eskimo Prince or
the Lightning, I haven't decided yet. I have to
work out what weight he is likely to get in the
Newmarket but the TJ Smith Stakes is a definite
target. The TJ seems the logical last run in
Australia before I prepare him for Ascot. Nature
Strip is also due to trial in Sydney on the 21st
then he will be first-up in the Lightning. He is
likely to run in the King's Stand and Yes Yes Yes
will be set for the Diamond Jubilee."
All-Star Mile aim for Mr QuickieGroup 1 winner Mr Quickie (Shamus Award)
is being readied for a first-up tilt at the All-
Star Mile (1600m) at Caulfield on March 14.
"He has been back in pre-training for nearly
four weeks and he'll be back in the stable on
Monday week,” trainer Phillip Stokes said. "I
saw him a few days ago and he looks fantastic.
He's got good condition on him and he had a
really good spell. He had a full six weeks out. At
this stage we are going to target the All-Star Mile
first-up. It will be the same as what we did last
preparation. We'll give him two trials leading
into his first-up run." Ten of the horses in the
field for the All-Star Mile, which is in its second
year, will be decided by public vote while the
Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Blamey
Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) are 'win and you're in'
races. There are also between three and five
wild cards to be issued by a selection panel to
make up the 15-runner field.

Hickmott pair nearing returnRobert Hickmott is aiming German imports
Schabau (Pastorius) and Django Freeman
(Campanologist) at the Brisbane winter carnival
when they make their returns from injuries.
Hickmott had hoped the pair could figure in feature
races last spring but both missed the carnival
because of injuries. Schabau won his first three
Australian starts and was high in early Melbourne
Cup markets before suffering a tendon injury.
Django Freeman, second in the 2019 German
Derby in July, arrived in Australia in August was
being prepared for the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes in
October but was ruled out because of a bone chip
in a knee. "I'm very happy with them and we've
just got to give them plenty of groundwork and
soft kilometres in their legs early," Hickmott said.
“We'll give them every opportunity to race at the
winter carnival in Brisbane. We won't be pushing
them along to get them back any quicker than they
need to. I think if we can get them nice and happy
and sound they'll be forces to be reckoned with in
Brisbane for sure."
New trainer for Booker
Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Booker
(Written Tycoon) will race out of Sydney in
2020 having left Mathew Ellerton and Simon
Zahra to join Rosehill trainer Gerald Ryan. It
is understood Booker will race through the
Sydney autumn and Brisbane winter before
her likely sale in Queensland mid-2020.
Booker races in the colours of Caulfield and
Melbourne Cup-winning owners Barrie and
Midge Griffiths, who also raced the dual Group
1 winner Response (Charge Forward).
Bushfire hits Buchan trackPlans for the 133rd running of the Buchan Cup
at Canni Creek on February 15 have been put
on hold after the East Gippsland track suffered
significant damage when being hit by bushfire.
The winning post, callers tower and running rail
were all left in need of repair after fire blazed
down the home-straight. A decision on if or
where the Cup would be run will be left until next
week. “We’ll definitely leave it up to a community
decision, it would be great to have it as a
fundraiser for the area and to lift spirits, but it will
just depend on what the locals are keen on,” club
secretary manager Ian Dunkley tole Racing.com.
“I’ve had a number of clubs generously already
call me to offer to hold the meeting so we’ll just
wait and see. While the winning post and tower
have been badly burnt, the jockeys room, offices
and bar weren’t impacted so we’ll definitely be
able to rebuild. We’re in recovery mode now, as
is the whole region, but we’re not looking too far
ahead as there’s still some forecast dangerous
weather conditions later next week.”

Thursday trial for Qld city meetingsAn experiment that could lead to a major
overhaul of midweek racing in Queensland
will begin this week. For the next five weeks
the main Queensland midweek meeting will
be run at Doomben on a Thursday in a twilight
time slot. Meetings will start at around 2.30pm
and finish shortly after 6pm (AEST). The
experiment will test whether Thursday twilights
will draw bigger crowds and turnover. A Racing
Queensland spokesman said the Thursday trial
was important for the entire industry. "It will
give us an idea of how Thursday twilights will
be accepted by punters not only on course but
also off course," he said. Doomben is expected
to get lights within the next five years and the
trial will also give an indication of how twilight-
night meetings would be received.
Gold Coast looking for prize-money boostThe Gold Coast Turf Club is to resume a push
for better prize-money with an expected
surge in trainer numbers wanting to use its
facilities. At least three interstate stables
and a Queensland trainer are believed to
be looking at either relocating or having
satellite operations on the Gold Coast. There
are already 700 horses in work at the Gold
Coast and Beaudesert, which is run by the
GCTC. The club will begin a major upgrade
on and off the track in coming months,
including night racing lights, a synthetic track
and a course proper resurface. GCTC chief
executive Steve Lines said in the near future
the club would cater for 1000 horses at the
Gold Coast and Beaudesert. "The only other
thing which needs looking at is prize-money
levels," Lines said. "We have five clubs just
over the border who are racing for (NSW)
country prize-money which is higher than
our provincial purses. I would hate to see the
situation where we are providing state-of-
the-art training facilities for interstate racing.
Racing Queensland has been very proactive
in recent times and maybe it is one thing they
will have to address soon."

Melody Belle and Te Akau Shark in trainingJamie Richards and Te Akau Racing have finalised
the programs for class performers Melody Belle
(Commands) and Te Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle)
with the pair set to be seen in Australia in the late
summer. "Melody Belle has had her first couple
of pieces of work and is coming along nicely,"
Richards told NZ Racing Desk. "She will have an
exhibition gallop at Ellerslie on Karaka Million night
(Jan 25) and then a trial at Te Aroha (Feb 4). She will
go straight to Melbourne for the Futurity Stakes at
Caulfield on February 22 and then into the All-Star
Mile (1600m), which is her major target.” Regarding
plans for Te Akau Shark, Richards continued: “He
had some nice time off in the paddock but is back
in work now as well. He is going to trial at Matamata
and then will have an exhibition gallop before
tackling the BCD Sprint at Te Rapa (February 8). He
will head to Sydney after that where his main aim
is the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on the last day of the
Championships (April 11)."

Wellington Cup immediate target for JustamaizJustamaiz (Guillotine) will head straight to the
NZ Campus of Innovation & Sport Wellington
Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) for his next start after he
was denied a run in the City Of Auckland Cup
(Gr 3, 2400m). The David Greene-trained
five-year-old was a late scratching from the
New Year’s Day race after completing a lap
of the Ellerslie track following a false start. “It
was definitely disappointing to take the horse
all the way to Ellerslie and then have to bring
him back home without actually running in
the race,” Greene said. “There was no way he
could run in the restart as he pretty much ran
a full lap of the track before he was pulled up.
I think you have to accept what has happened
and move on as there is nothing we can do
about it now. At the end of the day our bloke
had a gallop and a trip away and we still have
a horse to carry on with, so we’re taking a
positive outlook with him.”
Richards making plans for ProbabeelJamie Richards is hoping for big things from
Probabeel (Savabeel) following her easy
return win at Awapuni on Saturday. “I’m a
firm believer in giving each horse as much
confidence as possible and winning is the
best way to do that,” Richards said. “We were
looking at our options to get her started in
this campaign and the race looked a nice way
to do that. She did all she had to do and has
pulled up well after her exertions. She will
now head to the Karaka Million 3YO Classic
(1600m) at Ellerslie on the 25th and then
we will decide on her next move after that.
We’re looking at Australia but whether that
is in Melbourne for a race like the Australian
Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m) or Sydney for the
Surround Stakes (Gr.1, 1400m) is still to be
decided.”

First foal by Triple Crown hero Justify born in KentuckyThe first reported foal from the initial crop
by 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat
Daddy) was born on Friday at Amaroo Farm
in Kentucky, owners Audley Farm have
reported. The bay filly is the first foal out of
the winning mare Foreign Affair (Exchange
Rate), a half-sister to the Group 3-winning,
Group 1-placed filly So Perfect (Scat Daddy).
While Audley is located near Berryville,
Virginia, the Justify filly will be designated
a Kentucky-bred after Foreign Affair was
boarded at Amaroo near Lexington to drop
her foal there. The filly was born around 11
pm, a few days ahead of her expected arrival.
"The mare was due to foal on the tenth, so it's
just a few days early, but that's OK," Audley's
Jamie McDiarmid said. "The main thing is
that the foal is happy and healthy. So far,
everything has gone really well. She'll come
back to be Virginia-registered, and the mare
will stay here and foal out a Virginia-bred
next year. That's the plan."

Thoroughbred breeders have
banded together as the ongoing
bushfire crisis hits across three
states with vendors promising
to donate $500 for every horse sold in Book
1 at this week’s Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale to aid those affected by the
disaster. It is expected to raise more than
$300,000 with more than 800 horses to go
under the hammer. “A lot of vendors were
talking about what we could do to help
those who need it the most and there was
overwhelming support when this idea was
discussed,” chief executive of Thoroughbred
Breeders Australia (TBA) Tom Reilly said.
The money will be deducted from the sale
price and donated to charities that support
the victims of the fires. TBA president Basil
Nolan said: “I think this is a great effort as
many of the vendors have had a very tough
time in recent years with drought and many
have been dealing with fires themselves. The
industry is a real community and everybody
I’ve spoken with wanted to do something.
You cannot look at what’s going on and
not be affected by it.” The money will be
donated immediately after the sale and be
directed at those charities that help victims
of the crisis. The TBA announcement comes
as Magic Millions and its sponsor, The Star
Gold Coast, both committed $50,000 to the
bushfire relief.

Inglis’ The Chairman’s Sale, an auction
offering elite broodmares and race fillies
at Riverside Stables in Sydney, will be
conducted with zero sales commission
for the second year in a row.
The sales company, in a bid to lure more
high-class breeding stock away from rival Magic
Millions, introduced the commission structure
in 2019, resulting in the $2.25 million sale-
topping Maastricht (Mastercraftsman), who
was sold carrying a sibling to subsequent Group

and the $2 million mare Srikandi (Dubawi). In
total, 55 lots sold for an average of $422,455.
“We were absolutely determined to run a
very successful Chairman’s Sale in 2019 and
thanks to amazing support from firstly our
vendors and secondarily our buyers, it worked
out well,’’ Inglis bloodstock sales and marketing

Sale – as well as the accompanying Australian
Broodmare and Weanling Sale – is again a success.
“The level of interest from people looking
to be a part of The Chairman’s Sale in 2020
has been striking, but we want to maintain the
boutique feel to it and will be conscious of this
when considering entries.’’
This year’s sale will be held on Friday, May
8, after the two-day Inglis Australian Broodmare
and Weanling Sale.
The Australian Broodmare Sale will follow
The Chairman’s Sale, on May 10 and 11.

Figures for foals, yearlings and two-year-olds broken down by year
| 18 |
BY TIM ROWE | @ANZ_NEWS
Yulong owner Yuesheng Zhang
could be on the verge of Group 1
two-year-old success with both last
week’s impressive debut winner
Fresh (Fastnet Rock) and the unraced filly
Hungry Heart (Frankel) on a Blue Diamond
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) path.
The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained
Fresh, who was a $380,000 Magic Millions
Gold Coast purchase, won by three lengths at
Geelong last Thursday.
“The racing team at the moment is going
really well. The filly we bought here last year
Fresh had her first start the other day and
won well,” Yulong’s chief operating officer
Sam Fairgray said.
“All being well, she will head towards the
Blue Diamond.”
Fairgray said the Chris Waller-trained
Hungry Heart, who impressed in a Rosehill
barrier trial on December 30, scoring by a
length in a slick 54.76 seconds, would also be
aimed at the rich Melbourne juvenile race on
February 22.
“At this stage, she will have a start in a
week and will probably head towards the
Blue Diamond as well, depending on how she
comes through her first start,” he said.
“Right from day one, Chris Waller has said
she’s got a lot of talent and he thought she
could have gone through to the first two-year-
old races, but we have been patient with her.”
Yulong has a draft of ten yearlings at the
Gold Coast including two by Exceed And
Excel (Danehill), I Am Invincible (Invincible
Spirit) and Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s
Choice), all legitimately proven stallions.
“The other good thing is, all of them are
out of proven broodmare sires,” he said.
“You have got Zabeel, Exceed And Excel,
Street Cry, Hussonet and Fastnet Rock, so
pedigree-wise, you give yourself a great
chance by buying one of these yearlings.”
Among the draft is a sister to dual Group
1-winning sprinter Extreme Choice (Not A
Single Doubt) whose own first crop yearlings
sell this year.
“This filly and Extreme Choice are very
similar. It is not a big family, but she has got
plenty of quality and strength about her,” he
said.
“Luke (Wilkinson) has a soft spot for her
and he is the one who could really see the
similarities from when he picked out Extreme
Choice as a yearling.”
Mihalyka aiming for autumn riches after lucrative spring
Not content with a brilliant spring, Laurel
Oak Bloodstock’s Louis Mihalyka is already
looking forward to the autumn headed by
promising three-year-old gelding Pancho
(Dissident).
The bloodstock agent bought and races
the Chris Waller-trained Pancho, a last-start
winner of the Connoisseur Stakes (Listed,
1800m) at Flemington in November, with
clients and has Group 1 ambitions next
campaign.
A winner of three of his nine starts,
Pancho is back in pre-training and is likely to
target the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m),
the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and
the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m), which
is set to be the improving son of Dissident’s
(Sebring) ultimate autumn goal.
The Newgate Farm-based Dissident,
whose oldest crop are three-year-olds, has
13 yearlings catalogued at this week’s Magic
Millions sale.

Meanwhile, the popular Mihalyka, who has been at the Gold
Coast inspecting yearlings to add to his squad of horses, also has
big ambitions for Canberra-trained sprinter Handle The Truth (Star
Witness) who landed the $1.3 million Kosciuszko (1200m) for country-
trained horses at Randwick in October.
Prepared by Keith Dryden in the nation’s capital, the four-year-old,
who has won seven of his 15 starts, will be given his chance to gain a
start in the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm during
the Queensland Winter Carnival when he returns from a spell.
Star Witness has 18 yearlings on offer on the Gold Coast including
the half-sister to 2019 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Vow And
Declare (Declaration Of War).
Emotional win for WhitbyThe Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Jen Rules (Redoute’s Choice)
made it two wins in a row on Saturday when scoring on the Kensington
track at Randwick and the moment was not lost on owner Max Whitby.
The four-year-old, who is also raced in partnership by Neil Werrett,
is named after Whitby’s late wife Jen and he cheered the mare home
from the Gold Coast Turf Club with the mare’s breeder Ron Gilbert of
Highgrove Stud by his side at an Aquis Farm-hosted trackside function.
A $500,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase, Jen
Rules is out of Fate Rules (Encosta De Lago) who is a half-sister to
Group 2-winning stallion Jet Spur (Flying Spur) and the stakes-placed
Critical List (Danehill). Jen Rules, who took her record to four wins
from 14 starts with Saturday’s win, is also from the same family as last
season’s Group 2 winner Leonardo Da Hinchi (Hinchinbrook) who
was recently retired to stand at stud in Western Australia.
The Snowdens are now likely to give Jen Rules her chance at a
valuable stakes win.

Beauty Legacy (Fiorente) brought a
pixel of clarity to a fuzzy Four-Year-
Old Classic Series picture with an
impressive debut victory in the
Class 2 Broadwood Handicap (1400m) at Sha
Tin yesterday afternoon.
Trainer John Size confirmed the Hong
Kong Classic Mile (1600m) on January 27 as the
Australian Group 2 winner’s next stop following
a half-length victory.
“He’s got the rating so he’s not looking for
figures, we’ve just got to sort out his racing,” Size
said. “We’ll go to a mile next start and keep him
in the Classic Series – we’ll go in the series and
trial him in between, try to contain his energy
and hope we have similar luck again.”
Size, Hong Kong’s 11-time champion
trainer, admitted to some reservations about
the gelding, known as Hawkshot in his
homeland, with regard to how he might handle
his first day test.
“The truth is I’m quite relieved with the
performance because I was quite concerned
before I even took the horse, I knew he’d have
some management issues on race day. So far, so
good!” he said.
Joao Moreira sought and found cover from
gate 12, smothered the talented import in a
cosy berth towards the rear, and gambled on a
rail run for home that paid off handsomely.
“John Size told me to ride him as I did; jump
out and try to switch him off because he is a bit
temperamental,” the Brazilian said.
“We wanted to make sure he kept all of his
energy together and used it at the right part of the
race, which is what happened – he got behind, he
got relaxed and when I started to squeeze him to
go forward and try to go for gaps he showed his
class. He didn’t hesitate; he went past, got the split
on the inside and won impressively.”
Moreira was clearly taken with Beauty
Legacy’s ability but was not getting too carried
away with Classic Series talk.
“He is one of a kind,” he said, “he’s got
presence, he’s got temperament, he’s got scope
and he’s got ability as well. Horses that get back
first time out in such a strong class of race and
do what he’s just done, they must have class
and I think he’s one of them.
“He feels like he’s promising. It’s hard to
say he is the one (to win the Derby) right now
because there are a lot of horses untouched, but
as time goes by we’ll see them all and there’s no
doubt he’s one of those that is shining at the
moment.”
Size, too, was suitably taken with Beauty
Legacy’s performance shouldering 129lb, but
he knows his charge will have to learn from his
experience and repeat the performance if he is to
make his mark on the three-race Classic Series.
“He was actually able to come through
that first test quite well. The horses that start
in Hong Kong rated above 90, very few of them
win their first start, so you can’t be anything but
complimentary towards the performance of the
horse,” he said.
“Today, everything went perfectly. Whether
that happens in the future is another matter,
but he did draw a bad gate today; he showed
he can give away a start and win, so we learned
something. He was a little bit anxious today,
first start at Sha Tin, so when he comes back
next start for his second run, you’ll know then
whether he’s going to be manageable or not –
he’s going to be worse or better.
“After I watched his races in Australia I
thought he was going to take some managing
so we’d have to contain that energy so he uses it
in the correct manner,’ Size continued.
“He’s got some management issues in his
racing manner so we have to iron those out
more or less immediately.”
Moreira left the track with a treble, having
hit the board earlier when Supreme Witness
(Stryker) also overcame draw 12 to win the Class
5 Sun Wui Handicap (1400m). The Brazilian
took the Tony Cruz-trained gelding forward to
post handily in the run before kicking for home
and holding on by a neck.
And Moreira saw off a clutch of Classic
Series aspirants when driving Chefano (Silvano)
to an overdue first Hong Kong win in the Class
2 Caroline Hill Handicap (1800m). The John
Moore-trained five-year-old had placed second
in his three previous starts.
Classic Series hopefuls Reliable Team
(Reliable Man), Enjoying (Dundeel) and Super
Oasis (Rock ‘n’ Pop) posted positive efforts,
placing second, third and fourth, respectively.

Will Power for WhyteDouglas Whyte’s good form continued
with Will Power (Power) following up a mid-
December debut win with a smart victory in the
Class 4 Link Handicap (1200m, dirt).
The four-year-old’s win was Whyte’s 20th
of his debut term, a haul that has prompted
comparisons with Hong Kong’s next two most
recent rookie handlers, Frankie Lor and Jimmy
Ting. The former bagged a record first-season
haul of 65 in 2017/18, while the latter tallied 38
wins last term.
Whyte rolled out of the January 1 fixture
with 19 on the board, while Lor had 31 at that
stage of his first term and Ting had 22. But, as
the former champion jockey pointed out, such
bare comparisons lack depth.
“I’m not going to compare because then we
should compare how many transfer horses I’ve
had and how many older horses and younger
horses and so forth, and how many runners
I’ve had. I’m not comparing anything, I’m just
trying to get the horses to the races in the best
possible condition and hoping they let down
and run well,” Whyte said.
“This season I didn’t set targets. I didn’t set
a target the first season I was a jockey, it was just
as many winners as I could possibly ride and
from there on in, I started setting targets.
“It’s a very new experience for me, so as
long as I can keep the horses healthy and more
so in a happy condition, I’ll just keep turning
them up to the races and hopefully they do their
job.”
Whyte was delighted with top-weighted
Will Power, who had to overhaul rivals down
the home straight to win by two and a quarter
lengths with his ears pricked.
“He’s improved but he still had to come and
do it the hard way and bring up another good
performance in order to win the way he did,”
the trainer said.
“If there’s a race that presents itself on the
dirt, why break a winning formula? If there’s
not a dirt race, I’m not afraid of going to turf,
he’s trialled well on it – I just hope there’s a bit
of give in the ground because he does come
down hard on his legs, and that would be the
only concern, that he doesn’t let down like he
does on the dirt.”
Zac Purton kept tabs on leader Moreira
in the jockeys’ premiership with a double on
Cheerful Star (Excelebration) and Noble Steed
(Street Cry), two days after his 37th birthday.
The Australian’s 50th win of the campaign
came when Cheerful Star edged the Vincent
Ho-ridden God Of Dragon (Red Dazzler) in
a ding-dong battle for the Class 4 Leighton
Handicap (1800m).
His 51st was achieved in the Po Leung Kuk
Cup Handicap (1400m) aboard the Francis Lui-
trained Noble Steed. Purton is two from two
on the Hong Kong International Sale graduate,
who held his rivals by three quarters of a length.
Premiership leader Ricky Yiu notched his
31st win this season when Encore Boy (Smart
Missile) landed the Class 3 Hoi Ping Handicap
(1200m) under Silvestre de Sousa.
Dennis Yip had a slow time of things
through the early part of this season before
unleashing four winners in December to
accelerate his win accrual, and the handler got
his 2020 tally rolling with the Matthew Poon-
ridden Trust Me (Guillotine) in the Class 4 Yun
Ping Handicap (1000m).
Ever Strong (Savabeel) relishes the Sha Tin
dirt and notched his fourth win on the surface
when taking the Class 5 Ventris Handicap
(1200m, dirt) under Vincent Ho. That gave
trainer Manfred Man his 10th win this term.
Baltic Whisper (Charge Forward) ended his
first Hong Kong campaign back in 2017/18 with
two wins from six starts but Danny Shum’s charge
had not posted a victory since March of that season
until he showed resilience to land the Class 3
Sunning Handicap (1000m). The six-year-old tried
to make all and rallied hard for jockey Grant van
Niekerk when headed by Ka Ying Master (Snitzel),
going on to score by a neck at odds of 7/1.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off
a remarkable training feat by
managing to rejuvenate the
once retired Black Heart Bart
(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and
second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three
years on from his first victory in the Caulfield
feature.
Western Australian Smith took over the
Warrnambool stables once owned by Black
Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir
and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt
to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.
Smith conceded that he was not overly
confident that Black Heart Bart would make
it back to the races until an encouraging
Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.
"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but
then he trialled well," Smith said.
"His first race was good and then his second
run was plain, but we thought getting him up to
the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't
be chasing all the time.
"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s
Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking
despite being last and a long way off the leader
Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but
the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"
Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little
bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer
Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart
sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow
margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his
first trip away and this was his first time racing
the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I
think it's important if I can just keep him in his
right grade I can keep him progressing along.
We won't aim too high I don't think at this
stage. And I think if we come back this time
next year we're going to have a bona fide Group
1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his
claim for a potential shot at The
Everest (1200m) when silencing
his doubters with an impressive
victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at
The Valley last night.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding
harboured plenty of criticism after his last
start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)
when he failed to settle on the front end.
However, he showed he is a bona fide Group
1 horse with an impressive win in the $1
million sprint.
Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip
began well from the inside barrier and was able
to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.
The track record holder over the course
and distance from last year's McEwen Stakes
(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly
around the turn and was able to hold off a
gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a
short neck. Continued on page 2>>

A surprisingly slow run Melbourne
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on Tuesday
turned Australia’s favourite race
into a sprint home that resulted in
the first five horses crossing the line less than
a length apart in a time that was 8.46 seconds
outside of Kingston Rule’s (Secretariat) track
record.
Even allowing for the fact that the race was
run on a soft 5 track, the time was excessively
slow with the leaders clocking a pedestrian
1:44.80 (13.10) for the first 1600 metres.
The final 1600 metres was naturally quicker
but not dramatically so with that distance
covered in 1:40.23 (12.52 200m rate).
The only serious tempo came into the
$7,750,000 race from the 1000 metres with that
final section clocking 59.86 – then 47.13 (last
800m), 35.08 (last 600m) and 23.60 for the final
400 metres.
And in a bumping, keenly contested
finish the Australian-bred Vow And Declare
(Declaration Of War) got the nod by a head
with Prince Of Arran (Shirocco) placed second
and Il Paradiso (Galileo) placed third after the
relegation of Master Of Reality (Frankel) to
fourth.
Next was the appropriately named Surprise
Baby (Shocking), the other local hope who
returned some of the fastest closing sectionals
of the race in coming from 20th to finish (0.9
lengths) fifth.
Surprise Baby ran his last 1000 metres in
57.86, last 800 metres in 45.68, last 600 metres
in 33.79, last 400 metres in 22.77 with his final
200 metres in 11.36.
The winner Vow And Declare, who worked
in the early stages from his wide barrier and
then obtained a perfect trip in third spot under
an inspired Craig Williams-ride, dug deep to
score clocking 59.85 (last 1000m), 46.95 (last

to the front at the home turn and then dashed
clear to defeat her main rival by two and a
quarter lengths in the time of 1:09.89.
California Zimbol’s early sectionals were
very good. Clocked from the 1000 metres, her
200 metre breakdown was: 11.02, 11.25 (400m
in 22.27), 11.83 (600m in 34.10), 11.00 (800m
in 45.10) and 11.25 to give her a fast final 1000
metre time of 56.35.
It was California Zimbol’s fifth race start,
her third win and her first at stakes level. Her
experienced co-trainer Peter Snowden saying
post-race that connections would now target other
fillies’ features over the Melbourne Spring Carnival,
adding that he had always held her in high regard.
Another winner to impress on the watch
at Caulfield was the Godolphin-raced sprinter
Trekking (Street Cry) who gained an eleventh
hour berth into Saturday’s $14 million The
Everest (1200m) by taking out the Schillachi
Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m).
After racing back in seventh place on the
rails, Trekking saved ground closer to the rails
at the home turn, hit the front at the 100 metres
and then battled strongly to defeat the speedy
Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi) by a long neck.
Time for the 1100 metres was a fast 1:02.32
(11.33 200m rate), equivalent to 1200 metres in
1:07.98.
And Trekking’s sectionals were very smart,
his 200 metre breakdown (from the 1000m)
was: 10.71, 10.50 (400m in 21.21), 10.91 (600m
in 32.12) 10.68 (800m in 42.80) and 11.20 for a
fast final 1000 metres of 54.00.
The winner of the Stradbroke Handicap
(Gr 1, 1400m) in June, Trekking is now in
tomorrow’s Everest with a better chance than
his odds might indicate in a very strong field.
In the Ladbrokes Stakes (registered as
Caulfield Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) the Irish-bred
import Cape Of Good Hope (Galileo) scored a
narrow but very good win in this Group 1 race at
his Australian debut.
After settling in seventh place, one off the
rails, he got into clear running nearing the 200
metres and then came with a strong late bid to
defeat Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) by a short
half head in a time of 2:02.51.
The early tempo was not strong with the
first 1400 metres clocking 1:28.17 (12.59 200m
rate) with the final 600 metres in a quick 34.34
(11.44 200m rate).
That resulted in Cape Of Good Hope
returning fast closing sectionals of 33.74 for his
last 600 metres, 22.19 (last 400m) with his final
200 metres in 11.31.
That was a very smart effort especially
considering it was Cape Of Good Hope’s first
start since racing at Saratoga in August.
It should also be pointed out that the lack
of a solid early tempo proved costly for the
favourite Avilius (Pivotal) who faced the task
of making ground from ninth in the sprint
home.
His late-closing (1.7 lengths) fourth was
therefore full of merit with Avilius clocking fast
fractions of 33.68 (last 600m), 22.19 (last 400m)
and 11.28 for his final 200 metres.

The Anthony Freedman-trained
colt Super Seth (Dundeel) really
showed his talent with impressive
closing sectional times in his
exciting burst to grab victory on the post in
Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).
After settling back in eighth place, tracking
a solid tempo, Super Seth arrived in time to
defeat Alligator Blood (All Too Hard), who had
seemingly held a winning break of five lengths
in the straight, by a nose in a time of 1:36.44.
Super Seth returned the fastest closing
sectionals of the race with his last 1200 metres
in 1:10.73, last 1000 metres in 58.55, last 800
metres in 46.32, last 600 metres in 34.23, and
last 400 metres in 22.56.
But the feature of those times was the 200
metres splits for the last 600 metres: 11.66, 11.25
and 11.31, fractions that quickened off a solid
mid-race tempo.
The runner-up, the David Vandyke-
trained Alligator Blood also deserves
acknowledgement.
He tracked the free-running leader
Roccabascerana (Fighting Sun), went to
the front on turning for home, held a clear
advantage at the 200 metres and was only
caught in the last few strides.
Alligator Blood’s early sectionals were
good, in particular his 1000 metre section of
59.56, from the 1400 metres to the 400 metres.
That mid-race pace was telling for the
favourite Dalasan (Dakakhani) who went
forward from his outside barrier (16) and
settled back in third place, without cover,
behind a solid tempo, so his effort in holding on
for (3.7 lengths) fifth was certainly sound under
the circumstances.
However, there was no such tempo in the
Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), with the
fillies’ classic turning into a sprint home with
Flit (Medaglia d’Oro) claiming a nose victory
from Missile Mantra (Smart Missile) with
Southbank (Fastnet Rock) a short half head
away third.
Time for the 1600 metres was 1m 37.19,
which was almost three seconds outside of the
track record, after the first 1000 metres clocked a
moderate 1:02.26 (12.45 200m rate) with the last
600 metres in a quick 34.93 (11.64 200m rate).
Subsequently, Flit’s rider Hugh Bowman
said the slow pace almost cost his mount
victory, the filly taking a while to accelerate
when a split finally presented in the latter
stages.
The lack of early pace also told significantly
against the runner-up Missile Mantra whose
racing style again saw the Peter and Paul
Snowden-trained filly settle near last before
flashing home in the dying stages for second.
Missile Mantra returned the fastest closing
sectionals of the race with her last 1000 metres
in 58.88, last 800 metres in 46.24, last 600 metres
in 33.98, last 400 metres in 22.40 with her final
200 metres in 11.46.
Earlier in the day, her stablemate
California Zimbol (I Am Invincible) stamped
her potential with an impressive win over the
well-performed Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible)
in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).
Having her second run this preparation,
California Zimbol raced in second place, went

in a keenly contested finish where only a length
separated the first seven at the post.
The winner was the British-bred Chief
Ironside (Lawman) who scored by a short head
from Cliff’s Edge (Canford Cliffs) with Best Of
Days (Azamour) a short head away third in a
time of 1:35.46 (first 1000 metres in 59.41 and
final 600 metres in 36.05).
The runners responsible for the solid tempo
were Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) who led and
Cliff’s Edge, who raced at his girth, and both did
well considering their early efforts, especially
Cliff’s Edge who fought bravely for second
while Dreamforce was far from disgraced in
finishing (0.7 lengths) fifth.
One to catch the eye in the race was Debt
Agent (Thorn Park), a multiple Group 1 winner
in Singapore who was having his second start
in Australia and he made good late ground for
seventh, beaten only a length.
Debt Agent returned the quickest closing
sectional of the race with his last 1400 metres
in 1:21.64, last 1200 metres in 1:09.90, last 1000
metres in 58.33, last 800 metres in 47.09, last
600 metres in 35.16 and last 400 metres in 24.21.
At Moonee Valley’s Friday night meeting,
the quality filly Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible)
staged a dashing display in taking out the
Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
Having her third run back, she showed
surprisingly good early pace from barrier two
and after almost leading in the early stages,
she settled in third place on the rails, tracking
a solid tempo.
Craig Williams eased her across heels on
turning for home, she then grabbed the lead
on passing the 100m before going on to score
in good style by three-quarters lengths from the
West Australian Vital Silver (Wanted) in a time
of 1:09.29.
Loving Gaby’s early sectionals were
impressive (from the 1000m): 21.21 (first
200m), 32.61 (first 600m), 45.11 (first 800m) and
56.73 for the final 1000 metres.
However, the last word this week goes to
the Jean Dubois-trained filly See You Soon
(Siyouni) who impressed in winning the
Kirkham Plate, for two-year-olds (1000m) at
Randwick on Saturday.
After a slow beginning, See You Soon was last
early on in the six-horse field before dashing home
to score by a short neck from the promising Peter
and Paul Snowden-trained filly Dame Giselle (I
Am Invincible) in the smart time of 57.77.
In a race that developed into a sprint home,
See You Soon showed a sparkling turn of speed,
clocking 32.89 (last 600m) and 21.62 for her
final 400 metres.
And even taking into account the
amount of fast times at Randwick recently,
closing sectionals of that standard are quite
outstanding, especially by a two-year-old filly
who was having her first race start.

The Japanese mare Lys Gracieux
(Heart’s Cry) stamped her class
in no uncertain manner with a
decisive victory in a solidly run
Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley on
Saturday – a performance she endorsed on the
clock.
Having her first start in Australia, Lys
Gracieux settled nicely back in 11th place from
her wide barrier before Damian Lane brought
her into the race with a strong, wide move from
the 600 metres.
Momentarily, the three-year-old colt
Castelvecchio (Dundeel) seemed to have
stolen a winning break, but Lys Gracieux went
to another level when asked by Lane halfway
down the straight, and she immediately put
the race beyond question with a quick final 200
metres in 11.22.
She then went on to win by a length and a
half from Castelvecchio, who ran the race of his
life in taking second with the well-performed
New Zealander Te Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle)
two lengths away third.
Time for the race was a really smart 2:04.21
(12.17 200m rate), equivalent to 2000 metres
in 2:01.57, and 1.27 seconds outside of Winx’s
outstanding track record of 2:02.94 (12.05 200m
rate) established in 2017.
The genuine tempo was set by the Aidan
O’Brien-trained mare Magic Wand (Galileo)
who led the field under Ryan Moore before
fighting back well for (3.9 lengths) fourth.
Magic Wand’s solid early sections were: 23.46
(first 400m), 35.10 (first 600m), 47.05 (first 800m),
59.43 (first 1000m), 1:11.56 (first 1200m), 1:23.67
(first 1400m) and 1:35.47 for the first 1600 metres
(from the 2000m to the 400m).
Lys Graceieu’s final sectionals were
therefore very good - especially noteworthy was
her final 2000 metre time of 1:59.51 (first 1000
metres in 60.77 and last 1000 metres in 58.74).
The other feature of Lys Graceieu’s
performance was her aforementioned final 200
metres in 11.22, which is very smart considering
she produced that burst when needed, despite
having raced at a solid tempo throughout.
The runner-up, the three-year-old
Castelvecchio also did well on the watch,
clocking 59.53 for his final 1000 metres, so too
the third-placed Te Akau Shark who clocked
58.80, the second quickest last 1000 metres of
the race.
While the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
winner Kings Will Dream (Casamento) staged
a nice effort as he settled near the tail of the
field from a wide barrier, went deep rounding
the home turn and then battled on quite well
for (6.6 lengths) sixth, clocking 59.50 for his
final 1000 metres.
The Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) was also a
race with a very genuine tempo, which resulted
