    Financial statistics aside, the

    Tokyo Yushun remains a crucial,

    breed-shaping race - the most

important of them all in Japan -

at a time when, globally, Classic

    horses are proving less attractive

    as a stallion prospect. The

    Kentucky Derby, as a ten-furlong

contest, is less affected than the

    standard mile-and-a-half Classic

but, these days, it is a rarity that an

    Epsom Derby-winning three-year-

old stands out as an exciting potential sire.

In Japan, the Tokyo Yushun remains the race that every owner wants

to win above all others - more than the Arima Kinen (Gr 1, 2500m) or the

Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) - and, generally, a lucrative career at stud awaits

the winner and those in nearest pursuit.

“For all Japanese horsemen, the Japanese Derby is a very special

race to win,” jockey Yuichi Fukunaga, who won the Tokyo Yushun on

Wagnerian (Deep Impact) in 2018, told ANZ Bloodstock News through an

interpreter yesterday. “It is difficult since the horses are so young but is

easily the highest status race to win each year.”

Five of the top seven Japanese stallions in 2019 by earnings ran in the

Tokyo Yushun; among them were two winners, Deep Impact (Sunday

Silence) and King Kamehameha (Kingmambo), a runner-up in Heart’s

Cry (Sunday Silence) and two who finished just behind the placegetters,

Rulership (King Kamehameha) and Daiwa Major (Sunday Silence).

Of the two others who did not run in the Tokyo Yushun, Stay Gold

(Sunday Silence) was a late maturer who would add Group 1 wins at a mile

and a half in the Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) and the Dubai Sheema

Classic (Gr 1, 2400m), while Lord Kanaloa (King Kamehameha), despite

being by a Derby winner, was campaigned as a sprinter-miler at home and

    abroad.

With Japanese influence ever-increasing throughout the racing

and bloodstock worlds, all eyes on Sunday afternoon will be on the

Fuchu racecourse, 25 kilometres west of downtown Tokyo, in search of

the next Deep Impact or King

    Kamehameha.

    Yahagi sends out the

    impressive Contrail (Deep Impact),

who took the Hopeful Stakes (Gr

    1, 2000m) as a late two-year-old

    before returning a dominant

winner in the first leg of the

    Japanese Triple Crown, the Satsuki

    Sho (Gr 1, 2000m) - the Japanese

2,000 Guineas - at Nakayama last

month. Fukunaga will take the ride

on the unbeaten colt from gate five.

Lane will be legged aboard Contrail’s

main rival, Satsuki Sho runner-up Salios (Heart’s Cry). A juvenile Group

1 winner himself, having won the Asahi Hai Futurity (Gr 1, 1600m) in

tremendous style last December, he is out of German mare Salomina

(Lomitas), who won the Preis der Diana (Gr 1, 2200m), the German Oaks,

for Australian Bloodstock before being sold to Katsumi Yoshida. He will

jump from barrier 12 in the 18-horse field.

It is Contrail, though, who shapes as a potential heir apparent for the

late Deep Impact. Almost a year on from his death, it appears that the

Japanese legend - a winner of seven Group 1 races in 2005 and 2006 and

a sire of 46 Group 1 winners - may have unearthed his magnus opum, his

pièce de résistance, the horse capable of matching his sire’s feats on the

racetrack and who will be given the chance to emulate his success in the

    breeding barn.

“I think he has the potential to be one of the greats,” Fukunaga said.

“He just keeps getting better and better so I am really looking forward to

seeing the rest of his career. The sky seems to be the limit with this colt.”

Fukunaga has ridden many a top-liner: Cesario (Special Week) and

her son Epiphaneia (Symboli Kris S), Just A Way (Heart’s Cry), Eishin

Preston (Green Dancer), Real Steel (Deep Impact) and Vivlos (Deep

    Impact), among others.

While Fukunaga’s sole Derby win came on Wagnerian, the 43-year-old

has been legged up on classy horses like Real Steel and Epiphaneia in the

blue riband and has rarely finished far from the winner. He believes that

the unbeaten Contrail is primed to add the Tokyo Yushun to his already

burgeoning record, taking him to five wins from five starts.

“From his form, his temperament and everything, he is the right

kind of horse to have going into the Derby,” he said. “Other than his dam

(Rhodochrosite), who raced at shorter distances, he has a pedigree that

should get him there as well.

Winkers applied to Carter favourite Smart filly Gotta Kiss (Not A Single Doubt) will

wear winkers for the first time as she chases

her maiden black-type win in the Bill Carter

Stakes (Listed, 1110m) at Doomben tomorrow.

Trainer Steve O’Dea is hopeful the application

of winkers will stop the two-year-old filly from

laying in under pressure. "She has worked in

them this week," he said yesterday. "Before

the coronavirus we were only giving her a light

winter and to skirt around the better races. But

she gets her chance for black-type on Saturday."

Coast races to determine Atkins fieldRaces at the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast today

will play a key role in unravelling a complicated

set of scenarios to determine the J J Atkins Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) field. After first acceptances were

taken for the J J Atkins, 30 horses were still in

contention for a place in the field next Saturday.

As it stands, Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr

3, 1200m) runner-up Tick Tock Boom (Spirit Of

Boom) has the 18th and final place in the field.

Uncomplicated (Akeed Mofeed), 19th on the

ballot, will go past him if she runs in the first

three at the Gold Coast, while Neutron (Starcraft)

(22nd) See Marie (Sebring) (24th) and Corvo

(Spirit Of Boom) (26th) would also go past Tick

Tock Boom if they won or run second at the Gold

Coast. The Stuart Kendrick-trained Way Beyond

(Spill The Beans) and Superare (Exceed And

Excel) could also make the Atkins field if results

fall their way at the Sunshine Coast.

Barr breaks new groundStewart Barr has had plenty of success as

an owner and breeder but the renowned

Queensland horseman has a good chance to

become a stakes-winning trainer as he saddles

Shadow Of Time (Time For War) in the Fred Best

Classic (Gr 3, 1350m) at Doomben tomorrow.

The gelding has won four of his eight starts and

showed he was up to top-class with his last-start

    seventh in a 1400-metre three-year-old Quality

at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago. "I don't like

putting wraps on my horses but I think he will give

the Fred Best a real go," Barr said. "At his last run

he got pushed three and four deep without cover.

Then in the straight he got buffeted about. After all

that he only got beaten about 1.6 lengths. It was a

very good run and Dale Smith who rode him was

    also full of praise."

Shalwa chasing black typeStud-bound mare Shalwa (O’Reilly) will be

after an elusive black type victory in the Helen

Coughlan Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Doomben

tomorrow, before she heads to the breeding

barn this season. She showed she was up to

stakes company when second in the Just Now

Quality (Listed, 1350m) during the Brisbane

summer, but trainer Tony Gollan wasn't entirely

happy with her form. "We took the blinkers off

her in March and she has been able to get out

in distance and be strong," Gollan said. "Shalwa

is off to stud this year and this is a chance for

her to get more black type. She really has turned

things around since we made the gear change."

Queensland riding ranks thinThe jockey shortage for Queensland’s winter

carnival has been compounded by another

suspension for Baylee Nothdurft and injury

to Matt McGillivray. Group 1-winning jockey

    McGillivray will miss tomorrow’s Doomben

meeting after he was injured in a fall at the

Sunshine Coast on Wednesday night. Northdurft

was again suspended for careless riding at the

meeting and will need a stay to take mounts at

the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) meeting

next Saturday. The coronavirus travel restrictions

mean only a few interstate jockeys will be riding

in Brisbane over the next two weeks. Queensland

Jockeys Association boss Glen Prentice said

    McGillivray suffered apparent concussion after

being knocked out and was complaining of neck

soreness. “The doctors are doing further scans

today before he can be released,” he said.

Newnham splits juvenile filliesMark Newnham will split his two-year-old fillies

between states with Mrs Maisel (Hinchinbrook)

staying in Sydney while Panna Cotta (Fastnet

Rock) has arrived in Brisbane for a stakes race

    opportunity. Listed-placed behind the unbeaten

Macroura (Snitzel) last time out, Panna Cotta has

been scratched from Rosehill and will get another

chance in black-type company in the Bill Carter

Stakes at Doomben. In sending Panna Cotta

north, Newnham has taken a longer-term view

as he seeks to boost her prize-money for future

carnivals. “It builds a good base for the spring and

it also allows them to get a bit more prize-money

so in the springtime she is already qualified for

a lot of races,” Newnham said. “She ran third

the other day in a Listed race and she’s still got

improvement to come.” Mrs Maisel is set to run

in the Darley 2YO Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill,

although Newnham will have a more in-depth

look at the race before making a final decision on

    a start.

Lord Mayor an ‘omen’ in CupThe Lord Mayor (Rock ‘n’ Pop) will be the omen

bet for the Lord Mayors Cup (Listed, 2000m) at

Rosehill on Saturday after Chris Waller decided

against a trip to Brisbane where he was also

entered. A Flemington winner over the distance

in January, The Lord Mayor is expected to be

nearing his peak after two runs from a spell. “He

is obviously drawn wide but on a heavy track, I’m

hoping it’s not too much of a disadvantage,” Waller

said. “He’s got a good rider aboard in Tommy

Berry, who will be looking to get him some cover

and give him a chance to finish off strongly and

third up from a spell we expect him to improve.”

Victoria Star to climb through ranks in winterVictoria Star (Tavistock) has reignited his racing

career in Australia this season and Greg Eurell

believes the well-travelled gelding can continue to

step up in Melbourne this winter. The six-year-old

runs in tomorrow’s Vale Kevin O’Brien Handicap

(1400m) at Caulfield with the winner to be exempt

from ballot in the Winter Championship Series

Final (Listed, 1600m) at Flemington in early July.

Victoria Star began his career in New Zealand

where he won twice racing under the name

Rocstock before a sale to Hong Kong. Unplaced in

two runs in Hong Kong, Victoria Star later found

his way to Eurell’s team and has won three of his

four starts for his new trainer this season. “I just

think he probably didn’t like the environment

over there (in Hong Kong) and he just never fired,”

Eurell said. He hasn’t missed a beat at home. He’s

certainly ready to go again so it would have been

very disappointing had we not been able to get a

    start on Saturday.”

about ourselves. We trialed 14 there yesterday

    (Wednesday) at Launceston,” Trinder told

Racing.com. “The trials went really well (and)

it was good to be back in a public arena from

a mental perspective. We’re starting to get a bit

of optimism and light at the end of the tunnel.

I tipped a lot of horses out when it (the restart

date) went from May 15 to June 14. We will have

enough (racing) to be competitive, but not as

much as we had initially hoped to."

Racing Victoria reveals spring optionsThe Melbourne Racing Club has told RV it wants

to transfer the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) from

its traditional mid-October date to the end

of November. This would result in a dramatic

overhaul of the spring carnival. Another option

for RV is to leave the program as it currently

stands but this would lead to a clash with AFL

finals series in October. RV chief executive Giles

    Thompson said ongoing discussions would

continue with key stakeholder groups including

race clubs, trainers and owners. He expects

to have some clarity on what the spring may

look like by early June. Thompson said when

coronavirus struck and thoughts swung to what

a spring carnival may look like, everything was

on the table. That included moving the whole

carnival back two, three or even four weeks. But

the Victorian Racing Club remained steadfast

in their decision not to shift the date of the

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) from the first

    Tuesday in November.

Browell: Make spring changes permanentMoonee Valley Racing Club CEO Michael

Browell is in favour of changes made to the

spring racing calendar this year becoming

permanent. "I'm not adverse to considering

these changes long term, there is nothing to

suggest that 150 years ago when they set the

calendar that they got it right, and to now have

the opportunity to go into it and see how we can

evolve," he told Racing.com. "There is merit in

considering what a future carnival might look

like, clearly the AFL finals playing during the

Caulfield carnival is less than ideal, in saying

that the AFL Grand Final could be played in

the future [this year] on the 100th running of

the Ladbrokes Cox Plate. Clearly reworking

elements of the racing calendar has merit. The

challenge here is we have one view that this is

something of a one-year solution or another

is that it's a trial run of what it looks like in

the future, it just depends what lens you view

    through."

Forsman to make do with Melbourne scheduleNew Zealand trainer Andrew Forsman, who

trains in partnership with Murray Baker said

the Caulfield Cup scheduled in its usual time

slot is a target race for well-performed stayer

The Chosen One (Savabeel), who is also being

aimed at the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)

which looks set to remain on the first Tuesday in

November. “It would have been one of the key

races we’d look to run him in,” Forsman said.

Should the proposed rescheduling take place,

Forsman believed it would still be viable to

contest the famed Cups double in inverse order

and said dropping back 800 metres in distance

would not be impossible. “It is probably not

that difficult to be honest, once they’re up

and at peak fitness,” he said. “The difference

between having a horse ready for 2400 metres

or two miles is not a hell of a lot. I don’t view it

as too much of a drama.”

July target for crowd returns in VictoriaRacing Victoria is working towards allowing

racehorse owners and some race club members

to be back on course in July. RV chief executive

Giles Thompson said June 22 was a key date

as the Victorian state government announces

any changes on further relaxing Covid-19

restrictions. "Our aim is to get people back to

courses as soon as we can," Thompson told RSN

    927. "July is a possibility, there's no doubt about

that. The core part of that whole process is we've

got to where we are today because of the strict

protocols we have around the racing operation

on the track. Anything we do from a crowd

perspective has to protect that. We cannot put

at risk those protocols, so it's really important

to work with the clubs as we get people coming

back to the course who are not necessarily

essential to racing day in and day out that there

    is separation between those groups."

Walker missing being able to ride trackworkWith jockeys who are part of Racing Victoria's green

and gold teams banned from riding trackwork,

Michael Walker said he is missing the early

mornings and hasn’t been able to secure as many

race riding opportunities. "I just love riding," he

told Racing.com. "It's my job and what I love to do

whether it's a race or at trackwork so it's been hard.

I am just trying to stay positive and really focus on

my riding and keep it going and get it to the level I

want it to be at. I'm happy with the way I am riding.

Obviously, I've had limited opportunities and not

being able to ride work has made it harder. It's the

way the cookie crumbles sometimes but all I can do

is to stay healthy and keep my body in top shape.

Focus is one of the main things. Mentally, if you take

the eye off the ball, you can go backwards so I'm just

keeping my eye on the job."

TRSA hails strong Adelaide resultsAmid difficult circumstances, Thoroughbred

Racing South Australia have lauded the Adelaide

carnival on and off the track with “strong”

revenue and turnover up more than 80 per

cent. "In terms of turnover, obviously it's a bit of

a two-speed economy at the moment with the

TABs with massive retail exposure being closed,"

TRSA boss Nick Redin told Racing.com. "Overall

across all operators, turnover was up over 80 per

cent. No surprise the online bookmakers are up

significantly more than that. Pleasingly for us, in

the face of it, the interstate TABs are actually up

and when you consider that half of their business

is retail and that's closed … that's an outstanding

effort. I'm not at liberty to say what revenue is but,

I think it has been, generally, very, very strong

across those three weekends in May. Pleasingly,

the other meetings around the three Group 1

meetings has been strong as well."

Rogerson counts down to racing’s return Trainer Graham Rogerson, who operates

in partnership with his wife Debbie and his

granddaughter Bailey, is expecting to have

between 30 and 40 runners at the first northern

race meeting at Te Rapa on July 4. “Obviously

the lockdown is something you’d rather not

have to do, but we’ve come through it all right,”

Rogerson said. “We’re fortunate to have our own

private place, it’s a great facility, and it makes it

easy for us to keep our horses ticking over. So

we’ve got a lot of horses who will be ready to go.

We’ll probably have 40 trialling at Te Rapa on

June 9, then another group at Ellerslie a week

later. Once we get to the first race meeting at Te

    Rapa, I think we’ll have 30 or 40 runners. I’ve

been over to look at the Te Rapa track, and it’s

the best I’ve seen it look in a long time.”

NZTR hoping for legislative change before electionNew Zealand Thoroughbred Racing chief

executive Bernard Saundry has advised the

industry is a matter of weeks away from hearing

back from the Select Committee following

submissions on the Racing Industry Bill. This Bill

    finalises the post-transition governance structure

of the racing industry, creates a legislative

framework to enable property to better benefit

the racing industry, and enables new ways of

seeking approval for betting products. “With the

racing industry bill, we are very supportive of the

process the Racing Minister has implemented to

have two sets of reform delivered and some new

legislation in 15 months,” Saundry said. “The

advice we have got is that the Select Committee

will report back by June 8 and hopefully we can

have some new legislation in place on the second

    reform bill before the election.”

    The Osarus Breeze-Up Sale broke

    new ground on Wednesday by

    staging what was essentially

    Europe’s first bloodstock online

auction, with each of the 63 lots offered

    sequentially in absentia.

The sale, originally due to be held in a

physical format at La Teste on April 8 and 9,

was forced to reschedule due to coronavirus

restrictions. To provide vendors with an outlet

to sell their breezer, Osarus held the sale online

    with Managing Director Emmanuel Vivaud

auctioning each lot via live stream.

    The two-year-olds were breezed over

various locations in France and Ireland.

Videos of the breeze along with conformation

    photos/videos and veterinary information were

    uploaded to the Osarus site.

Despite the difficult circumstances, the sale

aggregated €589,500 for 38 lots sold, resulting

in a 58 per cent clearance rate. The average

was €15,500, down around €7,000 on last year’s

figure. The median was €9,000 and private sales

    are still ongoing.

Top lot honours went to a son of Intello

(Galileo) offered from the stable of Yann Creff,

who sold to MAB Agency for €58,000. The colt

is out of the multiple stakes-placed Galaxie des

Sables (Marchand de Sable), herself a proven

    stakes producer through the Listed-placed

Galaxe (High Chaparral). MAB Agency, the

leading purchaser of the sales, signed for four

lots at a total of €110,500.

    Leading trainer Jean-Claude Rouget went

to €50,000 to acquire Antolya, a filly from

the second crop of Prince Gibraltar (Rock

Of Gibraltar), who Rouget trained to win the

Grosser Preis von Baden (Gr 1, 2400m) and

    Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2000m). The

chestnut is a half-sister to Poule d’Essai des

    Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) bound My Love’s

    Passion (Elvstroem), who finished runner-

up to A’Ali (Society Rock) in last year’s Prix

Robert Papin (Gr 2, 1100m) and placed behind

Wooded (Wootten Bassett) in the Prix Texanita

(Gr 3, 1200m) earlier this month.

Antolya was offered by the Prevost Baratte

stable, who uploaded a wealth of information

on each of their lots to the Osarus site,

including height, weight, X-rays & scope

reports, alongside photos and videos. The

    Phillip Prevost-Baratte consignment also

achieved €43,000 for a daughter of Elusive

City (Elusive Quality) from the Juddmonte

family which includes Beat Hollow (Sadler’s

Wells), Oasis Dream (Green Desert) and

    Kingman (Invincible Spirit).

The two highest priced lots at the fall of the

hammer - a colt by Le Havre (Noverre) out of

    the aforementioned Galaxe (High Chaparral),

and a Helmet (Exceed And Excel) half-sister to

three stakes winners, were unsold at €71,000

    and €59,000 respectively.

Kings Shield (Scat Daddy) put his

rivals to the sword with a routing

run to victory in the Class 2 Egret

Handicap (1650m) on the Sha Tin

    dirt on Wednesday.

    The former British-trained import has

given his handler Frankie Lor a puzzle to crack,

though. The 90-rated galloper will climb high

in the handicap for his latest success, and with

high quality dirt-track races being scarce in

Hong Kong, Lor may have to look overseas for

a suitable option at a time when international

    travel is uncertain.

“We might run him one more time this

season and then there are no more options,” Lor

said. “I’ll have to talk to the owner but maybe

(South) Korea is a possibility for the dirt race

there (the Korea Cup), and then we might look

ahead to Dubai next year if he shows us that he’s

good enough. But with the coronavirus, we just

don't know yet if we can go anywhere or not.”

Lor saddled his first overseas runner in last

year’s Korea Cup (Listed, 1800m) with Glorious

Artist (Zoffany), fourth in Seoul but down the

field against his stablemate this time.

Kings Shield fared admirably in the Poule

d’Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m) and St

James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) in Europe as a

three-year-old but has found his groove on the

Sha Tin dirt track since arriving in Hong Kong –

this win was the US-bred gelding’s second from

    four attempts on the surface.

“We raced him on the turf but he’s just so-

so, he can be close but he’s not good enough.

On the dirt, he’s a different horse,” Lor said. “He

likes to be up there – if he can lead that’s good

but if not he can sit second and that’s good as

well. He’s just different on the dirt. We’ll have to

see what the handicapper does now.”

The five-year-old was fast to stride, setting

the tempo ahead of Buddies (So You Think),

and when jockey Zac Purton asked the 1.8

favourite to stretch down the home straight,

he didn’t disappoint. Kings Shield galloped

through the line two and a half lengths clear of

Buddies in a Class 2 record time of 1:36.75.

“It was a small field and he had no pressure

on him; he got there very easily and it was there

for him to put up a performance like that but

they’ve still got to do it. He did it well – it was a

    nice effort,” Purton said.

Three puts Purton aheadPurton will start Sunday’s 11-race Sha Tin

card with a precious three-win lead in the title

    race after snaring a treble.

He made the ideal start to the exclusively

all-weather)track fixture as he sought to gain

the upper hand on his jockeys’ championship

rival Joao Moreira, who sat out the meeting due

    to suspension.

The Australian was level with the Brazilian

on 123 wins at the outset and got the early break

he was looking for when Coolceleb (Foxwedge)

rocketed from gate six in the opener, section

three of the Class 4 Shearwater Handicap

    (1200m).

    The Benno Yung-trained four-year-old

enjoyed an uncontested lead and powered

down the home straight for a three and three

    quarter-length success.

The reigning champion made it treble

with a well-judged, galvanising drive aboard

Enfolding (Fastnet Rock) to overhaul Touch Of

Luck (Hard Spun) in the final stride of the last

race, the Class 3 Peacock Handicap (1650m).

The Yung stable bagged a double thanks

to Striking Mr C (Super Easy) in section two

of the Shearwater Handicap. Derek Leung

was strong in the drive to ensure a short-head

success over the Jack Wong-ridden Gunnar

    (Hinchinbrook).

Cruz up for a championship challenge

Tony Cruz has his eyes fixed on long-time

trainers’ premiership leader Ricky Yiu following

a treble that took him to 51 wins for the term,

just six off the top spot.

“I think I’d better give it a go!” Cruz said

    with a chuckle.

The two-time champion had not had a

single win on the dirt track this term but after

Beauty Loyal (Darci Brahma) broke that cold

snap in section one of the Class 3 Flamingo

    Handicap (1200m), Party Everyday (Snitzel)

made it a quick-fire brace in the next, the

Class 4 Spoonbill Handicap (1650m), and

    California Concord (Fastnet Rock) turned

that into a hat-trick in section two of the

    Flamingo Handicap.

Karis Teetan was in the plate for all three

strikes as he took his season’s tally to 72, with

19 of those having been achieved aboard Cruz-

    trained gallopers.

“It’s nice to get a treble for Tony and he

hadn't had a win on the dirt track this season,

so it’s nice to break that for him. He and his

owners have given me good support and I’m

    grateful for that,” Teetan said.

After Beauty Loyal’s neck score at 9/1, the

Hong Kong International Sale graduate Party

Everyday broke his maiden, at the 12th attempt,

as the 3.6 second pick in the market.

“Last time he was pulling and hanging out –

we know his problem and the race just needs to

happen for him,” Teetan said. “Today, with the

perfect draw (2), he just had that sit behind the

cover and he switched off nicely. He waited a

little and when he moved up he didn't give up, it

was a nice win. I just hope he gets rid of his bad

    habits and he’ll be okay.”

California Concord earned a first win at his

second start in Hong Kong, having won two

    from nine in Australia.

“I trialled him when he was up in Conghua

and he really gave me a good feel. It’s all about

quality with him, he’s got some potential, he

was professional out of the gate and he focused

nicely but he’s a next season horse,” Teetan said.

    Hidden Spirit (Alamosa), meanwhile,

is surely the season’s Class 5 king. The Paul

    O’Sullivan-trained five-year-old nailed his

fourth win in the grade this term – all on the

dirt – and third on the bounce with Neil Callan

in the plate. The Irishman urged the Kiwi

import to run down Curling Luxury (O’Reilly)

for a three quarter-length score in the Swan

    Handicap (1800m).

Vincent Ho registered his first win for the

month at Happy Valley just last Wednesday

and he doubled his May tally in section one of

the Class 4 Shearwater Handicap (1200m). The

Francis Lui-trained Thou Shall Sing (Your Song)

rattled home to edge Pearl Champion (Rip Van

    Winkle) by a neck.

The Tait family’s red colours with a

    white cap have graced racetracks

    right across Australia for almost

a century and have been carried

by some of the greats of the turf, from the

precocious Baguette (Rego) through to the

    remarkable Tie The Knot (Nassipour).

It is the Tie The Knot family that this week

produced another horse to follow in the form

of Cherry Tortoni (Night Of Thunder), a maiden

    winner at Sale on Wednesday.

By 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Night

Of Thunder (Dubawi) out of Tortoni (Strategic),

the youngest half-sister to Tie The Knot, Cherry

Tortoni looks set to continue in his family’s

footsteps if his impressive win is anything to go by.

Settling midfield under Billy Egan, Cherry

Tortoni came widest of all upon straightening

and showed tremendous race sense, rushing

up quickly and never looking in too much

doubt. At the line, he had a length and a half

to spare over Not A Zak (El Roca) with Miss

Conduct (Dissident) a length away in third.

Cherry Tortoni was among the first horses

reared at Twin Hills Stud after Olly and Amber

Tait purchased the historic farm, formerly

owned by Mike Willesee and then the Ingham

    brothers, from Godolphin in 2017.

Bred and raced by Sandy Tait, in

conjunction with his sister Jill Nivison, Cherry

Tortoni is the third foal to race and the second

winner for Tortoni, who was a winner at Wagga

    from four starts in 2013.

Tortoni’s dam Whisked (Whiskey Road) won

the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), the Light

Fingers Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and the Tea Rose

Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) during the 1990-91 season.

She was retired to stud in 1992, producing 13-time

Group 1 winner Tie The Knot as her second foal.

She also produced Listed winners Dream Ballad

(Singspiel) and Hood (Shamardal), with Tortoni

her last foal; Whisked died nine days after giving

    birth to Tortoni.

It is perhaps even more fitting that Patrick

Payne is Cherry Tortoni’s trainer, given that

Payne carried the red and white aboard Tie

The Knot to victories in the Chipping Norton

Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) twice, the Ranvet Stakes

(Gr 1, 2000m) and the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2,

    1200m).

For Night Of Thunder, it was his eighth

individual winner in the southern hemisphere

this season from just 12 runners, taking him

into second on the First Season Sires table, both

on earnings - behind Pride Of Dubai (Street

Cry) - and by winners, behind Spill The Beans

    (Redoute’s Choice).

Night Of Thunder only served one season

at Darley’s Kelvinside property in the Hunter

Valley, producing 58 live foals, but the racetrack

performances of that one crop suggest that he

would be popular should he ever return down

    under.
