A. ABOUT AL-ZUHRI

Introduction

Tertiary level Islamic education plays an important role in determining the overall philosophy, objective and methodology of the Islamic education system. The Islamic education offered at this level must therefore incorporate a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive approach. Al-Zuhri Name

Institut Pengajian Tinggi Al-Zuhri (Al-Zuhri Institute) was founded in 2000. The name al-Zuhri is in honour of a highly respected Muslim scholar and local religious figure, Kiayi Ahmad Zuhri Mutammim. He was a recipient of the Tokoh Ilmuan MUIS1 award, a member of MUIS’s Fatwa Council and one of the founders of PERGAS.

1 MUIS is the acronym for Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura or Islamic Religious Council of Singapore. MUIS is a statutory board and one of its primary roles is to advise the president of Singapore on Islamic matters.

WD6 ENGLISH LANGUAGE

WD 616 & WD 626 (English Language Module I & II)

Synopsis: This module would enable learners to understand and use English in order to expand their worldview; understand better the world in which they live in by fostering critical awareness of continuity and change in the human experience; to target the fullest possible development of capabilities in the receptive (listening and reading) and expressive (speaking and writing) modes and to nurture the learner’s spiritual, intellectual, social, moral and emotional development through the use of English. The syllabus is presented under four headings viz. Oral Communication, Reading, Written Communication and Language Study. However, in practice, the sections are to be taught in an integrated manner whenever possible.

• ORAL COMMUNICATION

- Oral Communication is an integral part of living. The students must know how to communicate fluently, appropriately and effectively in internationally acceptable English. They need to understand how language conventions can vary according to purpose, audience, context and culture and apply this knowledge in speech in both formal and informal situations.

• READING

- The first revelation to our beloved Prophet (pbuh) was “Iqra” – “Read”. Students should develop competency both in fluent reading as well as in extracting meaning from and responding sensitively to the written word.

• WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

- Writing helps the students to order, consolidate and crystallize the multitude of impressions, which are experienced while listening, talking, reading, observing and feeling. Students can be assisted through their writing to move outward to extend their knowledge of their world and of other human beings and inwards into a deeper understanding of themselves.

- The important principle of accountability in Islam must be emphasized as integral to written communication. As the written word has a degree of permanence, writers have to be sensitized to the concepts of audience, purpose and context with particular reference to the tone and content of their writing.

Page 34: Diploma in Islamic Studies Prospectus - AL-ZUHRI DPI.pdfoffering Islamic studies with the aim of ... (UPSI), Selangor International Islamic University College (KUIS) and Insaniah University

- 34 -

- Written communication needs to be taught. The continuum of expressive (language closest to speech) transactional (writing dealing with facts, theories, information or persuasion) and poetic (creative writing – verse, poems, compositions, stories) provides a framework for the range of writing to be taught.

- A systematic approach based on the “Mentor” model, that is, the use of examples of good writing is recommended. Extracted from these examples will be skills and techniques of effective writing and this need to be taught in a progressive, incremental fashion.

• LANGUAGE STUDY
