Diploma in Grade R TeachingThe Diploma in Grade R Teaching has beendeveloped to meet specific national needs toprovide prospective, as well as existing Gr Rteachers, to equip themselves with specificknowledge and appropriate skills; i.e.1. Specialisation in Home Language

teaching, together with English as FirstAdditional language teaching. Allstudents must study a Second AdditionalLanguage to meet the languagerequirements relating to conversationalcompetence.

2. An ability to identify barriers to learningin early childhood and developappropriate teaching and learningprogrammes to meet the needs of theidentified students.

3. Develop the skill to adapt to multiplebackgrounds and learning needs.

4. Supervised and assessed teachingpractice.

5. Professional development as a teacher toteach Grade R children effectively.

6. Teaching practice (Workplace integratedlearning). WIL is a part ofcompulsorythe programme where students spendfour consecutive weeks of supervisedteaching practice at schools during theirsecond, third and forth study years.

During the twelve weeks’ school-basedteaching practice (WIL), the students willengage in teaching within theprofessional school environment underthe supervision of experienced teachersas mentors and be formally assessed bysuitably-qualified staff members ofEdutel Higher Education.

The qualification is offered at NQF 6 andcarries 360 credits.

DurationMinimum of four years.

When can I register?There are two study cycles per academicyear.Study Cycle 1Register between 1 March and 30 SeptemberExamination in May/JuneNote: Students who are not computer literatewill only be allowed to register until 31 August2019 for this intake. Should you not becomputer literate and you register after 31August 2019, you will be able to attend StudyCycle 2. Computer literate students mayregister until 30 September 2019Study Cycle 2Register between 1 October and 28 February.Examination in November (year afterregistration) and May the year after.

Computer literacy workshopStudents who are not computer literate allhave to attend a 2-day computer literacyworkshop from 28-29 September 2019.

How do you study at Edutel Higher Education?The Diploma in Grade R Teaching is a part-timemodular qualification that makes use of ablended mode of learning. This means thatstudents will register for a qualification as adistance student and will work at home on thelearning material provided, but have at theirdisposal several ways in which to supplementtheir studies. Edutel will provide studentsupport through the following distributionchannels during the teaching and learningprocess; postal services, e-mail, Online Zoomsession, Moodle learning platform, SMS’s,WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, telephone, faxand DVD’s.

Admission requirementsNational Senior Certificate (NSC) whichgrants access to Diploma studies.ORNational Certificate (Vocational) NC (V) atNQF Level 4 which grants access to Diplomastudies.ORA Level 4 or level 5 Certificate in EarlyChildhood DevelopmentORA foreign qualification that is equivalent tothe NSC as determined by SAQAORA Further Education and Training Certificate(FETC) at NQF Level 4.

Students who have completed their SeniorCertificate prior to 2008 must have obtainedat least four subjects on level D or higher.

Learning assumed to be in placeIt is assumed that the student is competent inthe Home Language of choice and English atSenior Certificate Level. The following homelanguages are offered: IsiZulu, IsiXhosa,Setswana, Sepedi, English or Afrikaans.

Basic computer literacy will enable studentsto access the student support actionsavailable.

What if I have certain knowledge andexperience already?

Edutel Higher Education is a strong supporterof Recognition of Prior Learning. For thisreason, students may apply for RPL.

What is RPL?RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)In line with the South African QualificationsAuthority institutional guidelines and policies,Recognition of Prior Learning may take placeand the candidate may be awarded amaximum of 50% of the credits for theprogramme, based on appropriate assessmentof evidence of competence related to theprogramme and module outcomes.

RPL, as defined nationally by SAQA, applies toinformal or non-formal learning only.Learning resulting from formal routes willnormally be recognised via CreditAccumulation and Transfer (CAT), but in caseswhere CAT is found not to be applicable, theRPL route may be explored. Edutel HigherEducation in all its RPL and CAT processesensures that the following principles asformulated by the CHE, always underpin itsassessment policies and practices.

� A formal RPL will be followed in line withEdutel Higher Education’s RPL policy.

� RPL will be used to grant access to, orexemption from modules that contributetowards the Diploma Grade R.

� Edutel Higher Education recognises formsof prior learning as equivalent to theprescribed formal minimum admissionrequirements.

� Edutel Higher Education may recogniseother forms of prior learning for grantingadvanced standing through exemptionfrom modules or courses at lower levels ofthe Diploma Grade R qualification, forexample work integrated learning

experience.� RPL processes are designed to grant access,

and RPL application is evaluated against theentry requirements of the qualification inquestion.

� Credit transfer means carrying over creditseither horizontally at the same level of study,or vertically from a lower to a higher level ofstudy.

� Any or all credits for an incompletequalification will be recognised by EdutelHigher Education as meeting part of therequirements for the Diploma Grade R.

PLEASE NOTE:ALL modules are compulsory EXCEPT for the Home Language modules and the SecondAdditional Language modules. Where students choose their Home Language first, English willbe taught as First Additional Language and the choice of the Second Additional Language(LoCC) is determined by the Home Language choice. If Afrikaans is the Home Language, thenone of the other listed African languages must be studied as the Second Additional Language(LoCC). Work-Integrated Learning (WIL)You are required to select a school in the areayou live where Grade R is being taught. Theschool must have an appointed HOD forECD/Foundation Phase and an EMIS number.This will be the suggested school where youwill complete your WIL. Apart from selectinga qualifying school, the school must alsomake a mentor teacher available to mentorand assess you during WIL.

Should you register between 1 Septemberand 28 February, you will be required to doyour WIL either in July, August, September orOctober. Should you register between1 March and 31 August, you will be requiredto do your WIL in February, March or May.

Note: All students must start with the fourweeks of teaching practice (WIL) in thesecond semester of their SECOND studyyear.

Edutel Higher Education reserves the right toapprove or not to approve of the selectedschool. Should Edutel Higher Education notapprove of the school, the student will berequired to select another school and havethe appendices completed again andsubmitted to Edutel Higher Education.

Rules of combinationThe programme is designed and structuredin such a way that it forms an integratedwhole despite that it is made up of differentmodules. Provision is made for logicalprogression from one module to the nextand the interrelatedness of the differentmodules is emphasised continuously bycross referencing to other modules as theprogramme unfolds. The interrelatedness ofthe specialisation modules, fundamentalmodules and the work-integrated modules(Teaching Practice) is emphasised in allmodules.� A prerequisite for enrolling for second-

year modules in the elected HomeLanguage, English First AdditionalLanguage and elected Second AdditionalLanguage modules is the successfulcompletion of the first-year modules.

� A prerequisite for enrolling for thethird-year modules in the elected HomeLanguage, English First AdditionalLanguage and elected Second AdditionalLanguage modules is the successfulcompletion of the first- and second-yearmodules.

� A prerequisite for enrolling for theTeaching and Mathematics module inthe third year is the successfulcompletion of the MathematicsTeaching and Learning module in thesecond year.

� Complying with the requirementsfor Work Integrated Learning (WIL)modules during all three years ofstudy is a requirement to completethe qualification.

Academic supportEdutel Higher Education will providestudent support through the followingdistribution channels during the teachingand learning process:� Postal services� e-mail� Moodle learning platform� Online Zoom meetings� SMS’s� WhatsApp� Facebook� Twitter� Telephone� Fax� Supporting DVD’s.

Contact sessionsAt the onset of the programme, a one-dayorientation contact session will beorganised at centres accessible to thestudent. During this contact session, atraining session introducing students toMoodle and Zoom meetings will beconducted. All administrative matters, suchas submitting assignments, registering andwriting examinations, will be explainedduring this contact session.

In addition to the one-day orientationcontact session, two-day contact sessionswill be held once a semester, at which themodule content will be facilitated, andstudents can obtain clarification andassistance with study queries. Thus, eachstudent receives twelve hours of contacttraining per semester. Contact sessions willbe organised in centres which are accessibleto students. Contact session venues aredetermined by the number of students ineach area. Each contact session isfacilitated by an experienced person with

the necessary academic qualifications andfacilitation skills. The details of the contactsessions are provided in the AdministrativeBooklet. For the language modules, pending thenumber of students registering for the contactsession, the contact session might be conductedvia online Zoom sessions.

Media Centre ServicesThe media centre covers a wide variety ofresources for your use.� Access to additional reading material, such as

reference books and journals which are relevantto student's studies.

� Lists of recommended books which areavailable at other institutions.

� A list of internet websites that are relevant tostudents' studies and which can be accessed viathe web.

� Access to the services of EBSCOhost (electroniclibrary).

� Printing and copying services at a cost.� Internet access.� Downloaded online Zoom meetings for use

after the presentation date.� The services of a person to assist in the search

for information.

DisabilityEdutel Higher Education seeks to addressany unfair discrimination on the basis ofdisability and thereby provides access tothese students who wish to further theirstudies.

Health and WellnessEdutel Higher Eduation takes the healthand wellness of its staff and studentsseriously and therefore has a well-developedpolicy in place, managed by aHealth and Wellness Committee.

Formative assessmentA range of formal, non-formal and informalformative assessment procedures are usedto focus teaching and learning to improvestudent success.� All learning guides are written in an

interactive writing style. Every theme, orsub-theme includes self-assessmentformative activities. The format of theseactivities provides a variety of questions(activities) to allow the students to self-assess whether they know andunderstand the content and develop theability to practically apply their newknowledge.

� During the contact sessions, a variety ofquestions assessing the students’knowledge and practical applicationskills will be included in the programmes.

� A variety of short questions will beavailable on Moodle as self-tests.Students will be able to complete shorttests, as many times as they want to, inthe form of quizzes. Each self-test willbe electronically scored. After a fewattempts, the correct answers for eachquestion will be displayed.

� One formal assignment, contained in thetutorial letter of each module, must becompleted and submitted electronicallyto Edutel Higher Education. Assignments

Cancellation PolicyCancellations of course fees will not beaccepted once you are accepted andregistered as a student. Consideration willonly be given to exceptional cases. You maycancel your studies, but you will remainliable to pay your course fees.

Students can arrange to pay their coursefees by bank debit order, cash monthly, cashin advance, credit card, in some cases, bysalary stop order (Fundi). Students canapply for study loans at various financialinstitutions.

The price for this qualification is on theapplication form.

� In each module, final marks carry thefollowing weights:� Assignment - contributes 30% of the

final mark.� Examination - contributes 70% if the

final mark.� Tutorial letter 2 provides comprehensive

Summative assessmentAll modules will be assessed through aformal examination in each module at theend of each semester.

Examinations in each of the modulescontribute 70% towards the promotionmark in each module.The final promotion mark will be calculatedby the separate marks obtained at the endof each semester.Students must achieve a sub-minimum of40% in an examination to pass a module.The overall mark for each module is 50%.To be awarded the qualification, studentsmust obtain 50% in each module.

Conduct towards co- and facilitatorsstudentsStudents studentare expected to respect the dignity of their co- s and facilitators. Theirbehaviour towards other and facilitators should always be civilised, courteous andstudentssupportive. Foul language, disrespect and a discriminatory attitude towards any other studentor facilitator will not be tolerated and will be dealt with in the strictest possible manner.

Dress codeStudents are expected to ensure that their personal appearance and dress code conform toacceptable norms, are not offensive and do not detract from the professional image that isprojected by Edutel, co- and employer organisations.students

Employer relationsStudents Workplace Integrated Learningshould recognise that when attending , that suchattendance is treated under the same employment terms and conditions of work as applied byemployers.

Workplace learning and assessmentsStudents are expected to apply themselves as diligent, motivated and productive employeeswhile performing their duties . They should understand that the workplaces areduring WILextensions of the instructional learning components and that they must utilise everyopportunity at the workplace to apply their learning and, in so doing, develop their knowledge,skills and experience. should actively and positively participate in all assessments andStudentsensure that all assessments are conducted in a fair and just manner.

Assessments and proof of competenceStudents are expected to provide proof of competence through recognised assessment andmoderation procedures and instruments. It is expected of to fully participate in thesestudentsactivities and to ensure that all evidence submitted as proof of their competence is a true andaccurate reflection of their own ability and skills, and that no part of any evidence can beclaimed to present the efforts of another person in whatever capacity or association with thestudent. Students are expected to demonstrate extreme honesty and integrity in these matters.

Use of facilitiesStudents are expected to use all physical facilities, including furniture and equipment, withutmost care and respect and to refrain from any wilful acts of vandalism, abuse or negligence.

Appeals procedureStudents who are not satisfied with the manner in which their learning efforts have beenassessed are required to utilise Edutel's appeals procedure and to refrain from trying to resolvesuch matters in other ways.

CommunicationStudents ,are encouraged to communicate with Edutel and its employees using recognisedchannels of communication established for such purposes. These channels include personalcontact, written (fascimile, letter or e-mail) or telephonic communication. areStudentsexpected to resolve any issues with Edutel directly and not to use intermediaries to addresssuch matters.

GRIEVANCE POLICY FOR EDUTEL

PurposeThe purpose of this policy is to formulate the values and philosophy of Edutel when dealingwith grievances of its students.

ObjectivesThe objectives of this policy is to:� establish a fair process for to air their grievances;students� provide a mechanism for dealing with grievances in order to protectstudent student

morale and motivation;� maintain sound and effective working relationships in the organisation.

ScopeThis policy is applicable to all categories of attending training interventions offered bystudentsEdutel.

Policy statementsAll may lodge grievances without any fear of victimisation or prejudice.studentsAll grievances are to be handled with the utmost discretion and with the dignity and privacy ofstudents in mind.Grievances shall be settled as speedily and effectively as possible.This policy deals with individuals' grievances and grievances in small groups.The Human Resources Manager or his/her delegate acts as advisor to both parties in thegrievance investigation.The policy does not replace normal communication between and Edutel and shouldstudentstherefore be utilised in cases where informal communication has been exhausted or is clearlyinappropriate.Students studentshave the right to be assisted by a co- of their choice at any stage of theprocedure.The grievance must be raised within five working days of the occurrence that gave rise to it,failing which, unless special circumstances exist, the will have no recourse to thestudentgrievance procedure.

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE FOR EDUTEL

Phase 1The must orally communicate the grievance directly to the Edutel Project Managerstudentresponsible for the particular learning programme. The must indicate that he/she isstudentlodging a formal grievance.

The Edutel Project Manager must:� listen in private to the problem;student’s� encourage the to speak openly about his/her grievances;student� give the the assurance that he/she will not be victimised;student� ask relevant questions to obtain all facts relating to the grievance;� respect the need for confidentiality;� endeavour to resolve the problem as soon as possible and furnish the with anstudent

answer within three working days from the date that the grievance was raised.

Phase 2If a is not satisfied with the result of the above:studentAn official grievance form must be completed and handed to the Edutel Project Manager. Thismust take place within three working days of the Edutel Project Manager informing thestudent Pof the outcome of hase 1.

Upon receipt of the grievance form, the Edutel Project Manager, after consultation with thestudent, studentmust communicate the outcome to the in writing within three working daysfor the purpose of solving the grievance.If the grievance is not settled to his/her satisfaction, the parties will proceed to thestudent’snext phase.

Phase 3The grievance form is handed to Edutel's Human Resource Manager who, within three days ofreceiving the form, arranges a grievance investigation, which will involve the following people:� The student� Witnesses (if any)� Edutel Project Manager� Human Resource Manager.

During the investigation an effort must be made to settle the grievance and Edutel's HumanResource Manager must comment in writing regarding his/her finding within three workingdays of the grievance investigation having been completed.

If the is not satisfied with the findings of the grievance investigation, the partiesstudentproceed to Phase 4.
