DIPL HANDY HINT!

1. In owe the word simply sounds like [ow]; and own has the letter ‘n’ added.

2. close (near) uses the sound [s] at the end; close (shut) has the sound [z] at the end.

3. whole and hole are pronounced the same, as the ‘w’ in whole is silent, but they have different meanings.

Similes • A simile is a group of words that tells us that

one thing is very similar to another thing … that one thing is very much like the other thing. e.g. as white as snow = something is very white, as quiet as a mouse = something doesn’t make a noise.

Long vowel [ō] sounds:-

on the end of toe, doe, Joe , hoe,

in the middle

of words e.g. float

OR at the start

when you hear the

word ‘old’ in a

1.on the end of words e.g. blow OR when followed by [n] or [l] e.g. thrown, bowl 2. at the end of a word with 2 syllables e.g. burrow

Pronouns • A pronoun is the word we can use instead of a

noun. Pronouns identify subject, receiver or ownership.
