In the new novel Cafe Cyprus the protagonistHasan tops what has already been attested tohim by critics: »Dynamic, freaky, colourful!«(Brigitte, Hamburg)
In Selam Berlin, Hasan Kazan witnessed the fallof the wall. In Cafe Cyprus he tries to gain afoothold in London and is fascinated by themixture of different nationalities characterisingthe city.Khan and Betty, Kazim and Sukjeet, Ali andAyse are the friends with whom Hasan – apresent-day nomad – socialises in the Londonof the early nineties. In Green Lanes, NorthLondon, he works in ›Ali’s Supermarket‹. In›Cafe Cyprus‹, he waits on old Cypriots whostill engage in embittered discussions on the so-lution of the Cyprus conflict. He also sells Ke-babs with Kazim and clothes with Khan andBetty at Portobello Market, falls in love withHannah, takes his mom, on a visit from Istan-bul, and cousin Leyla to the city’s tourist high-lights, philosophises about Englishness, andcompares his experiences with Berlin and Istan-bul, the cities in which he grew up. No doubt –everything is one notch hotter and tougher inLondon.

Mama’s baby – papa’s maybe? Cuckoo’s Childis a story about three paternity tests, a preg-nancy test, a baby in a laundry basket, a fewdead persons and unconventional family blissin a nest which, though entirely unfamiliar, isnonetheless rather cosy.
A little house with a garden, a happy marriageand above all two children, those were my goalsin life, Anja, a teacher in her late thirties thinksto herself. Far from having reached her goals, she is stuck in a ›rat hole‹ as she calls the lodginginto which she fled following her divorce. When her colleague Birgit becomes pregnant,Anja can’t help suspecting the child was con-ceived by her own ex-husband. She persuadesBirgit’s husband secretly to undergo a paternitytest. The side effects are potentially dangerous…With an equal portion of humour and insightinto the slings and arrows of nest-building,Cuckoo’s Child depicts family constellationswhich are anything but boring and common. In the process she shows that the road to happi-ness is not always straight and smooth.

»What makes the Brunetti novels so special is their strong reference to the real worldwhich tempts tourists into looking for the Commissario at the scenes of his work. This means that Brunetti has a rival for the reader’s affection, a rival who is treated
with as much tenderness and love as the principal figure himself: the city of Venice.«Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

What happened, where and why? Toni Sepedaon the trail of Commissario Brunetti. A literarytravel guide. Even for armchair travellers. With a preface by Donna Leon.
Why does Commissario Brunetti in Friendsin High Places take a seat in the Torino and not,as is his habit, in the Rosa Salva?Author Toni Sepeda has meticulously retracedBrunetti’s paths through the alleys of Veniceand through the novels and carefully collatedeverything that is set in the vicinity of theQuestura, in San Polo or near the OspedaleCivile etc. Her tried and tested tours – inter-spersed with Donna Leon quotes – offer some-thing like Ariadne’s thread through the tangleof alleys. Brunetti’s Venice allows the reader, either at home or on site, casually to followBrunetti on his strolls through the City ofWater … Roaming about while letting yourthoughts wander, just as Brunetti does: this iswhat the book invites the reader to do.

Urs Widmer / Tatjana HauptmannThe Most Beautiful Tales From Arabian Nights
For all those who have always shied away fromthe sheer length of the original Urs Widmerhas carefully abridged the wonderful tales fromArabian Nights while preserving their orientalflavour. Highly vivid and amusing, he recountsthe six most famous tales of the immortalSheherazade: The Fisherman and the Jinni,Alibaba and the Forty Thieves, Aladdin andthe Magic Lamp, The Magic Horse, TheAdventures of Haroun-al-Raschid, and Sinbadthe Sailor. To ensure that the great collection of fairytalesbecomes »a source of infinite pleasures and therichest picture book in the world« (HermannHesse), Tatjana Hauptmann has collaboratedon the work, the artist to illustrate Orientallavishness and subtlety.
»Tatjana Hauptmann has retained a dreamyplayfulness and a sense of vital naivety.
Both qualities are reflected in her drawingsand account for her success with children
as well as young-at-heart adults.Stern, Hamburg
About Urs Widmer’s adaptation ofShakespeare’s King Plays:
»An excellent read. With their breath-takingpace, Widmer’s prose versions of Shakespeare’s
plays are true masterworks.«Basler Zeitung

Easy to become king, being one the hardestthing. After numerous adventures and practicaltests, this is the insight gained by the childrenRobert, Moritz and Johanna, king Schwarte thepig, Charlie ›Tasso‹ Trunk the mouse and CarloSpannnagel the donkey, Miss Bellmouse the catand Dr Johannes Loy the owl. F. K.Waechterand Bernd Eilert lure the reader into a cheer-fully upside-down yet fundamentally goodworld. This rollicking book for children, parents andother demanding readers which was first pub-lished in 1972 crowns it all: apart from readingit, one can join in the fun with folding, guessing, rhyming, puzzling, painting, singing, and evenmaltreating it with a pair of scissors.
»I later bought a few of Waechter’s children’sbooks and posters for my little brother:The Crown Snatchers, which he wrote
together with Bernd Eilert, for example. With their masterful hatching, the drawings
came across as somewhat conventional at first, but they were completely new and fresh
in their mischievous and anti-authoritarianattitude, their celebration of nonsense and
in that they animated children to participatein the creation of the book, i.e. to drawinto the book, cut things out of it and
to invent their own stories.«Axel Scheffler
This book is a real surprise bag, brimful with jokesand wonder, full of tricks and fantastic deeds.

»One day, the wizard said to Humboldt, thesorcerer’s apprentice: ›Sorcerers and magi-cians from all over the world are invited to acongregation. I must meet them. Guard mycastle and assiduously discharge your duties. While I am gone, I expect you to wipe theglasses until they are crystal-clear, polish thebrass mortar, and there must not be even ahint of a stain anywhere on the floor by thetime I get back. And before I forget: the watertrough must always be full precisely to thebrim. I hope you don’t even think of restinguntil you have done all your work!‹The sorcerer then put on his cloak, mumbleda few incantations and – whiz! – disappearedin a cloud of pale blue powder which immedi-ately settled on all the furniture and floors.›As if I wasn’t busy enough as it is‹, Hum-boldt murmured to himself. ›He keepsdumping more and more work on me andreserves all the pleasure for himself. That’sunfair. While he, the master, rattles off a fewmagic words, I have to slave away like aservant. He has the power and the fun…‹«

»One should always have a notebook handy, both at home and when out and about«,Tomi Ungerer says. Having followed his ownadvice for over thirty years he has, in passing, filled stacks of diaries and notebooks.»Ideas race through my head. I am like acomputer; it is as if someone pressed a button. That even applies to languages: French, Ger-man, English – I switch from one to the other, sometimes I use all three of them in onesentence«, Tomi Ungerer explains.Apart from ideas, sketches and drawings, TomiUngerer’s notebooks reveal his predilectionfor aphorisms, puns, and little stories. Fromthis reservoir, a book has been compiled forthe first time. It shows an unfamiliar part ofTomi Ungerer, although perhaps it is not thatunusual for him after all: »I am a note-taker.I draw what I write down, and I write downwhat I draw in order to express my thoughtsclearly and succinctly«, Tomi Ungerer says.

A Tragic Literary History
Rave reviews following the reissue of Walter Muschg’s A Tragic Literary History:
»One of the most essential books ever written.«Die Welt, Berlin
»Walter Muschg’s book is uncanny and fully deserves to be reprinted.A fascinating text on account of the big questions it raises, it enthrals the reader with
the sheer vigour and decisiveness with which it answers these questions.«Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
»With his Tragic History of Literature Walter Muschg belongs to the authors of classic workswho, in Lessing’s words would have deserved ›to be less elevated and read more‹!
Only two pages long, the afterword by Urs Widmer is a stylistic masterpiece which, basedon critical analysis, pays beautiful, subtle and befitting tribute to the author. It is recommended to all
readers as their next book, irrespective of whether they already know it or pick it up for the first time.«Süddeutsche Zeitung, Munich
»Walter Muschg’s writing is overbearing in its toneand sharp in its judgements but also seductively brilliant.«

An expert in the study of German languageand literature, Walter Muschg was originallytrained as a psychoanalyst, and it was from thisperspective that he gained profound and sur-prisingly modern insights into the subconsciousand mythical nature of literary texts. Theseinsights gave rise to original, often provocativebut invariably convincing, literary interpreta-tions. His collection of essays The Destructionof German Literature caused a sensation in1956, as Muschg was the first critic to draw at-tention to the ›burnt-out poets‹ of expression-ism after 1945.Compiled from this as well as other works byMuschg, the volume contains the critic’s mostimportant essays on ›his‹ authors Brecht,Döblin, Goethe, Hebel, Kafka, Barlach, Keller,Stifter as well as many others.

At long last it is possible to celebrate Christmaswith Loriot: with presents which are sure toplease (for example the game: ›Let’s build ourown nuclear power plant‹), with classic recipessuch as ›Dachshund in a nightgown‹ and ›Papamade of marzipan‹, with Loriot’s legendaryadvent poem and grandpa Hoppenstedt’s time-less verdict: »There used to be more tinsel!«and, last but not least, a number of edifyingNew Year’s resolutions.
A book for all those who can hardly wait forthe next Christmas season, but also for thosewho can hardly wait until the whole festive fussis finally over.

»If there was no Vicco von Bülow, i.e. Loriot –›Oh… yes‹ – he would have to be invented.
You all know him from films, radio andtelevision: ›fa-bu-lous‹. The fact that he has been
refusing to appear in the circus ringin his own very personal way and live
in one way or another, well, who can hold itagainst him? If Diogenes now releases
Loriot’s Collected Prose, 750 pages thick,on a market already overflowing with books,
then you must buy it and moreimportantly read it! ›Ter-ri-fic‹!«
