Standardization in Germany

Organization and principles

Standardization is instrumental in the creation of order in our technical world. It is an inte-

gral part of the existing economic, social and legal structure.

DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V. (DIN, for short), a self-governing institution of

trade and industry, is the body responsible in Germany for the preparation of national stan-

dards. It performs this function on the basis of its statutes and of the principles set out in

DIN 820, and pursuant to the agreement concluded with the German Federal Government

in 1975. As the representative of Germany, it fulfi ls an equivalent function in the European

(CEN/CENELEC) and international (ISO) standards organizations, while in the fi eld of elec-

trical engineering such activities are coordinated through the DKE Deutsche Kommission

Elektrotechnik Elektronik Informationstechnik im DIN und VDE.

The standards work undertaken by DIN is a service that profi ts the whole of the national

economy. This work is defi ned as the systematic standardization of tangible and intangible

objects by the mutual efforts of all interested parties for the benefi t of the entire commu-

nity.

The { symbol

The { symbol is the visible representation of DIN’s work for the benefi t of the community.

Its use is not restricted to DIN members, but all products bearing the { symbol must

comply with the pertinent DIN Standards and meet other justifi ed requirements with regard

to their serviceability. If products bearing the symbol are found not to comply with the pro-

visions laid down for its use, permission to use the mark will be withdrawn.

Membership of DIN

Membership of DIN is open to companies and corporate bodies from any country.

Members of DIN pay an annual subscription fee which is based on the number of salaried

staff and wage-earners (discounting apprentices/trainees) employed in their organization.

The current minimum fee is EUR 744.00 (for all organizations with up to 100 employees).

Members of DIN are granted, among other benefi ts, the following reductions:

– 15 % discount on orders for the DIN-Katalog für technische Regeln,

– 15 % discount on orders for DIN Standards, including translations,

– 15 % discount on subscriptions to DIN-Mitteilungen + elektronorm,

and

– permission to reproduce DIN Standards for in-house purposes against payment of a

small fl at-rate fee.

Information on standards

The results of DIN’s activities in the fi eld of standardization are recorded in DIN Standards.

In special fi elds and areas of responsibility, other German private-sector regulatory bodies

also issue normative documents.

The main annual catalogue published by DIN is the DIN-Katalog für technische Regeln,

edited by the DITR-Datenbank der DIN-Software GmbH. Volume 1 of the DIN Catalogue

represents the single most comprehensive printed source of information on the technical

rules which are valid in Germany; volume 2 contains the corresponding references to inter-

national collections of technical rules. Both volumes are also available on CD-ROM.

The technical rules listed in this catalogue are not only DIN Standards and documents pub-

lished by other regulatory bodies, but also those statutory provisions (laws, regulations,

etc.) that contain technical specifi cations. The titles of the documents are in many cases

given in both German and English.

DIN publishes a monthly journal, the DIN-MITTEILUNGEN + elektronorm which, besides

featuring articles and reports on standards work in Germany and abroad, also includes a

gazette of new publications and other activities in the fi eld of technical rules, the DIN-An-

zeiger für technische Regeln.

Translations of German standards

DIN-Sprachendienst, the language services section of DIN, publishes offi cial English trans-

lations of the most important DIN Standards. These translations may be purchased singly

or on a subscription basis.

In addition to the printed translations, the Auslandsnormen-Service (Foreign Standards

Sales Section) maintains a large collection of typescript translations in English, French and

Spanish which outside companies and organizations have been authorized to prepare, but

which have not been reviewed by DIN. The essential bibliographic data of all available trans-

lations, in both printed and typescript formats (2005: 18,500), are referenced in the trans-

lations catalogue published annually as Volume 3 of the main DIN-Katalog für technische

Regeln.

Printed translations are to be ordered from Beuth Verlag (or, for customers outside Ger-

many, from their respective national standards body) and typescript translations from Aus-

landsnormen-Service.

As the most comprehensive European reference database on CD-ROM, Perinorm repre-

sents the complete source of information on the standards collections of national standards

SIS, SNV, SUTN, TSE, UNI, but also of information on European Standards (issued by CEN,

Beuth Verlag supplies copies of European Standards (DIN EN, in both the German and,

where available, English versions), International Standards in both the English and, where

Terms of delivery and payment of Beuth Verlag

1. Unless otherwise expressly confi rmed by Beuth Verlag in writing, the terms of delivery

and payment of Beuth Verlag apply to the exclusion of all others. They are also binding

in cases where contrary purchase conditions of the customer are not explicitly rejected.

In transactions with book trade distributors, the provisions of the current version of the

German book trade code apply supplementarily.

2. For electronic products, these terms of delivery and payment are supplemented by the

general terms and conditions applicable to the product concerned and incorporated in

the contract relating to it.

3. Delivery of goods shall be subject to their availability. In accordance with §§ 447 and 448

of the Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch (German Civil Code), all goods are consigned for the

account and risk of the purchaser. This expressly includes the forwarding charges.

4. The period of warranty shall be twelve months. The customer shall report any faulty

goods in writing to Beuth Verlag within eight days of receipt.

5. Claims for damage occurring in transit shall be made to the carrier and not to Beuth

Verlag.

6. Claims for damages by the customer on any legal grounds are excluded, in particu-

lar those arising from breaches of contract and unlawful acts. This does not apply in

cases where, for example, the Produkthaftungsgesetz (German Product Liability Law)

applies, in cases involving intent, gross negligence or injury, where a warranty covers a

particular aspect of the goods or where contractual obligations are breached. Liability

for breaching contractual obligations shall be limited to damage that can be reasonably

predicted within the terms of the contract, provided there is no evidence of intent or

gross negligence and no liability is to be accepted for a specifi c aspect of the goods.

This shall not shift the burden of proof to the disadvantage of the customer.

7. Until fi nal payment of all claims resulting from the business transaction has been made,

the goods supplied shall remain the property of Beuth Verlag. In the case of more than

one claim or an unpaid invoice, reservation of ownership shall serve as a warranty

against payment pending payment in full, even if payment for individual deliveries has

already been made. With the order, the customer assigns to the seller all claims deriv-

ing from resale and the seller accepts such assignment on taking the order.

8. The invoice amounts are, unless otherwise indicated on the invoices, due immediately

and without deductions. No cash discount shall be granted. At least EUR 5.00 will be

charged for requesting payment, in addition to interest at the standard bank rate. Beuth

Verlag is entitled to submit claims to the customer for any additional costs incurred.

If the customer defaults on payment or if Beuth Verlag has reason to believe that the

creditworthiness of the customer is at risk, Beuth Verlag is entitled to hold back deliv-

ery or to demand prepayment.

9. Technical rules, such as DIN Standards and VDI Codes of practice, are not book trade

articles. Beuth Verlag grants no trade discount on them. They may not be returned or

exchanged unless faulty.

10. If Beuth Verlag, despite being under no legal obligation to do so, agrees to take back

goods at the request of the customer, it may charge a handling fee of 10 % of the in-

voice amount or at least EUR 15.00.

11. The place of performance and jurisdiction is Berlin.

12. Transactions with customers abroad shall be subject to German substantive law only.

The Hague Conventions relating to a Uniform Law on the International Sale of Goods

and the UN Sales Convention shall not apply.

13. Beuth Verlag uses data processing facilities and stores customer information for its

business purposes and within the scope permitted by the Bundesdatenschutzgesetz

(Federal Data Protection Act). A data protection offi cer has been appointed. The cus-

tomer agrees to Beuth Verlag storing and processing his data, and making it available to

businesses within the DIN Group for advertising purposes. The customer may withdraw

his consent at any time for his data (name, title and address only) to be made available

for advertising purposes. E-mail advertising may not be used without the express con-

sent of the customer.

Compliance with DIN Standards

As a rule, the specifi cations given in DIN Standards are implemented because they are

deemed to represent good practice, and not because legislation has made compliance with

them mandatory. An obligation to comply with DIN Standards may, however, devolve from

contractual agreements (e.g. between supplier and purchaser), or in those instances where

DIN Standards have been incorporated in German laws or statutory regulations.

Even if compliance with DIN Standards is not explicitly stipulated, many contracts, regula-

tions and specifi cations state in general terms that certain products or procedures must

conform to the state of the art or good practice as documented in DIN Standards.

Exclusion of liability

DIN Standards are available for use by anyone, this person being directly responsible for

correctly applying the information contained therein.

DIN Standards are not the sole source of information on correct technical procedures ap-

plicable under normal conditions, but just one such source. It should also be borne in mind

that DIN Standards can only refl ect the state of the art existing at the time of their publica-

tion.

Compliance with DIN Standards does not, in itself, confer immunity from legal obligations.

In this regard, each person bears the risk of his/her own action. Any liability on the part of

DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung e. V. or of those persons involved in the preparation of

DIN Standards is excluded.

Anyone fi nding an inaccuracy, error, or ambiguity when applying a DIN Standard is re-

quested to notify DIN immediately so that prompt action can be taken.

Foreword

The move away from standardization at the national level towards an emphasis on the

European level continues at a rapid pace. This dynamic process presents a special chal-

lenge for those working in the iron and steel sectors, especially since steel grades and

product forms are being standardized for which no German standard exists. In addition,

national steel standards are being replaced almost daily by European Standards. In order

to keep abreast with this progress, it is necessary to publish new editions of the DIN Hand-

books on iron and steel at regular intervals.

As with the previous edition, this set of Handbooks (DIN Handbooks 401 to 405) is divided

up according to subject area. This volume, DIN Handbook 402, contains 9 new European

Standards which have replaced national standards. Four standards have been revised for

this edition (DIN EN 10152, DIN EN 10169-1 and DIN EN 10169-3 and DIN EN 10292).

It should be noted that, although draft standards appear in the original German Handbooks,

the English versions of these drafts are not included here. Such temporary editions may be

signifi cantly altered in their fi nal form, and so a decision was made to await the publication

of the fi nal versions of DIN EN Standards. The English equivalents become available shortly

afterwards and may be ordered individually from Beuth Verlag.

National Foreword

This Standard has been prepared by ECISS/TC 19/SC 1 “Concrete reinforcing and pre-stressing steels” (Secretariat: Germany) of the European Committee for Iron and Steel Standardization (ECISS). The respon-sible German body involved in its preparation was the Joint Committee Normung von Betonstahl und Spann-stahl of the Normenausschuss Eisen und Stahl (Steel and Iron Standards Committee) and Normenausschuss Bauwesen (Building and Civil Engineering Standards Committee).

EN 10080:2005 is a harmonized standard within the meaning of the EU Construction Products Directive (89/106/EEC). Under Mandate M/115 it therefore lays down general definitions and essential requirements for weldable reinforcing steel used for the reinforcement of concrete structures. The standard applies to bars, coils (rod, wire) and de-coiled products, sheets of factory-made machine-welded fabric, and lat-tice girders. It includes specifications for the evaluation and attestation of conformity, as well as informa-tion regarding the identification of the manufacturer and the technical class of the products. The annexes describe methods of testing lattice girders, which have not been standardized until now, as well as bond tests for ribbed and indented reinforcing steel.

This standard does not define ‘technical classes’. A ‘technical class’ of a reinforcing steel product is defined by means of various characteristics of the steel, the product being identified by means of the appropriate product number.

Reinforcing steel cannot be ordered and/or supplied according to this standard. Reinforcing steel can only be supplied according to product specifications in which ‚technical classes‘ are set out (such specifica-tions include European Standards, technical specifications, national standards – e.g. the new edition of the DIN 488 series of standards – or agréments issued by the building inspectorate). If the provisions of these product specifications are in agreement with the present standard, then products manufactured according to those specifications may bear the CE mark if they fulfil all the relevant requirements. A new edition of the DIN 488 series of standards is in preparation and will replace those standards listed in the supersedure statement.

Amendments

The following changes have been made to DIN 488-1, September 1984 edition, DIN 488-2, DIN 488-4 and DIN 488-6, June 1986 editions, and DIN V ENV 10080, August 1995 edition:

a) DIN 488-1, September 1984 edition

1) The standard also applies to reinforcing steel in the form of coils and lattice girders.

2) The standard does not specify any defined reinforcing steel grades.

3) Specifications regarding the chemical composition have been modified and a maximum value for the carbon equivalent is now specified.

1) The standard does not specify steel grades. Ordering reinforcing steel to this standard is not pos-sible.

This European Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee ECISS/TC 13 ‘Flat products for coldworking – Qualities, dimensions, tolerances and specific tests’, the Secretariat of which is held by IBN.

This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identicaltext or by endorsement, and conflicting national standards withdrawn, by February 1991 at the latest.

EN 10130 : 1991 + A1 : 1998

1 Scope

This European Standard applies to cold-rolled non-coated low carbon steel flat products in rolled widthsequal to or over 600 mm for cold forming, with aminimum thickness of 0,35 mm, and unless other-wise agreed at the time of ordering, equal to or lessthan 3 mm, delivered as sheet, coil, slit coil, or cutlengths obtained from slit coil or sheet.

It does not apply to cold-rolled narrow strip (rollingwidth < 600 mm) nor to flat cold-rolled products forwhich there is a specific standard, in particular thefollowing:

– cold-rolled non-grain oriented magnetic steelsheet and strip (EN 10106);

– semi-processed steel strip for the constructionof magnetic circuits (EN 10126 and EN 10165);

– blackplate in coils (EN 10205);

– steel sheet and strip for welded gas cylinders(EN 10120);

– hot-rolled flat products in high yield strengthsteels for cold forming (EN 10149-2-3);

– cold-rolled flat products in high yield strengthsteels for cold forming (prEN 10268);

– cold-rolled uncoated unalloyed mild steel nar-row strip for cold forming (EN 10139);

3 Definitions

For the purposes of this European Standard, thedefinitions of cold rolled flat products given inclause 1 are identical to those given in EN 10079.

4 Designation

The symbolic designation of steel grades in this Eu-ropean Standard is in conformity with EN 10027-1and CR 10260, the numerical designation is allo-cated in conformity with EN 10027-2.

The designation consists of the word: ‘sheet’, ‘widestrip’, ‘slit wide strip’ or ‘cut lengths’, followed by:

– a reference to this European Standard(EN 10130 + A1);

– the symbol DC;

– the grade designation (01, 03, 04, 05, or 06, orthe numerical designation);

– the symbol for the surface quality (A for surfacequality A or B for surface quality B);

– if applicable, the symbol for the surface finish(see table 1).

Examples of designation:

5 Requirements

5.1 Steelmaking and manufacturingprocesses

Unless otherwise agreed at the time of ordering, thesteelmaking and manufacturing processes are at themanufacturer’s discretion.

The purchaser shall be informed of these processes,if he so requests.

5.2 Deoxidation

For grade DC01, the method of deoxidation shall beat the manufacturer’s discretion. Grades DC03,DC04, DC05 and DC06 shall be fully killed.

5.3 Chemical composition

The chemical composition based on ladle analysisshall be as given in table 2.

5.4 Form supplied

5.4.1 Products specified in this standard are nor-mally supplied in the skin-passed condition. Byagreement at the time of ordering, non-skin-passedproducts may be supplied.

5.4.2 The products are normally delivered oiled. Inthis case, both the surfaces are preserved by a layerof neutral non-drying oil, free of foreign matter anduniformly spread in such a way that under normalconditions of packaging, transport, handling andstorage, the products will show no corrosion for upto three months.

If the conditions of transport or storage are such thatspecial protection against corrosion is required, thepurchaser shall inform the manufacturer at the timeof ordering.

The layer of oil shall be capable of being removed byalkaline solutions or normal solvents.

The choice of protective oil may be the subject ofspecial agreement.

If the purchaser does not require the surfaces to beoiled, this shall be clearly indicated at the time ofordering.

NOTE: If the order is for unoiled products, the manu-facturer is not responsible for the risk of rust. Thepurchaser is also advised that there is a greaterrisk of the appearance of light scratches duringhandling, transport, and putting into application.

5.5 Choice of properties

The products covered by this European Standardshall comply with the requirements of tables 1 and 2.By agreement, they may be delivered as suitable formaking a particular part; in this case, a maximumpercentage of scrap may be agreed and acceptanceon the basis of mechanical properties is not applica-ble.

5.6 Mechanical properties

The mechanical properties given in table 2 apply onlyto skin-passed products (see 5.8.2). The mechanicalproperties are valid for the period specified in table 2from the date on which the products are made avail-able.

For non-skin-passed products (see 5.8.3), the me-chanical properties shall be agreed at the time ofordering.

The date of availability shall be notified to the pur-chaser with reasonable prior notice compatible withthe validity of the mechanical properties. Prolongedstorage of products of grade DC01 could result insome change in the mechanical properties leading toa reduction in formability.

5.7 Surface characteristics

5.7.1 General

The surface characteristics comprise the surfacequality and the surface finish.

The surface quality and finish shall be specified bythe purchaser at the time of ordering.

For non-skin-passed products, surface quality B isnot applicable and no requirement for a particularsurface finish can be made.

5.7.2 Surface quality

The products are supplied with either of the surfacequalities (A or B).

– Surface quality A

Defects such as pores, slight indentations, smallmarks, minor scratches and slight colouringwhich do not affect formability or the applicationof surface coatings are permitted.

– Surface quality B

The better surface shall be free of defects whichmight affect the uniform appearance of a qualitypaint or an electrolytic coating (see 5.9). The othersurface shall at least conform to surface quality A.

When supplying coil or slit coil, the percentage ofdefects may be greater than when supplying sheet orcut lengths. This shall be taken into account by thepurchaser and the percentage of admissible surfacedefects shall be agreed at the time of ordering.

Unless otherwise agreed, a single surface of theproduct shall comply with the specified require-ments. The other surface shall be such that duringsubsequent treatment it does not have a deleteriouseffect on the better surface.

5.7.3 Surface finish

The surface finish may be bright, semi-bright, normalor rough. In the absence of a requirement on the or-der, products shall be supplied with normal finish.

Limiting values for the average surface roughness forthe four types of finish are given in table 1. The meas-urement shall be made in accordance withEURONORM 49.

By agreement at the time of ordering, other rangesfor surface roughness may be specified for specificend uses.

5.8 Stretcher strain marks

5.8.1 General

All products are generally subjected to a light skin-pass after anealing at the manufacturer’s works toavoid the formation of stretcher strain marks duringsubsequent forming.

The tendency to form such marks may reappear acertain time after skin-passing.

It is therefore in the purchaser’s interest to form theproducts as soon as possible.

Products of grade DC06 do not exhibit stretcherstrain marks whether delivered skin-passed or non-skin-passed.

5.8.2 Skin-passed products

The manufacturer shall ensure the absence ofstretcher strain marks:

– for 6 months after products of grades DC03,DC04 and DC05 were made available, for surfacequalities A and B,

– for 3 months after products of DC01 were madeavailable for surface quality B.

5.8.3 Non-skin-passed products

Stretcher strain marks are permitted in the conditionof delivery and on drawn items.

5.9 Suitability for surface coating

The products may be intended for metallic coatingby the hot dip coating, or other coating process, and/or organic or other coatings. When such a coating isrequired, it shall be specified at the time of ordering.

5.10 Weldability

The material is specified as suitable for normal weld-ing procedures. It is, however, desirable to state thewelding procedure at the time of ordering but essen-tial to do so in the case of gas welding.

5.11 Tolerances on shape and dimensions

Tolerances on shape and dimensions are given inEuropean Standard EN 10131.

6 Testing

6.1 General

6.1.1 The purchaser shall specify, at the time ofordering, his requirements for

– type of inspection and testing: specific or non-specific; see EN 10021;

– type of inspection document; see EN 10204.

6.1.2 Specific inspection and testing shall be car-ried out in accordance with 6.2 to 6.6.

6.1.3 Specific inspection and testing may not bespecified either for the product analysis or the sur-face finish.

6.2 Inspection units

The inspection unit is 30 t or a fraction of 30 t ofproducts of the same grade and nominal thickness.When a coil exceeds 30 t, it constitutes a single in-spection unit, as do its products.

6.3 Number of tests

For each inspection unit a tensile test shall be carriedout and where appropriate, determination of n and r(see table 2 and annexes A and B).

6.4 Sampling

The requirements of EURONORM 18 and EN 10021are supplemented by the following specific require-ments.

– for sheet and cut lengths, the selection of prod-ucts to be tested and the position of the samplesin the products is at the discretion of the inspec-tor;

– in the case of coil and slit coil, the sampleshould preferably be taken from the outer end.

If the width of the product permits, the test pieces forthe tensile test shall be taken perpendicular to thedirection of rolling.

6.5 Test methods

6.5.1 The products shall be tested in the form sup-plied.

The tests shall be carried out at ambient tempera-ture.

6.5.2 The tensile test shall be carried out as de-scribed in EN 10002-1, using the 2 specimens (initialgauge length L0 = 80 mm, width b = 20 mm) as de-scribed in annex A of EN 10002-1.

6.5.3 Surface roughness shall be determined inaccordance with EURONORM 49.

6.5.4 The determination of the plastic strain ratio rand the tensile strain hardening component n shallbe carried out in accordance with annexes A and B ofthis standard.

6.5.5 For the determination of the chemical com-position, the corresponding European Standardsand EURONORMs shall apply in cases of dispute.

6.6 Retests

The requirements of EN 10021 shall apply.

For coils, in the event of the test results giving rise todispute, the samples for retests shall be taken atintervals of at least one lap, but also at a maximumdistance of 20 m from the appropriate end.

6.7 Inspection document

By agreement at the time of ordering, an inspectiondocument chosen from those given in EuropeanStandard EN 10204 shall be supplied (see also6.1.1).

7 Marking

Unless otherwise agreed at the time of ordering,marking shall be carried out on the inspected surfaceby means of an easily removed non-corrosive ink.

8 Packaging

The packaging requirements shall be agreed whenordering.

Annex A (normative)Method of determination of the plastic strain ratio r

NOTE: This annex A is based upon the procedures being developed by ISO/TC 164/SC 2.

A.2 Principle

The method involves carrying out a tensile test to aspecified strain level of 20 % and of determining theplastic strain ratio by calculation from measure-ments of the changes in length and width for a giventest piece.

As the determination is to be carried out in the rangeof uniform deformation, then, if the uniform elonga-tion of the tested material is lower than 20 %, strainvalues of 15 % to 20 % can be applied. The strainlevel shall be given as subscript y. The orientation ofthe test piece relative to the rolling direction shall begiven as subscript x (see A.1.2).

A.3 Testing equipment

A.3.1 The testing machine and method of grippingshall comply with the requirements of EN 10002-1and EN 10002-2.

A.3.2 When the gauge length and width are deter-mined using an extensometer, the class of theextensometer shall be 1 or better according toEN 10002-4.

A.4 Test piece

A.4.1 The sampling and preparation of the testpiece shall be in accordance with EN 10002-1. Thetest piece type shall be No. 2 (80 mm/20 mm).

A.4.2 The gauge length shall be between 50 mmand 80 mm but preferably 80 mm. The gauge lengthshall be measured to within t 0,01 mm and the testpiece width shall be measured to within t 0,005 mm,using devices having adequate accuracy.

A.5 Procedure

A.5.1 In general, the test is carried out at ambienttemperature between 10 °C and 35 °C. Tests carriedout under controlled conditions shall be at a tem-perature of (23 t 5) °C.

A.5.2 If the measurement is made manually, theoriginal width of the test piece shall be measured inat least three locations distributed equally over thegauge length (one measurement at each end of thegauge length). The mean value of the width shall betaken for calculation of the plastic strain ratio r.

A.5.3 If the measurements are made automati-cally, the original gauge length and at least one widthmeasurement shall be set according to the require-ments for extensometers of class 1 or better asspecified in EN 10002-4.

A.5.4 The speed of the machine, as defined by thespeed of separation of crossheads of the machine,expressed as a percentage of the parallel length perminute, shall in no case exceed 50.

A.5.5 Mount the test piece in the grips of the test-ing machine and apply the load in accordance withA.5.4:

a) to achieve the prescribed strain (manual de-termination);

b) to determine the width values at the pre-scribed strain level (automatic determination).

A.5.6 For manual determination, after removingthe load, measure the gauge length L and gaugewidth b in the same manner and to the same toler-ance as for original values.

A.5.7 For automatic determination, the length andwidth at prescribed strain level are measured ac-cording to A.4.2.

A.5.8 For manual determination, calculate theplastic strain ratio in accordance with A.1.2.

A.5.9 For automatic determination, the plasticstrain ratio is obtained directly using an automatictensile testing machine and data processing pro-gramme. The elastic strains (in both width and lengthdirections) shall be considered.

A.5.10 Calculate the weighted average r in ac-cordance with A.1.3.

A.6 Interpretation of results

A.6.1 Determined values of plastic strain ratio rshall be rounded to 0,05.

A.6.2 If the test piece shows any transverse bowwhich could influence the test results, the test shallbe considered invalid and a new test shall be carriedout.

A.6.3 If the plastic strain was inhomogeneous, thetest results shall be considered invalid and a new testshall be carried out.

A.6.4 In cases of dispute, testing shall be carriedout with three test pieces of the specified orientationrelative to the rolling direction. The average value ofthe three tests shall be considered.

A.7 Test report

The orientation of the applied strain relative to therolling direction shall be added as subscript x. Theapplied strain value, if not 20 %, shall be given assubscript y.

B.2 Principle

The test involves uniaxial tensile loading of the testpiece at the prescribed rate in the interval includingthe region of the uniform plastic strain.

The strain hardening exponent is determined withinthe strain range of 10 % to 20 %. As the determina-tion shall be carried out in the range of uniform defor-mation, then, if the uniform elongation of the testedmaterial is lower than 20 %, values for the upper limitof the strain range of 15 % to 20 % can be applied.In this case, the upper strain limit shall be given assubscript y (see B.1.3).

B.3 Test equipment

The responsible German body involved in its preparation was the Normenausschuss Eisen und Stahl (Steeland Iron Standards Committee), Technical Committee Verpackungsblech.

Amendments

The following amendments have been made to the March 1990 edition and to DIN EN 10203, August 1991edition.

a) Both standards have been combined into one standard.

b) Steel names are now based on yield strength.

c) Material numbers have been included.

d) Steel grade DR 660 has been dropped and grades TS260, TS290, TS550, TH520 and TH580 have beenincluded.

e) Nominal surface roughness and tensile strength values have been specified (cf. tables 1 and 4).

f) Annex A giving the chemical composition of steels for tinmill products and Annex B specifying a de-tinning method have been included.

g) Tolerances on edge wave, bow, centre fullness and passivation thickness have been specified.

h) The tolerances for tin coatings have been amended and maximum values for high speed weldingapplications have been specified.

i) The tolerances on thickness, feather edge and out-of-squareness have been amended.

Amendments

In comparison with DIN 17119 and DIN 17120, June 1984 editions, and DIN 17123 and DIN 17125, May 1986editions, the following amendments have been made:

a) The specifications for cold formed welded seamless and welded hollow sections of circular, squareor rectangular cross section have been combined.

b) The specifications for the chemical composition and mechanical properties have been amended (inaccordance with DIN EN 10025 and DIN EN 10113 series).

c) More details have been given with regard to non-destructive testing.
