For Angie Davis, it was another Friday doing what she loves

to do: help students at the Holley Alternative High School. Unbeknownst to her, a News 8 Golden Apple Award, along with a group of people, was about to come her way.

Before the surprise, HCSD senior Travis Finger was in the foyer of the Elementary School speaking with newscaster Kevin Doran. Finger nominated Davis for the award and Doran, along with a cameraman, was there to surprise the teacher’s assistant.

“Angie Davis is one of the best teachers I know,” Finger told the news crew. “She’s always there for you in the classroom.”

Moments later, a group consisting of Finger, Doran, Elementary Principal Karri Schiavone, Director of Special Programs Tim Dunham, Finger’s parents and the cameraman were headed towards the Alternative High School. It was surprise time.

The surprise was a success and it was all caught on camera for the news broadcasts. The video ran on Jan. 22 and is available online as well.

“I think we’re here to help them learn and how do you get them to learn unless you are willing to go above and beyond,” said Davis in her interview.

In his nomination letter to News 8, Finger wrote, “Angie Davis keeps a positive attitude towards learning. Angie Davis goes way beyond in finding resources to help the student succeed. Angie Davis is the teacher who will always be there for you with an overall goal of academic success. Angie Davis is a perfect candidate for a Golden Apple Award.”

The News 8 Golden Apple Award winners are selected by a panel of judges based on information received through a nomination form. Any professional working for or with any school district within the Rochester designated market area is eligible for this award. Those nominating individuals are able to submit an essay of 250 words or less describing the character of the nominee.

Middle/High School Principal Sue Cory honored Zelent with a Soaring to New Heights award for her tendency to go above and beyond for students. Cory recounted a recent college visit Zelent took with students, providing an opportunity outside of the classroom for students to prepare for post-secondary life.

Take free college classes with Genesee Promise PlusGenesee Promise Plus is a special

program designed specifically for high school students who are graduating in June 2013 from a high school located in Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties in New York State. Under Genesee Promise Plus, every GLOW area June 2013 high school graduate will receive a scholarship covering the cost of tuition for one or two summer 2013 courses offered by Genesee Community College at any of its seven campus locations in Albion, Arcade, Batavia, Dansville, Lakeville, Medina, and Warsaw. Mark your calendars for the Bring your Sweetheart Dance

on Friday, Feb. 8 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. in the Elementary School cafeteria. Students can bring their mom, dad, grandmother or grandfather. There will be snacks and flowers for sale, as well as a photo booth.

The February Soaring to New Heights Awards honored twoindividuals for their dedication to Holley students.

Tyler Hoag has gone above and beyond in working as a mentor to a seventh-grader Jordan Brooks. Hoag takes it upon himself to always find time to meet with Brooks. He takes an active role in caring about Brooks’ grades and school performance. Samantha Zelent, school social worker, nominated Hoag and said, “Tyler is a sweet, humble, caring, young man who is really making a difference in another’s life.”

Holley Central School District is partnering with area businesses

to begin the area’s biggest weight loss challenge. The first annual Biggest Winner Contest is being organized by a committee at Holley Central Schools: Elementary Principal Karri Schiavone; Teachers Amie Callan, Lisa Campbell, Sharon Gross, Mary Kelly, Christine Langelotti, Mandy Roth, Kristen Wagner; Instructional Aide Darlene Moore; and Food Service Manager Vickie Scroger. Co-sponsors include Dollinger’s, Sea Breeze and Sam’s Diner. The list of committee members and co-sponsors continues to grow.

‘Biggest Winner’ Contest to begin soon in HolleyThe contest is open to any person residing or working within the Holley Central School District. The weight reduction contest starts Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the first educational seminar and ends in late May. Weigh-ins will occur once a month at school, will be kept anonymous, and will be conducted by the school nurses. Contest results will be based on a percentage of contestants’ body weights. Each weigh-in will feature a seminar for all participants, who must attend all seminars in order to be eligible for grand prizes. There will be grab bag drawings at each seminar for all in attendance and grand prizes for the ‘Biggest Winners.’

Registration forms may be obtained at either school. The deadline to register is Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the first seminar.

Elementary Physical Education Teacher Lisa Campbell said she had no idea what was in the big boxes that

began to arrive at Holley Elementary School but that it seemed like Christmas! Inside the boxes was $1,000 of brand new physical education equipment from the Buffalo Bills, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York and the American Heart Association. Through the Play 60 Challenge, these organizations select 20 local elementary schools (third through fifth grade) to receive $1,000 worth of sports equipment (footballs, basketballs, soccer balls, etc.) for their physical education classrooms.The Play 60 Challenge was created in an effort to promote physical activity for 60 minutes every day (30 minutes in school and 30 minutes at home). Campbell submitted a registration form in November and when she didn’t hear anything, she assumed that Holley Elementary hadn’t won…then the boxes started to arrive.“By registering, the school pledges to challenge students to be physically active for 60 minutes every day,” she said.

players from grades 4-6, will play a short scrimmage.

• A raffle will be held for two Buffalo Sabres authentic jerseys and two tickets to the game vs. the New Jersey Devils on March 2 at 3 p.m. (Estimated value: $400)

Throughout the games: • Chance auction items will be set up on

a table in the foyer with tickets sold at the door. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the game.

• Fifty-fifty raffle tickets will be sold at the door. The winner will be drawn between the first and second quarters of the varsity game.

Donations are being accepted for baskets and money for basket items, along with gift cards/gift certificates and items for the chance auction. If you are able to donate these items, please contact Mark Thomas ([email protected]) as soon as possible.

Raffle tickets for the Buffalo Sabres package are available before the game. Please see Mark Thomas or a JV/varsity girls basketball player. Tickets are $5 and presence at the game is not required to win.

In addition to the equipment, the school received a teacher’s guide, student activity sheets, Play 60 certificates and a classroom scoreboard.

On Feb. 5, the girls JV and varsity basketball teams will be sponsoring a Senior Night PINK basketball game and raising money for the More Than a Game Foundation to benefit cancer patients at Golisano’s Children’s Hospital. The JV

game starts at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game will follow at approximately at 7 p.m. All monies raised will be donated to the More Than a Game Foundation. The teams hope to raise over $1,000.



Elementary Students of the

Month for December

After a successful fall campaign, female students in grades 3-5 will have an opportunity to participate in Girls on the Run in the spring.

Girls on the Run is a national organization that is curriculum based to build self esteem and confidence in girls while encouraging activity. The 10-week program is in a team-like setting with 15 girls and two coaches. Holley’s program was founded by Lynn Vendetti and Paula Sanford. The spring season will be coached by Kim Harrington and Corrinda Shepherd.

Registration begins on Feb. 27 through the Girls on the Run website. The group fills once there are 15 registrants. A wait list will be created for those who do not make the initial 15.There is a $150 program fee which includes sessions throughout the 10-week program, a healthy snack at the sessions, an official Girls on the Run of Buffalo T-shirt, a water bottle and 5K race registration for designated GOTR end-of-season 5K.

Scholarships are available online on a sliding scale up to 100 percent of program cost. Application is available at the end of the registration form. Applicants will be notified by GOTR staff if they qualify for financial aid and a spot will be held once you register.

Registration will be held in the Elementary Library classroom (room 49). You will need the following documents in order to register your child: birth certificate, immunization record and proof of residency (utility bill, etc.). You will not be able to register without these documents.

Pre-K and kindergarten physicals are required by Sept. 1.

No pre-k registration will be allowed before March 19.

In order to register for pre-k, children must be four years of age by Dec. 1, 2013. In order to register for kindergarten, children must be five years of age by Dec. 1, 2013.



Holley Middle School/High School will present the Disney version of “Tarzan” with musical score by Phil Collins. Similar to the Disney movie, a shipwreck

leaves an infant orphaned on the West African shore. The helpless baby is taken under the protection of a gorilla tribe and becomes part of their family. When he

eventually encounters his first human – Jane Porter, a curious young explorer – both their worlds are transformed forever.

College Admission Information Night (C.A.I.N.) College Admission Information Night is quickly approaching!
