Course Goals: This course is designed to familiarize students with single-color tone reproduction and correction. It is not intended to produce proficient technicians. Rather, students completing the class will have a broad overview of print production operations so that they may effectively supervise or estimate printing jobs, communicate technically with printing vendors or buyers, and/or design graphic products giving full consideration to the limitations inherent in pre-press operations.

This course is designed to be taken by committed Digital Media majors and Graphic Communications Technology minors. Others may enroll in the class. However, Professor Pierce's quality and dedication expectations are the same no matter the student's major.

Students completing the course will describe, demonstrate, compare, analyze, integrate, and critique Digital Media technologies related to:

1. the graphic production workflow including traditional,pure digital, and hybrid models; job engineering; andrelevant hardware, software, and file formats.

2. methods of reproducing various types of copy, includingtype, linework, grayscale, process color, and duotones.

3. tone reproduction, including densitometry, halftoning,scanning, conversion of color images to grayscale, up- and down-sampling, the Nyquist theorem, choice of LPI,the relationship between LPI, DPI, and PPI, and the effectof incorrect LPI, DPI, or PPI choices.

4. tone correction, including the impact of tonal valueincrease (TVI), maximum and minimum effective dot sizes,tone range compression, substrate, and ink.

5. proofing, including the role and limitations of variousproofing systems and the analysis of proofs.

6. platesetting, including the output of grayscale images andline work to plate.

7. image transfer systems, including an introduction to off-set lithographic presses, laser printers, and direct digitaldevices.

8. bindery systems, including cutting, chipping, and pad-ding.

Recommended text: Johansson, K., Lundberg, P., and Ryberg, R. A Guide to Graphic Print Production. Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley and Sons: 2011. ISBN 978-0-470-90792-4.

Required tools: Ball point pen(s), scientific calculator (your phone is fine).

Optional tools: (you’ll need to get these sooner or later!) 20X magnifier (loupe), stainless steel ruler graduated in inches and picas.

Required disk: USB flash drive or portable hard drive for backing up and archiving your projects.

PDF files: Several handouts for the course will only be supplied in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format. Acrobat Reader is available free of charge from the Adobe Website (www.adobe.com). You can read the files on-screen or print the files on your own printer. However, you may not print them using the Image Tech Lab’s machine (we don’t have the budget for all the paper and toner it would take). The PDF files for this course can be copied from the instructional materials folder on the lab’s computers to your Zip disk or you may access the instructional materials server from any computer using your web browser (http://www.uh.edu/tech/digitalmedia/).

Why 10 hours per week? DIGM 3351 is a lecture/lab class and is governed by University policy as well as policies of the accrediting bodies. First, students should understand that each hour of class credit requires three hours per week in a “long” semester, such as Fall or Spring: one hour in lecture and two hours of personal study/homework. Thus, a three-hour course requires nine hours per week in a “long” semester: three in class and six on your own. However, lab earns in-class credit at one-third the rate of lecture. Thus, it takes three hours of lab to earn one hour of lecture credit. DIGM 3351 requires you to spend two hours in lecture. For those two hours, you receive two hours of credit. The three hours of lab, counted together, are worth one hour of credit. Thus, you spend five hours per week in a three-hour lecture/lab class. Remember that you still “owe” Professor Pierce a total of nine hours for the three-hour course. Nine minus five equals four. Thus, you should spend four hours per week on your own reading, studying, and working on homework and on-line quizzes. That’s the expectation of this course.

Your personal study/lab time needs to total at least eight hours per week. Your time commitment for this class is at least 9 hours per week. If you cannot commit this time, please drop the class.

Lecture assignments: On-Line Quizzes: There will be weekly quizzes on Blackboard. These quizzes are open notes/open book and may be taken at your leisure during the week each quiz is available. They will form the basis of the midterm and final, although questions not appearing in the quizzes may be used in the exams.

Written Exams: There will be two exams given—a midterm and a final. The midterm will cover all lecture material covered up to the exam. The final will cover all material covered after the midterm. In general, plan to answer those on-line quiz questions that stumped a large percentage of the class.

Senior Thesis/Term Paper: Every Digital Media major is required to complete a “research thesis.” Your thesis will be related to a question, within Digital Media (print, Internet, photography, motion media, animation, management, leadership, logistics, marketing, and so forth) that you would like to answer. You should choose a question that interests you…something that you want to be an “expert” in by the time you graduate. Once you choose a question, you will not be allowed to change it. You will work on this question for four semesters. So, pick something interesting!

In each DIGM class, beginning with 2350, you will be asked to do research and, in doing so, expand your knowledge base. Then, you are to write your findings in a short (two-three page) paper that meets the APA (American Psychological Association) manuscript requirements.

In DIGM 3351 you should be working on Chapter 1: “Statement of the Problem” section of your thesis.

Your thesis will culminate when you are a senior and take DIGM

4399 (Senior Thesis). In the Senior Thesis class, the goal is for you to complete a paper that can be submitted as a student article to a professional journal. A flowchart that shows how your thesis will be prepared can be found at http://sites.tech.uh.edu/digitalmedia/materials/senior-thesis-flowchart.pdf. A copy is also provided on the last page of this syllabus.

If you are not a Digital Media major, you still have to write a short (two-three page) paper for this class on a topic related to Digital Media (see sub-areas above). Your task is to compare how the class you are taking in Digital Media supports or complements your major.

Your paper will be graded according to the University of Houston's Undergraduate Writing Assessment Rubric. You can find this rubric at http://sites.tech.uh.edu/digitalmedia/materials/writing-rubric.pdf.

The quality of your paper is extremely important to the Digital Media program. Part of the assessment that the University (and others) uses the evaluate our program includes the number of seniors whose theses are ranked Exemplary or Acceptable. If you earn an Unacceptable rating on your paper, the entire DIGM program and all of its students suffer.

You are writing PART of a paper for this class. It can be NO MORE than three pages long. It has four sub-sections that are:

• Introduction• Research Question• Significance of the Study• Definition of Terms and Reference List

Please note that YOU ARE NOT WRITING AN ENTIRE PAPER.

Your paper will be due in stages (see the course schedule). After your first submission, you will ADD content to what you’ve already written each time you submit it.

ALL STUDENTS IN THIS CLASS are REQUIRED to meet personally with Dr. Waite to discuss this research paper/project in detail.

Netiquette in Class: The College of Technology’s buildings are fully wireless capable. That means that you can log-on to the Internet from any part of any of our buildings, including the classrooms. We encourage you to bring your laptops, netbooks, and so forth to lectures so that you can take digital notes, download materials your

professor provide, and take advantage of websites that your professor suggests.

However, it is extremely rude to use your laptop for surfing the web, answering e-mails, playing games, or other off-task functions during class. It is also a waste of your money since your lectures are packed with important information being presented by your professor who knows more about the topic than you do. You are paying money to be in class. Do not waste your money by trying to ineffectively multi-task during class!

Cellphones, PDAs, and other handheld devices fall into the same category as laptops. They should not be used for non-class activities.

The professor realizes that you are an adult and are free to squander your time any way you want. However, you do NOT have the right to interfere with other students who are trying to listen to lectures. Therefore, if you insist on texting, e-mailing, or surfing, sit in the back of the classroom where you won’t bother anybody.

Extra credit: Overall course extra credit may be earned in three ways:

1. You may participate in the University of Houston chapter of the Graphic Communications Education Association (GCEAUH). Students who join GCEAUH and attend association meetings can earn up to three percent extra credit on their final grades (one point per meeting). GCEAUH officers may receive five points of extra credit on their final grades.

2. Visit the Printing Museum. Take a selfie inside the museum. Prepare a short report about the section you found most interesting. This is worth two percent 2% bonus credit. (Closed due to fire.)

3. A third, and potentially most valuable, method to earn extra credit is to submit HANDWRITTEN NOTES that you have taken during lecture and/or lab. These notes should be in a spiral binder and be clearly identified by topic and date. This extra credit assignment is worth five percent (5%).

Attendance: Attendance at all class sessions is expected. There will be a grade penalty for all absences. In other words, there is no such thing as an excused absence. Be on time for lectures and labs! Tardies (defined as arriving after attendance has been taken) count as 1/2 an absence. You may

only accumulate three total absences—lecture or lab, full-days or tardies. You may be dropped after the fourth absence. Look at it this way: there is no way to make up any lecture or lab that you miss. Notes from friends or textbook readings are no substitute for actually being present in class when your professor explains a concept or process. Here’s another thought: you and the taxpayers of the State of Texas are paying your professor to be present in the DIGM 3351 class. Why pay money for something you don’t take? Another notion: attending class is like attending a concert. If you show up late, or don’t show up at all, you’ll miss the concert. The band is not going to play the show again for you! Neither will your professor teach the topic again.

Lab assignments: Lab assignments are to be completed as soon as possible. In addition, they are to be placed into a hard-copy portfolio (as appropriate) to be submitted on the lab day during midterm week (for review purposes) and on the day of the final exam (for grading). Include all the projects listed on the course schedule unless otherwise instructed by your professor or lab instructor. Hard-copy portfolios may be as simple or elaborate as desired. However, students should remember that they only get one opportunity to make a good first impression.

All lab assignments are also to be converted to web-optimized PDF format for placement on the student’s on-line portfolio. Instructions will be given in class.

Lab assignments are all graded according to the following rubric:

Unsubmitted projects will receive an F grade.

If a project is submitted but has any technical flaw that will prevent it from working, it will receive a D grade. For example,

if the project is submitted at the wrong size, it will receive a D.

C is the standard project grade. It means that the content of the project is technically accurate.

A B project is not only technically accurate, but also attractive. In addition to “working,” the project shows that the student has applied the basic principles of graphic design (use of type, balance, and so forth).

A is assigned to projects in which the student has obviously gone above and beyond the call of duty. Captions and attractive presentation are examples of “beyond the call of duty.”

There is no need for a student to earn any less than a B on any project. Don’t be meek! Show your work to Mr. Le or Professor Pierce in advance for advice!

Projects are to be kept and submitted in a 13 X 19” portfolio (samples will be shown in class). This oversized format is necessary to support the printing plates you will make in class as well as the press sheets you will print.

Portfolios are due for at midterm and again on the final day of class. Any grade earned on a project during the midterm preliminary review can be upgraded by the student by repairing defects or improving the appearance of the work the week after grading. Simply resubmit your reworked projects to Mr. Le or Professor Pierce. Grades for projects submitted on the day of the final examination are final.

Grade expectations: Professor Pierce expects students in the course to be capable and motivated professionals. No such student should be content with a grade less than “B.” Please provide the attention, motivation and effort necessary to reach this grade expectation.

Test/exam policy: Blackboard quizzes and exams: you may use any materials you’d like during these quizzes. However, you may not, under any circumstance, cheat. Focus your attention on http://www.uh.edu/provost/student-success/stu_syllabsuppl/ . Note that, according to University policy, your professor can take one or more of several actions if you cheat. Sanctions may include, but are not limited to: a lowered grade, failure on the examination or assignment in question, failure in the course, probation, suspension, or expulsion from the University of Houston, or a combination of these. Use of content posted by other students on sites such as quizlet.com IS CHEATING. If your written answer on a quiz matches the exact

verbiage of my answer key, you will get a zero on the quiz. Earn three such zeroes, and I will report you and recommend suspension.

Due date policy: Late work is “yesterday’s news.” In keeping with this idea, assignments must be turned in as scheduled. Please see the class schedule for specific due dates. Late work will receive a grade penalty of 10% per class session. If you cannot attend class on a day that an assignment is due, you must make arrangements to get the work to Professor Pierce no later than the next business day.

Adds/drops: Please refer to the University’s Undergraduate Catalog and the Schedule of Classes for the appropriate add/drop dates and procedures. Those procedures must be followed to the letter.

Incompletes: An “incomplete” grade will only be issued if the student is maintaining an acceptable level of achievement and cannot, due to some factor beyond the control of the student, complete one or more major assignment. If a student wishes an “incomplete” grade, s/he must explain the situation to Dr. Waite in advance and make specific arrangements to make up missing work no later than one year after the “incomplete” is issued.

Classroom cleanliness: Janitorial services are rarely provided in the Digital Media labs. For this reason, and to keep the equipment clean, no food or drink is allowed in the room for any reason at any time. Please clean up after yourself!

FAX: The college will not accept assignments that are faxed to the office. There is no use trying.

As a Digital Media student I hereby acknowledge and/or agree (check each item and sign at the bottom)1:

The Digital Media Program is offered by UH Main Campus. It is headquartered on the Sugar Land Satellite location of UH Main Campus. All 3000 and 4000 major classes are offered in Sugar Land. The only DIGM courses taught on the Calhoun Campus are sophomore level.

A UH Shuttle provides transportation from the Calhoun Campus to the Sugar Land location. I acknowledge that the schedule is posted on the http://www.uh.edu/sugarland/ website.

To maintain progress toward timely graduation, I will see an Academic Counselor at least once per semester.

I have received and reviewed the Digital Media Program…Hows and Whys booklet.

I understand the purpose of the Digital Media Core.

I have read about the Digital Media Program's Areas of Emphasis. I know that I need to speak with my professors and/or the Program Coordinator (Dr. Waite) to help me decide which area to choose and that this decision does not need to be made until my junior year.

I have read and understand the Digital Media course flowcharts available in the Digital Media Program…Hows and Whys booklet and on the www.uh.edu/tech/digitalmedia website and will follow them. I will complete required prerequisites before enrolling in classes.

Any exceptions to my degree plan (i.e., transfer credit) must be submitted via General- or Transfer-Petition to the Academic Services Center.

I acknowledge that the Digital Media Program does not offer every course every semester.

I acknowledge that if I fail to take a core or emphasis-area Digital Media course when it is offered that I may delay my graduation date.

I will regularly review the Digital Media Program's website at www.uh.edu/tech/digitalmedia.

I will set my UH email account to forward messages to my personal email account and then read every email sent to me by my Digital Media Professors, through the Digital Media Student Listserv, and from the Academic Services Center.

(DIGM MAJORS ONLY) I will take every module of the course DIGM 1000 that appears on my Blackboard home page.

Not all software supported in Sugar Land will be supported in the lab on the Calhoun Campus.

I understand that last minute technology glitches are inherent in a Technology College. It is my responsibility to get my work done in advance in order to avoid such issues.

If I have a problem with any aspect of the Digital Media Program or any Digital Media course, I will respect my Professor and/or Program Coordinator (Dr. Waite) by speaking with him/her personally as soon as possible.
