1 Introduction

The On-Field-Tester (aka OFT) is an application developed for Windows CE on the Microsoft .NET

CompactFramework 2.0.

Its goal is to simplify the Digitax mobile terminal installations and check the quality of it.

The application wants to achieve mainly two needs:

The first is to help installers during the installation of the mobile data terminals. With the OFT they

can verify the connections between the terminal and the vehicle sensors such as the engine input

and they can check the correct installation of the system’s components like the GPS and GPRS

antennas.

The second need is to send to the taxi central a report about the correct installation of the device

on the vehicle. The report contains also parameters and information collected by the tests. This

allows a faster enrollment procedure to the OTA (Over-The-Air) Automatic Update System Server

and to the company dispatch server. For example the taxi name and the car model will be typed by

the installer during hardware testing and the hardware ID is read by the OFT; this values does not

need to be re-typed during the data entry on the central because they will be got from the

uploaded report.

OFT is a modular application. Each test has been developed for specifics data terminals produced by

Digitax. Each type of terminal will have its custom tests list and, on demand, new tests can be developed to

verify particular company conditions, connections, sensors and so on, or to simply made an on-field data

entry.

The collected information then will be sent to the OTA server by the report included into the enrollment

request.

If the installer has a PrinterDue or PrinterTre device and the application is enabled for report, the installer

can print a receipt with the current tests status each time he needs. After a successful enrollment request

the report output will be frozen and it will contain the ID referring the request placed on the OTA server

and a timestamp. The receipt will become a document for the installer certifying the correct hardware

installation on the vehicle.

2 OFT application

Double tapping on the On Field Tester link, application will start. In some configurations the OFT could be

start at Windows start-up and cannot be closed until all tests will be successfully passed.

Starting you can see main window application loads tests from library, read device’s hardware ID and load

previous session data; if all these operation are successfully completed application’s main form will be

visualized.

2.1 Main form

The main form displays on its top the testing device’s hardware ID.

The underlying list displays the tests list for the device with their last-run state. Tests are colored according

to status;

Gray test has Not Run

Red test has Failed

Green test has Passed

The state of each test is saved by the OFT at every test execution to a persistent area and it will be loaded

at every OFT start.

In the “One click run” group are located 2 buttons to quick lunch a test session; Missing will execute a list of

all not passed tests (not run and failed ones will be run). All button will launch a session with all tests in list.

Each test can be launched alone selecting it and pressing Run button.

On the bottom of the window there are 3 utility buttons:

Reboot button: will shutdown Windows and restart device directly from the OFT application.

Reset button: will invalidate all tests setting them to the “Not Run” status and removing all the

collected parameters/information. Use it only if you want to re-test everything. Rollback of this

action is not possible.

DU (Default Update) button: will contact OTA server to request a Default Update procedure for the

device. To execute this command RAS connection is required, so be sure that SIM card is present to

allow internet connection. If “GPRS connection” test fails, maybe this operation will fail too. The

Default Update procedure will assign an update which should update the device to the last version.

This button could be not visible if the company is not supporting the OTA service.

2.2 Running a single test

To run a single test tap on it to activate Run button, then tap the Run button to execute the selected test.

When a test is running a container window embedding the test panel will be opened; on the top side of the

window are displayed test name and test identification code, on the bottom are displayed test running

mode and last response timestamp if the test has been already run.

Up arrow ( /\ ) and down arrow ( \/ ) on the main form are used to select previous or next test on the list

from selected one.

For the ForceOne MDT you can scroll the tests list by the hardware arrow buttons on the left of the device’s

screen and launch them by the accept hardware button too.

2.3 Running the missing tests

When in list is present at least one Not Run or Failed test, Missing button is enabled. Tapping it all tests

that are not passed will be run. When a tests list is running, in the test container windows will appear a

Stop button; tapping it the list execution will be broken after the execution of the current test.

2.4 Run all tests

Tapping on All button all tests will be run one at a time even if their state is passed. Even in this case a Stop

button will be shown in the container window to break the list execution at any time.

2.5 Report form

Report button on the main form will show a window reporting all tests current status as main form’s list

but with more details. In report window are also shown response’s parameters from each test. In the

bottom side of this window are shown three colored boxes counting respectively passed, failed and not run

tests. If the installer has a Digitax PrinterDue or PrinterTre and if the report printing is enabled, the Print

report button will be shown on the bottom of the window. Tapping it a quick report will be printed on a

receipt with the status end the parameters collected by all the tests. If an enrollment request has been

performed with success the output report is frozen at the enroll request time and the request ID will be

included in the printed report.

2.6 Enroll request

Enroll button on the main window will be shown if enrollment is active for the company and will be

enabled when all tests are passed. It will open a RAS connection if required, so be sure that SIM card is still

present to allow internet connection such in “GPRS connection” test. Once connected application will place

an enroll request on the OTA server that will be examined by a supervisor before finally enroll it. Until

supervisor has completed enroll process, new enroll request can be placed renewing the last one. Once the

enroll request is successfully completed a request ID will be sent to the mobile terminal; this code will be

prompt on the screen and will be printed on the tests report that will be frozen to the enroll request time.

The identification code will be the reference to the request placed on the OTA server.

2.7 About form

Clicking on the Digitax logo on the main form a simple About form will be show. It contains the core, UI and

tests libraries versions and the global OFT application version.

On the same window can be present a Remote assistance link button: tapping on it the device will be

restarted in an always-connected mode showing the terminal IP address which will be used by the Digitax

staff to access remotely to the terminal.

3 OFT tests list

The OFT application is completely modular so the tests list can be customized for each installation. A tipical

tests-set could contains the following tests.

Please note that the tests panel layout could be different depending on the testing device.

3.1 System versions

Reads all the underlying system versions and in detail:

Device’s hardware ID

AITP firmware version

Operating system version and build

CPU version (from OS)

This test is only for information purposes; the read data will be stored into the enroll request report.

3.2 Touch screen

Checks the correct calibrations of the touch screen. If the calibration is not so good the installer can

perform a better calibration.

3.3 Tester name

Gets the installer name and a password.


Afterwards the central software could accept the enroll request validating the provided password.

3.4 Taxi CAB info

Gets Taxi Cab Info like car name, plate and other useful info.



3.5 Engine input

Checks the correct connection of the mobile device with the ignition input sensor from the vehicle. The

installer has to follow the instructions on the screen turning on and off the key when requested.

3.6 Alarm button

Checks the correct connection and operation of the alarm button. The installer has to press (usually) 5

times the alarm button installed on the vehicle.


3.7 GPS receiver

Checks the proper operation of the GPS receiver. Test will wait for 10 consecutive fixing sentences from the

receiver.

3.8 GPS AGC

Checks and pre-measures gain values that the GPS receiver applies to its antenna: performs a self

calibration of GPS AGC parameters (useful for system diagnostics and anti-tampering). The installer has to

follow the instructions on the screen attaching and detaching the GPS antenna. The result of this test can

optionally be forced to proceed with the enrollment in case of a non-optimal installation. The central will

be notified of the forced result giving a warning on the system installation.


3.9 GPRS connection

Checks the correct operation of GPRS modem, SIM card and network, developing an internet connection

and a trial http download from the net.

3.10 Car and UPS Battery

Checks the status of car-battery and device backup battery by reading voltage values. The installer has to

switch on the engine when requested.


3.11 Odometer with GPS

Checks the correct operation of the odometer comparing the number of pulses received, together with the

speed shown by the GPS receiver. The test makes a pre-valuation of the odometrical constant counting the

pulses from the odometer sensor and comparing them with the speed registered by the GPS receiver. This

test has to be performed on the road; the installer has to drive the car at the indicated speed when

requested.

3.12 Ambient light sensor

Checks the proper operation of the ambient light sensor on the monitor verifying the correct installation of

the monitor.


3.13 Keyboard

Checks the proper operation of hardware keys and LEDs. The installer has to press repeatedly each

hardware button to test their response. This verifies the correct installation of the monitor.

3.14 Roof light (flag) input

Checks the correct connection of the roof light status sensor with the device. The installer has to change

taximeter status when requested.


3.15 Sygic navigator

Checks the proper installation of the Sygic Navigator, check the map installed and the product licensing

configured on the system.
