ISDN Defined

• Known as the Integrated ServicesDigital Network

– Data, audio, image and video transmission

• It is a switched digitaltelecommunication line that can be

delivered over regular copper wires– Possible to provide end-to-end digital

communications

Page 5: Digital Services ISDN.ppt

ISDN Application Examples

• On/off ramp to the information super-highway to communicate at speeds of128 Kbps for a single ISDN line

– Multiple ISDN lines can be combinedtogether to achieve higher communicationspeeds

• Home use– On/Off ramp to the Internet

• Business world

– Provide remote access to LANs

.

ISDN Standard

• There is a national ISDN standardknown as the NI standard

• It is being implemented in phases

• Current implementation is termed asNI-1 to indicate that it is in phase 1 ofthe implementation process

ISDN Connections

• Can be obtained from a local telephonecompany in the same way an analog

connection is obtained

• Phone companies offer different typesof ISDN connections

 ISDN Services

• Bearer Services• Three types of bearer services are available for a call. They include speech, 3.1 kHz audio

(for modem data), and 64 kbps digital data.

• Bearer services are specified by the calling user in the call setup message and are transferred over thenetwork to the called user. The exchanges within the network also use this information when selectingthe appropriate outgoing trunk. In the case of speech, exchanges can use analog or digital trunks forinterconnection, whereas 64 kbps digital data requires digital trunks.

• Teleservice This service enables the calling user to specify the type of dataservice for 3.1 kHz audio and 64 kbps digital data. The teleservice information (fax, telex, and so on) is transmitted transparently across the network to the called user. The called userprocesses the information to select the appropriate terminal equipment (TE) function toterminate the incoming call.

• Supplementary ServicesThe ISDN service offering also provides

many supplementary services. These services also are typically found on PBXs and virtualprivate voice networks. The following are examples of supplementary services:calling lineidentification (caller ID), closed users groups, call waiting, user-to-user signaling, advice ofcharge, call forward, and call hold. When a user requests these services, supplementaryservice messages are sent to the network to invoke the requested processes. In the case ofuser-to-user signaling, the two ISDN users send signaling information transparently during

the call setup and teardown parts of the call.

ISDN Service Connections

• There are two different types of ISDNservices that are widely available

• One is known as the Basic RateInterface or BRI

– Used for home or SOHO connection

• The other is known as the Primary RateInterface or the

– Used in large businesses

In Summary

• ISDN is a switched digital network

• Can be used for establishing a point-to-point digital connection

• BRI and PRI

– Number of B Channels vary in each case

• B channels can be combined together toachieve a higher communication speed

Channels in BRI Service

• B channels are known as bearerchannels

– Carry information

• D channel is known as the Deltachannel

– Used for signaling purposes

• 2B + D channel service

Page 18: Digital Services ISDN.ppt

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/digital-services-isdnppt 18/35

The B Channel

• 64k bps per channel

• The two B channels can be inversemultiplexed or boded together

– Achieve a maximum aggregatecommunication speed of 128 Kbps

Page 19: Digital Services ISDN.ppt

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/digital-services-isdnppt 19/35

The D Channel

• 16 Kbps

• Entire bandwidth is not used forsignaling purpose

• Excess of 9.6 Kbps is available forpacket switched data transmission

applications

• Excess bandwidth usage

– Climate control, security alarm system etc.

In Summary

• BRI is the basic ISDN service

• Composed of 2 B channels and a Dchannel

• B Channels are circuit switched

• D Channel is packet switched

– Excess capacity can be utilized for packetswitched applications

PRI Service

• More sophisticated service comparedto BRI

• PRI service offers 23 B channels and 1D channel

Page 23: Digital Services ISDN.ppt

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/digital-services-isdnppt 23/35

Properties of B Channels in PRI

• Each B channel operates at a speed of64K bps

• The B channels are used for carryingdata

• B channels can be combined together to

increase the aggregate communicationspeed

Page 24: Digital Services ISDN.ppt

Properties of D Channel in PRI

• Each D channel operates at a speed of64 Kbps

– Considerably faster than the D channel inBRI

• 23 B channels share a D channel for

signaling purpose

Page 25: Digital Services ISDN.ppt

PRI Channel Delivery

• PRI channels are delivered over a T1line

• T1 speed

– 1.544M bps

• Aggregate speed of PRI from all 23 Bchannels and the single D Channel iscomputed as follows:

– 23 * 64 + 64 + xx = 1.544 Mbps

Important Features of the PRI Connection

• Communication links can beestablished between:

– remote computers and this LAN

– this LAN and remote locations– this LAN and other remote LANs

• Link is established using a powerful

router• A separate DSU/CSU unit is used as

opposed to the NT1 network terminator

used in the case of BRI

• ISDN routers– Ascend and Cisco are sample

manufacturers

– Ascend Pipeline 50 and Ascend Pipeline100 are examples of such routers
