MBO – Cut / Stack Finishing
When flat sheets are the goal, MBO provides asolution for common 1-up & 2-up sizes. Thissolution produces standard 8.5” x 11” and 8.5”x 14” letter sheets, and standard 20” x 14”sheets that most commercial printers use intheir shops today. With the addition of aslitting module, this same line can produce
3-up & 4-up products such as post cards. Asalways MBO’s Modular Finishing Lines are aninvestment in the future. The concept allowsfor growth into folding products, dynamicperforating, dynamic scoring, web plowing, sheet plowing, fold and glue, split and mergethat lead to enhanced final products.

MBO – High Speed Letterfold Finishing
The High Speed Letterfold System is the coreconfiguration of MBO’s Digital FinishingPlatform. It is the most widely used roll to foldsolution in the commercial print market. Thedesign concept integrated the capabilities ofthe wildly successful MBO buckle folder to theweb finishing market. The result was a systemthat can adapt to any format letter, 1-up or2-up, with or without chip-out, in newsletter orstandard layouts. Folder trims, scores, glue
application and gatefolds are possible. With amaximum web speed of 824fpm, 4” to 80”cutoff capability, and low labor requirement, there is no better way to fold paper from a roll.As always MBO’s Modular Finishing Lines arean investment in the future which allows forgrowth with dynamic perforating, dynamicscoring, web plowing, sheet plowing, split andmerge for greatly enhanced final products.

MBO Case Study - Cutting-Edge FinishingYOUR HIGH-SPEED PRODUCTION INKJET BUSINESS ISN’TCOMPLETE UNTILYOU UPGRADEYOUR FINISHING DEPARTMENT
While every company uses the term “solutions provider,” this is not just a buzzword for SPC. “Our mission is to help our customersincrease their response rates with direct mail campaigns,” explains Ryan LeFebvre, Executive Vice President of Sales for SPC.
SPC has invested in a wide array of resources from inhouse design to data development and programming to the most cutting-edgeprinting and nishing solutions. It oers high-speed inline web printing; inline and four-color hybrid imaging with variable print inblack, full-color, or PMS; digital and oset sheetfed printing; and most recently, high-speed inkjet printing. SPC is known for morethan ink on paper. It transforms its clients’ direct marketing into a “rich, multi-sensory experience” that delights all of the senses.
But its real expertise is data. Data, programming, and printed components converge awlessly before its mail pieces enter the postalstream. SPC’s sta of programmers and lettershop specialists put its clients’ data into action via variable imaging. Its secure facility, with on-site postal verication, Optional Procedure, and Drop Shipment Management System (DSMS), is designed to give clientspeace of mind.
“We do a lot of market research, too,” says LeFebvre. “We pay attention to what’s in people’s mailboxes. We research what’s pulling well. We’re always looking for that secret sauce to help our customers increase their response rates and return higher ROI.”
HIGH-SPEED INKJET CHANGES EVERY-THINGBefore its purchase of the high-speed inkjet,SPC supported its customers’ needs for highvolume, complex variable data work with high-speed sheetfed digital printing, as well as highlycustomized inline hybrid manufacturing. ehybrid line uses four-color inkjet imaging headson SPC’s six-color web oset presses with inlineUV coating.
e hybrid workow is highly eective forshort-run projects or those for which the vari-able elements are concentrated in localized areasin the sheet, such as when customers want to switch out company logos or oer fully variable coupons. However, over time, SPC’sclients started to demand a higher level of exibility and design on their long-run projects than its hybrid line could accommodate.“Our clients want to be able to produce fully variable color across the entire sheet,” explains LeFebvre. “We were able to oer that onour sheetfed presses, but not at the kind of very high volumes its clients oen produce.”
To meet this need, SPC installed two Canon Oce´ i300s high-speed cutsheet inkjet presses and, in early 2018, a Canon Oce´ ProS-tream Web Fed Inkjet Press. e ProStream runs at 262 feet per minute (80 m/min) at 22” (565 mm) web width, which meets the de-mands for fully exible, full-color variable design at the highest speeds. With a high-capacity duty cycle of up to 35 million A4 pagesper month, the press is built to meet SPC’s customers’ needs for both speed and volume.
“As our customers make deeper investments in fully variable, heavily data-driven pieces, they are looking for wider variety of nishesto separate their pieces in the mailbox,” says LeFebvre. “We needed a partner that would give us the high-quality nishing capabilitieswe needed at speed.”
SPC knew where to turn—MBO. e company was already operating MBO folding equipment, so it knew MBO’s quality and reliabil-ity. “We turned to them to help us identify which pieces of equipment would provide the most exibility for our clients’ needs,” saysLeFebvre.
VALUE-ENGINEERED INVESTMENTBecause of the range of applications it produces, SPC appreciated the modularity of the MBO Finishing System. By grouping specicmodules together, MBO was able to customize a nishing system that met the needs of this highly exible company. “When you do alot of custom work, you can’t just pick a high-speed nishing system ‘o the rack,’” says LeFebvre. “You must carefully analyze yourneeds and select the right mix. You also need the exibility to move equipment around on the line, if necessary.”
Aer careful consideration, MBO and SPC decided to install a “Nearline” nishing system model. is allows for maximum uptime of the press, and economies of scale for the exible nishing line. e line included the core nishing components for the web:Unwinder UW60, Web-guide WG60, Web Plow-folder PFS, Split & Merge Unit SPM and, at the heart of the line, MBO’s SVC525CSheeter with a speed rating of up to 250 Meters/Minute. e core nishing portion of the system gives SPC all the power it needs tosheet the product and pass it to the exible nishing components at the end of the line.
e exible part of the line is where the magic happens.By combining modules such as DFT 6 Plate BuckleFolders, HH381 Cutting/Perng/Slitting Tables, HH850High Speed Transfer Units and Compression Deliver-ies, SPC is ready to produce products that get attention.SPC can now produce products that t the customers’needs rather than forcing the design of the customers’marketing pieces to t a non-exible nishing system. With the system from MBO, SPC can now nish nearlyany popular mail size product — letterfold size andup — including direct mail, letters, postcards, signa-tures, brochures and other commercial products. eMBO line was installed in early 2018 to compliment theinstallation of the Canon ProStream press.
In particular, the modularity of the MBO line gives SPCthe freedom to switch out pieces of equipment to meetthe always changing demands of its projects. is trans-lates into higher productivity. “is allows us to run many dierent congurations with fewer touches and quicker job turn around,”says LeFebvre. “e modular nature of their equipment also means that we will be able to add additional nishing capabilities downthe road.”
MBO now has robust, 24/7, modular components from nearly all ofthe MBO Group and its partners to give its customers far reachingcapabilities. e most dramatic impact comes from the MBO GroupHerzog+Heymann Division, specialists in high speed specialty nish-ing equipment such as card tipping, heavy stock, gluing, scoring, per-ng and more. SPC looked at other competitors and felt the equip-ment oered was not exible enough for what they needed. “MBO’sline was more robust and allowed us the ability to oer a one-stepproduction line,” says LeFebvre.
WHERE EXPERIENCE MATTERSDuring the installation, MBO’s expertise and outstanding customerservice really paid o. “Our current nishing employees were knowl-edgeable about the letter folding and traditional bindery nishing, but they were not familiar with near-line plow folding and inlinenishing that came with the new line,” explains LeFebvre. “Togetherwith MBO, we were able to overcome any issues and achieve a highlyecient process.” LeFebvre adds that MBO’s training was importantduring the start-up, but that expertise became even more importanton the return visits. “At that point, we knew the questions to ask, andit helped us to trainothers,” LeFebvre explains. SPC’s nishing capabilities may haveexpanded, but it is by no means done with its nishing investment. It plans to add new capabilities to the modular system over time.“When we do, we love that MBO equipment will ‘plug and play’ withour existing line,” LeFebvre concludes.

MBO – Modularity And The “Parking Lot Concept”
The MBO Group’s modular approach to finishing gives digital
printers several unique advantages. Because MBO offers
separate but compatible modules that are mobile, rather than
one-size-fits-all solutions, the finishing solutions from MBO
can come in all shapes and sizes to produce an infinite number
of job applications - they are not fixed solutions locked in for
one type of production, they are interchangeable modules!
This creates a Mix-and-Match finishing department that allows
printers to meet customer needs on a true 1:1 basis rather than
offer cookie cutter solutions that may not meet customer needs.
The Parking Lot Concept is one particular business model that
takes full advantage of MBO’s modular approach in a digital
print environment. At the core of the Parking Lot concept is the
unwinder and sheeter. With this core in place, a printer needs
only to purchase the modules necessary for a given job (i.e.:
letterfold requires a folder and delivery). This model is also
ideal for printers who expect growth because adding modules
to the Parking Lot is a much more cost effective investment
than purchasing entirely new solutions. Furthermore, once
numerous modules are on hand, a printer needs only to roll
modules into place to create one-step finishing production
systems. The result is a tremendously flexible and efficient
finishing department that can produce a wide range of products
and can meet some of the toughest on-demand deadlines
which are commonplace in today’s event-based, time-sensitive
marketing strategies.
Benefits of the Modular Approach:
Tremendous flexibility to meet customer needs 1:1• No cookie-cutter solutions
