Digital Media, Culture and Education MA /

The Digital Media, Culture and Education MAexplores the theory and practice of media insociety, with a particular focus on education andemergent new literacies in the digital age. Theprogramme combines theory with practicalopportunities for media production. Students willcritically examine new developments within digitalmedia and work with partners including the BritishFilm Institute (BFI).

 Degree summary 

This programme provides the opportunity to explore different mediaforms, media education, media literacy and related fields. It combinestheory with practical opportunities in moving image production, Internetcultures and game design. Students will critically examine developmentsin the fields of new media, including the impact of new technologies oneducation, and debates about the place and purpose of media insociety.

// This programme will equip students with skills, knowledge andexperience related to the rapidly-changing worlds of digital media,culture and education. It will therefore support career developmentin a variety of media contexts, including educational settings,broadly-defined.

// Students are able to work with the BFI, our partner for part of thecourse, as well as leading researchers from the DARE Collaborative,a research partnership focussed on the digital arts in education ledby UCL Institute of Education (IOE) and the BFI.

// The course is based at the UCL Knowledge Lab, which conductsresearch, design and development across a broad range of media,systems and environments and brings together researchers from theareas of education, sociology, culture and media, semiotics,computational intelligence, information management,personalisation, semantic web and ubiquitous technologies.

Teaching is delivered by face-to-face lectures and seminars, practicalworkshops combined with online-learning. Students are assessed bycoursework assignments of up to 5,000 words, plus practical work forsome modules, and a 20,000-word dissertation or 10,000-word report.

 Degree structure 

Mode: Full-time: 1 year; Part-time: 2 years; Flexible: up to 5 years

Location: London, Bloomsbury

Part-time and flexible students will usually attend for intensive full-dayseminars, with other work completed online.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programmeconsists of two core modules (60 credits), two optional modules (60credits), a dissertation (60 credits) or a report (30 credits) and anadditional optional module (30 credits).

DISSERTATION/REPORT

// All students undertake an independent research project, which culminates in adissertation of 20,000 words or a report of 10,000 words. Either the dissertation or thereport can be part-production based, in which case the production element replaces50% of the wordcount.

 Your career 

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broadrange of areas. Some are working as teachers in primary, secondaryschools and further and higher education, while others have jobs aswithin areas related to digital media. Graduates can also be foundworking as museum and gallery education officers and in other informallearning spaces.

Employability

The course provides students with skills relevant to media work in a widevariety of employment contexts, including education, museums andgalleries, social media, cultural organisations. It provides experience ofdigital media production relevant to these contexts, but not professionalproduction training for the media industries.

 Entry requirements 

A minimum of a second-class UK Bachelor's degree in a relevantsubject (e.g. media studies, cultural studies, art, education, digitalmedia, interactive media, English. Applicants with a minimum of asecond-class UK Bachelor's degree and at least one year's experiencewithin the fields of education, media and /or the cultural industries willalso be considered.

English language proficiency level

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, youwill be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level ofEnglish proficiency.

The level of English language proficiency for this programme is: Good.
