Digital India Week Events/Activities in
South West Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya

District Level Event:
A) Mawkyrwat, Multipurpose Hall, DC’s Office Complex:
The 1
st Digital India Week 2015 was celebrated at Multipurpose Hall, DC’s Office Complex,
Mawkyrwat by the DC's office of South West Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya with great zeal
and fervour. The event was chaired by Km. Dali Kharshiing, MCS, Extra Assistant
Commissioner, and District Nodal Officer for Digital India Week of South West Khasi Hills
District.
The Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of the Government of Meghalaya Shri Rowell Lyngdoh
graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of the event with Smt. Ripnar Lyngdoh, IAS,
Deputy Commissioner South West Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya as the Guest of Honour.
All District Heads of Offices, South West Khasi Hills District were also invited and several
were present at the event along with a huge gathering of students and teachers from
different schools and colleges of the District and DC office staff. The programme included
the following events:
Registration of participants: The event started at 9:30 AM with the registration of all the
participants where the participants provided their details. More than 250 participants were
registered. All participants received a Digital India Brochure.

all the guests and participants with an
introductory speech.
Introduction to Digital India: Shri. Rajib
Bhattacharjee, District Informatics
Associate, National Informatics Center
District Unit, Mawkyrwat gave a brief
introduction to Digital India Initiative of Govt.
Of India and Digital India Week explaining
the visions, goals and implementation
methodology of the initiative. He
emphasised that the need of the hour for the
public is to be aware and socially active in learning and use Information and Technology for
the betterment of the society.
National Anthem: The Singing of the National Anthem by everyone was led by the
Students of Sngap Syiem College, Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills District.
Speech by Chief Guest and Guest of Honour: Smt. Ripnar Lyngdoh, IAS, Deputy
Commissioner South West Khasi Hills District spoke on the importance of Information
Technology in our day to day lives. She informed the gathering about the e-Governance
plan envisioned by the Govt. Of India, under the leadership of our Hon’ble Prime
Minister Shri Narendra Modi. For that, she stressed on the right usage of Information
Technology by students. She discouraged them to misuse IT, since it would be detrimental
to the growth and development of the society as a whole.
Shri Rowell Lyngdoh, Deputy Chief Minister Govt. Of Meghalaya being the Chief Guest of
the occasion, spoke on the importance of Information Technology and the use of digital
gadgets in our daily lives. He was informed the gathering about the smart classroom
initiatives taken by the IT Dept. & North Eastern Council for promoting quality education in
schools. He also stressed on the use & misuse of technology for our self interests. He
stated that technology should be applied for the development of the society & not for
criminal purposes. He closed his speech by inaugurating Digital India Week at the District
level.
Digital India Film: The Digital India Film
Compiled by Govt. Of India was shown to
the gathering on the screen. The film and
its importance were then explained in brief
by Shri. Rajib Bhattacharjee, District
Informatics Associate, National Informatics
Center District Unit, Mawkyrwat.
Cultural Program: The cultural programme, included Traditional Dance performed by the
Seng Nonglang. Everyone was mesmerized by the performance of the group and
applauded graciously. The other performance was a self composed song by a local artist on
Digital India Week. Cultural Programme was followed by refreshments for all.
Presentation by Resource Person: After lunch break, two back to back powerpoint
presentation were presented. Shri Rajib Bhattacharjee, DIA, NIC District Unit, Mawkyrwat
talked about the topic “Digital Literacy and its Importance” in an interactive presentation
session. After the presentation, Shri. Kevin G. Khyne, District IT Manager, DRDA South
West Khasi Hills District, discussed about “Digital Hygiene” with a well designed
presentation. Students from all schools including teachers and District Officers actively
interacted and participated in the session with thought provoking questions and ideas.
Poster making competition: A poster competition was organised for the students on the
theme “Digital Literacy & Cyber Hygiene”.
More than 15 teams participated in the
competition from different schools and
colleges. The posters were evaluated by a
panel of two judges consisting of Km. D.
Kharshiing, MCS, EAC and District Nodal
Officer for DIW, and Smt. Shelley Ch.
Momin, MCS, EAC South West Khasi Hills
District on the basis of originality,
creativity, design and relevance of the
idea. 3 winners were selected who were awarded certificates and cash prizes. The prizes
were handed over to the winners by Shri,. B. K. Syiem, District Horticulture Officer, South
West Khasi Hills District.
Prize Distribution and Vote of Thanks: Prizes and Honorarium were distributed to the
students and resource persons which was concluded by a vote of thanks by Smt. Shelley
Ch. Momin, MCS, EAC South West Khais Hills District.
B) Inauguration of Smart Class Room at Maharam Govt. Higher Secondary School:
After the conclusion of the district level event Shri Rowell Lyngdoh, Deputy Chief Minister,
Govt. Of Meghalaya and Smt. Ripnar Lyngdoh, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, South West
Khasi Hills District and the other district officials gathered together at Maharam Govt. Higher
Secondary School for the inauguration of the smart class room in line with Digital India
Week Celebration. The students of Maharam Govt. Higher Secondary School and the
teachers were present at the event. The event began with a speech from the principal of
Maharam Govt. Higher Secondary School followed by speech from Shri. Rowell Lyngdoh,
Deputy Chief Minister, Govt. Of Meghalaya, and Smt. Ripnar Lyngdoh, IAS, Deputy
Commissioner, South West khasi Hills District. In their speech, both of them emphasised on
using the power of technology appropriately for the benefit of the people. Smt. Ripnar
Lyngdoh also quoted that “With great power, comes great responsibility”. Students were
inspired by the oratory speech given by both the dignitaries. The speech was followed by
inauguration of the smart classroom and a brief demonstration of the working of the smart
classroom devices by the computer teacher of the school. The program ended with vote of
thanks from one of the senior teachers of the school followed by light refreshments.

Closing of Digital India Week at District Level
C) Inauguration of Tablets, Wi-Fi & Projectors at Nativity Higher Secondary School:
The event started at about 11:30 AM at Nativity Higher Secondary School Auditorium,
Mawkyrwat. The Chief Guest for the event was Shri. S. Nongkhlaw, District School
Education Officer, South West Khasi Hills District and the resource person was Shri Rajib
Bhattacharjee, District Informatics Associate, NIC District Unit, Mawkyrwat. The class 11
and 12 students of the school were present at the Auditorium hall along with the teachers.
The program began with a welcome speech by Rev. Father Roland, the Principal of the
School in which he welcomed both the Guests. The speech was followed by a brief
introduction to Digital India and the Uses of technology in education system by Shri Rajib
Bhattacharjee. Briefly after the speech Shri S. Nongkhlaw discussed about the importance
of technology in education and its merits. Students were very inspired by the oratory speech
of Shri. S. Nongkhlaw. He then launched the tablets, projector and the Wi-Fi amidst huge
applauses from the participants. It was followed by a quick practical demonstration by Shri
Rajib Bhattacharjee on how to use the devices by showing the students some slides from
the subject Microeconomics. He also educated the students on internet browsing and
projecting the information on the projector screen. The events ended briefly after that with
vote of thanks from Rev. Father Roland followed by light refreshment for all.
