Raster Graphics

• Raster graphics are made up of pixels, formally known as bitmaps. Raster graphics take up a lot of storage spaces and can distort easily meaning that images may not stay the same once saved and bitmaps may become pixelated if the image is made bigger.

Vector Graphics

• Vector graphics are made up of vectors/paths, they are made from a defined start and end and uses curves, points and angles. A path that is a line can be adapted into a curvy shape. Vector graphics have an advantage over bitmaps and vectors will not lose quality.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image? This was the first image I created by using shapes on photoshop. I like the image as it is simple yet you are able to understand that the image is a dog although it is created as if it is quite childlike and there is not much detail to the image.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I were to improve this image I would pay more attention to the detail and I would ensure that the shapes are more detailed within the body of the image so that it looks a bit more realistic and more professional rather than simple and childlike.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I really like the detail of this image and how clearly it shows that it is a rotoscoped version of Johnny Depp. I like the fact that the image shows Johnny Depp as if he is a cartoon and I also like the fact it doesn’t look really realistic and life like instead it looks more as if it has been posterized or as if it has been created for a comic.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I was to improve this product I would pay more attention to the details on his face and I would also work on the hair as a lot of it has been missed out as it was hard to work on the detail of it and work out the different strands.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like this image as creates an instant representation of the word CAT through the use of the image. The image creates a some what mysterious outlook on the image, which also helps to represent the word CAT as it links in with the idea of cats being superstitious and crafty. The image and the green shadow also help to create a bold statement and makes the image appealing to the audience as the eyes seem as though they are looking directly at you which makes it more likely to get the audiences attention.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I were to improve this image I would experiment with more than one word and I may also experiment with other images and use a variety of effects.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like this image as it clearly shows what the logo is supposed to represent by the use of the printer and the newspaper coming out of it, to show what print based media is and you get the idea of it straight away. I also like the detail of my logo as it makes the image clear so it is easy to understand especially for someone who is not aware of what print based media is about.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I were to improve my logo I would make it more interesting and appealing to the audience. I would do this by adding more colour and perhaps adding an image such as a magazine, newspaper or model.

Content

A T-shirt design inspired by the film Donnie Darko. I have decided to focus on the characters Frank and Donnie Darko, I will use dark colours to represent the darkness of the film. However in some of my designs I may consider interpreting the film in a more enjoyable way through the use of cartoons and jokes.

Does your final product reflect your original intentions?

For my designs I took one aspect of my original idea which was to focus on the film Donnie Darko, from this I chose to represent the character of Frank in which I came up with six ideas involving images of the rabbit in different ways. I then picked on of my ideas for my final design and tried to improve it by adding different affects and changing the colours. This meant that I was sticking to my original ideas however I adapted them to make improve them and to make them more suited for a t shirt design. I also kept to the idea of making the character look dark and mysterious to represent what the character is supposed represent in the film which is death, darkness and evil.

Page 33: Digital graphics pro forma

Is your product suitable for your audience?

I decided to make my product for an audience who are fans of the film Donnie Darko, who are fans of the character Frank and also for people who are interested in the darkness and mystery of the product. I believe that my product is suitable for my target audience as it has kept a direct focus on the character Frank and the audience are able to tell straight away what it is and that it is taken from the film Donnie Darko.

Audience profileAge – 18Gender – MaleLikes – dark films, fan of donnie darko, fan fiction, trippy filmsThis person is suitable for my product as they are stereotypically the type of person who would like the film Donnie darko and choose to wear a tshirt that looked dark and creepy to represent both the film and to also represent the type of things they are interested in.

What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used?

I have used a variety of different techniques on photoshop when designing and making my product such as rotoscoping and experimenting with different shapes and effects. I liked using the rotoscoping tool as it meant to could get an exact match of a shape and make it look much more realistic. However, I also disliked some aspects of the rotoscoping tool, as the lines were not always perfect therefore missed some of the image or shape and sometimes it is quite frustrating to use when it doesn’t work correctly. I also really liked experiementing with different effects such as posterizing and black and white, as it made my image more suitable to what it represents by making it look darker and more mysterious. However I disliked some effects such as the invert effect as it changed my image dramatically and some effects were difficult to reverse.

Page 35: Digital graphics pro forma

What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks?

I really how my final product looks as it shows clearly what it is supposed to be but it is a fairly unique version of frank, showing him almost as if he is demon like. The thing I dislike about how my product looks is that it is fairly dark which makes it limited to the colours the design can be worn on or with and the look of my design may also limit my audience.

Page 36: Digital graphics pro forma

Why did you include the content you used?

I included the image as the image helps to show the characters personality. The cut off edges and ragged fur helps to present this as it represents a dark figure and may represent different aspects of darkness such as death .

I chose to use dark colours again to represent the darkness of the character and it automatically shows that this character is villainous however he is also idolised not as a character but as an image, and people easily recognise him.

I used the posterize effect to make the image look more cartoon like. This helped to make the image more unique and I also didn’t want it to look too realistic so it showed Frank in a different way. It also helped to make the image look a lot darker.

I set the default tshirt to black to put my design on as I think that black on black with other dark colours works really well and it creates a bit of contrast with the lighter colours and again enhances the darkness of the image.

What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning

The planning and research helped with my designs as it showed me what designs were already out there and also gave me a lot of inspiration for my own design. Another strength of pre-production is that you can work on a variety of different designs and improve designs so that my final design was produced to the best of my ability.

A weakness of pre-production and planning is the fact that I got fairly carried away with it producing lots of different designs instead of just improving one. Another weakness is that inspiration may lead to copying someone elses design.

Page 38: Digital graphics pro forma

Strengths and weaknesses of my product.

I feel that my design works very well at representing the film Donnie Darko and the character Frank. I have used a variety of techniques in my designs and I have experimented with different effects within the project. However, seen as though I have only stuck to one particular idea taken from the film I have been limited to my designs, if I were to improve my product I would try using other aspects of the film such as memorable quotes, numbers and other characters. I would also experiment with other colours as although the idea of my product is to make it look dark and mysterious, it might look good if I counteracted the idea and made it bright and colourful which would present the character of Frank in a different light and make him represent good instead of evil.

Peer Feedback

“The colours work really well together and help with the representation of the image”

I agree with this statement as my idea was to make the image look dark, spooky and mysterious and I did this by using dark colours such as grey and black.

“The image is too dark and scary”I disagree with this statement as it supposed to be that way, to represent the

character and show what he is like. This will be picked up on by my target audience which is who it is aimed at.
