Graphic Narrative Evaluation

Page 2: Digital graphics evaluation

Use this template to help you evaluate your project.

You should give specific details about your work.

You should provide both written and visual examples to explain your project.

You should find areas to praise in your work. Be specific about why you think they are good or why you are proud of them.

You should also find areas that could be improved. Look for areas that you could make better if you went back to them. Be specific about what you would improve.

Add additional slides as you need to. Don’t be restricted by what is here.

Any blank slides should be deleted before submission.

Does your final product reflect your original intentions?

• Compare your planning/digital flat plans/ storyboards to your final product•From the beginning of my plans I already had an idea in my head of what I was going to do, though I did have some other ideas I remained with my original idea as I had put the most thought into it and how I would produce it.

• Over all the all of the planning work looks very similar to my final productwith the main difference being the amount of detail, the planning was a very basic construction of how I was going to lay out the pages and getting the feel of how to create the pages.

The flat plans I created are a very basic representation of my final product and they also gave me an idea of what I should include in my story, since they were not the final product I could experiment and see what would work best in the story.Though in the end I had settled with what I had put down on my mind map and I think it worked out alright in the end.

How well have you constructed your images?

• How well have you constructed your images? You could talk about the overall visual appearance and well as the use of texture and colour.

• The images that I have made are fairly basic, most of the assets that I made are block coloured and made from basic shapes, although this doesn't mean that the results were that bad as you can still make out which character is which.

• There is a range of colours that have been used with the most common colours being used for characters being grey and red and the backgrounds included blacks, purples and a light shade of red. •I think that my backgrounds and scenery were created with better results than my characters were. The nebulas that I made were created using the Gaussian Blur effect, this was the best effect to use for creating the nebula as the blurred effect it gave off was the closest looking effect that made an object look like a nebula.•There are some gaps in the joints of some of the characters but it is not that noticeable

How well have you used text to anchor your images

• You should talk about the combination of words, images and text.

• I chose to have the text white with a black border as you can see this combination on top of any colour, the font that I have used is also very easy to read with no fancy letters and the font size is just right to be able to make out every word clearly. This combination works well in my book as the background changes brightness between each of the pages and this saved me from having different coloured text on each page.

Is your product suitable for your audience?

• Reference your proposal• Give an audience profile and describe suitability in reference

to content• I said in my proposal that my target audience was for children between the ages of

4 and 8 years old and I still think that my product is suitable for this audience as in my proposal i said that there would a wide range of colours and I think that I managed to include a large range of colours.

• Young readers hopefully be able to read what I wrote down clearly as I picked an easy to read font with a suitable colour and I have not used any complex words that a child would not know the meaning of.

What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used?

• Reference specific tools you used with images• To create the nebula I used the Gaussian Blur tool, this was

fairly easy to use as all I needed to do was select the shape I was going to create the Nebula with and go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and from there I just dragged a slider until I got a result that I was happy with putting in my book.

What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks?

• I like the backgrounds on the first and second page as I think that those background bring out the page more and add more depth.

• I think that the style I made the book in is alright, the characters could've been made a bit better and with a slight improvement to the design of them.

Page 9: Digital graphics evaluation

Why did you include the content you used?

• Images, fonts, effects, colours•I chose the colour of the text to be white with a black outline as you can

read it no matter what colour is underneath it, I used this combination because if the text was a different colour there could have been a difficulty reading it on a page with a dark background, such as page 2 and since the text would be a different colour there would be an inconsistency with the colouring of the text.

What signs, symbols or codes have your used in your work?

• Choices of colour, style, locations, character design and tone all give additional meaning to your work.

• I gave the protagonist, Red riding hood, a red space suit as in the original she wore a Red cloak and since my book is set in space she would be wearing a spacesuit so I made it red to show that the person in the red suit is Red Riding Hood.

Audience ResponsesCultural competence:

Media texts require us to have a certain level of cultural understanding to be able to interpret them.

At a basic level, this could mean being able to read the language that a magazine is written in.

At a deeper level, it means being able to interpret signs and symbols that we use a visual shorthand to communicate ideas.

We recognise these signs in our own culture but find it harder to understand when looking at others.

We create and attach meaning to signs and symbols in many different forms.

Audience ResponsesCultural competence:

What is this?

This is a Norwegian Pine tree, covered in snow and with a red ribbon on.

Our cultural understanding allows us to interpret its meaning.

To us, in British society, it means Christmas, presents and family.

This is because we share a cultural knowledge.

Audience ResponsesCultural competence:

There are many other signs and symbols that we attach meaning to.

A leather jacket can imply rebellion.

A sports car can imply wealth and power.

A cross can represent religion.

Audience ResponsesCultural competence:

Visual representations of everyday objects are often the same the world over. A car appears as a car, no matter what country it appears in.

What that car means however, can be very different depending on your cultural background.

What representations can be found in your work?

• How are men, women or children shown in your work? Does your work feature different ages, races, social groups or religions? Does a lack of any variety of character types create its own representation?

My book has a female lead character, the wolf is always referred to as ‘wolf’ when they are mentioned, in the original story the wolf is male.

There is no mention of religion in my story as I am not religious myself and if I did include anything religious I may be incorrect about what I would of put down and this could cause backlash with people who are religious.

What style have you employed in your products?

• Discuss influences/ existing products• What visual style does your work have and why did you choose it?• The visuals of my work are very basic and there is not that much detail present but

i think that this style fit well with the theme and since it is a children's book they will not be looking out for large amounts of detail within the illustrations.

• The assets that I created are all original and I used no references while creating them.

• The only influence that I used in the making of my book was the storyline of the original Red riding hood as the ideas I had for a story would not have worked out due to them not being child friendly.

Page 17: Digital graphics evaluation

What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning

• The planning did help me out at the start as I had a few ideas I wanted to do and in the planning phase I expanded on some of these ideas. Since I had multiple ideas written down if one did not work out I would still have something to fall back on.

• A weakness of the planning is that I only expanded on some of the ideas I had meaning if none of the ones I expanded on didn’t work out I would of had to spend more time thinking about what I would be doing.

Page 18: Digital graphics evaluation

Historical and cultural context

• How does your work compare to what has come before? What other similar products have existed in the past? What current products exist?

The original Red Riding Hood story was set in the past with Red as a young girl who travels through a forest to deliver a basket of food to her sick grandmother and on the way there she encounters a wolf who tricks red into straying of path so he can get to the gran's house and eat them both.In comparison to the original story, there are similarities: the base storyline with Red making a delivery to her grans, meeting a wolf who tricks her. But there are also differences such as the setting the story takes place in, my story takes place in space and Red is a space ship captain and instead of going through a forest Red goes through a nebula. The only other product that I could find that was similar to mine was a stop motion video on youtube, the video is similar to my product as this also is set in space but rather than having Red in a spaceship she is on the moon and encounters a green space wolf.
