Digital Finance
Employment Survey 2019
Thank you for downloading our 2019 Digital
Finance Survey. Our research has been compiled
from around 650 respondents as well data from open
vacancies, to provide a quality guide to employment
trends within the financial ERP, EPM & Analytics
markets.
Finance leaders have told us it is harder than ever to
find relevant skills for a new digital era. We hope our
insight will help clients and job seekers make the right
decisions when planning recruitment.
PointView Resources has been part of the financial
ERP, EPM & Analytics community for over 10 years and
has always had an advisory focus on this specialist
market, and a commitment to excellent customer
service. It is what makes us unique and a trusted
recruitment partner for CFO offices across many
industries worldwide.

Digital Finance Landscape
CFO’s are hiring for a new set of skills for the modern digital era. Finance has moved from a back-office function to a forward looking strategic partner. As a result, accounting candidates must embrace new skills such as data science and analytics and develop soft skills in influencing and strategic thinking to stay ahead in the labour market.
There are also more vendors in the market
than ever before. When planning a digital
transformation, CFO’s have a wide choice
alongside the traditional vendors such as
Oracle, SAP and IBM. We are seeing increased
demand for candidates to work with
OneStream, Anaplan, Adaptive Insights in
the EPM sector and Netsuite and Workday for
operational ERP systems.
The talent gap within digital finance has never
been wider. Demand for resources far exceeds
supply and available candidates with the right
skills for a new digital era are scarce. Salaries
are steadily increasing.
Although there is uncertainty about Brexit,
employment in the UK and Europe is still at
a historical high which is why recruitment
continues to be the number one headache for
finance executives.

Experienced Sales Managers with a track record of navigating
complex enterprise deals can command premium rewards
Solutions / pre-sales is a viable career option for strong consulting
professionals. The ability to model products to show business value
and deliver excellent demonstrations is highly sought after
Business Development is an excellent entry into technology sales.
High potential individuals with drive and energy are in demand,
particularly candidates with finance understanding.
We are seeing an increased demand from vendors for Customer
Success professionals who can cross sell and increase user adoption
of products to an existing account base.
Point of View: Focus on sales
The technology sector continues to grow, and the digital finance market
is no different. Software vendors, many with investment backing, are
looking for sales talent that can help build a customer base. Here are
some of our observations:

Market TrendsWe recognise that salary reward is just one aspect of the recruitment process and so each year we take a look at other trends which are having an impact on the digital finance job market. Candidates must monitor market developments to keep their skills relevant and employers must also follow the trends to ensure they remain competitive in the race to attract the best talent.
TREND
01FINANCE SYSTEMS & THE CLOUDOur survey found that 76% of respondents are now running
finance systems in the cloud. Concerns about data security
have largely disappeared and and cloud systems have become
mainstream. Technicians are encouraged to skill up on the main
cloud infrastructures such as AWS, Microsoft Azure and IBM Cloud.

02AUTOMATION AND JOB SECURITY
Automation does not present a fear to our survey respondents, in fact the
opposite: most stated that automation will create more job opportunities
within finance systems and many said they were confident they had the right
skills for the digital finance era.
said they were not concerned about the effect of automation on long term job security
It was interesting to observe how our respondents were gaining this
knowledge. Many said that current employers did not invest enough into
training the new skills required in a digital finance world and most were
building knowledge through their own efforts and self learning.
are confident they have the right skills for the new digital finance age

TREND
03INNOVATION, TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT
Over 60% of our respondents said that innovation and working with the
latest generation of technologies were the most important factors in their
career, above salary and benefits. Yet 35% of our survey received fewer than
5 days training in the last year and 41% received none at all.
Innovation, working with next generation technology
Earning the right salary and rewards
Flexible working
Are you doing enough to promote innovation and retain talent?
9
TREND
04COMMON REASONS FOR LEAVING
THE FIVE MOST COMMON REASONS CANDIDATES WERE DISSATISFIED IN THEIR POSITION WERE:
Poor management
Unrealistic travel commitments
Inflexible working arrangements
Salary & rewards not competitive
Lack of innovation, working with out-dated technology
The world of work has changed significantly and the factors that contribute
to an unhappy workforce have changed accordingly. When approaching us,
candidates are expressing dissatisfaction with factors unrelated to money
and reward. More often, candidates will seek a move if they are working on
out-dated technology, a trend that has become more significant as we enter
the new digital finance environment. Candidates also seek flexibility and
autonomy especially in more senior positions.
10
TREND
05CULTURE & VALUES
Candidates, especially those from the millennial generation, look at employers
very carefully before joining. Creating a business with the right culture and
values is vitally important when you want to attract the best talent.
We asked our survey respondents to tell us what was important to them in a potential employer, allowing multiple choices:
87% A company that respects and looks after its employees
72% Being alongside like-minded and dynamic people
53% Working for a successful and profitable company
11
SUMMARY
Our survey has again uncovered that innovation, training and company culture are the most important factors digital finance professionals consider when reviewing their career options. Salary and rewards are important but play only a small part in today’s digital finance job market.
Finance systems experts are acutely aware of the importance
of working with the latest technology to keep their skills
competitive in a rapidly changing technology landscape, yet
many businesses are not doing enough to train and develop
employees.
In such a competitive market it is vital that CFOs and employers
put training and development at the top of their priority list to
attract the best talent in the new digital finance age.

PointView Resources has partnered with
CXO Software for many years, adding great
value in our resourcing in both Europe
and the US, due to their extensive EPM
expertise and network. The growth of CXO
software could not have been realized
without their professional support.

We have drawn from our 650 survey replies as well as data from some 250 vacancies we worked on last year, plus external positions posted in the overall market, to present one of the most accurate benchmarks for salary levels across financial ERP and EPM/Analytics. These have been broken down by sector and are split between the UK and the Benelux region.
Enterprise, or Corporate
Performance Management
(EPM / CPM) systems have been
around for many decades but the
sector has seen something of a
resurgence. Vendors are making
systems accessible to users in
other operational areas away from
finance. These initiatives are driven
by finance however, and so EPM /
CPM experts must understand wider
strategy and operations to be true
business partners.
Vendors such as OneStream
Software and Tagetik, which deliver
a single integrated platform for
close and consolidation, connected
planning and reporting, have
grown rapidly and become strong
alternatives to the larger vendors
which offer complicated multi-point
solutions.
The cloud has made performance
management systems accessible
to all businesses - small and
medium sized as well as enterprise
customers. Pure cloud vendors
such as Anaplan, Host Analytics and
Workday, through their acquisition
of Adaptive Insights, are now
significant players.
We recommend consultants and
administrators look to diversify
skills into new technologies.
True experts with a hybrid skill
set of functional accounting
and technology who can deliver
business value with EPM systems
are in high demand and can
command high rates compared with
peers with only accounting or IT
skills.

Financial management technology /
ERP is a more mature category than
EPM and the market has largely
made the shift from on-premise
to cloud. The category has been
shaken up in the last five years and
we are seeing growing demand
for candidates skilled in newer
technologies such as Workday
Financials, Netsuite, SAP S/4 Hana,
Financial Force and SAP Business by
Design.
Cloud allows customers flexibility
and a faster time to gain value in
their digital transformation. There
is more emphasis on end-users
managing financial management
applications and less reliance
on IT staff. Finance candidates
are at the forefront of delivering
business value through digital
transformations and so must
diversify their skill set into strategic
thinking, influencing and business
partnering. Projects are also now
more often delivered using an Agile
methodology.
Keeping up with the latest
functionality as financial ERP
vendors constantly release new
features has become a challenge
for finance systems professionals.
Administrators must adopt a new
cycle of learning, business analysis
and release-testing on a constant
basis.
In their report analysing the
financial management industry,
Gartner identified lack of skills as
a challenge across all major ERP
vendors. They advise caution due to
the shortage of resources available
to implement and support new
digital systems.
