higher level apprenticeship
The Hyper Island Digital Apprenticeship is a Higher Level Apprenticeship; a high-quality training and development programme for 18 year olds and over, offering a Level 4 qualification (equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree) in Interactive Design & Development.
This apprenticeship was designed by Hyper Island in collaboration with a range of local Manchester-based businesses. As a result, the programme structure addresses the needs of the employer to recruit and train Junior Developers and Junior Interaction Designers that will make a positive impact to their business.
What is a higher level apprenticeship?
Less so
“Many employers in the sector are struggling to recruit staff with the necessary
skills and competencies, and are now choosing to employ apprentices and train young
people on the job instead.”
- Tony Foggett
CEO, Code Computerlove

meet the apprentice
The Digital Apprentice programme doesn’t just give you relevant skills, knowledge and experience but puts you at the front of digital innovation.
I’m a Front End Developer and since joining the Digital Apprentice programme I’ve been a part of some of the most challenging and amazing projects - and I’m only 19. My day-to-day job usually involves me drinking an awful amount of coffee, having a laugh with the rest of the team while jumping across a variety of different projects.
As an apprentice I have the freedom to pursue my interests so if there is a particular project I’m interested in or a framework, plugin or library that’s being used, I have the freedom to jump in and do some development work.

hyper island methodologyThere are no teachers at Hyper Island. We take an experiential approach to learning and apply this in two distinct, yet connected parts; the content and the process, or “what you do/learn/experience” and “how you do/learn/experience it”. We invite leading industry experts to bring their experience from ‘the field’ and Hyper Island supports learning through the application of tools, methodology and facilitation.
formatThe Digital Apprenticeship is designed to give apprentices maximum time within the work environment, working on live projects to support learning in a real-world context. However, they are also supported with ongoing mentoring and development throughout the programme at Hyper Island.
