Melbourne 2030

•State Government strategy for sustainable growth of metropolitan Melbourne to the year 2030.

•Seeks to encourage higher density development into strategically important centres and new urban fringe development in nominated growth corridors.

•Protects ‘green wedges’ of Melbourne (including rural areas and small communities) from inappropriate development and urban encroachment

Urban Growth Boundary

•Growth management tool introduced through Melbourne 2030 in 2002

•Requires support of both houses of parliament to be moved

•Areas outside UGB considered to form part of the Green Wedge

•No clearly defined review process yet established

• Council resolved to seek Ministerial Authorisation in February 2008 to prepare and exhibit Amendment C63 to the Melton Planning Scheme

• The amendment involves changes to the Melton Municipal Strategic Statement, and the introduction of a UGB

• Once the UGB has been defined, a detailed Precinct Structure Plan would need to be prepared to guide future development

• Formal authorisation from the Minister for Planning sought in June 2008
