’Diggers turn weather into advantageBY BILL FOLEY

of The Montana Standard

Weather has probably messed with theMontana Tech spring football schedulemore this year than ever.Snow-covered and wet fields havekept outside practices few and far

between for the Orediggers.Still, Tech coach Chuck Morrell said he has turned

that into a positive.“The fact that we’ve had some extra meetings has

actually been beneficial to us,” said Morrell, Tech’s 36-year-old first-year head coach.

Morrell, who came to town after years as the defensive coordinator at Sioux Falls and the Universityof South Dakota, is installing a 3-4 defense that is radically different than the scheme Tech ran the past24 years under coach Bob Green.

Offensive coordinator Ted Schlafke is also installinga brand-new offense.

So, the Orediggers used the down time for meetingsand walk-throughs in the gym.

“We can go over (the new schemes) a number oftimes with the guys, then get on the field and rollthrough it,” Morrell said. “I think it’s been an advantage for us. When you’re installing somethingnew, that’s half the battle.”

Morrell has also used the time to show his new players films of some of the defenses that were part ofa Sioux Falls team that went 56-1 from 2006-2009.

“Our offense is going to be absolutely brand new. There’s no film on our offense,” Morrell said. “We’regoing to be multiple — pro style, but multiple. Weshould be balanced. It should be pretty diverse.”

Saturday, Oredigger fans will get a chance to see thenew-look Orediggers. Well, kind of.

Tech will hold a “parents’ day” during practiceSaturday in conjunction with the annual Orediggerauction.

Parents of players have been invited to attend practice. So have members of Morrell’s first recruitingclass.

The practice, which will last about 2 hours, will

begin at 1 p.m. at Alumni Coliseum — if the field isplayable.

Other options include the HPER Field and LeonardField on campus, and the old baseball fields behind theButte Civic Center, where the team has spent most ofits outside practices before Saturday.

“We’ll do a fairly normal practice schedule, but wewill have quite a bit of scrimmage time toward the lasthalf of practice,” Morrell said. “Saturday will be thefifth time we’ve been on the field, so we need to dosome practicing before we get into our scrimmage.”

Despite the little time on an actual football field,Morrell said several players have already made animpression.

The coach singled out DDrreeww WWaalltteeee, MMaatttt SSttuuddyy andKKeeiitthh MMuullllaann as leaders of the Tech offensive line.

“DDrreeww WWaalltteeee is coming back as a fifth-year guy. Atthis point he’s done some tremendous leadershipthings for us,” Morrell said. “MMaatttt SSttuuddyy’’ss had a good

spring so far, and KKeeiitthh MMuulllleenn has also done a greatjob for us.

“We feel like we’ve got some key guys down therethat we can build around.”

The coach also said he’s excited about what he seesfrom running backs PPaatt

HHaannsseenn and JJuussttiinn SSmmiitthhand receiver CCaallMMccQQuueeaarryy..

“He’s just been veryimpressive,” Morrell saidof McQueary, a fifth-year senior from Butte.

“You can’t possibly out-work the kid. He’s putting

out an outstanding effortlevel. He’s also quick, he runs

great routs and isaggressive.

“CCrraaiigg HHaallkkoo is anotherreceiver who is having a

great spring for us. We feelreally good with our first set of receivers out there.”

Another one of those top receivers is TTrreenntt TThhoommaass, the Deer Lodge product who was all-conference as areturner last year.

“I’ve compared him on film from last year to wherehe’s this spring,” Morrell said. “He’s really improved asa wide receiver.”

JJaammeess RRoobbeerrttss, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, is also working out at safety after turning heads with his athleticism at defensive end last year.

“He just runs as well as anybody on our team,”Morrell said. “We feel there’s the opportunity for himto create mismatches for opposing defenses, plus he’sgot experience playing wide receiver in high school. Wejust want to get him on the field.”

Who will be throwing the ball to those receivers isstill up in the air right now.

Morrell said he is impressed with sophomores BBrriiaann SScchhwwaarrzzkkoopphh and NNiicckk BBaakkeerr..

Three members of Bob Green’s 2010 coaching staffwill be a part of the 2011 Orediggers.

Doug Schleeman,Skippy Sims and ScottSampson will coach alongside first-year head coachChuck Morrell.

Schleeman’s return wasannounced shortly afterMorrell was hired.

The former Tech offen-sive coordinator will serveas the assistant head coachwhile working withreceivers and tight ends.

Schleeman, the team’srecruiting coordinator, alsoplayed a key role in landinga solid 2011 recruiting class.

“He’s really doing agood job organizing ourrecruiting,” Morrell said.

Sampson will be coaching the offensive linefor the 12th season.

During that time hecoached two All-Americans and 13 All-conference players.

“He’s got a great rela-tionship with the guysfrom coaching them a longtime,” Morrell said.

Sims, who is coachingthe outside linebackers, isentering his second season

The coach probablywon’t pick his starter untilsometime in August.

“Right now it’s prettywell balanced with thoseguys. Both Brian and Nickhave an understanding ofthe offense,” Morrell said.“Those guys need about athousand reps apiece. That’s when we’re going tosee the battle shake out alittle bit.”

The Orediggers have a small senior class. Fivereturning seniors — CCoonnnnoorr OO’’NNeeiillll,, KKeevviinn SScchheeyy,,LLooggaann LLeeddggeerrwwoooodd,, DDaanniieell CChhaannddlleerr aanndd MMaarrccuussJJoohhnnssoonn — will likely start on defense.

“Kevin Schey has got a tremendous amount of gameexperience, so I think we’ll definitely be able to lean onhim,” Morrell said of the senior linebacker.

The coach said outside linebackers O’Neill and JJooeeSSeemmaannsskkyy are nice fits for his defense.

“Both of those guys have the ability to pressure thequarterback for us,” he said. “I think that’s a vitalcomponent that we’re looking for.”

JJooee HHiicckkeeyy and MMiikkee TToouuzziinnsskkyy are inside line-backers Morrell said have some real potential.

Johnson, the nose guard who had surgery after playing through an injury-filled 2010 campaign, is justgetting back into the swing of things. He missed theentire winter conditioning program.

“He’s just really working back into it,” Morrell said.“He’ll be a tremendous asset for us there at the nose. He’s a very vocal guy. He’s always positive and pullingguys in the right direction.”

The rest of the defensive line is pretty young.CCoorreeyy EEiisseennzziimmeerr, a junior from Dillon, moved to

defensive end from offensive line. MMiikkee WWaallddmmaann, asophomore from Butte, is also looking good at thatposition, Morrell said.

Ledgerwood and Chandler are looking good at cornerback. Hard-hitting cornerback JJoorrddaann HHeerriinnggeerris still out from injuries sustained last season.

“We’re looking forward to, at some point, getting

Jordy back,” Morrell said. “DDaann CChhaannddlleerr and LLooggaannLLeeddggeerrwwoooodd,, both those guys have a lot of playing timeand have a lot of ability at corner. LLuukkee SSeeuubbeerrtt hasreally had a very strong spring at the cornerback position.”

Dillon’s JJaakkee MMccGGiinnlleeyy looks to be a lock to start atone safety position.

“JJaakkee MMccGGiinnlleeyy has really stepped up,” Morrell said.“We’ve got a lot of guys working out at safety.”

One of those players is Nathan Kobold, who is making the move from linebacker to safety.

Several players are switching positions this spring.Morrell said that’s because each player had a clean

slate with the new coaching staff.“I tried not to watch too much film on them,”

Morrell said. “I wanted to let them go through ourspeed and weight training and do our evaluation. Iwanted our staff to take a fresh look them.”

Morrell will continue evaluating his players throughthe spring game, which is set for April 30.

The Orediggers will open camp in early August.Tech will play its first three games at home, starting

Aug. 27 against Southern Oregon.

Morrell said he wasimpressed with Sims’move from player tocoach.

“That’s always a toughtransition to go throughwhen you coach at theplace you play. I wentthrough the same thing,”Morrell said. “You’ve gotto create a level ofrespect and some separation there, and he’sdone a good job of that.

“It goes back to his reputation as a player.”Ted Schlafke was brought in to be the offensive

coordinator, while B.J. Campbell is the special teamscoordinator.

Morrell is the defensive coordinator. He saidCampbell, who will coach linebackers, is his “right-hand man.”

Campbell is also in charge of strength and conditioning.

The players have already gotten to know him verywell.

“He came in and did an outstanding job,” Morrell said of Campbell, who earned a masters degree in exercise science and athletic administration from theUniversity of South Dakota.

“We’re high intensity. We’re not in there for a long time. He did a great job.Guys really responded well.”

Former University of Montana defensive lineman Lance Spencer is now a student at Tech. He’ll coach the defensive line.

“He’s got a lot of great playing experience, and he’s got some great ideas thathe’s bringing to the table,” Morrell said.

New rules on drinkingduring the season

BY BILL FOLEYof The Montana Standard

Coach Chuck Morrell has made several changes to the Oredigger program since being named head football coach at Montana Tech.

One change will affect the night afterthe games.

Drinking alcohol or going out to barswill not be allowed during the footballseason.

“If we’re going to be able to move theprogram to where we want to have it,team-wise we’ve got to be focused onwhat we’ve got to do to win,” Morrellsaid. “To me, (drinking) doesn’t have alot to do with winning.”

In recent years, players were allowedto drink alcohol or go out to bars only onnights after a game.

Morrell said several factors led to hisdecision to keep the team dry during theseason.

“When game day rolls around, wewant to be at our absolute peak. There’sa lot of science that goes along with allthis stuff,” Morrell said. “For the guyswho are focused on what we want to do,I don’t think it will be a big deal becausethey’ve put so much time into whatwe’re doing and what they’re putting

into their bodies. They’re physicallypreparing every week.”

The new coach also said the policy isin the best interest of his players.

“If you watch ESPN, there’s some-thing that pops up every single day,”Morrell said, pointing to problems related to alcohol and partying.“Literally every single day somebody isgetting suspended or kicked off the teamor something like that.

“Obviously part of the college aspectis having fun,” Morrell added. “I under-stand that completely. But also, what isour ultimate goal here? Are you focusedto be part of our ultimate goal?”

Coach Chuck MorrellOn Dec. 20, 2010, Chuck Morrell was officially

named the new head football coach at Montana Tech.Morrell comes to Tech from the University of

South Dakota, where he served as the defensive coordinator in 2009. Prior to his stint at USD, Morrellcoached at the University of Sioux Falls from 1998-2009, where he served as the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

During his time at Sioux Falls, the Cougars playedin five NAIA national championship games, winningthree titles (2006, 2008, 2009). From 2006-2009, the Cougars were themost dominant program in the NAIA, with a record of 56-1 — their only loss in that span was in the 2007 national title game.

Morrell had the number one overall defense in the NAIA in 2006, 2008and 2009. His 2008 squad posted 7 shutouts and allowed 144 total yardsrushing over the entire season.

Morrell has coached in 31 NAIA playoff games. As a player at SiouxFalls, he was the leading tackler on the 1996 NAIA Division II nationalchampionship team. Coach Morrell posted 44 All-Conference and 11 All-American defensive players while at Sioux Falls.

Morrell is a native of Tyndall, S.D., and is married to Jen. They have twodaughters, Selene and Aleia.

As a player and coach, he wasa part of 227 total wins, 6 Big West ConferenceChampionships, 7 post-season appearances (including 4in the NCAA “Big Dance”), and 7 post season victories.

THE COACHAaron started his coaching career at Santa Cruz High

Along the way, Aaron saw Pacific rattle off 22 wins in a row and advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament after beating a tough Pittsburghteam, 75-71.

Aaron’s final season at Pacific saw him add yetanother Big West Conference Championship ring to histrophy case, as they went 23-12. During the 2009-10
