When the Lights Go Out……it’s Too Late to Clean Your Tanks

Most Emergency Power and Engine Performance failures start inthe Fuel Tank and are caused by the inherent instability of fuel.

Fuel degradation is a natural process that causes the formation of sediment, tank sludge and acid. It starts at the refinery and continues until the fuel has been used. Heat, pressure, temperature changes, water and microbial contamination accelerate the fuel breakdown process.

The mandated use of biofuels has caused a dramatic increase in fuel re-polymerization. This is causing rampant filter plugging, fuel injection system failures and a significant reduction of stored fuel shelf life.

Advancements in engine and injection system design demand perfect fuel. However, changes in fuel production methods combined with the use of biofuels are seriously endangering engine performance and the reliability of critical power. Traditionally, the solution has been to periodically replace stored fuel and clean tanks. This is a very expensive and partial solution at best.

Most engine failures start in the tankDiesel engines take more fuel out of the tank than is needed for combustion. Fuel is continuously cycled from the tank through filtration and separation to the engine, returning most of the fuel back to the tank. In 24/7 applications, one would think continuously moving fuel would result in spotless tanks, but this is not the case.

Monitoring fuel integrity is an essential part of all fuel maintenance programsFuel degradation is an unavoidable, costly, natural process, until we implement adequate fuel quality maintenance equipment, effective “housekeeping” and a fuel sampling and testing program. In every tank, fuel will continuously deteriorate forming sediment and acid. This process cannot be stopped by simply using filters and a separator. The installation of AXI Fuel Conditioners and Fuel Optimization equipment is the only way to assure fuel integrity at all times.

Fuel deterioration and microbial contamination result in an expensive loss of product in fuel storage tanks and negatively impacts engine and generator performance and reliability. Implementing a fuel quality sampling, testing and monitoring program is a must because hospitals, data centers, telecommunications and first responders require a 0% failure rate to eliminate liabilities and loss of life.

The National Fire Protection Association states in NFPA 110 Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems that: “fuel maintenance and testing should begin the day of installation.”

AXI Fuel SamplerThe Sample Thief or “Bacon Bomb” takes samples from storage tanks. The device has a plunger assembly which opens upon contact with the tank’s bottom, or when opened with a tripline if a mid-tank sample is desired. Upon withdrawing, the plunger seals tightly to contain the fuel sample. Available in plated brass or stainless steel in 4 oz., 8 oz. and 16 oz. sizes.

The Fuel Sampling Pump KitAn excellent tool to easily obtain fluid samples while keeping your hands clean. The kit contains a Hand Pump and uses flexible 1/4” tubing and see-through treated bottles. The pump protects against cross contamination by drawing fluids directly into the bottle and can be used for fuels, oil, hydraulic fluids, coolant, water and other liquids.
