Osnabrück’s political andcultural life believes in

the maxim: “The task of peace– committed to peace”. After 5years of negotiations the”Peace of Westphalia” thatended the Thirty Years’ Warwas proclaimed on the steps ofthe Town Hall in 1648. Sincemore than 60 years local chil‐dren commemorate this event

every year with a hobby horse parade.

Nowadays, people still come together where merchantsused to meet in the old days:The “Markt” remains the heartof the city and hosts weddings, festivals, wine stands andChristmas markets. Its pictur‐esque flair is formed by theTown Hall of the Peace of West‐phalia, the "Stadtwaage" (cityscales), St Mary's Church andthe high gables of the old mer‐chant houses. Just a few stepsfurther, you will be impressedby the late Romanesque cathe‐dral (St Peter's Cathedral).

From 1412‐1669, Osnabrückwas a member of the “Hanse”(Hanseatic League), the mostimportant trading alliance of itstime that brought great statusand wealth to its membercities. These days, the old trade

routes turned into pleasantstreets with attractive shops. This mixture of historic quar‐ters and modern architecture isthe hallmark of Osnabrückwhose status as a universitycity (almost 25,000 students)completes its long history ofEpiscopal power. The young, top flight university, the techni‐cal college with its popular in‐ternational study programs andthe German Federal Environ‐ment Foundation (DBU), locat‐ed in Osnabrück, are all impor‐tant factors for the creation ofan innovative climate.

Osnabrück is popular for be‐ing compact. Whether for sight‐seeing, shopping, strolling orstudying – a good layout andshort distances are a plus for allguests.

Moreover Osnabrück(158.000 inhabitants) is veryfortunate to be located in themiddle of a nature reserve. With 1,220 square kilometersthe UNESCO Geo Park

Around 780, Charle‐magne, king of the

Franks, erected a stone churchon the banks of the Hase Riverthe nucleus of today’s Os‐nabrück. The city’s name is presumably a combination ofthe Low German words “Os‐sen” (ox) and “Brügge” (bridge).

As a hub of old trading routesand as the seat of a bishop, Os‐nabrück developed into a

thriving center for commerce inthe Middle Ages. In 1157, Em‐peror Frederick Barbarossagranted the city its fortificationprivileges.

Most of the towers that werepart of the medieval fortifica‐tion are still visible in the city. From 1412‐1669, Osnabrückwas a member of the “Hanse”(Hanseatic League) as well as amember of the WestphalianFederation of Cities.

Magnificent town houses andother prestigious buildings bearwitness to the power andwealth of the medieval mer‐chants.

Osnabrück became importantduring the negotiations for thePeace of Westphalia that tookplace here as well as in Münsterbetween 1643‐1648. The Peace of Westphalia, proclaimed inOctober 1648, finally ended theThirty Years’ War and changedthe face of Europe.

Müns ter as a venue, the Protes‐tants resided in Osnabrück. As aresult of this time Osnabrückwas alternately ruled byCatholic and Protestant bishopsuntil 1803.

Osnabrück became widelyknown amongst literaturelovers through the works of oneof its own sons, Erich Maria Re‐marque (1898‐1970). The ErichMaria Remarque‐Peace Centerdedicates an exhibition to hislife and literary work.

Another of the city’s natives isFelix Nussbaum. The artist wasborn in 1904 in Osnabrück anddied in 1944 in Auschwitz.

The renowned architect DanielLibeskind designed the FelixNussbaum Museum as a specialplace for Nussbaum’s artisticwork. The architecture of thebuilding is intended as ”roomsagainst oblivion” and captivatesvisitors by its unusual interiordesign.

Town Hall of the Peace of WestphalianFinished in 1512, the TownHall in late‐gothic style tookmore than 25 years to build.Just like in neighbour Münster, the Peace of Westphalia wasnegotiated here, ending theThirty Years’ War (1618‐1648).Inside the hall, 42 portraitsshow the envoys of the peacecongress as well as the rulers ofthat time. The most valuablepieces in the treasure chamberinclude the Emperor’s Cup, the

replica of the Treaty of West‐phalia, and the Osnabrück mili‐tia’s necklace. Also to be seenon the upper floor is a modelwhich shows Osnabrück in1633.

Old TownnThe Market Square and thesurrounding old town is defi‐nitely worth a visit with its halftimbered houses and vaulthouses from the middle ages.Good place for a short rest: The“Bürgerbrunnen” (fountain), il‐lustrating important events ofOsnabrück's history.

St Peter’s CathedralnSince its foundation byCharlemagne, the “Dom St. Pe‐ter” (St Peter’s Cathedral) hasbeen the religious center of thebishopric Osnabrück for morethan 1225 years. The currentarchitectural style dates back tothe late Romanesque period in

the 13th century. Exhibits thatcover a period of more thanone thousand years are pre‐served in the cathedral: e.g. thebronze font (1225), used forchristenings for almost eightcenturies or the Romanesquetriumphant cross. Also take alook at the tranquil cloister.

Felix NussbaumMuseumnThe museum, designed bythe New York architect DanielLibes kind, is home to the inter‐nationally renowned Felix Nussbaum collection. Like noother painter, his impressiveworks record the stations of his life, from the “happy child‐hood” in a Jewish merchantfamily, via initial artistic successin Berlin, to the despair of apersecuted Jew living in Belgianexile. The creative tension between architecture andpainting encourages us never to forget the Holocaust in Eu‐rope.

Osnabrück is a haven forall gourmets. This is not

only because Thomas Bühner, star chef of restaurant „la vie“(three Michelin stars) ranksamong the top 10 in Germany.Another refined address in thecity is the restaurant “Vila Real”at “Steigenberger Hotel Remar‐que”. The small, very stylishlyfurnished restaurant has beenawarded several prizes.

Those who like it more rusticwill enjoy one of the breweries.

The confectionery “Leysieffer”has been the first address forsweet treats for more than 100years. Speaking of tradition:The restaurant Walhalla is Os‐nabrück’s oldest inn. Fresh localingredients make a typical Os‐nabrück meal. In spring there is“Spargel” (asparagus), in winterthere is “Grünkohl”, served upwith “Kasseler” or“Grützwurst”.

There is culinary delight ofevery kind and for every tastein Osnabrück. Even more quali‐ty of life is brought into the OldTown by the lovely coffee barsand roasters.

The Varus Battle – Museum and ParkKalkriesenThe devastating defeat of the Roman legions under Varus inthe year 9 AD against the Ger‐manic tribes is legendary. Thevictory of Arminius was sup‐posed to be the beginning ofthe end of the long‐lasting

Roman Empire. Where and how exactly Arminius succeeded of‐fered a lot of speculations andmyths.

In 1989, the site nearKalkriese was discovered by archaeologists and the exca‐vation is still con tinuing.Nowadays, Kalkriese is oneof Europe’s most impor‐tant excavation sites.

The Varus Battle Exhibi‐tion, redesigned in 2009,allows you to experience

history and presents a current overview of the re‐search findings. The 24‐hectare park invites you toexplore. Top‐class special exhibitions, numerous
