Tax season is a great time for new resolutions. Each year thousands of people hurry around at the end of January trying to find all their receipts and invoices to at least make an attempt at bringing their affairs into order so they can finish their tax return.
In offices and homes across the country bins are being emptied, filing cabinets turned over and emails searched in order to find that last bit of information that will bring down the tax bill and leave a bit of money for a meal on Friday night.
And every year the same promise to yourself – next year I’ll file everything properly and keep a record every time I get an invoice or receipt.
I imagine this promise is broken by about mid-February!
There’s no need to do this though, keeping everything together in one place is really easy and for the small business or sole trader or even contractor that has only a few receipts each month, it could be as simple as keeping everything in a filing box or desktop organiser.
The key is to keep everything in one place and file it the minute you get it!
So many people think they can leave things in the bottom of their laptop bag and ‘do it later’ and then end up losing it.
Don’t let it happen to you!
Filing things consistently and carefully is essential to keeping your records in order even for the business owner.
It also means that if you have an accountant your year-end will be much quicker and therefore cheaper for him to complete if you hand him all your files rather than a plastic bag with loads of receipts in it!
