Our water comes from rivers, reservoirs and underground sources called aquifers. Rainfall keeps them all topped up providing us with the water we need. Why does every drop count?Pictures taken from space show our planet covered with blue oceans surrounded by swirls of white water vapour – this is our ‘water planet’.

We know that without water, there could be no life.

But did you know that only about 1% of the world’s water is fresh and available to drink?

What does ‘not enough rainfall’ mean?Dry winters can leave water levels in the region’s rivers, aquifers and reservoirs well below their usual levels. So that’s why droughts occur, even though it still rains from time to time. We have to wait for the winter rain to top up all the water we need.

5% rivers 50% surface reservoirs

45% groundwater: from seven major underground sources (aquifers) via more than 450 boreholes.

The water in our region comes from:

What does a drought mean for my family and me?We are all being asked to cut down on the water we waste so that we have enough water for all our needs, now and in the future too.

Where does our water come from? Our water comes from rivers, reservoirs and underground sources called aquifers. Rainfall keeps them all topped up providing us with the water we need. During a drought, for many months, there is just not enough rain to top up the sources.
