Honouring poetry as the highest art of life, Omilos Eksipiretiton (The Servers’ Society) presents a different and philosophical way to ana-lyse it, through poems by Cavafy and Sikelianos. Friday 25 September to Sunday 27 September - The Hellenic Centre Deities, Beasts and Beauty An exhibition of mythological puppets, hangings and clothes by East London Textile Arts, inspired by ancient Greek beasts and the Hellenic Centre’s Patterns of Magnificence exhibition (February 2014). East London Textile Arts has been running textile projects with diverse groups in Newham for over 7 years, exhibiting in local buildings and Central London; 50% of its work is with adults with learning disabilities. Cards, decorated papers, booklets, clothes and fabrics, all printed from the handmade tex-tiles, will be on sale. Free entry; opening hours 10am to 5pm. Fallen Angel, nominated for the Literature Awards by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus, is a powerful, sensitive and revolutionary novel, dealing with self-harm and the cru-elty or indifference that drives children to it. Sunday 11 October - The Hellenic Centre 1st London Hellenic Festival - @hellenicentre October has always been a turning point of life in London - moving to London to study, to look for a job, coming back from our native home to our real home. One way or another, October is the time when Greeks and Cypriots, students and professionals, new-comers and people who feel like Londoners need to get to-gether. This event, organised by Ark4Art and the Hellenic Centre, will include a bit of everything you need for a Sunday afternoon: food, wine, music, socialising, exchanging im-portant information and experiences, creating and strengthening our community ties. Thursday 5 November, 7.15pm - The Hellenic Centre Cyprus, the EU and the Eastern Mediterranean The accession of Cyprus to the EU in 2004, is the single most important strategic development in the country’s turbulent history since independence in 1960. Cyprus also became a member of the Eurozone in 2008 and it’s going through an economic crisis. In this lively presentation, the High Commissioner of Cy-prus, His Excellency Euripides L. Evriviades, underlines why both Cyprus and the EU are im-portant to each other and to the long term security, development and economic prosperity not only of the Eastern Mediterranean, but of the European continent. Tuesday 17 November, 7.15pm - The Hellenic Centre Jazz Democracy The Greek saxophonist Dimitris Vassilakis visits the Hellenic Centre, as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival 2015, for a performance and a talk in English. The talk will showcase how jazz, functioning as a universal language, can teach us ways to communicate in a more humane, democratic and creative way. Monday 16 November, 7.15pm - The Hellenic Centre Byzantine Cyprus A lecture in Engish by Prof Panayiotis Agapitos, University of Cyprus, on the aesthetics and function of painted inscriptions in the church of Panagia tou Arakos on Mount Troodos; the church and its paintings is a jewel of Byzantine art and the church is se-curely dated by a dedicatory inscription to AD 1192, the very first year of King Richard's I short governance of the island.
