DIARY OF A DAY OF SHOOTING – DAY ONE

Monday 18th March 2013

PREPARING

Firstly, we got a lift from my mum to Rosie’s house to

film the flashback scenes. Once we arrived we had to

wait for about 10 minutes for Rosie’s mum to finish

hoovering. During this time I got changed into my

costume and then had my make-up done. Once I was

in costume Sam took some pictures and then filmed

Rosie applying my make-up so that I looked more

fatigued.

ROSIE’S KITCHEN

Once the hoovering was finished we stepped into the kitchen to prepare for filming.

SETTING UP FOR THE FLASHBACK SCENES

First off we considered where to place the tripod and

how we were going to carry out the scene. We

decided to not have short, quick moments of

stabbing or blood but to have a full scene of me

committing the actual murder. However we had very

little fake blood and it stained clothes and I really

didn’t fancy spoiling my top. So the mother was not

actually shown on screen, instead I stabbed over the

camera – with a real knife… I was careful!

FILMING THE FLASHBACKS

We had a few rehearsals without filming because it turned out we

had low battery. After the stabbing scene we decided to use the

fake blood to cover the knife and show a pool of blood. Originally

we had ideas of just having a pool of blood or a shot of blood

squirting to the floor. In the end we decided to have the knife

covered in blood drop to the floor. However we quickly run out of

fake blood and had to use tomato ketchup instead! Amateur I

know but we plan on hiding this by making the flashback scenes

black & white so nobody notices.

DO WE CONTINUE?

Afterwards, we placed the camera on charge for a while to try and

maximise the battery power we could get whilst assessing whether or

not to shoot the playground scene today or wait until tomorrow

because it was raining. We weighed up the advantages and

disadvantages of carrying on tomorrow. The advantages were that we

could have better weather as well as more battery life. However the

disadvantages were that we’d have to reapply the make-up, leave

school again, the weather could be worse, would have to be really

careful in terms of continuity etc. So we thought it was best we film it

and get it out of the way.

MOVING ON TO THE PLAYGROUND SCENE

My mum text me to say she had finished work and if

we wanted a lift she’d be willing to take us. So I rang

her up and we packed up all our stuff and got a lift to

the playground on North Road, behind Sainsbury’s.

We setup our camera and tripod and planned what

we were doing. While Rosie and I considered my

position as well as the position of the camera, Sam

took some photos of the playground.

FILMING

Once we had decided positioning we began filming.

We started off with an establishing shot with a pan.

During this pan the camera shows me without the

mask and then when panning back shows me in the

mask. This would present the two personalities and

make the audience question what was going on.

Then we moved on to filming the conversation

between the two personalities.

PROBLEMS

I hadn’t learnt the script. So Rosie had to mouth my lines to me

and the camera picked up that I was trying to figure out what

Rosie was saying. Not only did this affect my acting and the

believability but it just wasn’t very good and we simply weren’t

happy with it.

So we decided to film me saying each individual line.

However there was an issue with us all laughing after making

a mistake and the increasing bloopers containing bad

language.

LOW BATTERY

This was when we realised how unprepared we were

because our battery life was running dangerously

low! We hadn’t followed the Year 13’s advice like we

should have and checked the battery. So we were

rushing to get through all the lines and managed to

finish with just ONE MINUTE of battery life

remaining!!!

END OF THE DAY

We hoped that would be it for filming and we could

move on to editing and have the project finished. But

when looking over the footage we had taken we felt

there was a lack of different camera shots and

angles and FAR TOO MUCH dialogue. So we had

another day of filming to look forward to.
