A VIEW TO THE FUTURE

Dear Families and Friends Well, what a great start we’ve had to term three! It’s really been fantastic seeing students last week immediately resuming their commitment to their learning goals and striving to improve. Term three traditionally provides such a great opportunity for students to build on semester one learning and extend their skills and knowledge in all curriculum areas. I’m really look-ing forward to a great term of learning.
Gratitude Gratitude is one of the three pillars of happiness along with empathy and mindfulness. I know I’m extremely grateful for the wonderful and generous community that we have here at Gembrook. An example of this happened during the week when we were presented with a huge box of new senior school fiction texts. These books were kindly donated by Mel Mullins who also spent hours in our library, sorting and covering books, as well as culling obsolete books and cataloguing new ones. Thanks Mel, your generosity is very much appreciated.
LED Sign Community Forum Last week I spoke to local businesses and residents along Main Road as part of our community consultation process in relation to the proposed installation of a changeable electronic school sign. I’m very pleased to report that the feedback I received was positive and supportive of our school and this community based initiative. We are holding a community forum at school on Wednesday 9th August commencing at 6:00pm and concluding at 6:30pm. Forum discussion will focus on the location of the sign, hours of operation and likely benefits to the school and wider community.
Congratulations Maddie! Huge congratulations to our grade six running star Maddie Bowden who last week finished 15th out of approximately 110 students from schools across Victoria in the State Cross Coun-try Championships. The hotly contested event was held at Bundoora Park and consisted of a gruelling 3km course. Great work Maddie, we are all so very proud of you.
Launching Academic Awards at Gembrook We are very excited to announce that from our next assembly, we are introducing assembly academic awards. At each assembly we are going to announce a:
Reader of the Week Writer of the Week Speller of the Week Mathlete of the Week
The four weekly winners will be presented with a fantastic
trophy that will remain with them in their classroom for one week. Winners will also receive a laminated certificate. This initiative reinforces our strong whole school commitment to provide an outstanding teaching and learning program, with a particular emphasis on literacy and numeracy.
Congratulations Beenak House! Congratulations to Beenak House, who were the inaugural winners of our new term house points competition. Weather permitting, members of Beenak House will enjoy a trip to JAC Russell Park on Friday 4th August for a special play session as a reward for their superb win. I’m really loving our weekly points updates at assemblies and I wonder which house will emerge the winner in term three?
Enrolments for 2018 Enrolment for 2018 at ANY level can be made NOW and I encourage you to share this with friends and families. Early confirmation of prep enrolments for next year will assist us greatly with planning in terms of staffing and grade structures. School tours are welcomed and can be arranged by contacting the school on 59 68 1313.
Our 2018 Prep Transition Program kicks off this term on Wednesday 9th August with ‘Step Into School Evening’ commencing at 5:15pm. The evening is a fantastic opportunity for 2018 Prep parents and students to come along and enjoy a comprehensive information session, as well as meeting fellow parents, students and staff.
3 Way Conferences Throughout this week, teachers have been conducting 3 Way Conferences. 3 Way Conferences provide an excellent opportunity for students to share reflections about their learning and their individual learning goals. Of course the opportunity for teachers, parents and students to discuss and share information relevant to learning is also vitally important. Thank you to our teachers who have provided flexible interview times during the week that have often extended into the evening.
Parent Opinion Survey 2017 We're conducting a survey to seek your important feedback about our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is completed annually by the Department of Education and Training and is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at every school in Victoria. This year, at Gembrook, 75 families will be invited to participate. The selection of families is randomly generated by computer and all responses to the sur-vey are anonymous. The survey helps our school gain an understanding of how you view our school climate, student engagement, and relation-ships. Our school will use the results to inform school planning and improvement strategies. This year, the survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes about 15 minutes to complete. It can be accessed from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August and selected parents will be notified with instructions on how to access the survey link.
The survey results will be sent back to our school at the end of September.
Please check out the ‘Diary Dates’ at the front of the newsletter for the many excellent events and activities that are coming up at Gembrook Primary School.
Have a great week everyone and all the best.

Hey kids
Here's the answer to last weeks riddle: In a one-story pink house, there was a pink person, a pink cat, a pink fish, a pink computer, a pink chair, a pink table, a pink telephone, a pink shower– everything was pink! What color were the stairs? A: There weren’t any stairs, it was a one storey house.
This was answered correctly by Charlotte Woehl of 5/6F Here's this weeks riddle: Q: Name four days of the week that start with the letter “t”? If you are the 1st to find me on Tuesday morning next week with the correct answer - You & a friend get to catch up with me Johnicles to play any game of your choice for half an hour during class time. This competition only lasts until the trivia night. So try your best to be the 1st in school to solve my riddle of the week. I'm wanting your parents & every grown up you know (psst including your teacher) to attend our annual Trivia night here on Saturday 19th August which is hosted by yours truly.
