ACTING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
FATHER’S DAY
The school wishes all dads a happy Father’s Day this Sunday. According to McCrindle Research, 20% of Australia’s population is made up of dads. There are approximately 4.6 million dads in Australia, with an estimated 2.2 million dads currently with children aged under 18. Of these, approximately 156,000 are single parent fathers, who look after 228,000 children, which averages at 1.5 kids for each single dad. ABS figures show that in Australia there are approximately 144,000 stay-at-home dads with dependent children. This means that of the 4.4 million dependent children in couple families where one parent is employed full time, 3% have a mother who is employed, while the father is not. There is certainly a trend of fatherhood becoming a delayed life stage, with the average age of a new father in Australia now being 33.1 years of age! The Northern Territory and Tasmania are home to our nation’s youngest dads, with the median age of fathers at 31.5 and 31.7 years respectively at the child’s birth. However, Victoria and the ACT have the oldest dads, with a median age of 33.7 years at birth. [Mark McCrindle is a social researcher with an international renown for tracking emerging issues, researching social trends and analysing customer segments.]
TREE PLANTING
Thanks to Peter Nash from Ecogen who donated his time to assist our Year 2 students with our annual tree planting days over the past two Wednesdays. Approximately 850 plants were planted at the back of the oval, beside the basketball courts and other garden beds around the school. Thank you to Mr Milgate, Mrs Ashburn and the other Year 2 teachers for their support with this.
SUNSMART POLICY
Just a reminder that our school’s Sunsmart Policy came in to effect this week for the remainder of the school year. Students are required to wear their hats from the 1st September, 2014 through until the 30th April, 2015 when involved in outdoor activities.
YEARS 3 & 5 NAPLAN RESULTS - 2014
Reports for parents of student achievements in NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) for Years 3 and 5 will be sent home with students tomorrow. The results arrived two weeks earlier this year and the school is very pleased with the overall achievements of our students. In next week’s newsletter I will provide some detail of the overall results for our school and some notable results of our high achievers.

MAGPIE NESTING SEASON
Magpie nesting season is upon us. The school has received a couple of reports of magpies swooping near the school. It is important to realise that not all magpies swoop, and the few that do, only swoop while chicks are in the nest – usually around 4 to 6 weeks.
A few tips to avoid being swooped are:
Stay away from the magpie area where possible, or
move through the area quickly without running.
If you walk through a magpie area, locate the bird and
watch it constantly.
Wear a hat and sunglasses or carry an umbrella.
Students who ride their bikes should dismount and walk.
If the magpie swoops you, don’t stop or crouch down.
Move on quickly but don’t run.
Recently there have also been reports of magpies swooping some of our students whilst riding their bikes to school. A possible solution to this problem is to try attaching a few cable ties on the bike helmets and have them sticking up. The cable ties can be purchased at Bunnings or Mitre 10.
For more information on living safely with magpies, call the EPA Wildlife Hotline on 1300 130 372.
