From the Principal…. Here we are, at the end of Term 3 and as we head in to Term 4 there is hint of sadness as it is our Grade 6 students’ last term at

Preston Primary. Many of them have been at Preston for seven years and while it is exciting to see them move on to secondary

school there is always sadness when we say goodbye to them. I hope they all take the time to enjoy their last term at primary school

and we can make it an enjoyable one for them.

CHILD SAFE STANDARDS

As you may be aware, all Victorian Schools, including Preston PS, have been working toward ensuring compliance with Ministerial

Order No. 870 regarding Child Safety Standards in Victorian Schools.

Preston PS takes a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse and is fully committed to ensuring that its strategies, policies, procedures and

practices meet all Child Safety Standards as specified in Ministerial Order No. 870 (2015).

Preston PS is fully committed to child safety.

We want our students to be safe, happy and empowered.

We support and respect all students, as well as our staff and volunteers.

We are committed to the safety, participation and empowerment of all students.

We have zero tolerance of child abuse, and all allegations and safety concerns will be treated very seriously and consistently

We have specific policies, procedures and training in place that support our leadership team, staff and volunteers to achieve

these commitments.

Wednesday Weekly

T-BALL FINALS

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of going with our girls’ T-ball team to the State Finals

at Jells Park in Glen Waverley. There were eight teams from various regions across the

state who had reached the state level. They had two pools of four teams who played

each other in the preliminary round then the top teams from each pool played in the

grand final. Our girls won all of their preliminary games and played Mount Clear in the

grand final. Our girls played a very skilful, competitive game however they were beaten

in the grand final.

I was very impressed with our girls’ sportsmanship; they were outstanding and did an

wonderful job of representing our School. It is a huge achievement to finish second in

the state and the girls should be very proud of their achievement. They were thrilled to

receive their silver medals. Thanks to Mary Kalogianis for coaching the girls and

Karen Jones for driving some of the girls to the finals.

GRADE 5 DEBATING

On Thursday some of our Grade 5 students went to Reservoir High to watch the

debating finals. During this term we have had a group of 8 grade 5 students who have

debated against other local primary schools in a competition run by the Reservoir

High Debating group.

On Thursday the topic was “Should children attend single sex school?” Our team

were the affirmative team and had some very compelling reasons why children

should attend single sex schools. Their opponents, Kingsbury PS, also had some very

impressive reasons why children should not attend same sex schools. Both schools

backed up their views with research.

At the end of the debate it was very close and I would have to say I was glad I was

not a judge. Preston ended up winning the debate by one point. They received

medals and our school name will be engraved on the perpetual trophy which remains

at Reservoir High. Congratulations to all of the members of our team who debated

throughout the competition. Thanks also to Katie Stephens who worked with the

students throughout the competition.

HATS

Next term it will be compulsory for all children to wear a hat when they are outside. Children must

wear a royal blue school hat. Parents can buy a bucket hat from the School’s Uniform Shop

however they can also wear a royal blue broad-brimmed hat. Children are not permitted to wear

a baseball style hat.

Parents please make sure your child has a hat that is clearly named in their bag at all times during

Term 4. Children who do not have a hat will be restricted to playing in an undercover area.

The Uniform Shop will be open Friday mornings from 9.00am.

On Friday we will be finishing school at 2.30. I hope all of our families have a very relaxing and enjoyable break. I look forward

to everyone’s safe return on Tuesday October 4th.

Grade 1 Report ....

This term the Grade One students have been focusing on a Geography Unit called “Places

around us”.

We attended the Royal Botanic Gardens Excursion last week which tied in with this unit.

Students explored the environment around them and participated in fun activities. They

learned about plant structure, survival and the importance of plants in our lives.

Making pot pourri in the Herb Garden was great - especially with all the beautiful smells of the

flowers and herbs! The students also planted their own seedlings. They have the responsibility

of watering and taking care of their plant at home. They are so excited to watch the growth

of their very own plant!!!

Grade 2 Report ....

This week the Grade 2 children were introduced to Wibbly as part of

our Social and Emotional Wellbeing program.

Wibbly was feeling stressed and the children discussed what could have

happened to make him feel this way. We talked about what happens to

our bodies when we feel like this and discovered that different things

caused different people to feel stressed.

Next we will look at the ways we can deal with our stress.

Grade 5 Report ....

Last week as a part of our Geography Car Rally Unit the Grade 5’s were tourists for the day and caught the train into the city.

We went to the MCG and had a tour of the MCC, went onto the MCG ground, learnt about the ground’s history and went into

the change rooms. We wandered around the National Sports Museum, tried out different sports in Game On and got to meet a

former Olympian, Kate Smyth. We had a relaxing lunch in the park and went to the Fitzroy Gardens. Some of the children saw

Captain Cook’s Cottage, the mini Tudor Village and the Fairy Tree.

Everyone had a great day!

The Italian Report ....

This term in Grade 3 we have been busy reading the story Sogni

D’Oro. Through the text, the children have been learning about

verbs and some popular Italian pastimes. They have also written their

own adaption to the story, each producing a new pagina (page).

Second hand secondary school uniforms ….

From time to time we have requests to advertise

second hand secondary school uniform in the

Wednesday Weekly.

We do not advertise directly in the newsletter but

we do place notices on the Community Noticeboard

at the Senior School - in the stair well near the

Uniform Shop.

We urge parents to regularly check the board for

items of interest.

Log into Qkr.

Your child/children will be listed under the Student Profiles tab on Qkr.

Your child/children’s name and grade will be visible – if the grade or year level is incorrect

tap the child’s name and it will take you to Update Student Profile and from there you

can correct/update year and grade.

Finalise by pressing the Update Profile tab at the bottom of the screen! You’re done!
