Introduction to Diaphragm Seals
Diaphragm seal is used…
To separate the measuring
instrument from the process media
To protect the sensitive measuring
instrument
To transfer the pressure up to the
measuring instrument
Diaphragm Seal (also called chemical seal or remote seal)

Introduction to Diaphragm Seals
Why do we need diaphragm seals?
When the process media is:
Aggressive
Corrosive
Very viscous
Heterogeneous and fibrous
Crystallized or polymerized
Toxic and can cause pollution
When the process media has extreme temperatures
When Location of tapping point is dificult to achieve
Process has specific requirements (for example hygienic)

Tips to reduce the temperature effect
Use a larger diameter of the diaphragm.
This makes the diaphragm more flexible (less hard) and
it is able to absorb a higher degree of pressure change.
Typical 3” size is recommended.
Selection of proper system fill fluid
(this depends on the process temp. mainly, also
consider viscosity & specific gravity)
Minimize the capillary length and inner
diameter
Length is usually fixed based on the installation
requirements
Note:
Reducing the inner diameter will increase the
Response time! Please check the result carefully for
both temperature effect as well as response time!!

Diaphragm with Gold-lining
against diffusion of molecular hydrogen, e.g.
during hydrogenating activities
layer thickness approx. 20 - 25 µm
Gold-lining is based on metallic bonded
diaphragms
Platinium - diaphragms
against diffusion of atomic hydrogen, e.g.
electrolyses
the solid platinium diaphragm is plastic bonded,
max. +260°C
