Jewelry made to tempt, please, delight, flatter…thesewords describe the pieces made by the greatest jewelrydesigner of the 20th Century. He was named Fulco San-tostefano della Cerda, the Sicilian Duke of Verdura, buteveryone called him Fulco.

Fulco died in 1978 but his legacy has been revived byWard Landrigan, a former head of The Jewelry Depart-ment at Sotheby’s, now the owner of Verdura, thisyear’s Swan Ball Jeweler. Landrigan, who will bring thecollection to Nashville for the Ball, reflects the ambi-ance, the style, and ease of Verdura today. Verdura hasan inescapable air of exclusivity. There is nothing datedor stuffy about Verdura. The jewels are witty and vo-luptuous.

Fulco, born in Palermo in 1898, knew all the players. He first worked for Chanel, but with the backing of Vin-cent Astor and Cole Porter, Fulco opened his own com-pany in New York in 1939 and changed the nature ofjewelry. His friends and clients included MarleneDietrich, Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth, Noel Coward, Or-son Wells and Katherine Hepburn. When Ward Lan-drigan purchased the company in 1985, he acquired theenormous Verdura archive and created pieces from theoriginal designs. He breathed new life into the compa-ny and made it a vibrant, viable business that keeps theart as well as the mystique of Verdura alive.
