From Des

A Big Thank You Umpires “I needed a lot of help this week because there is a shortage of umpires across the board. But thanks to you guys for your continued commitment we have managed to fulfil all our commitments PLUS a few more, 15 in total!

A special THANKS to Ian Fitz who, at the tender age of 60+++ is umpiring two matches. Another special THANKS to Joe Godfrey who has been shifted about like a Yo Yo during the week without even the murmur of a complaint. Another special THANKS to Chris Clarke who is dashing back from his appointed game at Southgate to umpire one of the club games at Home. And, finally, a special THANKS to Chris Butler who is playing at Maidenhead and then making a sprint for it to do the Men’s 2’s game at Brent Cross because MHUA were unable to provide two umpires for the game!

THANKS once again to ALL of you Des"

And a big thank you to Des for organising this impressive effort.

KULDIP SINGH BAHRA (4th March – 21st February 2017)

Bahra, as he was known to his teammates and colleagues, played First Team Hockey at Eastcote during the 70’s and 80’s. This was an era when “Grass” hockey was the only game in town and “stick work” was a dominant feature of the game. Bahra was a worthy exponent of this particular skill. Playing as an attacking Right Half in the classical 2-3-5 formation, in a team that was well endowed with “stick” players, Bahra was a key member of the team. Under the captaincy of Hardev Sidhu this team won the League and Cup during that particular period. His peculiar crouching style and occasional sleight of hand with the stick bamboozled many an opponent as he sought to get a talented Forward Line going on the attack. Bahra immigrated to England from Kenya in 1966. He represented Kenya before coming to England After several years in Eastcote’s First Team he continued to play for Eastcote at Second team level along with Rex Antony, Neville McLeod, Ray Brown, his good friend Gurbax and a host of other former First Team players. He has been a staunch member of the Thursday Club in recent years and is well known for his “double scotch” response when offered a drink at the Bar! He passed away on the 21

st February from a

persistent Heart problem, in the presence of his wife, Parminder, and daughters Harmit and Simran and son-in-law David. Bahra had an affable personality and played a classy game of hockey. He thoroughly enjoyed the social life associated with the game and went on many a tour with the team to Europe where he acquitted himself well, not only on the pitch, but also on the social scene! He was a product of a bygone era and will be missed by many but especially by those who are also of that era Des

st teams won 2-1 after going a goal down and

both winners were in the last minute or so! Spooky. The Ladies section continues their great run of form with 3 wins and two draws but the 3rds point at Hendon means they leapfrog our girls with 2 games remaining. The Menes 3rds got a point at Oxford but wanted more whilst the 6ths remain 2

nd and the Old

Boars are safe. The 5ths went to Oxford as well only for the game to be abandoned 10 minutes from the end due to floodlight issues. My team of the week goes to the Ladies 5s for a great win at Ashford. I went to Maidstone for the Mixed team for them to lose with a late goal but the Boys U16s won in extra time against Spencer and face Oxford Hawks on 26

th

in a Mercian last 16 game, Our under18 boys and girls section has always been called the Colts section which whilst we all know what it means is a slightly old fashioned description for our young athletes so we have decided to rename the section as Eastcote Juniors. We are now changing all our documentation to show it as the Junior Section from now on. I will be at the Club on Saturday morning only as I have an important fixture at Twickenham to fulfil in the afternoon. Swing Low. The Champagne night is next Saturday the 18

th so if

you have sponsored a team please bring down your bottle this week – get a label from behind the bar and we will keep it chilled for the following week. The Dinner Dance is on Saturday 8

th April and

please book up your tickets – details in the newsletter. This will as usual include our annual Awards and the list of nominations has started. We will also be asking that any U18 attending has a parent /guardian/ nominated adult who will take responsibility for that young person. Rob

Ladies 1's v Henley Saturday 4th March 13.30 Won 2-1

Onwards & Upwards Saturday saw the Ladies 1

st Team taking on Henley.

During the first half of the game, it was apparent this was going to be a close one and that Eastcote were going to have to work hard as a team to get this win. After a lethargic first half, Eastcote were down 1-0 at the half time whistle.

Following the half time talk, Eastcote were feeling determined to claw back this victory, with Chunky stating that all team members needed to up their intensity by at least 30-40% in the second half in order to win. With this in mind, along with the knowledge that Henley were starting a player down following a green card at the end of the first half, the team were feeling driven to maximise this opportunity. The team worked tirelessly during the second half, with great running and skills by Philly down the right-hand side of the pitch. The first goal came early by Macca, putting Henley under visible stress leading to them challenging many of the umpires’ decisions. Eastcote remained calm and continued to pressure Henley, with the winning goal coming from a spectacular hit by Whippet to win Eastcote the game. Mom- Philly for her fantastic skills and running down the right-hand side of the pitch. Dod- Me, apparently getting your hair cut the week before team photos (by coincidence only) isn’t such a good idea! Beth

Men's 1's v Chiswick Saturday 4th March Won 2 - 1

Fightback Eastcote went into this match off the back of a 5-1 drumming away to Oxford, and were without a win in 3 weeks. To make things worse, Eastcote were 6 regular first team players, but the replacements performed exceptionally well to pull the team through in a narrow win. In the first half of the season Eastcote produced their arguably best performance away to Chiswick in a 6-0 hammering, but nothing like that would happen in this match. Both teams started quickly, the match going from end-to-end at a quick pace, but neither side really created many chances, and it was quite the surprise we reached half time at 0-0. Chiswick, who throughout were a much better outfit than in the first half of the season, played a very good second half and deservedly took the lead early in the half. Eastcote were on the back foot, but fought hard to keep the deficit to only one, and started to create some chances of their own, and eventually got an equaliser. After some neat play down the left handside, the ball was pulled across the D and Fil da Costa was on hand to tap home. Both sides went in search of a winner that arguably neither deserved, but Eastcote got it 7 minutes from time through the most unlikely of sources. Paul Marchant, making his 1s debut for the season, found himself unmarked at the top of the D and rifled home into the bottom left corner, with the keeper only managing to deflect it further into the corner. Special mention also to Craig, who did a fantastic job stepping up and looking nothing but assured in the left back role. Big match at home to Marlow this week, 3 more matches, if we win all 3, you never know what might happen! Brooksy

Ladies 3s vs Hendon Saturday 4th March Drew 1 - 1

Level At The Top This week we were playing the top of the league and it was the weekend a few members of the team decided not to be here... we see how it is ladies. Anyway, we were at the beach and the sun was coming out but it was far too early for me to be properly awake. Both teams came out wanting the win and we fought hard for possession. We had an unfortunate early injury meaning Steph, our usual center mid, off for the rest of the game. With a player down we pushed forward, though the oppo were very vocal about Charms' kind of pushing. One player from Hendon even storming off in the middle of the game. 0-0 half time An encouraging half time talk from Coach Bakes and Lucy, as well as taking our weekly team selfie (see below) had us ready for the second half. We went out in the second half singing, after we learnt the correct words to "Can't take my eyes off of you". I don't remember most of it so to cut a long story short, they scored, Freya scored a great goal a minute later, Eye gave me a green card (hence the match report) and we ended with a 1-1 draw. We also found that copying really is the sincerest form of flattery, as Hendon decided they liked our matching team scrunchies so much, they are getting some blue ones for their next match. Well played ladies! P.S. hope to see you all at Champagne Night/ Jelly day (AGM) and Dinner Dance! Leanne"

Men's 6's v Leighton Buzzard 3s Saturday 4th March Won 8 (Eight) - 0

6s March on! The 6s have to win all of their remaining games to ensure promotion. Last two games against promotion rivals resulted in 5-3 and 2-1 wins but we weren't expecting this result against a team who had scored 14 goals in their last two games.

The EastcoNet 7 11th March 2017

Four goals for The Ghost to take him (I think) past twenty for the season, one each from Shamique and Fred and two at the end for Captain Chris have ensured we stay second. Another rival on Saturday, Maidenhead then two absolute crunch matches to finish off. Is it possible? Well we haven't lost since Christmas :) Captain Chris

Eagles v Abingdon 3's Saturday 4th March Lost 1 - 6

Bad day at Black Rock. This was a title given to me during my O’Levels where we had to write a story with this title. We were not anywhere near a Black Rock but it was a bad day. Another long drive faced the Eagles, 12 men were mustered for this journey including two guests in Danny and Suranga's friend who was flying back to Sri Lanka that evening. Our biggest mistake of the day seemed to be to score first, as after this we faced a barrage of attacks with 10 men of the opposition playing in our half for most of the game. Our few forays into their half did get us to their D and win a few short corners but nothing came of them. There is no one thing that can be singled out that caused the dismal day, lack of passing, poor position play, poor goalkeeping I think we just don't travel well for 10.30 AM games. On a brighter note the Spread Eagle was waiting for us with Chips and warm Baguettes, filled with Sausage and Pulled pork (no use to me but the guys enjoyed it). This was after hot showers where at one point there was a prospect of having to share these with the ladies but a locked door prevented this and when the key was found the ladies had luckily vacated. We are finally home again this week. Z

Ladies 2's v PHC Chiswick 2's Saturday 4th March Won 6 - 1

Upwards Too Saturday afternoon, a fantastic win of 6-1 against Chiswick ladies 2s. Eastcote started off motivated from our team talk and roaring to go, as soon as we stepped on the pitch we could tell that we was going to win. We started off with amazing passes from the mid fielders to the forwards, with our defence marking close to the opposition. The first goal was from Brownie with amazing reverse stick strike which followed by 2 more throughout the game, leaving her with a wonderful hat-tick. Jackie followed with another goal in the second half and to finish it off we had Lucy strike two more in. Would like to congratulate brownie with man of the match and a massive well done to the whole team for amazing skills and determination. Natalie

Old Boars v Maidenhead Saturday 4th March Won 4 - 2

Weeksy Bleeds for the Cause It's not their fault they do not know The birdsong from the radio, It's not their fault they often go To Maidenhead And talk of sport and makes of cars In various bogus-Tudor bars And daren't look up and see the stars But belch instead. In labour-saving homes, with care Their wives frizz out peroxide hair And dry it in synthetic air And paint their nails. Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough To get it ready for the plough. The cabbages are coming now; The earth exhales. Sir John Betjeman

Men's 3's v Oxford Saturday 4th March Drew 3- 3

Nearly Away trip to Headington Girls school. Beautiful day. A must win game. We came out of the blocks quickly and had Oxford on the back foot. The pressure told with a number of short corners. The second resulted in a goal from Jeff. A magnificent finish beautifully struck from about a meter out. Harder to miss! Oxford managed to pull one back with an early strike from the edge of the D. In the second half the game was more balanced. However, a short corner resulted in a flick, well finished by Harry Cox. Another short corner saw Harry and Monty combine with close passing and a great finish by Monty. 1-3. Winning. Clue mistakes, tired legs and 2 very soft goals from Oxford. The last 5 minutes was Eastcote attack against Oxford defence. But to no avail. 3-3. But some of the best hockey we have managed to play this season. A point would have to do, try again next week.

Men's 2's v Slough 1’s Saturday 4th March Lost 4 - 6

Seeing Red So this week we had top of the league. unfortunately Eastcote found themselves a bit light on the ground and so the 2’s only went with 12. A tough game lay ahead but Slough had recently lost to Tring so the 2’s hoped for an upset.

The EastcoNet 8 11th March 2017

Early on the game didn't start well as slough took an early lead, however the 2’s struck back quickly with Browner scoring from a scrappy short corner making it 1-1. Slough generally controlled the play with Eastcote hitting on the counter, unfortunately during one attack Sam gave away a short and Slough scored from it. However he made amends when him and Zak worked a two-on-one and Sam slotted home the equaliser. Both Dos and Will then took his from the ball but then in a controversial moment Dos was hit in the face by a stick and the slough player was issued with a red. A man up, Eastcote should have pushed on, but instead we did our best PSG impression and ended up 6-2 down. Down but not beaten, the 2’s fought back and Sam grabbed his second in a good team move. Paul Brown then got his second from the spot after Andy won a p flick. 4 - 6 it ended, a shame as the 2’s will view this as a missed opportunity to grab some points

As manager of the England over 65’s who have just won European Gold at Southgate let me share with you one of our secrets, that could benefit all of us who play or have played sport. It would in fact benefit anyone with issues around back pain, arthritis, and/or lack of energy.

We have been supported by “Xenca“ for the past 4 years who have recommended two products to us and which the majority of the squads are using. I swear by them. The first is Collagen and the second Five a day + V. Both are natural products. If you have a club member in the squad talk to them about it. U16 Boys v Spencer Sunday 5th March Won 2 - 1 a.e.t.

It's good to talk Eastcote U16 Boys progressed into the last 8 of the Mercian South Play Offs on Sunday with a superb team performance against Spencer. With both sides unbeaten this season it was Eastcote who, uncharacteristically, made the brighter start. After 5 minutes a brilliant turnover from Tom resulted in a quick pass to Luke deep in the Spencer D. With mature composure, Luke drew a defender and the goalkeeper to square for an open goal tap in for Tomilade (who, having being stuck in traffic [anyone had the pleasure of driving to Spencer before?] had not had time to warm up). Perhaps the goal came too early/easily and Spencer began to cause Eastcote problems with their movement off the ball. At half time the score was 1-1 with all to play for. During the break Eastcote resolved to communicate more often and more quickly to pick up their midfield runners. This paid benefits and thwarted Spencer's attacks.

Eastcote won 4 to 5 short corners, but were unable to convert, partly due to some good saves by the Spencer keeper. So 1-1 at full time and with a squad of 11 against a squad of 16, extra time of 10 mins each way favoured Spencer. Not so! Eastcote dug deep and worked their socks off. A short corner rebounded to Alex in the D who slapped the ball towards Zak. The ball missed Zak, hit the defender's stick and looped over the keeper into the goal. This again occurred early into extra time and meant a nerve wracking 16 minutes or so, or "squeaky thumb" time as Gary calls it (I think that's what he said!). In the second half of extra time, Eastcote found themselves down to 9 players when green cards were handed out to first Tomilade, and then Zak in quick succession. Of course, in those situations all you have to do is throw a 60 yard aerial off the other end of the pitch to eat up time - thanks, Tom. At last the final whistle sounded and Eastcote had held onto their lead to win the match. MoM - Ollie Lazarevic - for a faultless right back display. [it must also be said that everyone played well] Many thanks to Defi for umpiring (especially from Luke who curiously avoided a green card for a deliberate foot) Next game - home v Oxford Hawks, Sunday 26 March. Squad (team!): Michael, Alex, Kobi, Ollie, Tom, Zak, Chris, Suleyman, Luke, Tomilade and Harry.

U8 Tournament Sunday 5th March Last Sunday the Eastcote U8 section attended a mixed mini-tournament hosted by Old Kingstonians, with PHC Chiswick as the other invited guests. Eastcote were able to field three teams in the 5-a-side format. There were five x 12 minute games played and all of our teams managed to collect the full array of results (although Jane assures me her Boars team was the most successful!). Another fantastic tournament which was well run despite the “character building” conditions at the start; with all the children showing hardiness and some impressive hockey skills. In this day and age it is sensible not to single out individual performances, but I’m not sensible…so particular praise goes to Lily Wickham, Millie Hine and Sai Dodhia for their exceptional displays. Well done! Many thanks to all the parents who set their alarm clocks for the 9am start time. It wouldn’t happen without your commitment either. And finally, an acknowledgement to our organiser and our volunteer coaches; Sal Blackwell, Jane Carter and Andy Byrne. Keith Antony
