Invention of the Tourbillon, 1801

The Classique Grande Complication Tourbillon 5317 provides the perfect setting for Breguet’s most spectacular invention and undeniably the most beautiful of all horological complications, developed over 210 years ago to compensate for the effects of gravity. On the back, the “B-shaped” oscillating weight reveals the beauty of the meticulously hand-engraved movement. History is still being written...

FOCUS ON THE UNIQUE EXPERTISE OF BREGUET’S ARTISANS

To create each Breguet timepiecerequires the combined work of

some thirty or so specializedartisans, representing all theManufacture’s centuries-old

expertise. For the watchmaker, despite his central role in theproduction process, is not the

only artisan to take part in cre-ating a new watch. Today

Breguet points the spotlight on arange of craftsmen and decora-

tors who frequently go almostunnoticed but who contribute tofashioning timepieces of the most

exceptional beauty.

ack in the 18th century, Abraham-Louis Breguet already attached particu-lar importance to the decoration of his creations. The famous watchmak-er’s timepieces all exhibit different motifs that enhance the beauty notonly of their movements, but also of their cases and dials. The motiva-

tion for this meticulous artistic endeavor is nevertheless primarily functional. Thedecorating of watches can often prevent them from becoming prematurely tar-nished, and helps overcome the fragility of matt or polished surfaces that can onlytoo easily be scratched, grazed or otherwise damaged in a variety of ways.

This tendency has evolved over time: today aesthetic considerations takeprecedent over the practical reasons at the origin of watch decoration. In addition totheir technical skills, Breguet artisans, whether they are bevellers, engravers or engine-turners, nowadays thus lend their skills to the service of beauty, while at the same timeperpetuating an ancestral expertise worthy of the greatest watchmakers of all time.

Among these finishing tech-niques based on rare skills transmittedfrom generation to generation, bevel-ing is characterized by its complexity.Serving to polish and round off theedges of the component parts ofwatch movements, beveling performsa double function. At a practical level,it removes imperfections and traces ofmachining that could hamper the effi-ciency and accuracy of the watchmovement. Its role is above all aes-thetic, however, thanks to the subtleinterplay of reflections between satin-

is unquestionably one of the identifying features of a Breguettimepiece. The initially smooth dial disc made of 18-carat goldor mother-of-pearl is first worked with a graver. The “borders”thus obtained highlight the different zones that will show thevarious time displays (the power reserve, moon phase indicator, small seconds, date window, etc.). The dial is then ready to bedecorated, which will give it a delicately textured, non-reflect-ing matt surface, and will also mark out the zones with a vari-

ety of motifs – clous de Paris, flinqué, graind’orge, wave or basketwork designs, etc.

Constantly seeking to innovate, butat the same time keen to perpetuate the tradi-tional crafts of its pastimes, Breguet also col-laborates with the very best masters of cameocarving. A form of bas-relief engraving with ahistory of over 4,000 years behind it, cameo-work is one of the most remarkable forms ofcraftsmanship in the world. It is practicedusing shells that present strata of contrastingcolors. Using a graver that he has himself cre-ated, the artisan works the interior layers ofthe shells that are only a few millimeters

thick, producing a sculpture of exceptional delicacy. The selec-tion of the shells (subjected to ethical principles that respect themarine fauna) is an essential stage in the art of cameo-work.Master cameo engravers work only the noblest shells that fea-ture the most refined tones. Once the material has been decid-ed, the artisan proceeds to cut into the shell in its flattest part. Each piece is then carefully carved and filed so as to obtain per-fectly rounded forms. The craftsman then traces in pencil theoutline of his future creation. Now the engraving can begin! This is the most delicate and artistic stage of the creativeprocess, which enables the cameo, once it has been cleaned andpolished, finally to reveal itself in all its splendor.

finished surfaces and sharply-cut polished angles. Each surfaceof a timepiece is re-worked, embellished and painstakinglyburnished with a range of tools and abrasive materials thatseem to have survived from a previous age. The angles finallyobtained have either sharp external edges or narrow internalones; their edges are straight, curved or rounded-off. Thusenhanced, the watch movement is a hymn to the authenticityof Breguet’s watchmaking expertise.

Engraving is, for its part, afully-fledged decorative art in its ownright. With the aid of a range of toolsthat he has patiently prepared, theartisan carves the finest of materials byhand. The slightest error or tremblingof the hand can reduce several days’work to nothing in a split second. Thedecorative effects thus obtained giveBreguet timepieces an unrivaledrefinement and unique identity thatmakes them immediately recognizable.

A form of raised engraving, the technique of engine-turning by hand has been particularlyprized by master watchmakers since its first appearance in the16th century. Originally used to enhance the beauty of watchcases, Abraham-Louis Breguet began to use engine-turning tofashion the dials. Veritable works of art, Breguet dials epito-mize a spirit of infinite patience applied in the service of animpressive mastery of technique. The dials are made by handin accordance with ancestral working methods, and exactlyhow the delicate details are achieved remains a jealously-guard-ed production secret even today. Worked in the traditionalstyle on a lathe (in the case of the circular motifs) or in astraight line on a machine (for linear patterns), engine-turning

On 21 December 1812, Abraham-LouisBreguet put the finishing touches to an extraordinarytimepiece, commissioned from him in 1810 by awoman of equally remarkable character, CarolineMurat, Queen of Naples. A fervent admirer of Breguetwatch creations, Napoleon Bonaparte’s younger sisterwas in the habit of making regular purchases from herfavorite watchmaker. In fact she ordered a total of noless than 34 watches and clocks from A.-L. Breguet, including the first ever wristwatch in the history ofhorology. As a tribute to this, the most innovative time-piece of its day, and in memory of the woman who com-missioned it, in 2002 Montres Breguet launched anexclusively feminine collection that took its inspirationfrom the original watch first ordered by the Queen ofNaples, and officially recorded as Watch No. 2639.

CELEBRATING THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST WRISTWATCH

Page 10: Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers - 2013 Catalog

I first walked into Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers many years ago. My grandmother hadjust handed down a few of her favorite pieces of jewelry to me and some of them were inneed of repair. I have to confess that I sometimes find jewelry stores a bit intimidating, but I wanted to find a local jeweler with whom I could feel at ease.

Faina and Edward Shapiro forever changed my perception of what a jewelry store can and should be.As owners of Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers, they make each customer feel like a guest in their home -their gleaming, elegant store located in the heart of Bernardsville. It is equally inviting to the casual win-dow shopper and the serious customer alike. Everyone who passes through their door is greeted with awarm smile and friendly “Hello”. The intimacy Faina and Edward have created is more than a testamentto their commitment to their business; it is a reflection of their commitment to each other.

The two are no strangers to the world of fine jewelry. They have spent 27 years building a verystrong business and a loyal clientele that is found throughout New Jersey and even beyond its borders. Those who have shopped here remember first-rate service almost more than the stunning pieces thatFaina and Edward carry. It is customer loyalty that has yielded real relation-ships and Faina and Edward’s inclusion in some of the special moments andmilestones of their customers’ lives. It is, in their words, “The part of thejob we love most.”

This September, Faina and Edward celebrated their 25th weddinganniversary, marking a quarter century of building not only a businessbut a life together. They are two people who exemplify a true partner-ship and possess a deeper bond, the kind that can’t easily be explainedby couples who have it.

Faina was a fresh-faced 20-year-old living in New YorkCity. After earning her degree in Accounting from BrooklynCollege, she worked as an underwriter at an insurance compa-ny. The couple met on a blind date, arranged by the girlfriendof Edward’s roommate. The friend decided to set them upafter overhearing a telephone conversation between Edwardand his mother, in which he spoke with great respect to her.The friend was familiar with Faina’s values and thought thetwo would be a great match.

After a successful introduction, the couple continued tosee each other regularly; both had a demanding schedule thatoften meant working 12-hour shifts, seven days a week. “Weonly had Sunday nights free and realized that that would beour date night; the rest of the time we stayed on the phone -sometimes for hours,” Edward remembers. He admired Faina’sdesire to learn and explore her determination to be ahead ofthe pack. “The more I got to know her, the more I saw what

Both Faina and Edward came to the United States intheir youth, immigrating with their families - he from Kiev,Ukraine, landing in Minnesota; she from Minsk, Belarus, mak-ing Brooklyn home. Like many immigrants, they quickly set-tled in, learned the language, and got to work.

In 1983, Edward moved to New York City to begin anapprenticeship in a jewelry factory, later became one of theirestablished gem setters. Not long after he started, the factoryowner recognized Edward’s potential as well as his strong workethic and offered him a partnership in a retail venture. All of asudden, he was an entrepreneur, which suited him just fine, asEdward had always wanted his own business. It was the start ofwhat would become a successful journey into fine jewelry. Atthe age of 25, he got what he wanted and Diamond DreamFine Jewelers was born.

omellato jewels compliment everyday life and fash-ion, yet feel distinctive and unique - This innova-tive approach is what Pomellato has been promot-ing for over forty years. Pomellato jewels are rare,

exclusive, and meticulously hand-crafted in Milan, Italy. The essence of artistic jewelry making is evident

and consistent throughout every Pomellato collection. Eachindividual jewel is carefully crafted by hand, resulting inflawlessly composed pieces. From embracing opulently col-ored stones in rings and earrings, to weaving intricate, fine-detailed links into necklaces and bracelets. It is preciselythis outpouring of skill and pride that earns Pomellato therespect and praise of its contemporaries.

Cut and set in creative ways, Pomellato gemsvisually supersede what is expected of a colored stone.Highest-quality madera quartz, pink tourmaline, peridot, blue topaz and garnet are just some of the vividly coloredgems implemented into the designs. Bold color combina-tions are created to intensify the visual impact of the jew-elry. When set in gold, these stones evolve into modern, yet ageless pieces of jewelry, some of which have becomeclassics over the years.

When it came to their engagement, Edward took a differ-ent approach than most. As a jeweler, he thought simply givingFaina a diamond - just the stone - instead of a ring would be alovely gesture. “So she could choose the right design for herring,” he tells. Little did he know that she would change thesetting three times. On September 6, 1987, Edward and Fainawere married at the Huntington Town House in Long Island infront of their closest family and friends.

As they became established in their community and grewtheir business, Faina and Edward also grew their family, becom-ing parents to two daughters, Sasha and Tess.

Sasha, 23, who works in public relations, says her parentsconstantly push her and her sister in as many directions as pos-sible. “They work so hard to give us everything they never hadas kids and always motivate us to do more and get ahead in life. Most importantly though, they love us unconditionally.”

Tess, 20, a business student at Ithaca College, jokes thather favorite part about being their daughter is, “Knowing oneday I will have the most beautiful engagement ring!” Pensively, she adds that her parents have introduced them to more cultur-al experiences than they can count. “We have travelled to dif-ferent countries, tasted new cuisines, and learned firsthand howto appreciate fine art,” she tells of her parents’ zest for life.

was there,” says Edward. “She wanted to travel and experiencedifferent cultures, and so did I,” he goes on. Faina agrees thatthere was compatibility from the get - go, in terms of theircommonality, their goals, and their aspirations. “From the start,it was clear that we shared the same old-world values.”

Soon the couple was spending every weekend together. The relationship was growing and they knew the next stepswere engagement, a house, and marriage.

“For over 25 years, we have been custom creatingjewelry. Each piece reflects the unique personalityof the person we are designing for. These rings, meticulously hand crafted in platinum with dia-monds are our latest creations. Stop in and talk tous about creating you next family heirloom.”

Faina and Edward continued to grow their business evenfurther, expanding the company to a total of five additionalDiamond Dream Fine Jewelry stores between 1992 and 2004(including their present location). For more than a decade, thestores thrived. The couple was able to add staff and deliverunique pieces to the delight of customers.

One of the many friendships that blossomed started whenMrs. Irene Evans, one of their original customers from theirfirst store in the American Way Mall, bought a piece of jewelryfrom Edward. Mrs. Evans daughter, Tracy Scillia, remains aloyal customer. “To this day, I still wear the aquamarine ringthat my mom bought from Edward,” Tracy shares. “What Ilove about Edward is that he loves ‘to create’. I am blessed tohave many beautiful pieces from him.”

Over time, Faina and Edward real-ized that with so many locations, theywere losing the personal connectionsthey so greatly cherished. This revela-tion led them to scale back. Theywould focus solely on their location inBernardsville. Doing so enabled themto establish a relationship of trust, one customer at a time.

“Faina has impeccable taste,” explains Edward. “Hersense of fashion and style, combined with my manufacturingknowledge, allows me to make sure that what she picks out isalso made well. It is a combination that works for us.” Fainaconcurs that the two have much in common, not only in theirbackgrounds but in their drive. “We have a shared desire toachieve more and a mutual respect for one another.” Bothrecognize that it was the talents they had nurtured in theiryouth - his creativity, her business savvy- that formed the

foundation for their long and successful partnership, both personal and professional.

The couple teases that they should be creditedwith being married for 48 years, if you combine 23years of working together with 25 years of marriage. They truly feel that one complements the other.

Tess observes the same: “They have a great yin and yangto their relationship. My mother is very quantitative and takescare of all the bills. My father, on the other hand, is very artis-tic and loves to design as well as cook. They still teach eachother things, even after 25 years of marriage!”

In 2009, Faina and Edward opened their new store onMine Brook Road in the center of Bernardsville. The change inlocation gave them increased visibility, though they too have feltthe strains of the economy. How have they coped? As theyalways have: By working harder. “We are always challengingourselves to do more,” notes Edward. “If you stay in the sameplace, you cannot make progress.”

“I have seen their struggles and successes asthey have reached for the ‘AmericanDream,’” shares Sasha. “If you triedto tell me about two people thatwork harder than my parents, Iwouldn’t believe you. They put every-thing into this store and even after allthis time, they still wake up excited togo to work.”

important to us,” says Edward. For both of them, DiamondDream Fine Jewelers is more than just a retail establishmentwhere goods are bought and sold: it’s an extension of the couple’spassion for life, jewelry, and love for each other. “Every Sundayyou can find my parents having brunch at Raymond’s inMontclair, and most likely playing tennis or walking before that,”says Sasha. “They really enjoy spending every day together.”

Their charitable activity is extensive. The couple supportsnumerous area schools, hospitals, and organizations in theirfundraising and at benefits throughout the year. They find itrewarding as well as important to provide sponsorships for localevents to stay in touch with the community.

For the two, making a life together is a work in progress. They certainly understand the culture of their work lives and areable to manage their family life with just as much love andgrace. They are the very picture of a couple that cherish oneanother and the life they have created together.

Tess agrees, adding, “It is truly amazing what my parentshave done since moving to America. My sister and I are solucky they created this business; it’s one we’ll be able to contin-ue to expand in the future.”

To keep on the cutting edge in the world of fine jewelry,Faina and Edward attend numerous trade shows each year. They regularly work with designers - both those they meet andthose they carry in-house - to keep their merchandise fresh andever-evolving. With their vast experience, it’s easy for them torecognize the finer things in life, which sets them apart fromthe competition. “To us, jewelry should be as unique and dif-ferent as the person it reflects,” they both add, almost finishingeach others sentence.

Faina understands how the right piece can change one’slook in an instant. “Jewelry is a fashion accessory which canmake an outfit. Yet, it also tells the story of your personality, mood, and stage of life. It can tell a lot about you.”

With an impressive mix of Breguet, Breitling, Omega, andBaume & Mercier timepieces on display, Edward states that thefine watch business has “never been better.” He notes that awatch is a solid investment as well as one that’s frequently cher-ished and passed down through the generations.

Like most business owners, Faina and Edward find thatreferrals are often the biggest compliment they can receive.“When our customers refer someone, it’s about trust. This is very

A documentary, which also draws on the talents of some of the world’s leading aerialand underwater cinematographers, oceanographers and biologists, was created to changethe way people look at the oceans and to encourage them to imagine conservation and

stewardship as responsibilities shared by everyone on Earth.

ann Arthus-Bertrand introduced the film to a capacity crowd at theOMEGA House and following the screening, took part in a discussionmoderated by Zoey Bird. Stephen Urquhart, the President of OMEGA,talked about his brand’s long interest in underwater exploration and ocean-

ic health and Arthus-Bertrand commended OMEGA’s commitment. He said, “It is arisk for a company to give money to an activist like me. But that’s what they did andnot once did they ask to see what I was doing. They never told me what to do.”

OMEGA’s President Urquhart: “No one could do it better”Stephen Urquhart said, “We offered this project to Yann because we knew that noone could do it better. He’s both an environmentalist and the world's leading spe-cialist in aerial photography. He has a unique combination of skills that allowedhim to capture and communicate the majesty and the beauty of the oceans cine-matically. He, Michael and their team have done a remarkable job.”

The film’s composer Armand Amar, who was at thescreening, was asked about his inspiration forthe moving soundtrack. He said thathe had been inspired by the filmfootage, pointing out that thepowerful imagery suggestedthe types of themes thatwere called for.

Reaching the widest possible audienceWhen Arthus-Bertrand was asked if he thought that there wassufficient political will to address the global issue of oceanichealth, he said that he hoped that Planet Ocean would raisepublic awareness, inspiring viewers to encourage politicians toconsider legislation that would help protect the oceans. Heannounced that the film is being made available free of chargeto interested schools and NGOs to ensure that it reaches thewidest possible audience.

Explaining some great natural mysteriesPlanet Ocean aims to explain some of the planet’s greatestnatural mysteries in ways that make them understandable andaccessible to everyone. Finally, it allows young people toimagine that a more sustainable world is not only desirablebut achievable. The film combines the kind of breathtakingaerial shots that have made Arthus-Bertrand’s filmmaking rep-utation along with underwater imagery from an award-win-ning team of cameramen.

OMEGA’s maritime legacyOMEGA has long been associated with the planet's oceansand concerned with their health and preservation. In 1932, itreleased the world's first divers' watch. By 1936, Dr. CharlesWilliam Beebe, the American naturalist and underwaterexplorer who was one of the inventors of the bathysphere, spoke enthusiastically about how well his OMEGA Marinehad served him when he was working 14 meters beneath thesurface of the Pacific Ocean for extended periods of time.

Commander Yves Le Prieur, the father of the aqualung, wasoften photographed underwater wearing his own OMEGAMarine. Jacques-Yves Cousteau famously wore an OMEGAPloprof and Jacques Mayol – the legendary free diver knownas "The Dolphin Man" – wore an OMEGA Seamaster on hisrecord-setting dives.

When the late Sir Peter Blake, OMEGA'sfriend and brand ambassador, retiredfrom competition as one of theworld's most successful competi-tive sailors, he committed hisenergies to the protection ofhis beloved oceans. SirPeter was motivated by asimple motto: "Nowater, no life." Hecreated his non-profit organization,Blakexpeditions, under the auspices of theUnited Nationsand OMEGA.

The OMEGA SEAMASTER PLANET OCEAN collection

The watches in The OMEGASeamaster Planet Ocean collectionhave been held in equally high regardfor their professional divers' features, their style and their innovative Co-Axial technology since they werereleased in 2005. This year OMEGAis proud to be expanding the family.

Like every Planet Ocean, the new watch-es are ready for underwater adventure andare equipped with unidirectional rotatingbezels, helium escape valves and water resist-ance to 60 bar / 600 metres /2000 feet.

The applied indexes on the dials are coat-ed with white Super-LumiNova emitting ablue light as are the polished, facetted rhodi-um-plated hands. The exception is theminute hand which emits a green light, as

does the dot on the diving bezel. This featuremakes it easy for divers to keep track of theirtime at a glance.

And as Seamaster Planet Ocean wrist-watches, they are powered by OMEGA'sexclusive Co-Axial calibres. Each one isequipped with a silicon balance spring andthe combination is so stable and reliable thatOMEGA offers all of the new Planet Oceanwatches with a full four-year warranty.

Essential lines and a classic look describe the essence of the Eratochron, thenewest addition to enrich Buccellati’s range of watches.

It’s name means “desired” or lovely” and is the Muse of lyric poetry, particu-larly in the theme of love. She also has the fifth to live up the lust for love in everyone.

The watch is very simple yet strikingly elegant. A rectangular case in gold thatis entirely engraved holds the dial and is paired with a simple leather bracelet to balancethe extravagance. The elegance of the dial comes untouched to the admirer’s sight withthe winding mechanism hidden in the back of the case.

With so many combinations of execution it renders the Eratochron a cus-tomizable watch: the dial can be in mother-of-pearl, engraved or technical; leatherbracelets are available in different colors and variations; the case can be set with pre-cious stones from one to three rows.

No better saying than “less is more” describes the Eratochron watch. It is anexample of how a simple and flowing design can fascinate and seduce.

ERATOCHRON collection

he main design accomplishments of theBuccellati clan span four decades: from the1920’s to the 1960’s. The most distinctiveaspect of the design house pieces is their rich

textural quality. As one jewelry historian put it, “Everybit of surface is worked and finished, whether visible ornot, with many different engraving techniques."

When the process is finished, the surface of aBuccellati piece often resembles a fine fabric: linen, tulle, lace. Piercing techniques recreate the look ofhoneycomb, lace, or webbing. Use of mixed metals(silver and gold, platinum and gold) is also typical. Ifgemstones are used at all, they are often unusual: largecabochons, carved emeralds and rubies, rose-cut dia-monds. Naturalistic motifs are common fare. Thepieces are bold and instantly recognizable as Buccellati.

he underlying message that is intricately woventhrough out each Armenta collection is to challengethe status quo, embrace diversity, and embrace thestruggle to make a difference. Change does not come

easily and does not come without sacrifices.

I am inspired by other artists and great leaders, and theirstories they tell through their art or the struggles that they haveovercome. Therefore, many of the pieces are inspired byfamous works of art found throughout Spain, such as poetry, paintings, architecture, and sculptures. Certain pieces are phys-ical representations of images found in works of art, which isto pay homage to the artist’s message of inspiration.

For me jewelry is about the creative process and the deepermeaning behind art. Designs often come to me at night or in adream. Therefore, I believe that it should not be limited by oneelement, but rather explore all elements and create the unexpected.

In search of my own Duende I discovered a window into thework of Spain’s most famous and important poet of the twenti-eth century, Federico García Lorca. I've been captivated byLorca's idea of "duende".

I believe thatthrough art wehave a voice and amessage that needsto be heard....

Thus duende is a power and not a behavior; itis the struggle that one must endure to create somethingof greatness”.

Each piece of jewelry that is hand crafted within ourstudio tells a story. And after hours and hours of workon each piece, finally, there are those moments when weknow--not from our thoughts, but from the "duendethat climbs inside . . . from the soles of the feet"--thatwhat we are creating is magical.

I strive to push the boundaries and attempt the unexpect-ed. I believe in unleashing the creative force within. Like apainter, I explore working with and mixing many differentmetals and stones to create a beautiful work of art.

Our partnership is not only a great opportunity tosell beautiful jewelry, but also to tell an amazing storyabout inspiration and dreams that will hopefully inspireothers. The story behind the men and women whowork at the studio is truly one of inspiration andembodies the American Dream. y first surprise cameearly that day.“Now what?” I asked

sheepishly, as I staredout Michael’s apartment windowat the sun. Its rays filtered throughthe rain clouds that had threat-ened the city all week.

This was totally my fault.

He’d wanted to go upstateto Cornell University that week-end, but I’d pushed it off. “It’sgoing to rain,” I said again andagain. Michael persisted through-out the week, trying every which

way to convince me to go. But the weatherman held tight to hisprediction and I didn’t want to make the four-hour drive to asoggy campus. Michael agreed, and we decided to stay in the cityand find a movie.

Now the brilliant sun mocked me. It was Fourth of July week-end and we were not up in Ithaca, where we’d met in French Litclass five years earlier, but in NYC with no real plans.

So we did what young couples living in the city did when theycouldn’t think of anything to do. We took a walk. A long walk, meandering through the streets, winding our way to the SouthStreet Seaport.

Back in 1992, the Seaport was bustling with shops and restau-rants. We poked around the stores. I examined the clothes andtourist trinkets with Michael by my side, who all the time keptone hand protectively on the heavy black backpack he’d insistedon toting. “There are sweatshirts inside in case it rains,” heexplained to me. The clouds had long disappeared but, I couldn’tfault him for being prepared. As we’d learned, the weathermanwasn’t all that reliable.

We stopped to watch an African drum performance thenheaded into J.Crew. After weighing the merits of crewneck versusrollneck sweaters, Michael announced he was ready to move on.We left the store and headed down the sidewalk.

“Excuse me, Miss!” a deep voice called.I kept walking, deciding which store to hit next.

“Miss, we need to ask you to stop.” The voice was nearly in my ear.

M

“Now.”

Three New York City police officers confronted me. Navyuniforms, hats, batons hanging from belts, guns at the ready inholsters. These men meant business.

“We saw you take that sweater,” the heaviest one said.

“What sweater?” What’s he talking about? I wondered.

“You were spotted shoplifting,” the officer with the mustacheaccused. “In J. Crew.”

My heart thumped with panic.

“I wasn’t even in that store,” I blurted.

I didn’t know why I’d just lied. I had been in the store, but Ihadn’t taken anything. My mind whirled. None of this madesense. I should’ve told the truth, I realized. Why were these threecops giving me the evil glare?

“Miss, we saw you.” The first officer’s tone had grown evenmore serious. “We need to look at your bag.”

“No, no, no!” I repeated frantically. I turned to Michael, allthis while standing silently by my side. He shrugged helplessly.Seriously? I thought. He’s not going to do anything?

The third officer reached out his hand. Frantically, I tossedhim my handbag. “Search me. I don’t have anything!” I insisted. My voice came out shrill and shaky.

The first officer unclipped a set of silver handcuffs from hisbelt. “You are being arrested on charges of shoplifting—“

“No! No!” I couldn’t manage to say anything else. Arrested? What was going on here?

The officer turned to Michael. “Would you like to read herher rights?”

My thoughts were in a complete jumble. Michael had gradu-ated law school a couple weeks earlier, but the police couldn’tknow that. Why are they asking him to help arrest his girlfriend?I expected Michael to come loudly to my defense.

“Sure,” Michael replied. He sounded confident and complete-ly unconcerned. He stepped toward me.I gaped at him.

Then he bent down on one knee. “You have the right to beproposed to . . . You have the right to be happy for the rest ofyour life . . . You have the right to marry the most wonderfulman in the world.”

A crowd of about three dozen onlookers had gathered. Thethree officers grinned. I stared at Michael. I still didn’t get it.Michael reached into his backpack and withdrew a small velvetbox. Slowly he opened it, revealing the sparkling diamond ring.

What does this have to do with stealing a sweater? I thought,my brain several steps behind the action.

“Will you marry me?” he asked. The crowd pushed closer. I didn’t answer. This was way toomuch too fast.

“Will you marry me?” Michael asked again, his tone less surethan before.

“A crowd of about three dozen onlookers had gathered. The three officers grinned. I stared at

Michael. I still didn’t get it. Michael reached intohis backpack and withdrew a small velvet box.”

For the first time that hour, one thing suddenly made sense--the man I loved had just asked me to marry him!

“Yes!” I cried. “Yes!” I threw myself into his arms. The crowdcheered as we kissed.

Michael reached into his backpack again and pulled out abottle of Champagne. One of the officers reached for it andpopped the cork. Then they toasted us, enjoying their part inthe scheme that had totally surprised me and nearly scared meto death.

Michael had known that I suspected for a while that a pro-posal was coming. My birthday had passed a month earlier and, instead of the ring I’d been expecting, the present in the way-too-large-to-be-a-ring box was rollerblades. Then his law schoolgraduation came and went with pomp and circumstance andstill no ring. I’d started to believe that I’d been mistaken or a bitpremature in my suspicion. But Michael had the ring and waswaiting for the right time. Above all, he wanted me to be totallysurprised.

He made elaborate and romantic plans to propose to me inthe college classroom where we’d met. When I outright refusedto travel up there in the rain, he was forced to improvise. He’dstuck the ring and the Champagne in his backpack, hoping theright opportunity to surprise me would show itself. Whilewatching the African dancers, he’d spotted the cops. Telling mehe had to use the restroom, he sneaked off and enlisted theirhelp. He came up with the shoplifting scam on the spot—theperfect surprise, knowing I’d never suspect a proposal thatinvolved handcuffs! And he was right.

We will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary thissummer, and he’s never stopped surprising me—with trips, jew-elry, and the love he gives me and our daughters every day.Luckily, my proposal was the one and only time I was detainedby the police!

While the pure lines of today’s Transoceanare strongly reminiscent of the finest classicchronograph of the 1950s, the new modelreinterprets them in a resolutely contempo-rary style. The elegant case is distinguishedby its perfectly understated design, magni-fied by a smooth, slender bazel with a

beveled profile and streamlined lugs molding the wrist. The epitomeof simplicity. The classic and round pushpieces, an nod to the firstwater resistant pushpieces, lend a subtle vintage touch, while the large“baton” type straight-line hands, highlighted by a luminescent sub-stance, convey a more modern aura. A prime example of clarity andreadability, the dial features meticulously refined details such asapplied hour-markers, counters that are finely recessed and “snailed”and an 18k gold rendering of the initial B that served for many yearsas the brand emblem.

DIAMOND DREAM FINE JEWELERS BEST PROPOSAL CONTEST

SECOND PLACE: KIRSTEN & GABE

OUR STORY....After 4 years of dating, living together for over ayear, and getting a puppywe had been hearing forquite a while, "When areyou guys gettingengaged?" "When do youthink he'll ask you?"etc....

We didn't even know how to answer. I started saying, "When hedecides he likes me enough?" Eventually, we both started telling people "We're getting engagednext Tuesday. Definitely next Tuesday." (remember this part)Gabe's 30th birthday was August 26, 2012. We were at a wed-ding on his birthday so I planned to give him his present onMonday. I had been teasing him for weeks about the fact thathe would never guess his birthday present. (I gave him 20guesses and he still didn't get it) What I didn't know was thatGabe was planning to propose the next week....

His birthday present was a glider plane ride over theDelaware Water Gap and Kittany mountains scheduled forMonday the 27th. Unfortunately the weather did not agreewith a glider plane ride on Monday. We re-scheduled for thenext morning.

On Tuesday, August 28th Gabe planned to propose. We wereleaving for a week of vacation in Newport, Rhode Island thatday. His original plan was to propose at sunset, on the beach,in Newport but since the glider plane ride was rescheduled wewouldn't have made it in time. Gabe thought on his feet....We got to the Blairstown, NJ airport and began our flight. Thesmall plane towed us to 3,000 feet and as I was gazing at theincredible scenery Gabe reminded me "It's next Tuesday." Ithought to myself, "Yeah, I know it's Tuesday." I turnedtowards him and suddenly saw he had pulled a ring from hispocket! I was absolutely speechless. He said, "Kirsten, this is anamazing birthday present, butwhat would be even more amaz-ing is if you spent the rest ofyour life with me." .... I SAID YES!!!!!!!!!!!

After a thumbs up fromthe pilot, we glided back

down to safety and to ournew beginning.
