L’obbligo scolastico dovrebbe arrivarefino a 18 anni.

A volte è necessario copiare queste cose.

I have no idea bout the kind of creature that Nessiemight be.

But, for me, this is a very interesting questionbecause the monster looks like a dragon and thismythological animal is a constant in all the greatestcultures in the world.

In China, they honour this animal and call a year“The Year of the Dragon”. In Europe, we have a lot oflegends about dragons (e.g. Saint George’s). And evenin South America they have a great serpent with fea-thers.

I think that it cannot be a coincidence.

I suppose that, in the past, dragons must havebeen real creatures which disappeared without leavingany trace, so Nessie could have been the last survivingdragon. But how many years might a dragon live?

Could it be the same dragon in 565 d.C. and 1934?Ifthe answer is ‘no’, how many dragons are there in theLoch Ness? At last two, a male and a female, who wereable to reproduce.

Last year, a group of scientist went to Loch Nessand combed the area and the bottom of loch. Theyfound nothing at all.

If Nessie, a couple of Nessies or a lot of Nessies hadbeen there, somebody must have seen them.

Therefore, I think Nessie is a beautiful animal oflegend which must have existed in the past but notnowadays.

My new city

Dear Peter:

Hi, Peter. How are you? I am happy in my newcity, there are a lot of old buildings, but not new ormodern ones. There are some big houses, but thereare not any apartments downtown. In the centre ofthe city, there is a big square with a heavy statue ofa military. Behind that monument, there is a bigMuseum, a cheap restaurant, a dirty bar, a narrowcinema and a big theatre, but there is not a libraryor a supermarket. There are some good roads, atrain station and a little airport too, but there is notan underground station. We do not have an under-ground station, but blue buses are very fast andcheap.

I usually go running in the park. It is very green inthe spring, and I love the ducks. They live in the lakeof the park and they swim very well. I love looking atthem for hours. Then I go for a walk. I sometimes walkalong the beach (yes Peter, we have long beaches nearthe city too).

The typical food in the city is seafood and fish, but people prefer seafood. There are some restau-rants, which cook seafood very well, I like it verymuch. The favourite drinks in this town are soft fruitdrinks (orange, lemon, apple, banana…..). They arevery sweet and expensive.

In the summer I like getting up very early. Then Ihave breakfast at eight and I go running along thebeach. The sea is not very cold. Then I relax in thesun. At midday, I go to the bar near the beach, and Ihave a soft drink. I look at the sea. I also have a goodtime. At two thirty or three, I have lunch with myfamily. In the evening, I go cycling round the city. Ialways have dinner late, and I go to bed very verylate and very very tired.

I hope to see you soon Peter and I hope to meetyour girlfriend. Bye Peter.

My town

I live in a small town. Its name is Celerotes. Thereare a small airport and a big beach in the centre. Wehave a big park with a lot of trees, and a lake withgeese. There is a small bridge too, and a modern squa-re with a big statue. North of the square, you can see amuseum and, behind the museum, there is a bar and atheatre. On the left of the square there is a small scho-ol, an old church, a cinema and a pizzeria.....

There are always some people in the square and inthe park. The train station is in the middle of the townand there are some restaurants.

In the summer I always like going to the beach inthe morning. I like running on the beach. At midday Ioften like going to the bar and drinking one beer. In theafternoon, I go to the park and I watch the lake. In theevening, I generally go to the cinema, then I go to therestaurant or to the pizzeria. Then I also go to parties.

In the winter, life is different. My town is alwaysvery cold. I can’t go to the beach and in the afterno-on I can’t go to the park. I go to the museum in theafternoon. I sometimes go to the theatre or the cine-ma in the evening. I never go to church. In my townthere isn’t a university, there isn’t a zoo, there aren’tmany people and there aren’t tall buildings.

In my town we like good food and good drinks. Inthe summer, we like having a light breakfast. We havesome toast, fruit juice or cereals. We have lunch atthree o’clock. We have pasta, salad, meat or omelet-te....For tea, we always have ice cream and we oftenhave a light dinner (soup, boiled eggs or fish). We don’tlike eating much in the summer. In my town, thefavourite drink in the summer is always beer.

In the winter we eat differently. We have hambur-gers, pancakes or bacon in the afternoon. We havelunch at half past one and we have meat, sausages,steaks.... We also have apple pie, cocoa, cheese....Wealways have a light lunch.

This is my small Celerotes. It’s beautiful. I love it!

Man soll nochSpanisch kennen, wenn man Spanisch studieren will.>>

<<Was glaubst du ist leichter: Deutsch oderSpanisch?>>

In Supermarkt nimmt man so viele Plastik Tüte. Ichsage: "Nein, nein, Danke.

Desenvolvemento

>>>> A orquestra

Page 14: DIALOGOS 2011

14

A orquestra moderna

Timbais, caixa, bombo, pandeireta, pratos, tam-tam, pratiños, crótalos, caixachinesa, maracas, castañolas, claves, güiro, fusta, lira, xiló-fono, vibrafón, campanólo-go,...(4 ou 5 instrumentistas).

Grupo de corda

De 14 a 18 violíns 1, de 12 a 16 violíns 2 , de 10 a14 violas, de 8 a 12 violoncellos, de 6 a 10 contrabai-xos . Ademais a arpa, a celesta e o piano.

The Living/Animated Forest

The film shows the main traditions of Galician peo-ple in a typical village in the past century (around the1930s). The main aspects are the religiosity, the appa-ritions of dead people, the influence of the priest inthe community or the peculiar tradition of going toSaint Andrew of Teixido, a small village in the north ofGalicia. Fiz de Cotobelo (a character of this film)couldn’t go there when he was alive so the traditionsays that he’ll go there when he dies. It also showsthe social structure in Galician in those times with thefigure of the landlord: on the top are the richman(Mr.Dabondo), the police (the civil guard) and thepriest; in the middle are the teacher and the civil ser-vant, on the bottom are the majority of the people(extremely poor). The main story is a love story:Gerardo loves Hermelinda who lives with her evil aunt. After a time, she has to emigrate to A Coruña and lookfor a job so she leaves Cecebre and breaks Gerardo’sheart. I recommend this film because you can learnabout our ancient customs and you can also have fun.The film is directed by José Luis Cuerda and it is basedon the novel written by Wenceslao Fernández Florez.

Blue days

This film is directed byMiguel Santesmases and sta-rred by Oscar Jaenada, JavierPereira and Javier Ríos. Theaction takes place seven yearsago in Galicia where threevery close brothers, Boris,Carlos and Álex, spend theirlast weekend of a holiday inFerrol. These days are bitter and sweet at the sametime because they are going to say goodbye to thefamily house where they used to spend the summer .They sell it and it also means the farewell to theiryouth, the closing of an era. In my opinion, the plot isquite simple, but I liked the fact that the relationshipbetween the brothers wasn't over sentimentalized.

The soundtrack is great, and the fact that the set-ting is in a small town like Ferrol instead of Madrid orBarcelona is interesting and I felt proud of the lands-cape of my town.

I recommend to see this film because it offers aspontaneous and entertaining generational descriptionwhich includes a very representative set of customs ofcoastal Galician villages, like living in the countryside, the night-life and people working as fishermen or far-

mers, as well. Besides, the film shows us how beauti-ful landscapes are here, with amazing beaches and lotsof trees, flowers, forests, lakes, etc. Seeing this film isa good choice if you want to learn more of the lifes-tyle in Galicia and feel how difficult it is to grow upand say goodbye to your youth.

Mondays in the sun (2002)

This moving film was shotin Vigo and its plot goesabout the consequences ofindustrial crisis in cities likeVigo and Ferrol during theeighties.

The reason for this title isone of its scenes, when Santa(the main character, playedby Javier Bardem) and two ofhis colleagues are on a littleship in front of the port of Vigo, taking a “workingclass sunbath”. Santa asks them: “which day istoday?”… One answers “Today is Monday”.

They lost their jobs in the dockyard, and each ofthem had been carrying on building a new future sinceit happened. However they haven’t found a new jobyet and their problems are getting bigger day afterday. The ways they understand their new situation arevery different, going from Santa’s rage against capita-lism and Amador’s desperation.

The film won the best film award in San SebastianFestival in 2003.

The living forest (1987)

The film uses this starting point to tell us the amu-sing relationships between the bandit, a sad ghost wholives in the forest too and the inhabitants of the villa-ge, and their fight to survive in a poor rural communityin Galicia during the first years of the twentieth cen-tury.

The wonderful forest, the great actors’ and actres-ses’ performance and the hilarious scenes make thisfilm a good way of knowing the history of Galicianrural society, and its landscape as well.

The Animated Forest (El Bosque Animado)

The film is based on the book of the same namewritten by Wenceslao Fernández Flórez in 1943 andadapted by Rafael Azcona, the director was José LuisCuerda and the main actors were Alfredo Landa asFendetestas, Fernando Valverde as Geraldo(Fendetestas, best friend who had a prosthetic leg),

Miguel Rellán as Fiz de Cotovelo (the ghost), AlejandraGrepi as Hermelinda, Fernando Rey as Mr D’abondo,Luma Gomez as Marica da fame and more.

The action takes place in the northwest of Spain inGalicia; the film tells the story about the customs andtraditions of the people of that time from a funnypoint of view but showing the hard living conditionsthey had.

Fendetestas will bring the panic in the forest as abandit of his region. But there is a problem, therearen’t many people living in this region, everyoneknows everyone and everyone is too poor so it isgoing to be difficult that someone takes Fendetestastoo seriously. The other actors create parallel storiesthat tell the life, customs and traditions in that time, such as the lost soul (Fiz de Cotovelo) or the poorpeople (Marica da fame).

I recommend it because it is a funny film, full ofsituations that will make us laugh, it’s full of charac-ters representing the Spanish way of life, the strictpriest and Guardia Civil (the police officers), the villa-ge idiot, the old devout women, the rich man and aghost walking around the forest.

Writing about Galicia

This is a short story written by the galician authorAnxel Fole who wrote beautiful tales and stories thatcame from popular oral tradition. In this case , thestory called “Terra do Caurel” (Land of Caurel) tellshow the author listened to stories from the oldest peo-ple in dark cold nights of winter, near a fire, and nextday he wrote them on his notebook.

Actually, the story describes The Mountain Race ofCaurel, placed in the Northwest of the province ofLugo. The author tells about the old 14th centurytower where he lived and worked for some time. Inthis place there were cows, horses, sheeps and heremembers two big dogs called Lusco and Fusco. Theywent with him for walks through the big forest wherewolfs, eagles, bears and deers lived a long time ago. There were rabbits, partridges, and country peoplehunted them. Fishermen were happy too, because ofthe good trouts in The River Lor.

The weather was healthy and there were somefountains with red or white water that people drankand got better. About food, he tells us that people ate

Los gozos y las sombras

It’s a dramatic and historical novel written byGonzalo Torrente Ballester, published in 1957 and set inGalicia the final years of the second Spanish republic.

The novel tells the story of the last traditionalGalician families that lived the change towards thenew industry and the capitalism.

PlotIn an imaginary fishing village, in some point of the

Galician cost, between 1934 and 1936,the social andeconomic change is altering the tradicional order ofthe life.

The old owners of the lands see how the new richpeople take the control of their lands and the fishingfleet resist against the modern industry of the ship-yards.

The return of the last member of one of the fami-lies that has always been governed by ( theChurruchaos),is the last hope to fight for the villageagainst the new owner who dominates with the powerof his money.

The fight includes also the area of the passions, where both men fall in love with the same woman.

Though the novel catches your attention from thebeginning, this one is not successful until to 25 years

after being published, just when Torrente was thinkingabout stopping writing. The director Rafael Moreno adap-ted it for TV and it turns into an authentic publishingphenomenon.

I read this novel when Torrente died (1999) becau-se he’s from Ferrol and I felt curiosity to know some-thing about him.

I must admit that it surprised me pleasingly.

The novel is interesting, easy to read and refletcsfaithfully the Galician’s History.

A lus do candil

“A lus do candil” was written by Anxel Fole. It wasfirst published in 1953. It has eight editions, the lastone in November, 1989 by Galaxia. It tells the story offour noblemen who are enclosed in a tower in the 15thcentury who are isolated because of the snow andspend the time eating and drinking and telling storiesbeside the fire of an oil lamp.

I read it at university and liked it very much. Youcan see stories that tell you about the life in Galiciawhen the families didn’t have any sort of entertain-ment such as TV, radio or DVD and spent the eveningsat home with their neighbours, telling stories round afire in the long winters. It’s a typical tradition inGalicia too. This reminds me of the time which I spentin my granny’s house when I was a child.

One day in Europe

One day in Europe is a comedy about communica-tion troubles and cultural differences between peopleof different nationalities. The language becomes anobstacle to understanding, making English languagethe key for resolving the troubles. Culture shock disap-pears when all have the same needs.

The director, Hannes Storn, creates a commonstage: the day when Deportivo de la Coruña andIstanbul's Galatasaray play the final of the ChampionsLeague. At the same moment takes four Europeancities: Moscow (Russia), Istanbul (Turkey), Santiago deCompostela (Spain) and Berlin (Germany) and creates

Page 31: DIALOGOS 2011

a common framework through which explains the dif-ferent cultures.

Particular idiosyncrasies of each people makessuch an event resulting in different ways. The film'scentral theme is the incommunication that exists ina united Europe. The film takes us to learn from aperspective that varies between drama and comedyof cultural differences as well as life in the cities. One day in Europe is developed in sights and situa-tions are recreated everyday life, so that brings theviewer into a different reality which is not used tostand.

What unites these different cities director eachother and gives coherence to the film? Through a com-mon thread: people who suffer or simulate a theftabroad. This serves as a pretext to discuss culturaltopics of each region.

The film begins with a robbery in Moscow. A busi-ness woman of Germany is involved in a robbery whereshe was taken away all her things. In this situation aneighbor who saw what happened is given to help herwith the complaint for the Russian authorities.

In Istanbul, a young German tourist simulates arobbery to get the insurance. A taxi driver intended tohelp him searching for the thieves The young manwants to be alone but after phone calls for help toleave the police station.

A pilgrim arrives at Santiago de Compostela and suf-fers the theft of his camera where he kept all thememories of the way and go to a policeman to helphim. The policeman, far from worrying, puts their needsbefore the pilgrim, failing to retrieve the camera.

Finally, in Berlin, a young couple of French actorsdecide to simulate a robbery to get the insurance andsolve their economic problems, but the police discove-red the lie and try to arrest

Focusing on the part that takes place in Santiagode Compostela, we used to bring our community knowa little. It should be noted that the director shows theviewer some of the typical scenarios of the city are theQuintana Square, where is the Holy Door, TheCathedral, Toural Square, all of them in the old city.

The actors who are in Santiago de Compostela:Policeman (Barreira’s Sargeant) and Pilgrim (Gabor). The second represents a important figure in the pictu-re and typical of the city, as pilgrims flocked en massefrom all parts of the world to do the Camino deSantiago, ending in Galicia all of them. This phenome-non is perhaps the most representative cultural ele-ment of our community for our historical tradition, which attracts many people and its value for tourism, religious and social. The history of the Camino deSantiago goes back to the ninth century with the dis-covery of the tomb of Santiago Apostol in what is nowthe Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

This event brings thousands of believers fromaround the world on pilgrimage to this city by creatingmore routes, which today is known as "roads." Themost famous of these is called "French Way" (andwhich served as input to Spain the vast majority of pil-grims from Europe, mainly France), but there aremany others who take the name of the place theycame from his Pilgrims “English Way”, “PortugueseWay”, “North Way” ... All this make a architecturalheritage around the Cathedral, UNESCO thereforedecided in 1985 to declare it a World Heritage Site.

It should be noted that 2010 coincided with theJacobean Holy Year, which increase their importance. The relationship of the city with this phenomenon isvery close, as Santiago de Compostela life revolvesaround the road.

Page 32: DIALOGOS 2011

To end, when the actors leave the city in the car,we can see the Galician rural environment with abun-dant vegetation and wooded landscapes of valleys andsmall hills that are a constant in our territory andalong the coast landscape with their sea one of themost important images of Galicia.

Ferrol is the city of the Navy and the shipyards, placed in an estuary considered the best anchorangein the world. If you want to know about this city in theearly 20th century when it was still the cultivated andfreethinking town created by engineers and architectsof de Age of Lightenment, you must read " A MEMORIA-DE FERROL". This book, written by Carlos DíazMartínez and others, is an amazing collection of pos-tcards with some interesting commentaries in Galicianand English. You can discover the monumental andartistic heritage of the city: buildings with galleriesand balconies, churches, dry docks... I extremelyrecommend it. The Carpenter’s Pencil by Manuel Rivas

Set in the summer of 1936, al the beginning of theSpanish Civil War, Rivas tells the tale of Doctor Danielda Barca, a republican and revolutionary. He is in lovewith Marisa Mallo but family prejudice and the effectsof the war keep them apart. The narrator is Herbal, afrancoist soldier, who has killed a painter and keepshis pencil. The pencil whispers in his ear because theghost of the painter is in it, throughout the story.

Herbal, in love with Marisa as well, follows theDoctor from prison to prison… and tells Maria deVisitaçao what he saw, what the prisoners said andhow the love between Daniel and Marisa deepenedand managed to stay alive in those awful days.

The Carpenter’s Pencil is both a movie and a novelfrom the fantastic writer Manuel Rivas, a very wellknown writer in Spain. The story is a romance, aboutthe love that breaks all the barriers and the change ofthe narrator through the story, thanks to a carpenter’spencil.

Mondays in the sun

This is a film directed by Fernando León de Aranoaand starred by Javier Bardem, Luis Tosar and othergood Spanish actors.

The film is set in Vigo which is a very importantindustrial coastal city from the south of Galicia. Thereare a lot of blue-collar workers working in the severalshipyards there. The action takes place in the 70’s.

The film tells the story of a group of these workerswho were given the sack because of the industrial res-tructuring. Every day is Sunday for them. They try toget a new job although it’s impossible because oftheir age so, they spend most of the time drinking, and chatting about their frustrations at the bar. As aresult of this desperate situation, one of them com-mits suicide.

Although the film is really sad, you can find somefunny moments in it. My first impression was that Ididn’t like it, but I think it is worth watching it becau-se this film reflects quite well how hard it is to beunemployed and not to be able to feed your family.Another important reason to watch the film is thatthe acting of all the actors is brilliant. I hope you likeit.

I can recommend Ourense, Valdeorras, the placeis wonderful, and the film was made in it.

The ending of the story didn’t surprise me, howe-ver I liked it.

It’s a film for everybody in a family.

Mar adentro: The Sea Inside

When I think in Galicia, I have always in my mind afilm, "The sea inside" directed by Alejandro Amenavarand starred by Javier Bardem. It is the story aboutsomeone who wants to commit suicide, after havingan accident and being handicapped now. So he cannot

commit suicide without help.

The landscape, the people and the atmosphere ingeneral, reflect quiet well the Galician society, hard-working people, stuborn with a strong peersonality. Ahard past of poverty, with a lot of immigration allaround the world but more specificlly in Europe likeGermany, France, Switzerland, South America and ofcourse the USA.

We can also see in this film the importance of thefamily. Nowadays, we are not so influenced by theparents and grand-parents but in the past, they wereso important. They represented all the values likeauthority, wisdom, etc...

L ´ i n t r i g u e :Pignon est unhomme insignifiant,sa vie n’a aucunintérêt.

pon ronca a voz.

Non é posible renunciar a esa guerra interna quelle vai disputar sempre o territorio á nosa superviven-

cia moral.

I went to Bilbao 4 years ago with all my family-in-law to the wedding of my brother-in-law.

It was on Sunday and we didn’t know any hair-dresser there so the bride said to us that her hair-dresser woild be able to comb us.

Perfect!. I thought, and my sister-in-law, myniece, my daugther and I spent all the morning(from 7 o’clock to 2 o’clock) into the hairdresser’s.

Although there were 4 people working that day, only one of them was with us, and the others werewith the bride: One for her hair, other for her nailsand the other one for the make-up.

The hairdressers and the bride were happy but Istarted to feel nervous when at 12 o’clock only myniece was combed.

I couldn’t believe it!. All the people were talkingand laughing and the time passed quickly.

The bride finished at 1:30 with the just time toget dressed because the wedding was at 2 o’clock.

We arrived late, and the worse was that we werereally ugly! with an awful bun that I’ll never forgetand a make-up that made us look like elderlywomen.

The Price was really expensive. I paid 250€ onlyfor my daugther and me.

I was furious but I couldn’t do anything becausewe hadn’t time so we went to the reception likethat.

The rest of the family were angry with us abouttaking a long time at the hairdresser’s.

Normaly when all things seem to go bad I usuallythink that life is nice and isn’t worth to worry aboutthings like that.

I enjoyed the rest of the day and now we alwayshave a laugh when we watch the photos.

My brother-in–law is separated now and manytimes I think about the money that I spent in that

wedding,(the travel, the hotel, the present, thehairdresser’s, etc).

Too much for nothing

Mª José Cebreiro

Some years ago, when I was a teenager, I went toa hairdressing salon near my home because I deci-ded to cut my hair a little bit. In that time I wasn’treally keen on going to the hairdresser’s but I nee-ded to take care of my hair. It was the first time Iwent to that salon and I didn’t know any hairdresserthere, so it didn’t matter who cut my hair.

A very kind girl was the person who attended to meand she started to cut my hair. I’ve said her that I wan-ted to cut my hair only a little bit and she said I didn’thave to worry. The time was running and my hair wasbeing cut more and more until she stopped and my hairwas very short! At first, I only felt disappointed, butafter a few minutes I began to feel very angry.

I didn’t tell anything to the hairdresser becauseI was very shy, but when I arrived at home I startedto cry because I liked my long dark hair and it haddisappeared. However, a lot of people said me thatI looked very cute with that haircut and in the end Iloved it. It was a very bad experience for me butfinally it had a happy ending.

Marta Talegón Amado

Actually I can’t say I ever had a bad experienceat the hairdresser´s. Since I was a little kid I alwayshad my hair very short being it the most comforta-ble and easy to maintain hairstyle (I know, I’m lazy).

Every time I feel its growing too much (usuallywhen it starts to grown over my ears) I go to my usualhairdresser and have her give me the, as I call it,“lawn mower” cut. It barely takes her 10 minutes, something I’m glad of. I kinda hate the place and theshallow gossip you can’t help but hear there.

I do the beard myself and since I follow the samepremises as with my hair, its quite hard to make amess out of it either (even for a “klutz” like me).

One day I decided to go to my hairdresser to havemy hair cut, but it was closed. Although I could waitone or two days, I decided to try a new hairdresser. Icame into the nearest one and there wasn’t anybody,so I thought “I’m in luck”.

I sat on the chair and he asked me how I wanted tohave my hair cut. As soon as he started to cut it he toldme that my hair was difficult because it grew in a stran-ge way. It was in that moment when I realised that I wasgoing to “suffer” his haircut. I was praying until the endso that the damage was as little as possible. He spentall the time speaking to me. I tried not to speak somuch, though. I only wanted him to concentrate on cut-ting my hair and nothing else. When he finished cuttingmy hair I could see myself in the mirror I looked like astrange pageboy, but I didn’t say anything because if hetried to mend it, maybe I could have a worse damage,so I paid and run away from there.

I swear that I’m not going to go back to that barbernever again. In case my hairdresser is closed, I’ll wait thenecessary.

Moisés Acción

Two months ago, I went to my hairdresser’s becau-se one day I got up, I looked at myself in the mirrorand I shouted “Help, I have grey hair!!!!”, so I phonedto ask for an appointment and they said me “Ok, comeon Friday at 1:00 p.m.

When I arrived I told the hairdresser I wanted to dyemy hair black and she did it. What was the problem?. Thehairdresser’s only has one electric water heater, andFridays are the favourite day for all the customers becau-se of the weekends.

That day it happened they had already used a lot ofhot water and when they had to wash my hair there onlywas cold water. It was a horrible moment because I was

frozen and they only could say “sorry sorry, please excu-se us”.

So I have learned this lesson: when I want to go tomy old hairdresser’s I’ll go from Monday to Thursday, but never on Friday.

Berta Delgado

When I was a child, I had long and straight hair, butwhile I passed 10 years old, my hair began to get wavy. One day, my mother took me to the hairdresser to havemy haircut. There, we realized that the old hairdresserwas gone so I had to have my haircut with her daughter(hairdresser as well).

My mother told her to cut it more or less 4cm andbegan to read a magazine. The girl was cutting my hairand, although I saw dropping my hair a lot, I said nothing. Then, she dried my hair with the air-dryer, my hair star-ted to get shorter and curlier than it used to be, moreand more. At the end I saw myself in the mirror and Iwanted to cry (but I stood with it) because of the result,I looked like an afro girl, with a very short and curly hair…I ran to my house to wash up it again but it was impossi-ble to fix.

Nerea Núñez

The last time I went to have my haircut I sat on thebarber's chair and I said to him: "I want this side of thehead crew-cut, this one side with long curly hair, thisother side with a little ponytail, the back side painted inpink, and a fringe in the left side of the forehead".

After that, he seemed so confused that he asked me:"Why do you want this weird haircut?", and I answeredangry: "Sir, don't you remember that way was the lasthaircut you did?".

Today, I would like to tell you a legend about SantaCompaña, which has been part of the traditionalGalician culture for ages and which has left an imprint, for example in cruceiros (stone crosses at the cossro-ads). Santa Compaña is also known as “a procesión dasánimas” or simply “Compaña”.

According to Galician mythology, dead people´sprocession or (grieving souls - spirits) go round theroads of a village at midnight. These processions areterrifying because the spirits visit all those houseswhere there will soon be a death, so they can havehis/her soul. They also appear in order to confront thestill living person about the serious mistakes they havedone during their life.

Although Santa Compaña´s appearance changesdepending on the place, the most common view con-sists of a group of spirits dressed in black-hoodedtunics who spend all night wandering.

This group of ghosts forms two rows. They arecovered in shrouds and walk around in their bare feet.A bigger spirit called Estadea leads the group. Eachspirit takes a lighted candle and he or she leaves a trailsmelling of wax and incense. Other legends say thatwhen they appear, you can feel an intense cold andhear the sound of chains. Besides, it´s said that thesespirits are like fog.

Another version of this legend is that the proces-sion is headed by a living person, (mortal) carrying across and a cauldron with blessed water, followed bythe group of spirits. They are not always visible, buttheir presence can be felt by the smell of wax and thewind that follows them. They walk saying prayers

(with a little rosary), funeral songs and ringing a littlehandbell.

This living person can be a man or a woman depen-ding on the patron saint of the village (if it is a fema-le or male saint). It is also believed that this personcannot remember anything that happened during thenight, but people can tell he or she has been with theSanta Compana because of their extreme thinness andpaleness.

During the night their candlelight will be intensebut each day their paleness will increase. It is forbid-den to rest at night, therefore their health becomesworse and worse without anyone knowing the reasonsfor their mysterious illness.

The victims wander night after night until they dieor they are interrupted by someone (in this case theperson that heads the procession will gives him/herthe cross that he carries). To avoid being taken, theperson that sees the Santa Compaña must draw a cir-cle on the ground and stand in it or to lie face down. You can also moveout of the way andavoid looking atthem or eating, youmust pray and avoidlistening to the soundof the Compaña andnever take a candleif some ghost wantsto give you one, because this gesturewill sentence you tojoin them.

According to thelegend, SantaCompaña will nottake the soul of amortal if he or she ison the steps on a cru-ceiro placed at acrossroads, or if heor she can get hold ofa cross to ward awaythe spirits.

Intercultural meeting in Nysa-Polonia(2010/ 09.27-10.01)

The EOI Ferrol people met in Santiago’s airport.Soon we discovered, although we were different in ageand life style, we were going to get on very well andwe were straightaway, sharing experiences, jokes andlaughs during all the travel.

We met the Portuguese group at the airport inStansted and we got together by bus to Nysa at 2 in themorning.

The next day, we met the de rest of the groups,Czech, Italian, Polish, Scottish and Turkish in theHouse of Culture and from there, we went to the townhall, where the mayor’s secretary give us the welcometo Nysa.

For almost 500 yearsof its history, Nysa wason the best-known andthe most importantPolish towns. It was thecapital of the bishop’sprincipality. Due towhich it flourished eco-nomically and culturally, but during the SecondWorld War, almost 80 percent of the town wasdestroyed.

Its inhabitants put continuous effort into thereconstruction and renovation of the re-maining frag-ments of the town’s former glory and nowadays thecity still has historical buildings, full of various treasu-res and old parks and fortifications as well.

Our point of enjoyment, in Nysa was “Kazamaty”,a nice and comfortable pub, where we could tastePolish food and of course Polish vozka and bear.

Nights there, were fantastic and great fun, includingkaraoke sessions where all of us took part, singingand dancing.

But, after long and lovely nights, we were ready, very early to know other interest pla-ces like Weliczka, where we visited the Salt Mine, one of the most tou-ristic places in Poland that it was nominated as aHistorical Monument by UNESCO IN 1994

We walked into a part of the excavations, joinedby galleries with a length of 300 Km at a depth of 64to 327 m. We were specially surprised with the won-derful chapel “St.Kinga” inside of the mine at a depthof 101 m. under the earth.

But the day didn’t finish here. In the evening, wegot to Krakov, regarded one of the most beautifultowns in the world. The medieval city in Krakov is fullon rich archi-tecture with beautiful examples of rena-centist, baroque and gothic building.

There is a legend about the city:

In the medieval age, Krakus, the most legend lea-der, built a setting in the Wawel hill, above a cavewhere a fierce dragon lived. Many knights tried to killthe dragon without success, so a cobble, calledDratewka, gave it one sheep full in sulphur and thedragon ate it and drunk the water of the Vistula river,so it exploded.

In this same hill, Wawel, we visited the RoyalCastle and the Cathedral.

Before leaving Krakov, we were also walkingaround the Market Square where we bought some sou-venirs of traditional amber.

Although the rain and cold came with us during allthe walk, they weren’t obstacles to enjoy and admirethis wonderful town. 61

And….other early morning….and other interestingplace to visit. But this time the place is gloomy knownby its tragic humanity horror. Auschwitz.

When we come back to Nysa, our Polish hostessreceived us with a Medieval Dinner in one fortifica-tion in a beautiful place into the forest. They per-formed fights and medieval dances. It was a funnydinner which finished with a nice fire show by jug-glers.

Next day, in the House of Culture in Nysa, we sha-red funny workshops, making masks and sharing foodand wine from all countries. It was a succulent lunchwhere the wine disappeared, immediately.

In the afternoon, each group did a presentation oftheir activity. At the end of the event, we enjoyed thefestival of dancing and singing groups. Night endedwith a dance party where we wore our masks. It wasour farewell party.

But we still had a good surprise in our return. Weshared the travel to Wroclaw, where we would takethe plane, with Portuguese and Scottish groups. From there, each group took their own way toreturn.

We had enough time to discover Wroclaw like awonderful city. In a sunny day we walked around thecity, full of beautiful and historical buildings, squaresand bridges.

Wroclaw is the capital of Down Silesia, and it’s oneof the oldest cities of Poland. It is situated at the edgeof Oder River, divided into several channels with morethan 100 bridges. The city is known like the PolishVenice.

We were in the Grand Square (Rynek), joined tothe Salt Square (Salmy), where there were a nicestrret market full on handcrafts and typical Polish pro-ducts. We crossed the Grunwaldzki Bridge, wherelovers leave little padlocks as a token of love. We dis-covered in each step a nice bridge or a nice building, really the city is lovely, but we had to leave, to get tothe airport to arrive Rome.

We arrived in Rome at 8 pm and after stopping inthe hotel, in one hour we just were in the Fontana deTrevi. We had delicious pizzas in one traditional pizze-ria and we walked to the Piazza de Spagna , where werested of an exhausting journey.

Without sleeping, we took our luggage out of thehotel, and we went to the airport to come back toSantiago.

It was a very special, interesting and funny travel, where people were the best.

A week-trip to Turkey

First of all, I would like to acknowledge the staffof the official school of languages in Ferrol for leadingthe intercultural patchwork between the seven parti-cipating countries. Let alone, the jealousy of a relati-ve of mine from Madrid asking me if EOI-Ferrol was theonly one in Spain participating in this project… initia-tive and hard work was my answer.

Six students and three teachers, after participa-ting in different cultural activities such as photographycompetition, reading and commenting books, watchingother countries films and exchanging ideas in multila-teral videoconferences; finally enjoyed a week-jour-ney to Turkey with a busy programme full of activities.

The first day in Turkey consisted of a warm welcomeby the Mayor and other politicians, in Darica’s Council, followed by a sightseeing tour on foot along the city. After a delicious meal, all of us participated in differentworkshops in the Public Training Center including hair-dressing, paper marbling (“Ebru Sanati” in Turkish), dra-wing, sewing, embroidering, handcraft and cooking(“dolma” and coffee making). Of course, Galician teamprepared a “queimada” for them, “conxuro” included.

We also visited the Asian and European sides ofIstanbul, eating out not only kebabs, but Turkish spicyfood, white fish by the Bosphorus Sea, sweet baklavawith tea, followed by the Damat Halayi Turkish dancewhich, I can assure you, is quite funny(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNBh4DARsbY&feature=related)

Besides that, we could pop in many mosques suchas The Blue one, Hagia Sophia and others where themuslims pray daily five times. Although we visitedlots of mosques, we also had time enough to do someshopping in the species market and the bazaar. Weeven visited the zoo and archeological museum inKocaeli. Other top attractions were Galata tower &bridge and crossing the Marmara Sea by ship. To high-light and liked me the most, were The Cisterns, akind of buried cave beneath Istanbul, built during the5th century in order to storage water and supply it tothe citizens.

However, what really stroke me the most, wasthe contrasts between day and night in Istanbul, theAsian and European sides, the balanced chaotic wayof life and, to end, the soul and hospitality of Turkishpeople.

Visiting Turkey

Our trip to Turkey was a really nice experience. It´s completely different when you travel alone towhen you travel with a group, in our case, a big group, but it was really funny and enriching. We met peoplefrom different countries and all together knew anamazing country: Turkey.

Our hosts: teachers, students and staff fromDarica Public Training Centre were some of the mosthospitable people that I have ever met.

We visited Darica, Kocaeli and Istanbul. This lastone is an enormous city and you can change fromthe Asian side to the Europe side in one day. Twocontinents in a few minutes! There are a lot of mos-ques everywhere and when you hear the call to prayis a sensation that I have never felt. If you want toknow Istanbul well, you´ll need a week minimum.

Wealso had the opportunity to taste every day dif-ferent Turkish food: delicious food, too spicy andsweet, but delicious.

In spite of the weather being a little bit bad (it sno-wed a lot!!) we could do lots of things, travel and walk.

Page 64: DIALOGOS 2011

64

All together we shared our cultures in differentmoments: we danced typical Turkish dances, we sangtypical songs from Portugal, we did a Queimada…

It is very difficult to summarize the entire trip in afew words. However, if I had to choose, I would saythat Turkey is a beautiful country with lovely people. And of course I will go back.

Meeting Scotland

It was drizzling the night we landed in Scotland. The Scottish rain did not want to miss our welcome butrespected us during the rest of the visit. The 9th ofMay 2011 we started excited our adventure.

Our hotel was in Falkirk, the town whose Counciltook part in the Intercultural Patchwork Project. It is aquiet place in the lowlands in between Glasgow andEdinburgh. Guided by the locals we saw its forests andother interesting places, such as the Falkirk Wheel orthe Callendar House.

Every morning we atten-ded the Scottish lessons theyhad prepared for us, explai-ned by Malcom McDonald,English and Scottish teacherfor foreigners at the Council. We learned while laughing, singing and dancing.

Apart from Falkirk and itssurroundings, we could notlet go the chance of visitingGlasgow and Edinburgh, two

cities as important in the country as different betwe-en them. I can not choose one of them but, why cho-osing? It is like your mother and father, they are quitedifferent but you love both the same way.

What we will always remember is the peoplethere. Scots are so friendly, kind and funny. In fact, allpeople from all around Europe who I met there see-med to me so nice. In this trip I knew first hand thatwe are not that different. No matter where you arefrom, once you cross the language barrier, there arenot other frontiers separating us.

The 14th May we left Scotland sadly, although onepiece of our hearts is staying there forever.

No Funchal as trêsmaiores ribeiras transbordaram, causando grande des-truição.
