Love’s Executioner: “If Rape Were Legal” Patient: Carlos Symptoms: - Rare, slow growing lymphoma - Deeply depressed - Isolated o No social life - Desires sex o No sex life = masturbation o Talked about women and sex (obsessed) o Fixation with women o Infatuated with Sarah o Didn’t want to sabotage his sexual chances with women - Curious about rape o If rape were legal, he’ll do it - Fear of being abandoned by his children - More unsocialized than malignantly antisocial - Deathly ill in chemotherapy - Experiences such as work problems - Capable of gross behavior and worse - Verbal assaults and physical abuse o Pinching himself o Pounding his head against the wall - Afraid of being pitied - If his cancer worsens, he was actively facing death, then he becomes more thoughtful, compassionate, wiser - Oedipal competition between the therapist and him - Closed and defensive -
