Purpose of the Study

What is the purpose of the Diabetes Education Kiosk (DEK)? To provide information about diabetes and to promote and facilitate diabetes self‐management To share information on type 2 diabetes with members of local communities and organizations To find out if touchscreen computers in clinics help teach participants about diabetes self‐management and help them manage their type 2 diabetes

Who should use the DEK? The DEK is targeted at individuals who are at‐risk or have been diagnosed with diabetes.

Who is sponsoring this study? The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) has funded the local Center for Community Health Development as a Prevention Research Center. We are located at the School of Rural Public Health at Texas A&M Health Science Center.

What happens when the DEK is used? The computer program guides the participant through several topics related to the causes, prevention, and management of diabetes. When participants start using the DEK, they will be asked if their use can be tracked by the computer. The computer will then track the pages viewed most often and for how long. This information is tracked in a confidential manner and will not identify participants in any way because the computer will assign a random number to the computer user.

Are there any risks? No risks are associated with the use of the DEK. Participants have the option to use the DEK without being tracked and do not have to fill out the questionnaire afterwards, however this information is vital to the development and improvement of the DEK. Any information that participants choose to provide will remain strictly confidential. Participants can stop (quit) using the DEK at any time.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

The following is the MOU agreed upon by both ___________ and the Center for Community Health Development.

Expected contributions from ___________: Provide a space for the DEK within the clinical setting while ensuring user’s privacy through DEK placement Have at least 3 staff members participate in DEK training (e.g., management, front line supervisor, and receptionist) Have staff review the DEK Quick Start Guide for DEK operation use Refer patients and others to use the DEK Collect DEK evaluation/feedback through questionnaires and staff observations Collect a minimum of 90 surveys within a two month period (about 10 surveys/wk) Provide questionnaires in an accessible form so that participants can easily obtain a form and return (place a box with blank surveys and a box to return filled out forms) Maintain the DEK—ensure that the DEK is functional every day. This can be done by periodically checking that the computer and monitor is on at different points during the day (morning, midday, afternoon), ensuring cables are plugged in, checking printer for jams, missing paper, etc. Troubleshoot as necessary. If unsuccessful, contact CCHD staff for immediate attention. Maintain bi‐weekly communication with CCHD staff. This includes troubleshooting, data collection, and operation of DEK.

Front staff plays a vital role in the development of this project. Without their assistance in guiding and reminding patients and other individuals to use the DEK, our goal of providing diabetes health education would be less successful.

• What You Can Learn from the DEK

Using the DEK To use the touch screen, lightly tap the buttons on the screen. Press and release.

Participants  simply  touch  the  language  that  they  feel  comfortable  using  and  then  select  a  topic  that  they  would  like  to  learn  more  about.  Participants  will  then  read  and  listen  to  some

dialogue  on  how  to  prevent  or  manage  diabetes.  Printing  options  are  also  available.

Troubleshooting

Frequently Asked Questions

Most problems can be resolved by restarting the DEK, checking loose connections, or power cables.

Why  can’t  I  see/hear  anything?  Why  is  the  screen  white?  • Sound, video, and touchscreen problems are usually a loose connection or power

problem.

• If the monitor is blank, double check that the touchscreen did not turn off the monitor. The monitor turns blank when the touchscreen is too close to the monitor’s power button.

• If the screen is white, there was an error with the program and we recommend restarting the machine.

The  printer  isn’t  working.  • Double check that all the cables are plugged in properly. • Check that there is paper in the printer • Check to see if there are any paper jams • If the printer is out of ink, please contact project staff and we will replace the ink

cartridge.

• We have provided some moistened towels to clean the screen. If they have run out, please contact us and we will replace them as soon as possible.

• We recommend users clean the screen after every use.

• Please contact project staff and they will deliver the necessary materials as soon as possible.

If the problem persists after attempting to troubleshoot, please contact project staff.
