Día de los Muertosby:Naomi JosephJesse Coppess
Hoy, today is October 31st. My mama and I are visiting el cemeterio, the cemetery.
Mama notices that there is un niña crying over a grave. I know the girl, es Yolanda, mi amiga.
"Yolanda, how come you're so sad?" I asked. "I miss mi abuela, she was my best friend," she replied.
"She will be coming to visit tomorrow, you don't need to be sad," I told her. My mama told her to join us and we would cheer her up.
Yolanda comes with us back to nuestra casa, our house.
"It's time to make el pan de muerto," mi mama called. "What is that?" Yolanda asked.
"It's one of the many ways we celebrate día de los muertos," Mama replied. "What is day of the dead?" said Yolanda.
I told her that it is a time that we celebrate los recuerdos, the memories, of those that have passed.
"How do you do that?" asked Yolanda. Mi mamá answered, "We will show you."
We continued making the bread. We also were preparing the ofrendas with the marigolds.
Yolanda seemed to be having fun and forgot about how sad she seemed earlier.
We then took all the preparations out to the cemetery and waited.
Yolanda's parents were at the cemetery as well. Mi mamá invited them to celebrate with us.
Yolanda ran to her parents in her excitement, explaining her new understanding about El Día de Los Muertos.
Soon all the other families joined us at the cemetery. The feast and celebrations began as well.
What a great Día de Los Muertos!
