Au nom de l’IAAF, c’estavec grand plaisir que jerédige cette préface pourle bulletin de l’édition2005 des Championnatsdu Monde de Cross-Country de l’IAAF. Les Championnats duMonde de Cross-Countryexistent, plus ou moinssous la même forme,depuis le début du20ème siècle ; ils méritentleur réputation decompétition nonseulement la plusancienne, mais aussi laplus rude de toutl’athlétisme mondial.Tous les coureurs defond veulent gagner lesChampionnats du

Monde de Cross ! Aprèsles grandiosescompétitionsd’athlétisme de 2004,auxquelles se rattachentbien entendu lesmoments de gloire vécuslors des Jeux Olympiquesd’Athènes, nousespérons que les étoilesdu firmament sportifparticiperont à cetteprochaine édition desChampionnats duMonde de Cross-Country.Et sans même sepréoccuper de savoirquelles starsindividuelles y prendrontpart, le “plus” apportépar les courses paréquipes transforment à

chaque fois cettemanifestation en festivalannuel de la course defond. Les compétitionspar équipes dans toutesles catégories, hommeset femmes, seniors etjuniors, ainsi que labataille qui s’ensuit pourles points confèrent sonesprit unique auxChampionnats. Tout un week-end decourses - le programmeinclut des épreuves decourses Juniors et decourses courtes - avecdes équipes venues detous les coins dumonde, garantissent lavenue de spectateurs enmasse.

Bien que larenomméeinternationale de larégion soit dueessentiellement aux“Verts”, l’équipe defootball de Saint-Etienne, qui fut lacélébrité de l’Europedes années 70 et 80,la France est l’un desplus grands pays dumonde en termes deculture athlétique ;elle a organisé nonseulement les récentsChampionnats duMonde d’Athlétismede l’IAAF de ParisSaint-Denis, avec unegrande maestria, maiségalement, au fil des

ans, un très grandnombre d’autrescompétitionsd’athlétisme de hautniveau. Avec une telleexpérience, je ne doutepas que le comitéorganisateur de Saint-Etienne - Saint-Galmiertravaillera d’arrache-pied lors des mois àvenir afin que cettemanifestationmarque encorede sonempreinteun grandchapitre dansles livresd’histoire del’athlétisme.

On behalf of the IAAF, Iam very pleased to writethis foreword for thebulletin of the 2005edition of the IAAF WorldCross CountryChampionships. The World Cross CountryChampionships has beenaround, in more or lessthe same format, sincethe early days of the 20thcentury, and deserves itsreputation not just as theoldest, but one of thetoughest competitions inathletics world. Everydistance runner wants towin the World Cross!After such great athletics

competitions in 2004,including of course theAthens Olympic Games,we hope that the topstars of the sport willtake part in the nextedition of the WorldCross Country. Yetregardless of whichindividual starsparticipate, the addedteam element at theevent always makes it anannual festival of longdistance running. Theteam competitions in allcategories, men andwomen, senior andjunior, and the ensuingbattle for points give the

Championships a uniquespirit.A full weekend of racesincluding Junior andShort course events, withteams from every cornerof the world, is alsocertain to bring out thecrowds in strength.Although the region maybe most famous aroundthe world for “Les Verts”the Saint-Etiennefootball team that was astar of Europe in the1970s and 1980s,France is one of thegreatest countries in theworld in terms ofathletics culture, and has

organised not only therecent IAAF WorldChampionships inAthletics in Paris St-Denis with great aplomb,but many, many othertop athleticscompetitions over theyears.With this sort ofexperience, I amconfident that the localorganising committee ofSaint-Etienne - Saint-Galmier will be workinghard over the nextmonths to ensure theevent marks anothergreat chapter in theathletics history books.

editoChers amis sportifs,Le département de la Loire estun département sportif.La ville de Saint-Galmier estune ville sportive et l'adémontré à de nombreusesreprises.Nous sommes particulièrementsensibles au fait que laFédération Nationaled'Athlétisme ait choisi notreville pour organiser ce mondialde Cross-country.Notre hippodrome et lesinstallations annexes répondentà toutes les exigences ducahier des charges.Nous ferons tout et nosbénévoles seront très présentspour que cette manifestationinternationale soit un réelsuccès.

Je ne voudrais pas oublier laville de Saint-Etienne et sonMaire, mon collègue et amiMichel THIOLLIÈRE, aveclequel nous avons déjàorganisé des manifestationstrès importantes et dont lesuccès est la suite logique decette collaboration efficaceentre deux villes qui, tout enétant très différentes quant àla population, partagent lemême idéal quant au sport.Nous souhaitons ensembleque les 19 et 20 marsprochains, la Loire, Saint-Etienne, Saint-Galmier maisaussi la France entièrepuissent vibrer aux exploitsdes participants à ceChampionnat du Monde deCross Country.

Le rendez-vous mondialdu Cross a lieu à Saint-Galmier. C'est heureuxqu'un championnatmajeur du calendrierpuisse se dérouler dansune région aussiaccueillante et aussidynamique que celle dudépartement de la Loireen Rhône-Alpes.Il faut remercierchaleureusementl'ensemble desCollectivités localespour le défi qu'elles ontsu magnifiquementrelever en acceptant un

tel événement.Sans leur forteimplication sur le plande l'organisation et dufinancement, cettecompétition n’aurait puavoir lieu.La région Rhône-Alpes,le département de laLoire, la ville de Saint-Etienne, la ville deSaint-Galmier et Saint-Etienne Métropole onttous répondu présentspour aider les bénévolesde l'Athlétisme ligériendans cette initiative, sivalorisante pour notre

The 2005 IAAF WorldCross CountryChampionships will takeplace in Saint-Galmier.It is fortunate that a majorchampionship of thecalendar could take placein such a welcoming anddynamic district as Loirepart of the Region ofRhône-Alpes.My heart-felt thanks artto all the local authoritiesfor rising so magnificentlyto the Challenge of suchan event.

Without being stronglyinvolved both financiallyand in the wholeorganisational aspects ofthis event, nothingwould have beenpossible.The Region of Rhône-Alpes, the Loire district,the city of Saint-Etienne,the city of Saint-Galmierand Saint-EtienneMetropole UrbanCommunity really didhelp the Loire athleticsvolunteers in succeeding

in this initiative which isso image enhancing forour Federation.Congratulations to eachand every one of you.The Cross-Country whichis a demanding and avery educative disciplinefor young people, is oneof the oldest of Athletics. The French Federationtook this greatinternational opportunityto build up a plan forthe renewal of the CrossCountry which first

Les quelque 800 athlètes quiviendront les 19 et 20 mars2005 pour disputer lesChampionnats du Monde deCross-Country à Saint-Etienne -Saint-Galmier fouleront un soldéjà marqué du sceau de laperformance sportive.Terre de football,l'agglomération stéphanoise n'apas seulement vibré au rythmede la glorieuse épopée del'équipe de France lors de laCoupe du monde 1998, elles'est aussi inscrite dans lalégende du Tour de Francecycliste, une “grande boucle”

qu'elle devrait d'ailleurs ànouveau accueillir en juilletprochain. Elle a organisé lesChampionnats de Franced'athlétisme à Saint-Etienne en2001 et 2002, permettant aupassage à Driss Maazouzi,l'athlète international françaisqui réside à Saint-Etienne, deremporter un nouveau titrehexagonal. Elle a égalementplongé dans le grand bain desChampionnats de Francenatation en 2003.Aujourd'hui, c'est au tour dugotha de l'athlétismeinternational de découvrir le

Forez. Après Dublin en 2002,Lausanne en 2003, Bruxellesen 2004 et avant Fukuoka, auJapon, l'an prochain, laFédération Internationaled'Athlétisme (IAAF) a décidéde faire confiance à notreagglomération pour accueillircette compétition toujours trèsattendue. Des centaines debénévoles travaillent depuis desmois pour que les athlètesvenus de plus de soixante-dixnations sur les cinq continentssoient placés dans lesmeilleures conditions surl'hippodrome de Saint-Galmier

où se dérouleront les épreuvesde ces Championnats duMonde.Si je me réjouis de recevoir cessportifs de très haut niveau,c'est aussi parce qu'au-delà del'attrait sportif exercé par l'unedes plus importantescompétitions au monde, lesmédias internationaux saurontdésormais que Saint-Etienne -Saint-Galmier figure dans lacatégorie des grandesmétropoles mondiales. C'estégalement parce quel'athlétisme est le sportuniversel par excellence.

Accessibleà tous, cette pratique est

facile à mettre en œuvre pourle plus grand nombre.Excellente pour la santé, elleest aussi particulièrementpropice à la mixité sociale etculturelle. Autant de valeurshumaines chères à notre régionet déjà rappelées l'an dernierdans le cadre l'annéeeuropéenne de l'éducation parle sport.Bon séjour à tous et que notreterre forézienne soit propice àvos plus grandes performances.

The 800 athletes or so who willtake part in the IAAF WorldCross Country Championshipsin Saint-Etienne Saint-Galmieron the 19 and 20th of March2005 will set foot in an areawhich has already been markedwith sport performance.Land of soccer, the district ofSaint-Etienne did not onlyquiver for the 1998 World Cup,it also took part in the legend ofTour de France in cycling ; bythe way it may be part of itagain next July. It organised the

French Championships inathletics in Saint-Etienne in2001 and 2002, allowing atthe same time the internationalFrench athlete, Driss Maazouzi,who lives in Saint-Etienne, tobecome the new nationalchampion. It also organised the2003 National swimmingChampionships.Now it is to the elite ofinternational athletics to visitthe Forez Region. After Dublinin 2002, Lausanne in 2003,Brussels in 2004 and before

Fukuoka in Japan, next year,the IAAF World Cross CountryChampionships put itsconfidence in our district toorganise this much anticipatedcompetition. Hundreds ofvolunteers have been workingfor months in order thatathletes coming from morethan seventy countries are inthe best shape at thehippodrome of Saint-Galmierwhere all the events of the theIAAF World Cross CountryChampionships will take place.

I am really pleased to welcomeathletes of a very high levelbecause beyond the sportattraction brought by one of themost important competitions inthe world, international mediaswill know from now on thatSaint-Etienne Saint-Galmier areamong the great world cities. Iam very pleased also becauseathletics is the universal sportabove all others.This sport is open to everyoneand easy to promote. It isexcellent for health and very

Dear sporting fellows, Loire is a sport district.Saint-Galmier is a sports townand proved it many times.We do really appreciate thatthe French AthleticsFederation chose our town toorganise these IAAF WorldCross Country Championships.Our hippodrome and annexedfacilities are in accordancewith every requirement of thespecifications.Along with all the volunteerswho will all be there, we willdo everything in order that thisinternational competition is areal success.I do want to thank the city ofSaint-Etienne and MichelTHIOLLIERE, the Mayor ofSaint-Etienne, who is also my

colleague andfriend and along with whom Ialready organised veryimportant events, the successof which was the logicalconsequence of our efficientcollaboration.
