About this booklet

This booklet is about the Department of Health and Human Services disability action plan.

In this book we call it the plan.

This book is an easy read summary of the plan.

The whole plan is on the internet. On the

The plan will start in 2018 and end in 2020.

Hard words

Aboriginal

Aboriginal people are the first Australians.

Access / Accessible

Physical access means you can go inside buildings and get to places.

- For example, a person who uses a wheelchair can get into the building because there is a ramp. The building is accessible.

Access to information means you can get information in a way that is good for you.

- For example, a blind person can get information in Braille.

Actions

Actions are things we will do to help people with disability feel more included.

Auslan interpreters

A person who uses their hands, arms and body movements to change a message into Auslan.

Auslan is short for Australian sign language. Auslan is a language used by Australians who are deaf or hearing impaired.

Changing Place

Is a large bathroom with

- a toilet with side hand rails

- a high bench

- a hoist to lift the person

- a place to sit down

Communication aids

Resources to help people with speech difficulties to get their message across.

- an alphabet board

- a choice board

- a sensory book

Contribute

To give something or help to make something happen. For example help the people you work with to finish a task or job.

Disability action plan

Help organisations to be more disability friendly. For example

Emergency

Is when a bad thing happens suddenly and you need help. For example

- a flood

Employ / Employing

If you employ someone, you give them a job and pay them.

Family violence refuge

Is a place where you can stay if you have been hurt by someone you live with and you cannot stay at your home anymore.

Inclusive / included

Is when everyone can join in. Nobody is left out.

Language interpreter

A person who changes your message from one language to another.

National Disability Insurance Scheme

It is also called the NDIS. The NDIS is for people with disability to get the care and supports they need.

Promotion

When a person gets a promotion they can have more things to do in their job and get paid more money.

Refugee

Someone who needs to live in Australia because they are not safe in their own country.

Public housing

Housing for people on low pay or with particular needs. The person pays rent for the house. Public housing is provided by government agencies or non-profit organisations.

Self advocate

People with disability who stand up for their rights and have their say.

Summary

A summary means the most important parts of a bigger plan.

Supported disability accommodation

Is a type of home where people live with other people with disability and get help from support workers. This type of home is sometime called a group home or a community residential unit or CRU.

Technology

Technology includes things like computer programs.

Workplace

Any place you can work. For example an office.
