From the Editor’s Pen

On the eve of the 35th Independence and National Day

on 26 March 2016, let us all pay our deepest gratitude

and sincere homage to our valiant freedom fighters and

all freedom loving people, living and martyred, for their

sacrifices in the struggle for the liberation of the

country - Bangladesh.

On 26 March 1971 a new nation was born in the

community of world nations. It followed a bloody war of

liberation which witnessed one of the worst atrocities

by the ruling Pakistani junta which affected hundreds

and thousands of people, mostly innocent men and

women, kidnapped, killed, tortured, raped and brutalized

and their homes arsoned and torched. After nine

months of brutal struggle on 16 December 1971 the

Bengalis earned their complete freedom from the

occupation forces to fulfill their centuries old desire

for separate homeland ‘the Sonar Bangla’ – the Bengalis

dream for political, economic and social emancipation.

Now it is the call for nation building by all sections of

the people, especially the Rotarians who are instilled

with the commitment to serve the society through the

five avenues of services. Although Rotary was imbedded

in this part of the world since 1937, it flourished after

the liberation of the country with present over 300

clubs in two districts with membership over 10,000

rotarians, rotaractors and interactors to serve the

people. Through various projects and programs at club,

district and RI level the Rotary has invested in financial,

material and human resources. It has eradicated killer

diseases like Polio not only from Bangladesh but from

most of the world.

Rotary Club of Dhaka as the mother Club of Rotary in

Bangladesh has significant contribution in struggle for

the liberation of the country. Post liberation, the Club

has been continuously contributing to the uplifting of

the people’s life quality in keeping with the Rotary

theme ‘Be a gift to the society’.
