DOWNERS GROVE – A lit-tle holiday cheer arrived at theDowners Grove Goodwill storeand donation center on Christ-mas Eve when an anonymousdonor paid a visit just beforeclosing time.

According to store managerKeith Schultz, a man with hiswife and two children came tothe store and wanted to pay forcustomers’ purchases.

“He paid for five customers’purchases,” Schultz said. “One

gentleman bought a sweaterand he was almost in tearswhen he found out he didn’thave to pay for it, so it was agreat response.”

Schultz said the donorspent about $150 on customer

purchases, but the donor wasnot quite finished with hisgenerosity.

“He wanted to show hisappreciation for the work ourstaff does for the community,”Schultz said.

The donor, who wished toremain anonymous, shook thehands of all seven staff mem-bers working that night andhanded them each $50.

“Wewere all in shock,” saidWilliam Kribs, an employeeworking that night.

As a nonprofit company,staff do not accept tips as a

company policy, Schultz said,but to keep the holiday spiritof giving continuing into thenew year, a pizza party will bethrown in early January forall 42 employees with the mon-ey that was initially given tostaff, Schultz said.

“The staff know the rulesand we didn’t want to upsetthe donor,” Schultz said. “Theman’s intention was for all em-ployees to benefit, and this isthe best way for everyone toenjoy his generosity. His in-tentions are definitely beingrespected.”

DOWNERS GROVE – Theholiday season tends to bringout the best in people, bringinggoodwill in the form of mon-etary, food and clothing do-nations to organizations thathelp those less fortunate.

Local food pantries keep thegenerosity going year-roundwith help from local grocerystore donations as well as pri-vate parties.

“Sometimes, we are busierthan other times,” said RuthAnderson, coordinator of theDowners Grove Area FISHFood Pantry for the past 42years. “At the end of the year,we see more people comethrough.”

While the health of theeconomy continues to makeheadlines, Anderson said pan-try clientele numbers havebeen pretty steady this yearcompared to last year.

“We serve close to 150 fam-ilies a month,” Anderson said.

The FISH pantry maintainsits food pantry and clothescloset in the basement of theDowners Grove Townshipbuilding, 4340 Prince St. Resi-dents of Downers Grove, Lisleand Westmont have access tothe food pantry and clothescloset, while Woodridge resi-dents may come for clothingonly.

“We take their word theyneed us,” Anderson said.“They need to show proof ofID and a current utility bill toshow they live in the area.”

Dry goods such as cere-al, peanut butter and cannedfoods are always needed but soare paper products such as toi-let paper and toothpaste thatcannot be bought with foodstamps, she said. Fresh pro-duce and meat also are avail-

able for customers.Anderson said 95 percent

of individuals who come in forfood also end up taking cloth-

ing from the closet. She saidthe closet offers winter coats ofall sizes and other winter gearsuch as hats and gloves, and

adult and children’s clothing.The FISH pantry is an

all-volunteer ecumenical or-ganization that also offers“Neighborly Services” withtransportation to and fromdoctor and dental appoint-ments, as well as offering lim-ited financial assistance forutility bills, car and housingrepairs.

The FISH pantry is fundedthrough donations. Volun-teers are always welcome anddonations are accepted duringbusiness hours which are 9 to11:15 a.m. Monday and Friday.

Another pantry for thosein need is St. Mary of GostynFood Pantry, 445 Prairie Ave.,Downers Grove. The pantry issmall and only accepts Down-ers Grove residents and St.

Mary’s parishioners whomare in need. It is open from 9 to11 a.m. every Wednesday.

Run by the St. Vincent dePaul Society, a Catholic layorganization to help commu-nity members, the food pantryserves about 38 families everyweek.

The food is donated primar-ily by St. Mary’s parishioners,with some food items boughtfrom Northern Illinois FoodBank. Dry food items, freshproduce and meat are avail-able for food pantry customers.

Food donations are accept-ed during the pantry’s busi-ness hours. St. Vincent de Paulwill also help pantry custom-ers with financial assistancefor housing, and organizesclothing drives in the springand fall.

Both organizations are runby volunteers, but the commu-nity at large is responsible fora majority of the items that fillthe shelves and clothing racksat both pantries.

“Every school in Downersdonated to us this year whichwas great,” Anderson said.

Downers Grove Park Districtproperties hit by two vandals

DOWNERS GROVE – Theday after Christmas was a de-structive day for the DownersGrove Park District.

Betweenmidnight and8a.m.Dec. 26, 2014, someonedamagedthe turf owned by the Down-ers Grove Park District on thenortheast corner of Walnut andBurlington avenues, officialssaid. The damage indicated thatan unknown driver and motorvehicle drove through the prop-erty in circles at maximum ac-celeration, police said.

A second incident was re-ported at 8:34 p.m. Dec. 26,when a resident called to re-port the remains of a ParkDistrict sign laying on hisdoorstep in the 6200 block ofBrookbank Road, police said.

The painted and sandblast-

ed wooden sign was located atthe Park District property inthe 6200 block of BrookbankRoad, according to officials.

Additionally,policereceivedan anonymous call regardingseveral youths damaging signsin the 1100 block of 61st Streetabout 10 minutes prior to thisincident, police said.

Damage is estimated to be$800 for both incidents, accord-ing to officials.

Coalition submits petitionfor advisory referendum

DOWNERS GROVE – TheDowners Grove for Responsi-ble Government coalition isone step closer to placing anadvisory question on the April7 ballot to gauge resident opin-ion on the village’s proposedfacilities plan project.

Co-chairmen of the coa-lition, Tim Werner and TimHarms, submitted petitionswithmore than3,000signaturesMonday to Downers Grove Vil-lage Clerk April Holden.

Thepetitionwasinsupportofa referendum asking residentsif they supported spending $46million ormore on the proposednewDownersGrovevillagehall,police station and fire station.

Eight percent of voters whovoted in the last gubernatorialgeneral election were neededto sign the petition – equaling1,551 signatures – to place thereferendum question on theApril 7 ballot.

According to Holden, therewere 228 pages of signaturessubmitted by the coalition.

The public has five days tofile any objection to the peti-tion, Holden said. If there areno objections, she will certifythe question to the DuPage

County Election Commissionon Jan. 12, who will place thequestion on the ballot.

“Despite having only a fewweeks to obtain signatures, weare thrilled to be able to sub-mit nearly double the requirednumber, collected by morethan 50 volunteers,” DG4RGCo-Chairman Tim Wernersaid in a statement. “The out-pouring of support from acrossthe Downers Grove communi-ty clearly shows that residentswant to express their voiceon the proposed new villagebuildings at the ballot box.”

The village has been study-ing the facilities issue since 2007and maintains the existing vil-lage hall, police station and fleetmaintenance facility, all locateddowntown at the Civic Centersite, are outdatedor inadequate.Two Town Hall meetings werehosted in December to provideinformation to residents on theproposed facilities project.

And, for the first time, if aboater along the Cal-Sag Chan-nel or Fox River operates un-der the influence, the boat canbe impounded.

Likewise, if underage kidsare caught drinking insidecars, motor homes, campersand private planes, their par-ents now can be charged witha crime.

As Illinois residents begina new year, they face 220 newlaws that took effect Jan. 1, ap-proved by lawmakers and Gov.Pat Quinn. The highlights cov-er various issues, from trans-portation to wild animals.

TransportationAfter lawmakers raised the

speed limit to 70 mph on down-state interstates in 2014, theydecided to do the same in 2015for Chicago-area interstates

under the Illinois Tollway Au-thority’s control.

However, it could be awhile before 70 mph speed lim-it signs start popping up alongInterstate 88, 294 or 355. Thetollway authority still needsto conduct traffic studies todetermine if a speed limit in-crease is warranted. Then itwould require approval fromthe tollway’s board of direc-tors, the Illinois Departmentof Transportation and theJoint Commission on Admin-istrative Rules before takingeffect.

Another bill now prohibitspolice from taking a person’sdriver’s license as bond af-ter pulling them over for mi-nor traffic violations such asspeeding.

Illinois was one of six statesthat allowed police to confis-cate licenses for minor trafficviolations, according to Illi-nois Senate Republicans.

D-Deerfield, requires boaterstowing a person to displayan orange flag. The bill wasinspired by Morrison’s neph-ew, Tony Borcia, a 10-year-oldfrom Libertyville who died af-ter a crash along the Chain O’Lakes in 2012.

Borcia fell off an inner tubebeing pulled by a boat on Pe-tite Lake and died after beingstruck by another boat. Theflag is meant to alert nearbyboaters that a person is beingtowed.

Another law sponsored byMorrison allows police to seizethe crafts of intoxicated boat-ers in certain cases.

Children and healthKids younger than 18 who

suffer from seizures now canqualify for the state’s medicalmarijuana pilot program witha parent’s consent.

Another law requires re-tailers to sell e-cigarettes ei-ther behind the counter, in anage-restricted area or a sealeddisplay case.

Lawmakers also expanded

schools’ jurisdiction with cy-berbullying in 2015. Schoolscan discipline students whobully others through personalphones and computers, alongwith school-owned devices.

Another measure allowsparents to be charged with acrime if their child is caughtdrinking alcohol inside cars,private planes, motor homes,campers and boats.

It expands an existing lawthat made it illegal for parentsto allow underage drinking attheir home. The new law ex-tends the prohibition to prop-erty owned by parents outside

of their homes.

Animal protectionBlack bears, cougars and

gray wolves are now protectedspecies in Illinois.

Although still rare, the wildanimals in recent years havebeen spotted around the state,including a black bear seenlast summer in a field betweenMarengo and Belvidere, nearInterstate 90.

The new designation al-lows conservation officials tobetter protect the animals, asthey make appearances in Il-linois.

Downers Grove resident loses $6,500 in scamSUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

DOWNERS GROVE – ADowners Grove woman wasthe victim of phone scam Dec.28 that netted the fraudsters$6,500.

Thewoman,originally fromPoland and who speaks verylittle English, was contacted bya woman pretending to be herdaughter-in-law, stating thevictim’s son had been arrest-ed for striking a person with

his vehicle and taken to jail inCook County, police said.

The female impersonatorspoke Polish and said $6,500in bond money was needed torelease him from jail, officialssaid. The impersonator told thewoman to give the money to anattorney who would wait out-side her residence, police said.

The woman borrowedthe money from friends andput it in an envelope, policesaid. She met a man outside

her residence wearing a grayskull hat who spoke “perfectlygood Polish,” accepted the en-velope of money and walkedaway from her, officials said.

The woman was informedabout the “grandparent scam”that involves criminals prey-ing on elderly to steal money,officials said.

DOWNERS GROVE – Gig-gling vandals were seen tryingto remove a street sign at Cur-tiss Street and Glenview Ave-nue in the early hours of Dec.27, 2014, according to DownersGrove police.

Police were called to thescene about 2 a.m. Dec. 27, whena resident smoking a cigarette

outside heard giggling, officialssaid. Two male juveniles wear-ing hoodies, one gray and oneblack, were seen wiggling a signback and forth in an apparentattempt to remove it, policesaid.

The pair ran off at onepoint but then returned to fin-ish their work a minute lat-er before fleeing on foot afterpulling out the street sign, ac-

cording to police.The post and signs were

not damaged, but the basethat had been cemented in hadbeen torn out and will need tobe replaced, officials said.

Damage is estimated to be$100, according to police.

Four Downers Grove third-graders won a ride to school in De-

cember thanks to winning the Home Escape Fire Safety contest

sponsored by the Downers Grove Fire Department. After review-

ing all plans and selecting those showing the best emergency fire

escape routes from their homes, third-graders Hayden Worth,

Ksenia Baatz, Lilliana Jaeger and Gabriella Okuku were each

driven to school on the Downers Grove Fire Department fire

truck. More than 400 Downers Grove students submitted entries

to the contest.

After a very successful debut last year, Pizza Wars is returning

to District 99. The local school district will raise funds for learner

grants for the enrichment of District 99 curriculum at the event,

at which seven local pizzerias will offer samples of their pizza

slices for an entry fee. The event is scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m.

One of the things I love about this time of year is the extra gen-erosity of heart that seems to overflow from the people aroundme – be it an extra pair of hands to help load up a car to bringtoys to a domestic violence shelter or someone letting you intotraffic during a busy commute on Ogden Avenue. Everywhere Ilook, it feels like everyone is inthemood to go that extramile.This excites me because at thetownship I think one of themost important roles we playis working with community tomake our world a better place.

On Dec. 8, 2014, we were able to thank some of those com-munity members who selflessly give of their time, energy andother resources to make Downers Grove Township what it is:a great place to work and live. There are so many individualsand organizations we collaborate with that it is always difficultto choose who we want to acknowledge.

Reflecting on 2014, two major programs stood out as worthyof the extra special recognition at our annual luncheon.

Our Senior Advisory Council and SALT. (Seniors and LawmenTogether) committee worked tirelessly to launch its first CarCare Clinic for seniors.Whilemanywere involved in organizingthis highly successful event Sept. 20, there were threewho reallydemonstrated their commitment to communitywith their efforts.Cpl. Mike Urso of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department, LynnDralle of theWestmont Fire Department andAlice Krampits oftheWestmont ParkDistrict Senior Centerwere humble as they ac-cepted a small token of our thanks for the level of dedication theycontributed to this program and somany others in our township.

Another group of individualswho continue to inspiremewiththeir insight, compassion and goodhearts are those high school stu-dentswho serve in the township’s peer jury program. Just celebrat-ing the completion of its 14th year, the programwould not have theimpact it doeswithout their dedication. This year, we highlightedthree who all started as freshman and now, as seniors, will leavebehind big shoes to fill. Surrounded by proud parents and grand-parents, wewere able to thankBobKeding andRucha Patel fromDowners Grove SouthHigh School andDamianMargarites fromDowners GroveNorthHigh School. Their outstanding demonstra-tion of character has been a constant source of inspiration tome.

The township always has tried to collaborate with the com-munities within our borders to make them places we can all beexcited and proud to be a part of, and we want our partners inthese endeavors to know how much we appreciate and valueeach and every one of them.

about spending $52 milliondollars on a new village complexto include the village hall, policedepartment and fleet mainte-nance. If residents do not feelit is appropriate to spend thisamount of money, why doesn’tDowners Grove consider usingan existing building that wouldonly need interior work? Usingan existing building should cutdown dramatically on the finalcost. There is an unoccupiedDominick’s store on 63rd Street,which should have ample spaceto meet the needs of DownersGrove. There is also ample park-ing. If that amount of parkingis not needed, then perhaps afleet building could be built inthe parking lot area. DownersGrove could sell the existingvillage hall and use the proceedstoward the new facility. Some-times thinking outside the box isthe best option.

No more fireworks atmidnight New Year’s DayThis is in regards to New Year’s

[Eve and Day] celebrations. Iwould like to address all thesepeople who feel the need tobring their neighbors into theircelebrations by letting off fire-works at midnight. It’s very dis-turbing. colleges are noting their veryminimal tuition hikes this year,they have a history of disregard-ing the inflation rate in manyyears by large percents. Yet,students are burdened withloans that will last a lifetime,and at the same time, find ithard to find decent-paying jobs.Why not “get even” by spendingthe first two years at a highquality community college likethe College of DuPage? Then,transfer as a junior, whichbecomes quite easy for mostfour-year colleges. You’ll end upwith as good an education, less

student loans and probably saveat least $50,000 to $200,000 inthe process.

lowering our property taxesa little this year, but they areraising our water and rubbishrates. Talk about giving withone hand and taking away withthe other!

DOWNERS GROVE – Thehum of sewing machinesdoesn’t mask the laughter of agroup of sewers as they workin concert to create colorfulpillowcases for cancer pa-tients.

Founded in Pennsylvaniain 2002 by Cindy Kerr whomade pillowcases for her hos-pitalized son, ConKerr Canceris now in 120 cities nationwide,Downers Grove included.

Friendly Stitches Sew &Vac on 63rd Street has beenhosting ConKerr Canceron the third Tuesday of themonth for more than a year,according to Ellyn Nicodem,co-owner of the sewing shop.Her business partner is pastorJon Hoekema.

“I love it,” Nicodem said.“It’s a lot of what we are. Weare both Christians and felt itwas important to do a little ofGod’s work. We take care ofthe needs of sewers and quil-

ters and we wanted to giveback to the community.”

Nicodem doesn’t charge thegroup, and offers a room with

table space for sewers to bringin their machines and get towork stitching the pillowcasesthat will be taken to Ann and

Robert H. Lurie Children’sHospital of Chicago, Universi-ty of Chicago Medicine Com-er Children’s Hospital, RushChildren’s Hospital and Uni-versity of Illinois ChicagoChildren’s Hospital.

ConKerr Cancer volunteercoordinator Vicki Lee travels

to different locations in theChicago region and deliversbetween 200 to 250 pillowcasesper month between the hospi-tals.

“You get so much out ofthis,” Lee said. “It’s easy to doand makes you feel so good be-cause you know [a pillowcase]is going tomake a child smile.”

ConKerr Cancer providesthe fabric and Lee spendsmany an evening in front ofthe television cutting fabricto the proper lengths. Shewill take the bundles of fabricprinted with cartoon charac-ters, seasonal images and ani-mals to the sewing clinics thatwill then get folded and pinnedby volunteers before they aresewn into a standard pillow-case.

Jan Haine, 77, of Aurora,deftly ran the fabric beneaththe sewing needle as she spokeabout her 10 years of volunteerwork with ConKerr Cancer.

“It’s going to a useful placeand it’s one thing I can do withmy talent to pay back to soci-ety for a good cause,” she said.

ROMEOVILLE – A lategame-winning shot from four-year Downers Grove Northcenter David Edwards helpedthe Trojans clinch the Romeo-ville Christmas Classic onDec. 30, 2014.

Edwards, whomade his sea-son debut in the tournamentopener after missing the firstmonth of the season while re-habbing an injury, converted atie-breaking layup with threesecond left in the champion-ship game against Oak Forest,sealing a 51-49 DGN victory.

“The stat sheet doesn’t reflectthe presence he has in the lowpost and the confidence he giveshis teammates,” DownersGroveNorth head coach Jim Thomassaid of the 6-foot-7 senior whofinishedwith five points.

With the game knotted at49 and less than 30 secondsleft in the fourth quarter, Tro-jans guard Jordon Kedrowskicharged into the offensive zonewherehewasmetbyaswarmofOak Forest defenders. Insteadof swinging the ball around theperimeter, Kedrowski knifedthrough defense and into thekey, feeding a wide open Ed-wards, who then sunk an un-contested layup.

“You have your all-tourna-ment guys and your MVP, butthat play doesn’t develop with-outJordan[Kedrowski],”Thom-as said. “I thought he showed a

lot of maturity in crunch timeand made an unbelievable playto breakdown their defense andget Edwards the ball.”

Kedrowski also was a cata-lyst in the first half, manninga Trojans offense that hit four3-pointers and outscored OakForest 21-10 in the openingquarter. Tournament MVPDevin Blake had the hot handearly, scoring 14 of his team-high 15 points in the first halfas North led 33-24 at halftime.

Blake: No, this is my firstone; it’s a really great honor.
