Univ,ersal Qeligion SHRII SHRII A'NANDAMUGRTI

(This i a comprehensive lecture given by BA'BA' (excerpted from A Pnnda

,Ma Prqa Elementary Phi lO!LC?.EJ:!Ji)., in 'Vhich HE discusses some

of &he fundamental aspects of A'nanda Ma'rga philosophy, such as the Dharma of the Human Being. the parts of the mind and how the mind perceives and the relationship between unit consciousness and cosmic consciousness.)

Man is the highest evolved being. He possesses clearly reflected consciousness and that makes him superior to animals. No other being has such a clear reflection of his consciousness. He can distinguish between good and bad wicn the help of his consciousness and when in trouble, he can with i ts help also find a way out. No one likes to live in misery and suffering, far less man, whose consciousness can find out means of relief. Life without sorrow and suffering is life of haopiness and bliss, and that is what man desires. Everyone is in quest for napplnes:s; in fact it is man's nature to seek happiness. Now let us see what one does to achieve it and whether it is achieved by those means.

In his search for happiness man is first attracted by ear tn l y enjoyments. He collects wealth, tries to achieve power and position to satisfy his desi re for happiness. One who has a hundred is not satisfied with it. He strives for thousands but even possessing thousands does not satisfy him. He wants a million and so on. Then it is seen that a person havig influence in a district wants to extend it over the province. Provincial leaders want to become national leaders and when they have achieved (hat, there creeps in the desire for world leadership. Mere acqu isi tion of wealth, power and position does not satisfy. The acquisition of someth i ng limited only creates the want for acquiring more and man's quest for happiness finds no end. The hunger for possessing more is unending. It is limitless and infin ite .

However dignified or lofty the achievement, it fails to set at rest man's unlimited quest for happiness. Those who hanker after wealth will not be satisfied till they can obtain unlimited wealth. Nor will the seeker of power, POSitlOli and prestige be satisfied till they can get these in l i m i tless proportions, as all these are earthly objects of the world. World itself is finite and cannot provide things infinite. 'NatOrally. therefore, the greatest worldly acquirement, even if it be the entire globe, would not secure anything of an infinite and permanent character. What then is that infinite, eternal thing which will provide everlasting h2pDi0es?

Cosmic Entity alone is infinite and eternal. It alone is l i mitles s . And the eternal longing of human being for happiness can only be satiated by realization of the infinite. The ephemeral nature of worldly possessions. power and posltlon leads one to the only conclusion that none of the things of this finite 3nd limited world can set at rest the everlasting urge for happiness. Their acquisition merely gives rise to further longing. Only realization of the infinite can do it. The infinite can be only One and that is Brahma--the Cosmic Entity. Hence i t is only Brahma that can provide everlasting happiness--the quest for which is the characteristic of every human being. In reality behind this human urge is hidden the

.ds'ire,

.the

longing for attainment of Brahma. It is the very nature of every llVHlg belng. This alone is the Dharma of every man. .

The word Dharma signliies property. The English word for it is nature, characteristic or property. The nature of fire is to burn or produce heat. It is the characteristic or property of fire and is also te,,,:ed uS nature of fire

DFTS-03572

Similarly the Dharma or nature of human being is to seek Brahma--the Supreme Blessedness.

The standard of animality in man is characterised by a clearly reflected consciousness. Every human bei having evolved from animals has, therefore, two aspects viz. the animal aspect and the conscious aspet which

,dist ngu shes h m from

animals. Animals display predominantly only one qual1ty--the1r an1mal1ty, whl1e human beings due to a well-reflected consciusness also pssess ,rationalit. The animality in human beings gives them a lean1ng towards an1mal llfe r phys:ca enjoyment of earthly joys, They, under its influence crave for eat1ng, dr1nklng and gratification of other physical desires. They are attracted towards thee and crave for them under the i nfl uence of thei r animality, but these do not prov1 de happiness as their longing for it is inffite. Animls are satisfied ith thes limited enjoyments as their urge is not infinite. Howeer arge quant1ty of th1ngs may be offered to an animal it would only take thos Wh1Ch lt eeds and wou d

.not

bother for the rest. But man would certainly act d1fferently 1n these condltlOns. This only establishes that animals ae itified with te limitd while

,the d esire

of human being is limitless; although the desire fo: enJoymen 1n both 1 prompted and governed by their animal aspect of life. The d1fference 1n the two 1S due to the possession of a clearly reflecte,d consciousness in the human eing,

,which the ,

animals lack. The infinite nature of human urge for absolute hapP1ness 1S due to h1S

consciousness alone. "It is his consciousness only which is not satisfied with

earthly joys of possession, power and posi\ion--th ngs ,which ispite of teir huge

proportions are only transitory in character. It 1S h1S conSC10usness WhlCh creates

in him the long4ng for Brahma--the Eternal Blessedness. The things of the world--the earthly enjoyment do not quench the thirst of the

hman heart for happiness. Yet we find that he is attracted by them. The animality in man draws him towards gratification of animal desires but the rationality of his consciousness remains ungratified since all these are transitory and shortlived. These are not enouah to spt at rest the une:'1ding and unlimited hunger of the human consciousness. There is, thu?, a constant duel in man between his animality and his rationality. The animdl aspect pulls him towards instant earthly joys while the consciousness, not beinq satisfied with these draws him towards Brahma--the Infinite. This results in' the :;truggle beb'Jeen the animal aspect and consciJusness. Had the carnal pleasure'; lerived from pow::' ,lnd position been infinite and fndless, they would have set at re';t the eternal qU2St of the consciousness for happiness. And that is ;vhy the fleeting glory of tempordl joys can never secure a lasting peac in human mind and lead him to ecstasy.

It is only the 'dell-reflected consciousness which differentiates man to make use of his co,:;ciousness. If his consciousness lies dormant behind his animality he is bound to behav2 like animals. He, in fact, will be worse than an animal for even though endowed with consciousness, he does not make use of it. Such a person does not deserve the status of a human being. He is an animal--a beast in human guise.

The nature of consciousness is·to seek for the Infinite or Brahma. Only those who make use of their consciousness and follow its dictates deserve to be called human beings. Therefore, every person who by making full use of his clearly reflected consciousness entitles himself to be called a human being, finds his Dharma or Nature' to be only the search for the Infini te or Brahma. This longing for the Infinite or Brahma is the innate quality or Dharma which characterizes the human status of m.an. •

Happiness is deri ved by getting what one desires. If one does not get what he desires he cannot be happy. He is sad and miserable. The clearly reflected consciousness in man which alone distinguishes him from animals, seeks Brahma or the Infinite. And so man derives real happiness only when he can obtain Brahma or ets into the process of obtainino It. The consciousness does not want earthly JOYS because being finite none of them can satisfy it. The conclusion thus we arrive

DFTS-03573

at is that the Universal Religion or Dharma of man is to realize the Infinite or Brahma. It is only by means of this Dharma that he can enjoy eternal hapPlness and bliss. .

The characteristic of man 'or his Dharma is to attain B'rahma. It is, therefore. necessary to see whether Brahma exists at all or not. It would otherwi-se be futile to attempt to get something which does not actually exist. If Brahma exists, we must know what it is.

Every action a person performs 9 appears to have been executed by his physical organs, the Indriyas. These organs or Indriyas are ten in number and almost every act; on of a person appears to have been performed because of these ten Indriyas. Yet actually it is not so. If'the mind does not work behind these, the Indriyas by themselves cannot perform any action. It is the mind which works and the ten Indriyas are merely the instruments through which the work is executed. The action which originates in mind. only finds its external manifestation with the help of the Indriyas. To expain we can take the example of a person seeing a book. It is the mind only which visualizes the book with the help of the instruments of the eyes. If the mind does not work the eyes will not be able to see the book. For instance, a person in a senseless state either with the help of anaesthesia or otherwise, will not be able to see the book even if his eyes were wide open. In such a state of senselessness the eyes are not damaged yet they cannot perform their natural function due to the contact with mind being suspended. That is why under the influence of anaesthesia, the organs or Indriyas do not function, although they remain in perfect order. How often, when absorbed in some thought, we miss to notice a person or recognize a friend standing right in front of us. This is only because. inspite of eyes being in perfect order and wide open, the mind, which actually performs all actions. does not make use of this Indriya--the eyes. It is the mind which works and the Indriyas only help in its manifestation externally.

If it is mind only which wop.ks, let us know how it acts with the help of these Indriyas. For instance, seeing a book is an action which mind performs with the help of eyes, When mind sees a book, what actually happens is that mind with the help of eyes takes up the shape of something we call a book. This shape, h icn the mind becomes, is different from the, image which is said to be formed on the retina, as mind can see and become like a book even when the eyes are closee; while the eyes cannot see when the mind does not function. So it is mind which becomes like the form of a book. while the action of seeing the book is being performed. This portion of mind which becomes like the form of a book, is termed as Citta (mind's stuff). As soon as Citta takes the form of a book, it (the book) will have to be seen. There must then, be something different from Citta which does the work of seeing. The part of mind (ego) which does the work of seeing is called Aham'tattva. But 'I' will not be able to see anything unless 'I' exists. So there must be a part of mind different from these two which respectively takes the shape and performs the action of seeing- This third Dart of mind is the part which gives the feeling of 'I' and is called Mahattattva. Without the feeling of existence of 'I' or knowledge of self, no action can be performed. This feeling of 'I' or knowledge of self is given by Mahattattva or Buddhitattva. The collective name for these three is mind or 'Antahkaran'ah (introversal psychic force). But these three portions of mind are only manifestations of mY mind. It is with this mind that the action of seeing a book is performed and termed as psychic assimilation of Ru'pa Tanma'tra.

Tanma'tra is a new term introduced, hence it should also be explained, The subtle form in which the Indriyas grasp a crude form is called Tanma'tra. To explain it further it can be said that the idea of a book is grasped with the help of Ru'pa Tanrna'tra (the ideatory :,vibration of nerve creating image or figure) when one sees the book with the help of the mechanism of the eyes. But if the eyes be closed or if one ;s in a dark place, one can still recognize a book by touch.

visibility or out of reach of touch, it would be posslble to ldentlfy lt as a book by grasping"The idea with th"e Fielp of auditory Tanma'tra. Citta comes in contact with TanmaLtra only when Ahamtattva wants it to do so. The action of seeing or i dent; fying the book has to be done by Ahaml tattva as Ci tta by itsel f does not possess the capacity of performing any function. When Aham'tattva or the part of mind which works wants to see a book. Citta comes in contact with the organs of sight i.e. eyes. Eyes receive Ru1pa Ta nmaltra of the book. This Tanma'tra which is always present in the environment in the form of waves. strikes against Citta through eyes which form a sort of door for Citta to come in contact with the outside world. Citta with this impact assumes the shape of the book and Aham'tattva then identifies or sees the book the shape of which Citta has assu med. Similarly when Aham'tattva wants to hear some words it sends Citta ou twards to come in contact with the organs of hearing--the ears. Ears receive the sound Tanmaltra. which is always present in the physical environment through the medium of soundwaves. Citta, with the impact of this Tanmaltra on it becomes the sound itself and Aham'tattva hears that sound only, This shows that whatever Ahamltattva desires or does. Citta takes that form. Saying it conversely, Citta manifests all the actions which Aham'tattva performs.

It has al ready been explained that Citta. Aham'tattva and Mahattattva or Buddhitattva constitu te the mind. Citta has only the capacity of taking the form of what Ahamltattva wants it to become. Similafly Ahamltattva has only the capacity of action. It can only work.

There must be something to make it work. That something is Mahattattva or Buddhitattva which gives one the feeling of 'I '. This feeling of 'I' is derived from my mind and thisll' in my mind makes Aham'tattva and Citta perfonn their respective functions. Without this III it would not be possible to feel or realize the form of the book even if, under the functioning influence o f Ahamltattva, Citta becomes like a book. But then this'l' also is only a part of 11lY mind. That is, there is another ' I' which is the possessing II'. or the III which knows that there is a mind. The exi stence of I I I in my mind on ly proves that there is another real Master which is beyond mind and which knows about the existance of mind. This I I' which is the witnessing entity, witnesses the existence of mind and therein the existence of Mahattattva or the feeling of 'I ' is called A'tman or unit consc H}Usness. Thus by introspect; on and concentrated thinking it is observed that Altman and mind, i.e.unit consciousness and mind, are two separate entities.

Altman or unit consciousness and mind are two separate forms; yet theyl1lUst be related to each o ther. In the first instance it appears that I know of 11lY existe nce. Then the same I I! that appears to prove my e xistence makes, me work and a part of my mind called Citta takes the form of the book through Tanma'tra to enable me to see the book. The 'I' that gives me the consciousness or the 'I' which witnesses the existence of my mind and therein of the II' which gives the feelin 'I exist' is A'tman or unit consciousness, The 'II that gives the feeling of I I ex'ist' and also proves the existence of Altman or unit consciousness, "is the Mahattattva. Th'e 'I' that works or sees the book in Aham'tattva and the portion of mind that takes the shape of the book and enables mY Aham'tattva to see it is Citta. Th'is shows that the same I I I takes different functional forms in all these stages. How these different funct i ana 1 forms of the same ! I! come' about needs further clarif'ication. The statement 'I exist' presupposes the presence of 'I' wh'lell is vritness of th"is existence. This witnessing entity is Altman or unit consciousness and its presence is established by the feeling of existence that one displays in every action. That th'is assertion of 'I exist's is different from Altman or unit consciousness. is seen from the fact that this 'I' claims the presence of mY Altman or unit consciousness. This feeling proves that unit consciousness is only consc'iousness and that without consciousness existence is not possible, If

there is no consciousness the feeling of existen ce cannot be there. What is then going to witness the existence of i I '1 Consciousness is therefore essenti al for giving rise to the feeling of Mahattattva, To be explicit, Mahattattva or Buddhitattva cannot exist without Altman or unit consciousness. @

But the wi tnessing e ntity and the pure feel ing of I r' appear to be the functi anal forms of one I I I only. In fact the same I I I that witnesses IT\Y existence manifests itse lf as the other II I of 'I exist '. The VJit nessing 'I' is unit consc; ousness or A I tman and it mani fests i tsel f as Mahattattva or Buddhitattva and thus establishes its own existence. It is the witnessing entity or unit consciousness which on taking up the functional form of the III of II exist·. is called Mahattattva or Buddhitattva. Thus unit consciousness is not consciousness only but has a quality also w ith the help of which it manifests itself into diffe rent fun ctional forms. This quality is not consciousness , as otherwise it will not be necessary for unit consciousness to take up a f unctional form to maniflest as Mahattattva and acquire the II' of II existl which is different f ro m the witnessing entity, Consc iousness and its quality are therefore two separate e ntities in Ntman or unit consciousness. T he quality being different from consciousness must have been obtained from somewhere. There should be some other factor to qualify Altman to manifest itself as Mahattattva. That which gives this quality to A'tman is call e d Prakrti. In other words it is due to Pr akrti quali fying Altman that it is manifested as . Mahattatt va and gets the feeling of III.

What is Prakrti needs exp lanati on. Prakrti means that which controls natural phenomenon. Prakrti is not nature or quality . For inst ance the qu ality of burning is said to be the nature of fire. There must be something which give fire this q uality ; just as there is some entity which imparts qu ality to unit consciousness

, (Prakrti) which is different from the qualtty which is eXli'ibited due to Prakrtils influence. Prakrti is a Samlskrit word which is derived from IPra'-'Krl-' Ktinl, and it means to do in a special way. Unit consciousness establishes its existence onJy on being quaHfied by Prakrti . In other words Prakrti qualifies unit consciousness or Altn to g ive it the realization of its existence. Energy is required to perform any action. Prakrti, as it pe rforms the action of qualifying A' tman or unit consciousness is a unique force. She is a principle which qualifies unit consciousness. It is Prakrti which. by her influence on unit consciousness, gives it the qual ities of different f unctional forms. Prakrti is a unique force-a principlp.; but whose pri nciple it is and where it comes f rom is a question which comes up_ Prakrti is the principle of unit consciousness only and it is by its own principle that it is bein0 in fluenced and qualified . Prak rti being the princ i ple o f unit consciousness must exist within it. In fact it al ways does. Unit consciousness and its Prakrti can never be separated from each other like the burning principle of fire which cannot be s eparated from fire. Anything, which acquires or gets a characteristic quality due to the influence. of a principle or force, cannot exist if that principle or force .is withdrawn from it. The two will always be together and so would be un it consciousness and its p rinciple , Prakrti. Unit consciousness and its Prakrti are inseparable like the two sides of a sheet of paper. The only f unction of Prakrti is to keep on giving different functional fo rms by it's influence over consciousness,

- .

Unit consciousness is the witnessing entity and realises its existence only when it is qualified to manifest as III of 'I exist ' . The prin cipl e of Prakrti which establishes the existence of un it consciousness b y qualifying it is called Sattvagun1a, the sentient principle, and the part of mind which is thus formed to give the feeling of II existl is called Mahattattv a or Buddhitattva. It will be more correct to say that u nder the influence of Sattvagunla. unit consciousness manifests itself as Mahattattva or Buddhitattva.

Every action presupposes existence. Unless 'I existl, I will not be able to see. Here also we find 'II having two different functional forms or counterparts.

The fi rst is the witnessing entity or consc; ousness whi eh in order to prove or realize its existence has acquired the feeling of 'I exist! and the same 'I! now performs the fun·ction of seeing. The 'II of 'I exist' is lIlY Buddhitattva \'Jhich \lhi1e seeing takes up the new function of seeing in addition to establishinq the ,. existence of unit consciousness. Unit consciousness on being influenced by Prakrtl manifests as Mahattattva. Similarly the addit ional quality of performing an action is also endowed by the influence of Prakrti on tllahattattva. Prakrti will be present in Mahattattva 1:1150 as it is only a manifestation of unit consciousness wherever, and in whatever form it may exist. The principle or Gunia of Prakrti which gives this quality or capacity to Mahattattva is called Rajogunla--the mutative p rinciple Thus rahattattva on being infl uenced by Prakrti displays two f unction al forms or counterparts. The latter which it gets from Ra jogun1a and which giws it the capacity or quality of performing an action is called Aham'tattva. That is Mahattattva ma ni fests itself as Aham'tattva when influenced by Rajogun'a or the mutati ve principle of Prakrti.

Every act; on is bound to have a result in the end. For example, whil e seeing a book the resul t of the acti on of seeing a book is s the book whi ch is seen. How I see a book has already been explained earlier. Citta, which is a part of mind, grasps the form producing Tanma'tra of the book and itself becomes the form of the book. It is that book that Ahaml tattva sees., Citta t akes up t he fo rm or becomes like the one that Aham'tattva wants it to be. When Aham'tattva sees a book, Citta becomes a book and when it hears a sound it becomes that sound. Citta therefore is that stuff, the form of which is entirely dependent on Aham'tattva. Citta keeps on changing its form at the bidding of Ahamltattva. It must then be very closely connected w i t h Aham'tattva. How this stuff is formed nee ds clarifi= cation. CHta, as has been explained earlier. is a part of mind and Mahattattva and Aham'tattva are the o ther two parts. Mahattattva and Aham' tattva are manifestati ons of unit consciousne ss formed by the influence of Sattvagun I a or Prakrti over it and of Rajogun'a over Mahattattva. In other words it is unit consciousness only, whi ell under the infl uence of Prakrti takes up the functi onal form of Aham'-tattva also in the secondary stage. Hence Prakrti would be present in Aham'tat:;d and is bound to qualify it further. In fact, it is due to the Prakrti qualifying Aham'tattva that it manifests itsel f as Citta. This quality of Prakrti i'/hich influences Aham1tattva is called Tamogun'a--the static principle. It is as a resul t of the infl uence of Tarnogun I a that Aham'tattva, or the I I' that wo rks , has to t ake up the ideative form of the result of its action. This means that when III see a book it is 'II that becomes like the book. Another I I ' thus cons into being under the influence of Tamogun' a. It is this I I' which takes the ideative form of the book while a book is being seen. This III which becomes like the book or takes the form of the book is Citta. Thus it is unit ,consciousness only which gradually manifest itse lf as Citta al so.

In the preceding paragraphs it has been established with the help of logic and Y'easonin g that it is unit consciousness only which on being influenced by different principles of i ts Prakrti gradually manifests itself into CHta and as Ii result of this mind comes into- being . The existence f unit consciousness is . essent-lal for mind wh'fch is. only a grad ua l manifestation of unit consci ousness under the qual'Lfying influence of Prakrti. Mind, in fact , cannot be formed without the presence of Altman or unit consciou snes s. But we know that mind is present in every ind'ividuaL Hen ce Altman or unit consciousness is al so pl"eSenC .;''('y individual. Then are in numerable individuals in this universe and as A l tma n or unit consci Dusness is refl eeted in everyone, the re appears t'o 'be many A I tman or unH consciousness. The collective name for all these Altman or units of consciousness is Parama1tman, Bhuima'caetanya, Brahma& or Bhagava'na. Just as b.lelve units make a dozen and twenty make i score.the collect; ve name for a very large number of soldiers is arlllY; the collective name for all the refl,=c:tons;s Parama1tman, Bhu'ma'caetanya or Bhagava'na. The neal"est \fIord in EngHsh which may be used for Altman or unit consciousness is soul; hence Paramaitman rnay also be named as universal soul. This shows that Paramaltmn does exist and that It exists as universal sou l or cosmic consciousness or Brahma--the Eternal Blessedness.
