Purpose To provide researchers with the opportunity to work jointly on a particular research task in order to achieve results that go beyond what can be achieved through individual research

Size In Germany typically up to 9 sub-projects and approx. 15 PIs, Budget between 1.5 and 3 Mio. € per 3 years

Eligibility Researchers from all disciplines at German research institutions who have completed their scientific training

Duration Usually six/eight years (2 x 3/4 years)

Purpose To create a core research focus at a university through the long-term promotion of interdisciplinary cooperation within the framework of a coordinated programme

Size In Germany typically between 15 and 25 sub-projects and approx. 20 to 30 PIs, Budget between 4 and 12 Mio. € per 4 years

Eligibility Research Universities

Duration Up to 12 years, with each funding period encompassing four years

Characteristics 2-step process: pre-proposal (small review panel meeting at DFG) and full proposal (big review panel meeting at university)

Duration 4.5 years per funding period, maximum of nine years
