Fluxus in Nam June Paik Art Center

Three weeks ago, on the 8th October 2008 the Nam June Paik Art Center was open for public in Korea, not far away from Seoul. The center was built in April 2008. But the first exhibition has just began. The artist Nam June Paik (1932 – 2006) which is called the video art’s grandfather didn’t see the building because of his death. The idea to create the museum as an exhibition and research space for video and media art emerged seven years ago, when the artist was alive.It was unexpected that the first event in the center was an exhibition on art not by Nam June Paik himself, but works by several other artist working with these kind of arts. In March 2003 the international architectural com-petition took place in a very big way. 940 applica-tions from 53 countries came to the organizers. Finally, in August 2003 the jury headed by Odile Decq had to chose from 439 projects. The winner

was the German female architect Kirsten Schemel who has her own bureau Kirsten Schemel Archi-tekten and is a professor in Münster University of Applied Sciences. The young architect Kirsten got $20.000 and an order for building the center. The whole area of the Nam June Paik is 5.600 square meters. Three sto-reys are under the ground and two other storeys are above. The most part of the space is intended for exhibiting the great American and Korean artist and other video artist as well.Nam June Paik was born in 1932 in Korea. He stud-ied music in Japan and Germany. When he was 34 he moved to USA. After meeting the musician John Cage and his work Nam June Paik began to experiment with concord of media technolgies and art. Paik became a member of Fluxus and one of the greatest artists of performance. Anyway, as we are talking about the Art-Center dedicated to video art so we should go back to this kind of art. Paik’s works were based on conflict


between high art and everyday life with TV sets as the artist’s main expressive means. Paik was a pio-neer in combination methods of TV broadcasting and video works made by the artist ordered by the complex visual and acoustic matrix. Some Paik’s works were created for a big screen, others require a great number of TV sets forming a kind of matrix latitude. All this was the foundation of the architectural project by Kirsten Schemel. The Art-Center’s com-plexity was mostly dictated by heterogeneity of landscape so that the underground storeys with their curves, slopes and rises and without any flats are hidden under the upper parallelepiped-shaped part of the building. The architect applied to the major aspect of Nam June Paik’s creative work which in her opinion were the continuity of the invention process and search the new posibilietis for development. The above-ground part of the building was interpreted as matrix, or grating. The building’s feature is the only screen-facade consist-

ing of a few layers of printed and well reflecting glass. The extended across facade covered with the thin printed stripes and its almost mirror reflecting surface made the facade resemble a TV screen. The interior of the above-ground part of the build-ing is completely covered with a net of shadows falling through ceiling and walls onto the inner surfaces. The net continuously changing during daylight hours refers to non-static nature of video art and the matrix of TV sets which were often used by Nam June Paik. Visual play of facade bear rather a strong resemblance to the Paik’s work ‘All Star Video’ (1984) and the inner net of shadow with its changing tempo reminds of tempo of music by Ryuichi Sakamoto used in that Paik’s work and by John Cage.Shadows in the natural lit premises and darkness in the underground part of the building are inter-preted as important component of space where video art works would be exhibited.The interiors of the Art Center do not claim to be

self-sufficient. To be the full-fledged they really need media art works. Otherwise the space would seem as it was lifeless.The Nam June Paik Art Center space being not the clear system of premises but being the complex matrix makes the architectural project be not just an exhibition space but also a tool for directors, artists and visitors.It would seem that the first exposition in the new center should concentrate works by Nam June Paik only. Instead the Art Center was open with a much more major event when ‘Now Jump’ festival began on the 8th of October. The festival will last till the 5th of February.It gathered everything connected to the name and creative work by the famous artist and musi-cian: works by those who had an influence on Paik, those who was involved in his works and perfor-mances, and young artists working in media art. The festival Station 1 presented works by members of Fluxus: George Maciunas, Joseph Beuys, Nam

Jun Paik, Charlotte Moorman, George Brecht and composers John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen.Station 2 presented groups of musicians, choreog-rapher and stage directors. The most well-known among them are Romeo Castellucci, Ryoji Ikeda, William Forsythe and ‘Rimini Protokoll’ team. Sta-tion 3 contained works by the young artists. Perhaps the large-scale festival will make the Nam June Paik Art Center the pilgrimage place for the connoisseurs of video art.

Walking along art-Moscow. History of met-ropolitan hot squats.

Hot squat is an illegally occupied lodgment. So squatting is an act of occupancy of abandoned or disengaged place or building without permission by persons (squatters), who are not its owner or tenantry and who hasn’t got other permissions to use it.It would seem impossible in nowadays Moscow with its prices for square metre. But no! Of course, you might know about hot squats locations only from close friends or after its closing. ‘Cause divul-gence of that secret to everyone will lead to im-mediate liquidation of squat. But don’t say there’s no such thing, if you just haven’t heard anything about it. Squats are permanent and springing up as frequently as municipal authorities wind them up.That occurrence formed not today and not even in 90th, as majority thinks. In England they struggled against squats in 14th century already. And in far 1902 sculptor Alfred Bushe founded in Paris the “Hive” – squat on Montparnasse in Danzig blind al-ley. Occurrence like that quieted down after booz-ing atmosphere of modern, but they were revived by hippie in 60th. In Copenhagen hippie-squatters occupied whole block of disengaged caserns, where they founded a colony with its own laws and way of life. Authorities still try to strive against them, but for the time present hippie prevail. In Germany squatting peak happened to Berlin wall collapse. After unification in East Berlin they were many abandoned buildings, and the main thing was to settle down, put up an iron door and hang a lock before police arrives. In 1994 the law, in-terdicting occupying empty houses, was passed, but no one had right to turn out those who had already made themselves at home.We had first and the most striking wave in 80th, then - lesser - in 90th and in 2000 officially there are no any. Some sources contend that there are 150 squats in Moscow - it’s not always art-crowd and prima facie has no difference with usual hobo’s shelter. We’ll try to tell you about ten Mos-

cow squats showed themselves the most vividly.Let’s start our walk from Mayakovski square along Bol’shaya Sadovaya. In building №10 hippies’ commune was situated under pretence of mak-ing the film named “The place on Earth”. Bulgakov lived here - right at that house - and it is possible that surreality of personages lived here in 2006 were not so different from Bulgakov’s “Master and Margaret” characters. We turn to the square, it’s the first turning to the left, coming through arch with name “Teatr Praktika”, yet our aim is not that thatre but small squat theatre in Mamonovsky alley-way - its name is “Dok”. Of course, troupers hasn’t seizured that place but inside it is the real squat - small lodgment in basement looking more like a little flat than a theatre with squattly-dilettante and so cozy setting. And people are so friendly!We say goodbye - although we are invited at the performance, it’s time to set out so invitation was declined but we promised to return.Now we’re on Trehprudniy alley, in 91-93th famous Moscow art-gallery situated here. It was the most merry and dominant ground showing relevant art of the 90th beginnings. Opening days were given every Thursday in the attic, which has individual entry by the yard. Founder of that squat Audei Ter-Ogan’yan lived next porch, occupying two left flats.After evicting of that squat on Trehprudniy alley in summer 1993 the greater part of artists moved to old house on Baumanskaya, where tradition of Thursdays was reanimated under the code name “Gallery “Baumanskaya, 13”.In order to get to the next art-place of our rout on Petrovsky boulevard we should pass rather messy Pushkinskaya square. You can get there straight from Trehprudniy alley or dodge by turning to Bol’shoy Palashevskiy alley, then to Sitinckiy alley and finally pass one more messy place - Strastnoy boulevard.On Petrovskiy boulevard the biggest independent art-union throve once. “The Art Reserve on Petro-vskiy boulevard” occupied a few houses and two courts. Its founder was Alexandr Petlura and its charms were the aged Pani Bronya and Abramych.


They found new life in same time with their houses - there were cinema demonstrations, fashionable performances, discos and shops of vintage clothes. Squat was closed in 1995 after 5 years of being.Next we direct our steps up to Chistie Prudi, but Rojdenstvenskiy and Sretenskey boulevards are not very quiet place for walking, so it’s better to pass them around along left alleys. The first is Pechatnikov alley, once at the intersection of that alley and Trubnaya street was grocery store with a door, that was glued over with very big orange squares. There isn’t that store with art-door nowa-days and on that place huge senseless glassy building stands. After Pechatnikov alley we go to Rybnikov alley and then there is Turgenevskaya square. From here we need to go to Bol’shoy Hariton’evskiy alley that is on the left from Chis-toprudniy boulevard. It will lead us to Chaplygin street, and then the first turn to the left move us out to the Furmanniy alley! Here in abandoned house in 1987 the first lodgings occupied for workshops appeared. Empty flats were full up by more and more new people and were reequipped to workshops. Artists from other towns arrived, knowing that on Furmanniy alley they can find not only roof above head but a lot of like-minded persons. Here paintings that had not even dried out were being sold, easy money flied and here the grain was thrown that afterwards came out in Trehprudniy and on Petrovskiy boulevard. Indeed, to the moment when that squat was scattered the most of artists had already got accommodation in Moscow or went abroad.But Furmanniy alley is not pioneer of soviet Mos-cow squatting. If you return back to Chaplugin then go to Pokrovka and after crossing square of Pokrov gates turn to Hohlovskiy alley, you can find dislocation of earlier squat known as “Kindergar-ten”. It was in 1984 when musicians, artists, poets and other creative personalities as the punish-ment for sponging became street cleaners, lift operators and guards. In that way artists-guards got exhibition fields of empty kindergarten right under enemy’s nose – opposite KGB academy was situated. Artemiy Troickiy, Janna Aguzarova, Sergey

(Bugaev) Africa, Dmitriy Prigov, Il’ya Kabakov, Ger-man Vinogradov – that was the “Kindergarten” for all 80-s avangard. That squat was closed in 1986.We walked round memory places of squats of 80-s and 90-s and now we go to present-day. If you continue the way down along Hohlovckiy, you can’t pass “Typography Original”. Here was the squat that endured last year. It was present-time Moscow squat, the place for crowd of artists, performers, musicians and connoisseur of cinema. Here festival “Everywhere for young” wit support of GCSI firstly was held. A lot of new, different and just good things were here in a year. But that squat that was even illegal not just occupied either ended. The gallery, design-studio and dancing-classes moved, artists left and doors of “Typogra-phy Original” closed. Some says that place won’t lose its vanguard and it will become a musical ground. But place with director isn’t free commune – real art don’t live in such places.Now those who are tired can go along Zabelina and come down to subway station Kitay-Gorod. To steadfast we offer walking to the last still existing and not even hiding its existence Moscow squat. We walk down Solyanka to Yauzskiy boulevard, then cross Bol’shoy Ust’inskiy bridge to oppo-site bank of Moscow-river and then along Sa-dovnicheskiy alley arrive at Pyatnickaya. Here you can find “The Third Way” – the last Moscow squat where life is still boiling. It’s the place where you can see sometimes Janna Aguzarova or organize any exhibition if you at least slightly acquaintance to Raskol’nikov. Squatter spirit reigns here and you won’t find two same noggins.Meanwhile we were preparing that article, walking along Moscow, gathering information and making photos, we realized missed thing of our magazine – of course, squat-redaction is required! Please help us find such place and we can found our little enthusiasts squat.

In 1962 he, who had been in advertising before, created sensational series of works pictured neither men nor landscapes and so on but something unusual – cans of Coca-Cola and preserves including renowned cans of Campbell’s Tomato Soup become his visiting card. Right away the works drew attention of radical art-critics claimed that they ably disclose platitude, futility and faceless of occidental culture of mass consumption. Let’s add to this picture an August drizzle and seldom seeping through the clouds sun beams. It’s curious-ly that one may take a photograph of the monument in all weather and the sky would be dull on it…The monument designed by of Eila Hiltunen was installed in 1967. She won competition for the best monument project announced by Sibelius society. It consists of many organ-pipes welded together in pattern looking like a cloud or metal stripe. The competition aroused great public interest: dispute between abstractionists and figuratists was settled when an effigy of Sibelius was included in the composition. In Yandex dictionaries I typed the word “Photog-raphy”. The explanatory dictionary of the great Russian language of Vladimir Dal suggested me one of the oldest definitions, namely: Photography (Greek) - the art of taking pictures of subjects on a paper with the help of light.Such archaic, beautiful definition impresses. Why not to write about the art which returns the photo-graph its ancient value?The technique of light brush that recently even more often called light graphic –it’s not a new invention and known art refinement among photo fans.Perhaps, the most popular current abroad - graffiti with light or painting with light against the back-ground of urbanistic landscapes. The most remarkable in these magnificently beau-tiful pictures that many of them created without Fotoshop use. It is also a distinctive feature of the photographer Alan Jaras, whose creative nick-name “Reciprocity”. He creates exotic, surrealistic patterns from light, refracted by plastic. The idea founder of urban light painting considered to be Eric Staller who began to experiment in this area already in the 70’s. Obviously, his works represent greatest interest for truly inspired fans, as it’s sourc-es, and sources rather outstanding. Initially Staller was known as a sculptor and has begun his experi-ments with creation of light sculpture. He traced real objects with light and then pictured that, as far as possible in the dark, on a long excerpt from 5 to 30 seconds. Common backgrounds for light graphic are all kinds of dumps with cars and other iron, subways and simply city streets, sea and forest landscapes. Photographer Dean Chamberlain creates real mystery, by picture mysteriously shining halls of temples and palaces. It looks really beautiful and put you under a spell. These pictures look like illus-trations of miracles of photoeditors, but if to look closely, live motion and depth of true art is felt.

Now, here what happens in our country. Russian internet sites full with works of practically only one photoduet working with light brush. The name on hearing-Horyma. The works are contrasting and they are dazzling strongly in the eyes when I view them. Basically these are portraits of a group or a single and also still lives. The first impression of uniniti-ated would be: “It’s not a photograph, it’s photo-shop!” Yes-say the creators -photoshop definitely present. However according to them, sketches for works become usual production photos, which are finalized in graphic photo editors. Well, maybe it’s all true, but unlike foreign light graphic, this art looks very processed. Horyma aren’t recognized nor by photographers neither by artists. The have opened their own school of light graphic. The course is expensive- about 1000$ for six lessons only. However, as I can judge, there are a lot of people interested in it. And there is a lot of enthusiastic reviews in the inter-

net. The authors themselves apply for their own uniqueness and exclusiveness, like many creative personalities. Their art seems to count upon sub-jectivity of perception. Quote from Horyma homepage: “all tones, colors, gender and age defined by the looking person (perhaps depending on his imagination), and have affection only to monitor options (as photo labo-ratories constantly surprise us with what appears on paper at the end). I think that the depth and vitality of the represented character defined not by this gloomy concept, but by stains, flashes of light, and also by the efficacy of stains and light combi-nation.”Pathosly but unclear. I’m quite impressed with the idea. It’s monotony that confuse. Beautifully, in some places even tal-ented, but all Horyma is revised, re-read, digested, and arouse insuperable need for new presenta-tions, new works, new authors. I want to go from private to general rather the reverse, and to watch

current development. Meanwhile it is necessary to copy it’s sources without end. And still whatever one may do, wild-self admira-tion of pioneers is impossible to me. Even if in Russia any experiments in the art field and demon-stration of the result deserve great respect. Never-theless, I, from the height of my youthful maximal-ism, despise the cheap self-public relations, that Horyma makes so actively. However, on the other hand, otherwise you won’t go further. And so- Well done Horyma, at least for me as for consumer, they already passed stage. However, Abramov’s dictionary as synonyms to a word “consumer”, of-fers in particular, definitions: “giver”, “patient”, and also “victim”.

That’s how it happened

That’s how it happened: in May I appeared on the dEUS concert in Moscow and began really smth….! The history of Belgium rock scene (rather poor description of the musical phenomenon I want to tell you about) began in the end of 80-s. And it literally brought me down with the huge amount of new groups and names! This story twisted and turned me back up to 1991! Exactly that time smth born in Belgium Antwerp city that it’s really even hard to call any musical style. It was the whole movement provoked by crazy company of young people who were interested in EVERY-THING including art, animation, producing, music, of course… It was elementary simple: spend time fine and funny – that’s what they really needed. Since then till present times a lot of projects were born in Belgium. But it’s interesting: the same people took part in almost all of them. Rudy Truve, Mauro Pavlovski and Tom Barman – these are the main figures, generators of creative freedom and unbelievable ideas! they produced a lot of groups: dEUS, Evil Superstars, Kiss my jazz, Dead man Ray, Gore Slut. Rudy Truve who finished the art school and then animator suddenly decided the he is interested in music most of all. And he and his friends rented the bordello in the Antwerp suburb. Rather ex-traordinary place with the hooks hanging on the ceiling, huge bathroom and black lamps. They called this place “Heaven hotel”. And inspired by Andy Warhol they decided to make the “art home”. It was planned as a place where the artists could work, experimental movies could be realized and where they could make performances and rep-etitions. But in time all it transformed just to the place, were friends me each other. And, of course, it was very hard to make smth extraordinary and creative there, but in spite of that the brilliant vanguard group KISS MY JAZZ was born exactly in that place. Never-ending flow of different extreme and unexpectable actions and improvisations be-

came the real musical anarchy, consisting of rock, jazz, disco, country and even child songs! But you cant never determine the way they sound. Don’t even bother to search the influence in different musical genres, these guys look down on them. It’s only the threads of their tracks fabric, but jazz in it’s sensitive meaning is the real ruler in creative process. Jazz is the way of life for Rudy. This is his way of creating music and playing with it. You shouldn’t thing too serious about this all, because the main idea of this project is just irony and fun. “Don’t worry, Be happy”… and sing with us if you want, and more silliest you’ll do it, more wonder-ful you’ll act! By the way, about beating in time, all this reminds free-jazz with it’s alienation from classical jazz. Unexpectable rhythm changing can suddenly disappear at all. Unusual sound used in project, ignore of classical timing – all this brings us to experiments. But anyway you can always feel the mood of song, and you really begin to feel music and even start dancing up to rhythm… But watch up! This music cathes you with the immedi-ate change of beating and you are in trap! Don’t forget, that somebody always plays with you!:) The group gathered in 1992 and then it consisted of 15 persons. Till the first album “In doc’s place Fri-day evening” guys played and performed different tracks in different styles and sounds, that showed mood and style of every participant. But they had common passion to Tom Wates, Capitan Beef-heart, Chet Bake, Lois Neefs and Frank Zappa. Their performances were mostly the real theatre with travesty heroes or even simply bald-headed guys, that after took part in dEUS shows!. All it was full of video and alcoholical trash! Of course in time they calmed down and made music the main thing. They had three albums. On the first sight they were similar, but actually the movement to simplier and melodical sound is seen in developing of their cre-ations. Irony even took part on their second album cover where they wrote: “mostly people will hate this!” or “Accords and Lyrics were written down by Rudy and Steff in depression in german hotel


during the tour…” their third album was inspired by the touring from concert to concert… with the silly road small cafes, that had their own crazy life… Anyway this spirited and so excitable group was the jazz project, but with full ignore of public relation to them and public reaction. They never thought about prices of their albums and tours advantage. There were always somebody who came to them and these musicians were some good, some bad. And Rudy told that it wouldn’t be so cool to play without good musician and it wouldn’t be so cool to pank without bad one. And in 1999 they announced the end of the project, because they took everything possible of it and didn’t want to repeat and be repeated in future albums. The participants assigned in another dif-ferent projects. And Kiss My Jazz remained one of the coolest Belgium groups that made the whole experimentally musical show , fusion movement with lo-fi sound and stormed the brain of every person of the crazy parties.. Rudy Truve had a lot of another projects except Kiss My Jazz, Dead Man Ray is the most notable. The group was spontaneous organized after half hour jamm with Daam Stuven. They produce few albums, but mainly they worked for movies mak-ing soundtracks. They produced their album very extraordinary making jam in studio (like in 1940-s jazz) and then put the music on two microphones and then cut tracks to parts and got songs of it. But the group disappeared soon according to familiar reasons and also because of on of the frontmens went to Pavlovski Group, because there he had some frames for music sounds and it was easier then improvise all the time. And Rudy was coming to raw sound from album to album. And it seamed that he wanted to come back to the first idea of simple and free project… One more famous person, Mauro Pavlovski who took part in Kiss My Jazz – free love guitar player – is a rare finding for huge amount of groups. And he changed then again and again flirting with the girls reporters from the scene. Once he recognized

that he listen all the music, from Beatles, Zappa, John Zorn, to top-100 and Mariah Carrie! And be-sides he takook what he liked and put it charmly to his playing. He had his own group Evil Superstars, in which he was ideal producer, vocal signer, guitar player and text author. And all the rest guys from the group were just his fans and they were fond of just playing with him on the scene, cause it was the coolest thing in the world! They produced very vanguard music, but with some attractive melodi-cal sound that made this music more popular to public in good meaning of these words. And in spite of genius playing soon this group was came apart because of simple and prosaic reason- some problems with sound company… After some successful and unsuccessful groups, Mauro finally apperared in dEUS. But he took part in this project in 2006, and the group was born in 1991. This time young Tom Barman was a movie fan. He recently made all the clips for the group by himself… During eternal Belgium bohemia par-ties, inspired of Pixies, Velvet Underground, Violent Femmes, Leonard Cohen, gathered the company for playing cavers on their favorite songs. Every-thing was successful and gathered enough mate-rial for the first album up to 1992. The album name was Worst Case Scenario. Rudy Truve took part in two first albums and influenced vocal and sound of Barman and group mood. It was crazy fusion of rock, grange, jazz, pop. And it had it’s own fans already! Later Barman flirted with the reporters, that they didn’t even wanted to play such van-guard music. But very artistic songs with changing of rhythms and crazy Tom’s vocal are the better an-swer to him! Their music was very cinematic, they gathered a lot of fans all over the world, and they even were going to make USA tour, but suddenly something went wrong, thy got tired of tours and hard work and decided to take part in another projects. Their third album was like a mirror of the worst period in Barman’s life, but lots consider it to be the better album during all history of the group, it was more complicated than the earliest

and was like a trip to different moods. Later, when Barman was having a long rest period he turned back to his old idea to make a movie “Any Way The Wind Blows” and he also produced a new dance project Magnus. In 2006 dEUS gathered together with new participants and produced a new al-bum “Pocket Revolution”. But the critics told it was rather poor, because they didn’t feel any revolution in it… But they were wrong, because this album sounded quite differently than earlier, because the group became older and began to make more complicated music. Their last album “Vintage Point” proved it quite well. All the songs are perfectly completed and very harmonic. So it seamed, they were always in our minds and only now somebody performed them. Actually, dEUS is a real fusion sound great group that combined different styles all together and performed the new style of music harmony in modern art audio world. No one song repeats another. All are different and unforgettable. It’s like movies with different stories and heroes.

Since I heard of them I immediately became their fan and now I listen to different songs every day. And every time I listen to them I find smth interest-ing and open smth new and exciting. This group became one of my passion objects for a long time and I like it, because I need such exciting experi-ence in my inner life.I don’t know if you find smth common with art, but anyway, I think this story is certainly connected to art because of freedom and artistic passion and dreams about fun and free interpretations that make not music, but visual sounds! It is more im-portant to find everyday smth new in our lives!

Some Special

We decided to combine these three absolutely different creative organisms concerted with differ-ent style and ideas in one article just because we suppose that music of each of them is honored to be presented just as in music stores so in modern art museums, too. The most arty-crafty musicians of the last years are in our review.Nico Muhly is the extraordinary creation. The in-credible young author who looks like a typical col-lege student that is able to create amazing charm-ing sophisticated music. The music which can be defined as the neo-classic one with huge stylistic amplitude. This young admirer of Stravinsky lives in New York city’s Chinatown and is characterized by the local press as rookie of the depreciated Phil-lip Glassa. Nico keeps company with lots of city music jokers as Anthony Hegarti from Antоny and the Johnsons who sometimes works on records for Muhly and co-operates with such big artists as Bjork. He keeps on composing and composing… His second CD «Mothertongue» that has been recently released is the heap of crystal orchestrat-ings, cosmogenic trips and polyphonic sounds of ancient musical instrument. Perhaps this is not a perfect music but maybe Jason Stetem is cyborg sent from above. The person with adequate con-science should not dare to deny these facts.Cocorosie forces us to thank God for creating such things as Celtic harps, microsynthesizers and aunty Tina. Harps and microsynthesizers help these freak sisters to bring into being their openwork music and aunty Tina actually is the reason they came into this world and were given the names they have(Сoco and Rosie is so they were called by mommy Tina Hunter when they were child). This fancy duet from Brooklyn could transform a sound of a creaking door of kitchen furniture and nervous sound of harp strings into the most entertain-ing vocal and accompaniment of the American indie scene. Their first album amazed with the schizophrenic beauty and extravagant manner to

compose songs of scraps of emotions, sounds and thoughts. Deliberate minimalism and even primi-tivism, perhaps, are their strong points (in literal sense – there were three copulating horses on the cover of the second album). Their last album The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn consists of more noticeable sound, there are many electronic arrangements which were produced by Valgir Sigursson, the producer of several albums of Bjork, but it’s still sweet for infantile aura which Cocorosie performs. Art hip-hop trio Sa-Ra are rap veterans beyond the ocean. One of them, Taz, worked with Dr Dre at the beginning of G-Funk Guru career while writing his great album The Chronic. Another one, Shafiq, produced lots of tracks for his music colleagues, Duran Duran, for example. The third member named OmMas helped 50 cent, Lauryn Hill, Foxy Brown and many others to start their careers. Being tired to serve the main black music stars the trio had banded to record some tracks for themselves for pleasure. The result of small studio session gave occasion to the war between records labels for the right to have their album in the catalogue. Sa-Ra creates the hissing jelly hip-hop that wraps your-self with its zephyrous harmonies and tidy recita-tives. Their tracks remind the taste of good wine after winter walk – the feeling of the warm and comfort atmosphere is their strongest point. And by the way Kanye West the rapper with most cour-teous music taste had signed them to his label.

The art of wardrobe minimalism.

In times of global economical crisis, when comes to personal image, the female part of the planet Earth’s population tends to deal with the problems in one of two extreme ways: completely denying themselves everything, thinking “there are bigger problems right now than what I look like” or fully loosing themselves in shopping, while following the motto “maybe I won’t die tomorrow, but I’ll sure shop till I drop today!”. Neither of these ways is going to solve the crisis, as a matter of fact it will only make your wallet feel lighter, but it will defi-nitely make you forget about the stacked up bills on the kitchen table for a moment. I think a few seasons later, we have all reconsidered purchasing a few things and wondered what made us do that. Since I have become free of the American corpo-rate world six months ago, I have suddenly realized that I have not used a major part of my clothes, now that I don’t have to go to the office every day. Furthermore, a major part of those clothes was unused with tags still attached and some of these clothes were dating back to the days when I was carefully building up outfits every morning before work. And even though I haven’t added more than two pieces to my ever-growing collection in the past few months, this was a sudden revela-tion to me, I have never considered myself to be a soother-shopper. I have never bought things to make myself feel better in bad times and I have never been a shopping addict, however being a fashion designer, I tend to see certain clothes as pieces of art which leads to designer pieces from Marni, Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga collect-ing dust in my closet for years. During my time in the industry I have managed to collect an archive worth of history over the past 10 years: the his-tory of my personal taste’s development as well as history of fashion. Besides ultra low rise jeans by Diesel there hang Sex and the City inspired skirts by Comme Des Garcons, neighboring the corset jacket from McQueen that I was salivating over

for six month before purchasing it are silk dresses by Philosophy by Alberta Ferretti and menswear inspired trousers from Stella McCartney. One can say that my wardrobe proudly displayed all signs of schizophrenia. Besides realizing that I have way too many unworn clothes, I also realized that I ur-gently need to cleanse my closet from things that have no designer or vintage value.Comfortably seated on the floor of once was a guest bedroom and has recently become my walk in closet, I was going thought my clothes that had tags on or that have not been worn in the past years. The cleaning out was going on under one strict rule: if I don’t’ remember I had this or if I have not worn it in the past years- it’s out! And even thought the thought of regretting purchasing something never entered my mind, I couldn’t help but wonder why some things ended up being purchased at all. In times when people are fearfully watching the market’s every move, when people are losing jobs by the thousands, when stock prices melt like ice in the sun, I think we need to reconsider our priorities and clearly look reality in the eye, realize where our priorities lie. It is possible that we are facing a global minimalism movement, minimalism when it comes to our lifestyles as well as minimalism in art and fashion and it is possible that major changes could start in our own closets, because this is where our major issues sometimes hide.When I was done going through my closet I real-ized that the volume of clothes hasn’t changed to much but even then the pile next to me re-sembled a small colorful mountain, which imme-diately in my eyes transformed into dollar amounts and made me shiver. Do I really need these three beige skirts when one of them is from YSL and the other two are from Zara and Banana Republic? It seems the answer is so obvious, but I didn’t realize I had three beige skirts. The colorful pile of clothes was immediately sorted into three categories: 1. to sell on eBay or in a consignment shop, 2. to give away to girlfriends and 3. to donate. However,


when my girlfriends find out I was going to auc-tion of my designer clothes online, they came up with a curious initiative: why sell to someone on the internet, when you can find fine loving homes for the carefully collected clothes among your girlfriends? So, we had a sample sale at my house! It was slightly painful partying with my bright and colorful Marni jacket, my romantic dresses from Alberta Ferretti and wool sweaters I picked up in Hong Kong, but holding on to them for no reason wasn’t reasonable. Also I had to part with some evening wear from Ralph Lauren Collection- in reality I don’t think I will be getting an invitation to the Oscars any time soon and Angelina’s Birthday invitation had clearly been lost in the mail. How-ever the small army of my girlfriends left at 5 am in the morning with some great purchases that didnt’ brake the bank. The rest of the clothes was sold off on eBay and in a local consignment shop and with the proceeds I not only paid the rent for the next few months but I also purchased my husband a new sports bike that he wanted. At the end of the day my closet ended up a better investment than stock!The rest of the stuff was gently packed away to be sent overseas to a few friends in need.My remaining clothes were carefully sorted by season, color and occasion. The most important rule in fixing a closet is organization and clarity- when you don’t know what you have the chances of purchasing similar things grow immensely. My evening gowns were stored out of the way and my cocktail dresses got a separate space, my favorite tops were gathered close at hand and jackets were sorted by color and placed together, sweaters were sorted by occasion: turtlenecks, crewnecks and v-necks, cashmeres and casual, and were stored away in cedar lined drawers. My silk long sleeve tops and shirts were displayed close to reach because they are what I wear most. Pants and skirts were also separated by color and oc-casion. At the end of the process I realized that regardless of so many items in my closet I was


missing a few basics: a pair of everyday boots that didn’t have a 4” heel, a pair of gold flats and a wide black belt. Who would have thought that I could have gaps in my wide collection?During difficult times us, women, tend to make ourselves happy by buying makeup and clothes that give us immediate fix, but that we forget about as soon as they are stored away in draw-ers at home. After cleaning out my closet I follow a few simple rules that really help me control my urges:1. Do not make spontaneous purchases.Regardless if the item is on sale or not it can always be put on hold. When you give yourself a few days to consider a purchase you might either find it a great place in your closet or realize you really don’t need it. 2. Don’t buy it if it does not fit with anything you already own. If this great Marni jacket looks mesmerizing on the mannequin or on a celebrity in a magazine, it does

not mean it will do you any justice. Know your style and be faithful to it. 3. One in- one out! If you’re purchasing one, get rid of one. 4. Don’t even buy anything that does not fit you perfectly. We often purchase clothes on sale or just because we like the way they look, in hopes of tailoring them or losing weight. Don’t ever fall a victim of a good store lighting or a sales person’s compli-ments- if the item doesn’t fit you don’t need it!Ever since my closet shrank about 30% I feel more minimalistic than ever, even though I’m still a far reach from a true minimalistic wardrobe. Seeing the amount of clothes I managed to clean out and the large sum they ended up bringing in, I realized my own reality. One can’t argue that every woman needs a good base wardrobe that reflects every aspect of her life and her personality, but only after carefully looking into every dark corner of one’s closet can one truly realize how wrongfully do we

often built that base. Every wardrobe should have a few basic things: a stylish pencil skirt, a pair of well cut black tailored trousers, a few cashmere sweaters, a sharp suit, a little black dress, a pair of great boots and everyday flats in neutral colors, one special occasion dress, one cocktail dress and a few great well cut blouses. When come to think about it, this is quite doable for every woman, because a good wardrobe is not built in a day, but with a base like that one can built up endlessly with more price friendly options. I constantly get complimented on one of my favorite tops that happen too be from H&M, however no one has yet guessed that it’s from the price point Swedish retailer, because I never pair it with inexpensive garments and accessories. A truly great base will allow you to build up without spending too much money, you can buy price point items and shop on sale racks- the most important thing to remember is that you need them and that you’re not buying them because they are inexpensive. At the end of the day, a great classic base garment of great quality will bring a return better than some stock recently has.

Art-November

This time we present to your attention art-dates. Some of them are relevant to modern art, some are relevant to classic art and other are just attendant. But all of them are interest-ing at least we would be happy if you found it interesting to read. Bon appétit!

1st November 1512 - firstly ceiling of Sistine Chapel – Capel-la Sistina by Michelangelo – was presented to Rome. Sistine Chapel is a former Capella Magna, in Vatican. It was built in 1473-1481 by architect Giovanni dei Dolci on demand of Pope Sixtus IV, who also gave the name. Nowadays Chapel is museum, remarkable Renaissance memorial.

3rd November 1888 – day when symphonic suite “Shaher-ezada” by Rimsky-Korsakov was firstly performed in Saint Petersburg.

4th November 1946 – In Paris UNESCO formed – United Na-tions Educational Scientific and cultural organization.

5th November 1878 – Kuz’ma Sergeevich Petrov-Vodkin – Russian and soviet painter-symbolist, graphic artist, art theorist, writer and teacher - was born. He had been Hon-ored art-worker RSFSR since 1930. The most famous painting “Bathing of Red Horse” made in 1912 became the turning-point for painter and brought him world-fame.

6th November 2006 – in the London’s Underground Knightsbridge exhibition “Art Below” opened its doors. There were present reproductions of 24 paintings be 24 young art-ists using different styles and techniques. Exhibition’s motto –”Turning Ad Space into Art Space”, works were placed into plastic boxes meant for advertisement. Two our compatriots were among authors – Olga Lavrenkova and Nicolai Ishuk. Four weeks photos, paintings and drawings adorned the station.

7th November 2006 – in Moscow gallery “S’Art” opening of exhibition “There was no sex in USSR” took place.

9th November 1911 – Parisian George Claude patents neon advertisement.

12th November 1859 – in Paris circus artiste Jules Leotard for the first time gives performance on aerial trapeze.

13th November 1986 – “Yellow submarine” – cartoon devoted to The Beatles - was presented. It’s famous work of director-animator George Dunning.

14th November 1925 – The surrealists’ exhibition opened in Paris. It included paintings of Max Ernst, Man Ray, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso.

16th November 1913 - the first tome of “Searching the lost time” – classical autobiographical novel by Marseille Proust - was published in Paris.

17th November 1904 – Birthday of Isamu Noguchi – Ameri-can sculptor and landscape architect of Japanese descent. Noguchi successfully mixed American modernism with traditional Japanese applied art. Whatever he does – interior and landscape architecture, décor or sculpture – he saw himself as connecting-link between artistic traditions of the West and the East. He was friend of Diego Rivera and Frieda Kahlo. Once jealous Diego caught his wife in company with Noguchi and almost killed him but everything turned out alright. In 1958 Isamu Noguchi made the garden for UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

18th November 1787 – French artist and inventor, par-ticularly of daguerreotype process of photography, Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre was born. He was also well-known as dancer, rope-walker and designer for theatre. He worked wonders on stage, for example, together with his companion built the diorama: sitting audience could see a huge cathe-dral from outside and then suddenly find themselves inside. Two paintings were made for that, which height was up to 22 meters. The diorama had a great success in Paris and make Daguerre famous. In the end of 20th together with Joseph Niépce he worked at creating new method of photography. In 1833 Niépce died. Daguerreotype was invented some time after that suddenly as effect of usual experiment.

21st November 1990 – on Indonesian island Bali Mick Jagger married American model Jehrri Holl, who was his girlfriend for more than ten years.

23rd November 1928 – in Moscow the Culture House of Railwaymen opened. According to Ilf and Petrov it was built thanks to jewelry of Ippolit Matveevich Vorob’yaninov’s mother-in-law. The jewelry were hidden in 12th chair from Mr.Gambs’s suite of furniture.

24th November 1954 - Serbian film director Emir Kusturica was born. He is winner of many main European movie awards, including two “Palme D’Or”, award of International Cannes Festival and French Order of Literature and Art.

28th November 1974 – date of the last John Lennon per-formance on the scene during Elton John’s concert in the “Madison square garden”.


30th November 1946 – Yugoslavian artist Marina Abramovic was born. She reputed one of the most active and scandal-ous figures in European art space. From the very begin of her career in Belgrade in 70-s Marina Abramovic was pioneer of performance. On one of her first exhibitions in 1974 she laid in center of burning pentagonal star and wrapped live python around her head.Her fame was brought by installation “Relations in space” in 1976. Naked artist and her lover German artist Ulay (Uwe Lay-siepen) touched, rubbed and tortured each other in furious rhythm and finally broke having hurt each other. Ulay was here coauthor and lover for 12 years. They met in 1975 – it is astonishing that they have the same date of birthComposition “Communistic body, Capitalistic body” (1980-s) became a protest against dividing people by ideological barriers. In 1997 Marina Abramovic got prestige Golden lion award on XLVII Venice Biennale for performance “Balkan Baroque”. Clothed in white dress she sat among blood-stained bones rubbing them right in front of shocked audience. Marina’s installations sometimes cause shock. In 1988 one of audience fainted right on the installation.
