The devotionals listed below were ordered because we thought they looked promising for preteens to read and enjoy. Of course, the real test is what kids actually think! We asked a couple of dozen kids to spend a week with a devotional and then write us a review. The kids were asked to respond to these questions: What did you like about it? What – if anything – did you dislike about it? Did reading this make you feel closer to God? Did you learn anything, or was it mostly things you already knew? They were also asked to rate the reading difficulty of the book – too young, too old, or about right. Reviews

Self-contained, so not necessary to look up the passage in the Bible. Usually just the key verse or verses are highlighted & expounded upon. Verses highlighted are drawn from all over the Bible; not presented in sequence. Our reviewers said: I like how it gives you a verse then backs it up. It showed me how character traits are related to in the Bible.

It was interesting, but it was also very informative. But, it was very short and too much was happening in three short paragraphs. As for making the reader feel closer to God, It told you a lot of things, but had more life references than passages about God. I learned a lot but I knew a lot of it. Indicated “It was too easy – maybe better for kids who are younger.” Liked: How it is funny at the beginning of a devotion. It’s already stuff I knew but if I got deeper into the devotional, yes (it would make him feel closer to God).

Verses chosen illustrate basic doctrinal truths, which are then expounded upon. Our reviewers said: One reviewer said the reading level was just about right for kids this age, but he found it contained mostly things he already knew and as a result, and it didn’t make him feel closer to God. Another reviewer disagreed, writing, I could understand what it was talking about and I learned a little bit and that the devotional did draw him closer to God.

365 DAYS TO KNOW GOD FOR GIRLS Price: $10 CBD Product Description: 365 faith-filled devotions especially written for girls by popular author Carolyn Larsen.   Our take: Very simple: one verse and a straightforward devotional thought on that. And for that reason, it might take a more mature kid to be able to keep up with it and remain interested. There is no storyline, no real specific applications. The counsel is solid, but will it really grab a

kid's attention? Our reviewers said: It tells you things you did not know about God. (It made me feel closer to God) because it makes me believe in him. Another reviewer disliked this one, however: I didn’t learn anything because you would get bored so you wouldn’t want to read it, suggesting that it would be better for kids who are a little older.

365 DAYS TO KNOW GOD FOR GUYS Price: $10 CBD Product Description: 365 faith-filled devotions especially written for guys by popular author Carolyn Larsen. Our take:  Same format as 365 Days to Knowing God for Girls. See above. Our reviewer said: I like the poems (devotional thoughts at the head of each chapter) for every month. I also like

how she broke it down into four parts: the topic, the verse, a paragraph that helps you understand the topic, and the challenge point. It gave me some good traits (and therefore made him feel closer to God). I learned a little.

Our take:  Practical advice on daily situations. This one seems more geared to imparting wisdom than elaborating on spiritual principles, unlike its cousin below. Our reviewer said: It taught me a lot about God. I thought everything was great. (It made me feel closer to God) because I talked more to him than usual.

Most elaborate on a spiritual concept or truth, explaining the application; but some work the other way, teaching them how to reach goals or deal with anger. Helps girls wrestle & work through problem issues. Our reviewer said: It had to deal with stuff that would happen in real life. I learned a lot.

Our take:  Walks kids through the NT and the content of each book. Our reviewers said: I loved everything! Especially how as it went through the Bible it taught character traits. (It helped me feel closer to God because) it helped me understand the Bible. Another wrote: I liked that it took verses from the Bible and used them but The devotions were too long. I learned more about the Bible. While agreeing that it did make him feel closer to God, he also indicated “It would be better for kids who are a little older”.

Each book starts with an overview and the individual readings give analysis. Of course, this is not everything in the Old Testament, but the ground covered here is impressive. The readings are not assigned to dates. Each 3-4 page reading has four sections: foundation, focus, footwork, fruit. Our reviewers said: (Liked) It was like reading out of the Bible. (Disliked) It was a long devotion. Had mostly things I already knew. Reviewer thought “It would be better for kids who are a little older.” I loved everything!! I liked the timeline tidbits, the focus boxes, and the fruit boxes. (Helped me feel closer to God because) it helped me understand portions of the Bible more. I learned quite a bit and it helped me remember many things also. (Liked) I liked that it told the Old Testament bible stories with more depth. She felt closer to God because I was reading the history of God and man and some of the stuff I didn’t know. (Disliked) That the devotions sometimes got long and that I already knew some of the stuff.

GOD AND ME! AGES 10-12 Price: $11 CBD Product Description: If you are like most girls, there is stuff in your life that you need God to help you with. This book offers over 100 devotions and activities that talk about the things you deal with every day at school and at home. Appropriate for ages 10 through 12.

Our take: Each devo has a short narrative followed by three response questions, and then a prayer. The facing page has some sort of puzzle. Kids who are diligent will answer the questions, and kids who enjoy puzzles will do the puzzles; and those who aren’t, or don’t – well… But the range of subjects covered is good and this is more activity-based, so girls will feel like they get to “do” something other than just sit and read. Our reviewer said: I really liked how it gave great details. Another reviewer liked that it was interactive.

GOD'S LITTLE DEVOTIONAL BOOK FOR BOYS Price: $12 CBD Product Description: It only takes a few minutes every day to discover the God who loves you. He knows you and wants the very best for you. Our take: Bits of wisdom each day. Lots of "principles". All narrative-based. The short story is then followed by a “Remember” (a Bible verse), a reiteration of the main point, and "You Can Do It!" which is practical application. Non-date specific. Good character building manual, but no larger context of "God's big story". More of a "what-to-do" book. Subject index in the back. Our reviewer said: I like how it related to things in life. I also like the Remember and You Can Do It! parts. It helped me understand some character traits. I learned a little.

GOTTA HAVE GOD: COOL DEVOTIONS FOR GUYS AGES 10-12 Price: $12 CBD Product Description: Jesus knows all about being a guy because He was one. And if you are like most guys, there is stuff in your life that needs God's help. That's what's really cool about this book. As you read each devotion, you will find out more about God and how to be a Christian. After you read, there is a fun activity to help you understand the Bible. There are over 100

Our take: Similar to Gotta Have God 2 (see above), but I liked the categories these were divided into better: about me, my major problems, the best I can be, my journey with God, etc. Readings are not assigned to specific dates. Our reviewer said: I liked the stories at the top of the page. But, once you play a game you can’t play it again unless you write it on a separate piece of paper. I think it made me closer to my family than to God. It was mostly things I already knew but there was a couple things I learned.

GOTTA HAVE GOD 2: FUN DEVOTIONS FOR BOYS AGES 10-12 Price: $11 CBD Product Description: You loved our best-selling Gotta Have God devotional series just for guys. Our take: A series of "simple truths". A main idea at the top of each page. Placed in categories, but what's the big context? The dialogue is a little contrived, but is used to drive the teaching forward. The "Your Turn" question seems really simple. Kids likely won't give that much thought. Has "puzzles" on opposite pages - almost like Sunday school handouts. Readings are not assigned to specific dates. No kid reviews.

MY TIME WITH GOD: 150 WAYS TO START YOUR OWN QUIET TIME Price: $7 CBD Product Description: Getting to know God in a personal way can be fun and definitely not boring! My Time With God helps kids create their own devotional time. Filled with fascinating facts trivia, this is a great way to build a strong foundation of faith in young lives in ways that hold their interest day after day.

Our take: This is an introductory book on why & how to have a quiet time. For that reason, it may feel “like school” and that will be counterproductive for some kids. Definitely a “Bible study” approach – kids will not be able to

work their way through this one meaningfully without looking up the passages mentioned. So, this book also requires a kid who can divide their attention between two texts at the same time. Goes “through the Bible”, but some treatment is necessarily very light. Each devotion has reflection questions, but that’s another reason this book requires a disciplined reader to be effective. Our reviewers said: It helps you get relaxed. (It made me feel closer to God because) it made you realize things about him. But, our reviewer indicated this devotional was on the easy side for him, and maybe better for younger kids. I liked that it didn’t have stuff that was boring. Dislike: that it had sooo many verses on one page. Yes it did (make the reviewer feel closer to God) because it had a prayer time thing.

Is it too young? A patchwork of passages & verses, but no context: what is the larger narrative? Some application is written in adult-speak – spiritualized; would a kid know how to apply this stuff? (94) Has a topic index in the back. Our reviewer said: It made you think about God – but, this reviewer also said it mostly contained things I already knew.        

THE ONE YEAR BOOK OF DEVOTIONS FOR KIDS #1 Price: $11 CBD Product Description:  Daily devotional time is important for children as well as for adults. And The One Year Book of Devotions for Kids can be a valuable tool in developing your child's own personal devotions. In addition to the 365 readings, The One Year Book of Devotions for Kids includes a topical index so kids can look up stories and apply them to specific situations in their life. With devotions for kids to

read alone or together as a family, this devotional will give kids what they need in order to spend quality, daily time with God. Our take: An entire year of readings, each assigned to a date. All narrative-based – starts with a fictional story about a boy or boys, then "How about you?", then the final main idea "Bottom Line" in bold at bottom. Topics include spiritual principles as well as Christian living. What they call “character building” is more like the development of spiritual traits or disciplines – and this is good, because it grounds the development of character in God, not in the self. Topical index in the back. Our reviewers said: It put Bible stories into normal life. Still, I only learned a little, so it kind of made our reviewer feel closer to God. I all had to do with everyday life so ever yday we learn something. Still, the devotional contained things I already knew so for that reason, this reviewer said it didn’t make her feel closer to God.

Our take: The “One Year” series follows a common format, so see above comments on “The One Year Book of Devotions for Kids #1”. Our reviewer said: Liked: That it included Bible reading, that it had a lesson for each day of the year, that the stories were interesting. Disliked: The questions were too easy, and its memorize section – the Bible verses

were an odd translation. (It didn’t make me feel closer to God) because it didn’t make me think. It was touching up on the things I already knew. Overall: The stories/topics were good for my age, but the questions weren’t.

Our reviewer said: They are doable devotions that are something to think about throughout the day. It feels like God is right there with you and like a good friend. I learned new things that can help me.

THE ONE YEAR EVERY DAY DEVOTIONS Price: $11 CBD Product Description: Encourage your pre-teen child to build an active faith based on biblical principles with this 365-day guide to Christian living. Filled with short readings, NLT Scriptures, fun facts, creative applications, and prayer suggestions, this devotional is a great way for tweens to learn who God is and why He cares about everything they do everyday! Previously published as Young Believer 365.

Our take: Practical Christian living for kids. Every day has an "I believe" statement at the bottom, all of which are theological truths, and all of which are indexed in the back. This devotional seems to really "know" the pre-teen everyday world and is able to relate sometimes lofty concepts to life, prompting kids to choose or think through what the application looks like for them as individuals. Our reviewers said: This is a very good book. It tells you things you already have heard, but in a different way. I really enjoyed reading this, and it definitely brought me closer to God. I would definitely recommend this book to other kids. I like that it has verses in it. I didn’t like that you couldn’t find anything out. It didn’t make her feel closer to God because it was too basic. It was mostly things I already knew.

STICKY SITUATIONS: 365 DEVOTIONS FOR KIDS & FAMILIES Price: $12 CBD Product Description: Our responses to "sticky situations" can get us into trouble or glorify God. What should I do when my best friend cheats on a test? How about when Sarah asks me to lie to her parents? Together, parents and kids can discuss a year's worth of realistic Sticky Situations! Our take: Can be a great tool for promoting discussions

and walking with kids through problem-solving situations before they actually face them in life. Gives you 365 situations for families (at least two – it really isn’t useful for a kid to read on their own) to discuss, “What would you do?” After putting out the hypothetical situation, has a Bible verse or two for you to mull over as you come to a decision (you are given four or five choices). Then there’s an "Answer Key" in the back with some additional discussion questions. Love the concept. Downside: some of the answers are pretty obvious, and the fact that you “turn to the back and find the right answer” can cause kids to guess in order to be right (not the idea) rather than talk through how they’re making the decision and weighing options. Also, frankly, some of these situations have good answers and better answers, but the back of the book always reduces it to one right answer. The other concern is the way this devotional sometimes uses Scripture. Isaiah 30:15, for instance, is decidedly not about boasting and cockiness in sports. The Bible does not address the question of what to do when one of our friends gets rejected by the rest of the group. What the Bible does do is tell us what God values and how we ought to regard others, so that we can make a good decision in a situation like that. So, the suggested verses aren’t always the best ones for the given situation and won’t necessarily clarify the decision for kids, which is unfortunate. Our reviewers said: Liked that you could read it every day. “Maybe” made one reviewer feel closer to God. Another wrote: It was more of a family devotion. I learned something each time. (It made me feel closer to God because) it was a different lesson each time. A third wrote: I liked that it asked you what the character should do, although it was mostly stuff I already knew.
